An Essay Towards a Proposal for Catholick Communion ... for the Effecting a General Peace. By a minister of the Church of England.

Sold by John Nutt, near Stationers-Hall. Hardcover. B01N9C5YRK 1704 first edition, 'Sold by John Nutt, near Stationers-Hall (London), 4 3/4 x 7 1/8 inches tall hardbound, tan cloth boards over brown leather spine, gilt lettering to spine, marbled endpapers, [14], 248 pp. 1827 prior owner name and Erith, Kent, England Franciscan monastery stamp to blank front free-endpaper, which has a bit of chipping to the fore edge. One-eighth-inch hole to lower margin of title page, with an ink prior owner name above the publisher's information. A prior owner, apparently an eighteenth century Franciscan monk, has inserted blank leaves at the rear of the volume, where he sets forth a beautifully handwritten, five-page 'Catholick Profession of Faith.' This has resulted in an equivalent number of blank leaves interspersed through the body of the printed work. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce early work advocating ecumenism - especially between the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches. The English Short Title Catalog (No. T5919) locates only nine copies at American institutions. ~D~ A work published anonymously by Joshua Bassett [or Basset] (circa 1641 - 1720), after he had converted to Catholicism. Bassett was an Anglican priest and English academic who declared himself a convert to Catholicism just a month after he was appointed, in December 1686, Master of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, by King James II. He was removed as Master in 1688, and was said to have died in poverty. This essay on Catholic communion, first published in 1704, was reprinted in 1879, with an introduction, in An Eirenicon of the Eighteenth Century by H.N. Oxenham. Bassett also wrote Reason and Authority (1687), and Ecclesiae Theoria Nova Dodwelliana Exposita (1713), the only work containing his name on the title page. . Very Good. 1704. First Edition.

Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa

1704 - PSALMANAAZAAR, George. An Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa, an Island Subject to the Emperor of Japan". By George Psalmanaazaar, a Native of the Said Land, now in London. London: Dan Brown et al., 1704. Octavo, modern full brown speckled calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label. $2500.First edition of one of the most notorious and successful publishing hoaxes, with 15 plates (two folding).Psalmanaazaar (actually a Frenchman whose real name was never discovered) originally presented himself in Europe as a Japanese. After teaming up with William Innes, he began presenting himself as a native of Formosa. "To improve his position, Psalmanaazaar, at Innes's instigation, prepared a full account of what he alleged to be his early life and experiences". It was completed in two months, and was issued before the end of 1704, with a dedication to Bishop Compton, as An Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa, an Island subject to the Emperor of Japan. There was prefixed a long introduction, describing his reception in England, his travels, and his conversion to Protestantism. He seized every opportunity of abusing the Jesuits, a policy which commended the work to English churchmen. In a later section the language, dress, religious beliefs, and political constitution of Formosa were set forth in detail". the book met with much success." When his mentor Innes abandoned him to become chaplain-general to the English forces in Portugal, Psalmanaazaar was unable to continue the imposture, and gradually lost credibility. By 1708, he was widely ridiculed in the press. Ex-library, with ink- and blind-stamps on the title page and dedication page.Occasional light foxing, neat paper repair to folding plate of Formosan alphabet. Attractive binding fine. Opticks: or, a Treatise of the Reflexions, Refractions, Inflexions and Colours of Light. Also Two Treatises of the Species and Magnitude of Curvilinear Figures

Nineteen folding engraved plates. Title printed in red & black. 2 p.l., 144, 137 pp., 1 leaf numbered "138" on recto, 139-211, [1] pp. Large 4to, cont. English panelled calf (very beautifully rebacked & recornered by Aquarius, minor dustiness), green morocco lettering piece on spine. London: S. Smith & B. Walford, 1704. First edition, and a fine, fresh copy, of one of the great classics in optics. "All previous philosophers and mathematicians had been sure that white light is pure and simple, regarding colours as modifications or qualifications of the white. Newton showed experimentally that the opposite is true: there are pure coloured rays which cannot be analysed by refraction, such as the green of the spectrum; just as there are coloured rays which can be analysed, such as the green formed by mixing blue and yellow light. Natural white light, far from being simple, is a compound of many pure elementary colours which can be separated and recompounded at will."-Printing & the Mind of Man 172. This book is distinguished in two other ways. First, it contains Newton's earliest mathematical papers in print, published here for the first time to assert his priority over Leibniz in the invention of the calculus. Second, it contains his set of sixteen "Queries" on the nature of matter which, in the 18th century, was considered to be the most important feature of the Opticks and had a profound influence on scientific thought. Very good and crisp copy. With the modern bookplate of Jean Michel Cantacuzène, a member of the princely family of Wallachia, Moldavia, and Russia. They descended from a branch of the Greek Kantakouzenos family, who, in turn, descended from the Byzantine Emperor John VI Cantacuzenus. Small stamp on verso of title of Sir Robert Harry Inglis, 2nd Baronet, F.R.S. (1786-1855), an English Conservative politician, noted for his staunch high church views. Preserved in a box. ?

Bibliografia: Cremonini pp. 83 - 90. Amsterdam Amsterdam 570 510

The Triumphs of God's Revenge Against the Crying and Execrable Sin of Wilful and Premeditated Murther, With His Miraculous Discoveries and Severe Punishment thereof in Thirty several Tragical Histories.

REYNOLDS, John. The Triumphs of God's Revenge Against the Crying and Execrable Sin of Wilful and Premeditated Murther, With His Miraculous Discoveries and Severe Punishment thereof in Thirty several Tragical Histories [etc] The Seventh and Last Edition. London, Printed for C.Griffin, and sold by the booksellers of London and Westminster 1704. Pp [xx] 481,1 [blank] Added engraved title-page.Numerous errors in paging but as far as we can see complete. Books II-VI have individual title-pages with imprint: London, Printed for Ben. Griffin and Sam. Keble, 1702. Versos of title-page and of individual title-pages are blank, and the running title reads: Gods revenge against murther.Pages are toned and foxed. Bound in recent full panelled calf in a contemporary style ( one of own bindings) using the original boards which have been re-used in the rebind, re-attached and completely re-covered in new aged leather. Completely re-sewn with handsewn headbands in the traditional manner. The spine is in seven compartments, with a red gilt title piece. The ffep has the ownership inscription of Thomas Payne dated 1704 and E.Earle ,the latter linked by marriage. We have sold perhaps half a dozen copies of this work over the years (it is a strong favourite!) and all of them have been foxed and toned to varying degrees. It is a delightful work however; full of scabrous tales of wicked foreigners with the most wonderful "strip cartoons" showing their various crimes and inevitable grisly punishments. A must for the illustrations alone. Visit our website on www.johnunderwoodbooks.com for other interesting books!
