The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, begun in the Year 1641. With the precedent Passages, and Actions, that contributed thereunto, and the happy End, and Conclusion thereof by the King's blessed Restoration, and Return upon the 29th of May, in the Year 1660. [3 Vols.]

Oxford: at the Theater 1704 - FIRST EDITION, mixed printings (see below), engraved portrait frontispiece in each volume, ruled in red throughout, ownership stamps of James Smyth dated 1756 in margin of each title-page, occasional minor soiling, faint dampmark in gutter of vol. ii, pp.[iv], xxiii, 557; [xvi], 581; [xxiv], 603, [xxi] (index), folio, contemporary panelled calf, marbled endpapers, black morocco lettering pieces, tidy repairs to spine ends (the top compartments on vols. ii and iii renewed), a little rubbed and marked, bookplates of Robert Smyth of Gaybrook, very good. 'The first edition was printed, not from the originals, but from a transcript of them made under Clarendon's supervision by his secretary, William Shaw. This was copied for the printers under the supervision of the Earl of Rochester, who received some assistance in editing it from Dr. Aldrich, dean of Christ Church, and Sprat, Bishop of Rochester. The editor, in accordance with the discretion given them by Clarendon's will, softened and altered a few expressions, but made no material changes in the text.' (DNB) Described by Lowndes as 'one of the noblest historical works of the English nation.' The first edition was printed in several batches over several years, each volume separately, and the various sheets warehoused together, resulting in several issue points - without clear priority, as after a certain point just about any combination of sheets might have been bound up in a set. In this copy, the first volume is dated 1704 (indicating a late printing) but there are no press figures (indicating an early printing). The second volume is also dated 1704 and has press figures (indicating a later printing). The third volume was only printed in one batch, so the copy here is from the first printing.

Dünnhaupt S. 737, 57.I.2. (QUERARD, T.3, 1901) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Tale of a Tub. Written for the Universal Improvement of Mankind. Diu multumque desideratum. To which is added, An Account of a Battel between the Antient and Modern Books in St. James’s Library.

Printed for John Nutt, London 1704 - Format: Octavo (7 1/4" x 4 3/8", 184mm x 113mm). Binder’s blank, A6 B-X8 Y2 [$4], binder’s blank; 168 leaves; [12], 322, blank. Collated perfect with the Teerink-Scouten copy (Penn PR3724 .T3 1704). Number of Volumes: Bound in contemporary (?) full grained calf with a single gold fillet border. Single gold fillet on edges of covers and on turn-down. On the spine, five raised bands with broken single gilt fillet. Panels with single gilt fillet top and bottom. Title gilt in second panel, date at tail. Head- and tail-piece with five gilt strokes. Marbled end-papers. All edges gilt. Slight wear to joints. Rear free end-paper precarious. Fresh and tight; a truly lovely copy. Priority of issue has never been established, but the present item leaves blank the word "uterinus" on p. 320, line 10. "A Tale of a Tub" was Swift’s first major published work. It is nominally a satiric allegory about the Western Church: (St.) Peter, Jack (Calvin) and Martin (Luther) inherit (and subsequently alter) "coats" from their "Father"; it is densely allusive and sardonic, replete with jibes at coevals and with artificial hiatuses (wittily described –huge, small, well-argued etc.) in the manuscript. It is riddled with digressions, such that the Tale is several, and takes on many subjects; to wit: "I have one Word to say upon the Subject of Profound Writers, who are grown very numerous of late ; And, I know very well, the judicious World is resolved to lift me in that Number. I conceive therefore, as to the Business of being Profound, that it is with Writers, as with Wells ; A Person with good Eyes may see to the Bottom of the deepest, provided any Water be there ; and, that often, when there is nothing in the world at the Bottom, besides Dryness and Dirt, tho’ it be but a Yard and a half under Ground, it shall pass, however, for wondrous Deep, upon no wiser a Reason than because it is wondrous Dark." (p. 217.) "The Battel between the Antient and Modern Books" is a literal one; the books themselves quarrel, rather than their authors or readers. It includes an attack on Richard Bentley and William Wotton, who questioned the authenticity of certain ancient texts. There is a third work in the collection, though not mentioned on the title-page, in epistolary form: "A Discourse Concerning the Mechanical Operation of the Spirit. In a Letter To a Friend. A Fragment." It is largely an attack on religious fanaticism, and on eccentric forms of worship. Altogether the book shows Swift’s mind at its sharpest, and is a wide if highly distorted window onto the intellectual world of the late seventeenth century. Teerink-Scouten 217, Rothschild 1992.

Doppelblattgr. Frontispiz (zum ‚Getreuen Schäfer‘), Haupttitel und 16 Bl. Vorrede (Dünnhaupt 1.I.9) – 2. Der Getreue Schäffer. 192 S. Mit 5 (teils verbundenen) Kupfertafeln. Die Alfeo-Vorrede ist von Lohenstein übertragen. (D. 1.II.5). – 3. Der Sterbende Socrates. Gestoch. Portr., Kupfertitel, Titel, 158 S. (D. 1.III.7) – 4. Helden-Briefe. Kupfertitel, 7 Bl., 160 S. (D. 1.IV.7). – 5. Poetische Geschicht Reden. 32 S. (D. 1.V.7) – 6. Hochzeit Gedichte. 64 S. (D. 1.VI.6) – 7. Begräbnüß Gedichte. 80 S. (D. 1.VII.6). – 8.

Best known for his Historical and Critical Dictionary (Dictionnaire historique) and his Philosophical Commentary (Commentaire Philosophique), Bayle's work influenced and advanced enlightenment thought of the 18th century. Bayle’s influence can be seen in the works of Diderot, Locke, Leibniz, Kant, Hume, Berkeley, among others. Bayle’s work combined biography, history, literary criticism, theology, in addition to philosophical treatments of toleration, the problem of evil, epistemological questions, etc. Bayle's extensive commentary propelled his reader's interest. (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) Bayle’s Commentary was written in the context of the 1685 revocation of the Edict of Nantes and the massacre and persecution of the Protestants in France. Bayle attempts to show that there is a biblical argument for toleration of heretics and considers the history of toleration and persecution of heresy and orthodoxy. Provenance: Bookplate and pencil signature of William Kerrian.

A mathematical and philosophical dictionary: containing an explanation of the terms, and an account of the several subjects, comprized under the heads of mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy, both natural and experimental

FIRST EDITION of the most comprehensive scientific encyclopaedia in English to date, and the only large one since Harris?s Lexicon Technicum (1704-1710) almost a century earlier. ?The dictionary reveals a deep and extensive knowledge of British and continental works and is still used by historians as a valuable source. The British reader was provided with bibliographical and biographical information on continental mathematicians such as D?Alembert, Euler, and Lagrange. The entries on engineering are particularly valuable, while mechanics, optics, and astronomy are less complete, especially from the point of view of mathematical treatment? (ODNB). It also includes the first publication of Thomas Pellett?s 1727 catalogue of Newton?s papers.Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca mechanica, pp. 169-170.2 volumes, 4to, pp. viii, 650; 2 leaves, pp. 756, and 37 engraved plates. Half-titles. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, green morocco labels (joints cracked but perfectly firm). Armorial bookplates of William Brodie.
