Among this group is a pleading "For Maevia, Accused of Witchcraft" and "For Titius, Accused Before the Secret Council for Beating His Wife." Mackenzie was Lord Advocate during the reigns of Charles II and James II. Best known for his role in the persecution of Scottish Presbyterians, which earned him the nickname "Bloody MacKenzie," he was an important jurist, scholar and author, and the founder of the Advocates Library, which is now part of the National Library of Scotland. Four early 18th century medical works bound in one volume, the most important of which is the 2nd edition of Exercitationum anatomico-chirurgicarum by the celebrated Dutch anatomist and surgeon Govard Bidloo. Expanded from the first edition, this work is illustrated with sixteen handsome copper-engraved plates. The first edition of 1704 was illustrated with only seven. Exercitationum is a "collection of ten anatomical and surgical essays by the celebrated Leyden anatomist. In the two essays on the nerves Bidloo maintains that the nerves do not contain fluid but are rather a mass of fibers. In the seventh essay, De oculo purulento (p. 73-82), the treatment for hypopyon is described" (Bernard Becker Collection in Ophthalmology, 49). CONDITION & DETAILS: Leiden: Jordanum Luchtmans 4to. 7.75 by 6 inches. Ex-libris from the Bellingham Medical Institute, but bearing only the very light ghosting of 2 numbers on the spine. Bidloo: 3 parts in 1: [viii], 128, [4], [129]-216 pp, sixteen engraved plates; [47] pages. Muys: 100, [4] pages. Folding table. Gorter: [16], 246, [plate], 1 pages. ILLUSTRATION: The Bidloo is illustrated with sixteen copper-engraved plates, overall in very good condition. All of the plates show a very faded library stamp, but on most of the plates it is barely noticeable. See scanned images. The Gorter is illustrated with one copper-engraved plate and also has a very faded library stamp on the plate. BINDING: Early burgundy 20th century library cloth (see ex-libris note above). Front board is detached. Text block is sturdy. INTERIOR: All 4 works are complete. Title page of Gorter is lightly soiled at margins. Overall, the text of all three works is clean and in very good condition.

Partie Septentrionale De La Souabe. Par G. Del'isle De L'academie Royale Des Sciences

Paris: Guillaume Delisle, Quai de L Horloge, 1704. Map. Very Good. Paris: Guillaume Delisle, Quai de L Horloge. 1704. 48 x 65 cm. Black and white copper plate engraved map with hand coloring notating borders and urban areas. This chart, retrieved from Guillaume Delisles World Atlas, one of his two most noted works, depicts Souabe Septentrionale, or Northern "Swabia," one of the four original provinces of Germany, covering the territory which later split into the French province of Alsace, the German principalities of Baden and Württemberg, and most of northern Switzerland. Title is top center, bordered by scales. All relevant cities, villages and landmarks are noted and labeled. Sheet is sturdy and unmarked. Text is clear and legible. Bright, crisp lines. Vertical crease down center of chart from atlas extraction.DeLisle is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. Lloyd Brown states that DeLisle "undertook a complete reform of a system of geography that had been in force since the second century, and by the time he was twenty five he had very nearly accomplished his purpose." This chart provides an excellent example of his early work. Overall, a superior copy of this original map in exceptional condition. Please feel free to view our photographs of this rare piece.

La Mer Mediterranee Divisee En Mer De Levant Et De Poinantg Subdivisees En Leur Princpales Parties Our Mare

Paris, 1704. Map. Very Good. Paris, 1692. 86.4 x 55.9 cm. Framed. Hand-colored copper-plate engraved chart of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding regions. Title across top outside of frame. Detailed cartouche in lower left corner containing publishing information. Scale in upper left corner. Political boundaries have been hand-colored. Clean, unmarked sheet with minimal toning. Vertical crease down center of map from atlas extraction. Colors remain clear and bright. Lines are crisp and sharp.Alexis Hubert Jaillot followed his predecessor Nicholas Sanson in ushering in the great age of French Cartography in the late 17 and 18th centry. Following the disastrous fire that destroyed the studio of Johannes and Cornelius Blaeu, the publishing center of the cartographic world gradually transitioned from Amsterdam to Paris. Though trained as a sculptor, a lucrative marriage led Jaillot to inherit a large map and print publishing firm. Upon Sansons death, Jaillot negotiated with his heirs for the rights to republish many of his works. Access to Sansons plates allowed Jaillot to be prolific, requiring only minimal modifications to the initial works. As a traditional artist, Jaillots maps were widely admired for their elaborate and meaningful title cartouches. The following map is a third printing, the first being published in 1692, then in 1693. The atlas is unknown. The classical influence can be noted in the ornately decorated cartouche in the bottom of the frame. Please feel free to view our photographs of this piece.

Opusculum non minus curiosum, quàm fructuosum, argumentis tam sacris, quàm profanis, & à naturE lumine petitis stabilitum. In gratiam Erroneorum spirituum : quorum Principium, Oblivio Dei: Medium vita scelerata: Finis Gehenna

Vienna: K¸rner, 1704. (EMBLEM BOOK) Second (?) edition (first published in Vienna, 1676). 12mo. Frontispiece and 7 engraved emblematic plates by Franz-Ambros (or Christoph) Dietel. [20], 240 pp. Text in Latin. Contemporary sheep, worn, small vertical tear at top of spine, but binding sound, first plate with small chip at outer edge (not affecting image), three small wormholes through first two leaves (reduced to one small hole through the next few), generally quite clean and crisp internally, with only occasional minor spotting. OCLC (no copies of the 1704 edition) . An extremely rare and curious emblem book, with the text in the form of seven dialogues between Vir Politicus and Theologicus by the Hungarian Jesuit theologian Johann Raicsani (or Janos Rajcsanyi). The dialogues concern (1) The Existence of God; (2) Divine Providence; (3) Fate; (4) Predestination and Divine Prescience; (5) Immortality of the Soul; (6) On Gehenna; and (7) Resurrection of the Dead. Along with a frontispiece, each dialogue is preceded by an emblematic engraving by the Viennese artist/engraver Franz-Ambros Dietel (d. 1737?). They are extraordinary, and frequently visionary, pictorial representations of the substance of each of the dialogues. The frontispiece is signed "A. Dietel fecit" and others simply "D." Dietel and his brother Christoph, sons of Stephan Dietel, were engravers residing in Vienna during the early 18th-century. The plates depart from the usual format of the emblem book in that there is no motto; but the symbolic content of the images, each with an accompanying verse from the Vulgate, places it squarely in the tradition. Evidently Raicsani's text was first published in Vienna in 1676; this appears to be the second Vienna edition (possibly preceded by a 1700 edition printed in Passau - the date is uncertain); and reprints appear as late as 1757. It is not at all clear whether the Dietel plates appeared in the 1686 edition. As Franz-Ambros' birth is frequently given as 1682, it may be that the father contributed to the first edition, and the brothers to the 1704 edition. The fact is, all editions are rare: we can locate no copy of any edition in the united states; only one copy (the Passau edition, at Oxford) in the British Isles; and only two copies anywhere (Bavaria State Library and Austrian National Library) of this 1704 edition

à...Petro & Jacobo Puteanis ordine Alphabetico primùm distributus; tum à...Ismaele Bullialdo Secundùm Scientias & artes digestus, Denique editus à Josepho Quesnell...Parisiis, impensis Directionis...nunc Vero Hamburgi, apud Christian. Liebezeit, Bibliopol. Engraved frontis. Title printed in red & black. 52 (incl. frontis.), [4], 510 pp.; 632 pp. Two vols. 8vo, cont. speckled calf (occasional minor foxing or browning), triple gilt fillets round sides, in corners of each cover the tool of a fleur-de-lys surmounted by a royal crown, spines richly gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spines. Hamburg: C. Liebezeit, 1704. Second edition (1st ed.: Paris: 1679) of "the most celebrated and frequently consulted seventeenth-century private library catalogue. The library was largely formed by Jacques Auguste De Thou (1553-1617), the eminent French historian and statesman. Although the purpose of its publication was the sale of the De Thou library, which took place in 1681, its continued usefulness called for a reprint in 1704 [the present edition]...Most of the descriptions are in fact not by the brothers Dupuy but by the well-known scientist Ismael Boulliau (1605-1694), who arranged them according to a bibliographical system which, with slight variations by Prosper Marchand (1676-1756), and Gabriel Martin (1679-1761), was the one most frequently adopted in France and became known as the 'Système des Libraires de Paris'."-Grolier Club, Bibliography, 76-(1st ed.). The "reprintings of catalogues of private libraries like those of the Thuana and the Aprosiana...are good evidence of the use of these catalogues as reference works. The books in all these collections have been scattered, and the reprinted catalogues could serve only bibliographers and scholars."-Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 110-(who also notes on page 265 that Schelhorn preferred the 1704 edition). Very fine set. With the bookplate of Wm. Constable (all his books are in wonderfully fresh condition and this is no exception). ❧ Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 208-09 & 211-12. .

        Topografia geometrica dell?Agro Romano

First edition.

Marvelous presentation copy, inscribed by Douat and bound in royal red morocco, of "the earliest (and perhaps the rarest) treatise on the theory of design" (Gombrich). Douat's book is the first book which gives a systematic graphical treatment of the theory of patterns, permutations and combinatorics, a subject that under the influence of Pascal, Fermat and Leibnitz was at the forefront of mathematics at the time.

"There are few places where the approaches of the artist and the scientist intersect more intimately than in the production and analysis of tiling patterns" (Smith), and certainly in not many works is this intersection more evident than in this book. Douat's work is largely based, as also acknowledged in the title, upon a previous study published by his fellow Carmelite Sebastien Truchet, an engineer interested in mathematics and art but also an expert in hydraulics, an inventor and the designer of the 'Romain de Roy', the first mathematically determined typeface. The mathematical background of Douat's theory is based on the quite simple observation that a square diagonally divided in two triangles of different colors, can be rotated (90 degrees, clockwise) in four different positions: these four variants (indicated by Douat as A, B, C and D) represent the basis for any further development. Sets of two of such variants can be arranged in 16 different ways; sets of three variants give 64 permutations; sets of all four variants result in 256 permutations. Taking each one of the 256 possibilities to be further combined with each other one we obtain 2562 = 65536 permutations. If we take each of the 65536 ... and so on ad infinitum. The book is divided in four parts: the first giving the necessary background to produce the different variants; the second one gives several different patterns as example; the third one provides the necessary explanations for the previous part and the fourth one gives instructions to obtain different patterns without the use of the permutations table and without a previous drawing of the desired design. Douat's work is much enlarged with respect to Truchet's short paper from 1704.

Until recently, the importance of this book was not widely recognized and certainly not fully appreciated, perhaps because it falls rather uncomfortably between a treatise on mathematics and a treatise on design. Guilmard dismissed this book as an 'ouvrage curieux à consulter'. Gombrich, however, describes Douat's book as "the earliest (and perhaps the rarest) treatise on the theory of design ...".. Large 4to (244 x 191 mm), pp [xvi] [1] 2-189 (p 53 mispaginated 35) with initial and final blanks, and 28 engraved plates with 72 designs. Inscribed on the title page 'Ex dono autoris R. P. Domini Douat', large crowned coat of of arms to front and rear board, richly gilt spine, all edges gilt, fresh and clean throughout. An exceptional copy of this beutiful and rare book
