Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa

1704. First Edition . PSALMANAAZAAR, George. An Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa, an Island Subject to the Emperor of Japan… By George Psalmanaazaar, a Native of the Said Land, now in London. London: Dan Brown et al., 1704. Octavo, modern full brown speckled calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label. $2500.First edition of one of the most notorious and successful publishing hoaxes, with 15 plates (two folding).Psalmanaazaar (actually a Frenchman whose real name was never discovered) originally presented himself in Europe as a Japanese. After teaming up with William Innes, he began presenting himself as a native of Formosa. “To improve his position, Psalmanaazaar, at Innes’s instigation, prepared a full account of what he alleged to be his early life and experiences… It was completed in two months, and was issued before the end of 1704, with a dedication to Bishop Compton, as An Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa, an Island subject to the Emperor of Japan. There was prefixed a long introduction, describing his reception in England, his travels, and his conversion to Protestantism. He seized every opportunity of abusing the Jesuits, a policy which commended the work to English churchmen. In a later section the language, dress, religious beliefs, and political constitution of Formosa were set forth in detail… the book met with much success.” When his mentor Innes abandoned him to become chaplain-general to the English forces in Portugal, Psalmanaazaar was unable to continue the imposture, and gradually lost credibility. By 1708, he was widely ridiculed in the press. Ex-library, with ink- and blind-stamps on the title page and dedication page.Occasional light foxing, neat paper repair to folding plate of Formosan alphabet. Attractive binding fine.

Nova Vulterrae delineatio.

      - Bodel Nijenhuis 1343; Nijhoff & V. Hattum 159. First and only edition of a detailed account of the topography and history of Oudewater, including transcripts of ordinances, charters and privileges, compiled and drawn up by the city's bailiff Gaspar Rudolph van Kinschot (1704-1748). With 2 plans of the city, in 1632 and 1746. The views show the "Nieuwe Poort", the castle in 1555, the town hall, the church and a single view showing both the ammunition depot and the orphanage. The inclusion of the arms of Alkmaar with Oudewater and Delft on the dedication engraving seems odd, but the book states (p. 67) that the three cities made an agreement, said to date from 1421, to extend rights to each other's citizens and that for this reason the three coats of arms appear together on many public buildings. With the bookplate of the Connecticut state senator (Charles) McKew Parr (ca. 1884?-post 1961) and his wife Ruth Parr. An occasional leaf with browned patches or marginal water stains, but otherwise in very good condition.

Historia Plantarum Species... De Plantis in genere...

London: M. Clark for H. Faithorne, 1686-1688-, 1704. Three volumes, folio, bookplate of Haskell Norman in first volume; some browning and scattered foxing particularly in the third volume (as usual); a handsome set in contemporary calf, a few scuffs, neat restoration to joints and heads of spines, banded spine gilt with double red morocco labels. A marvellous set: first edition, first issue, complete with the rare third volume published eighteen years after the main work in a single issue limited to only 200 copies, and notably including contemporary descriptions of some of the plants collected by Dampier on the northwest coast of Australia.John Ray was considered the "father of British botany" and this was his greatest work, the most important botanical text of the seventeenth century, and the foundation of modern botany. By the time he wrote the first volume Ray had gained an 'encyclopaedic knowledge of the literature of botany and horticulture, from ancient times to the work of his contemporaries, including the latest acquisitions from microscopy. His clear mind and balanced judgement enabled him to select the well-attested facts from this mass of material and to present them in a rational perspective... ' (Morton, History of Botanical Science). This work has specific importance for Australia. In 1699 Dampier, the first Englishman to land on the Australian continent, gathered together specimens of Australia's exotic flora. This collection of plants came from various places on the West Australian coast including Dirk Hartog Island, Shark Bay, near present-day Karratha, and East Lewis Island in the Dampier Archipelago south of Broome. Through his friendship with Thomas Woodward, Ray had on loan a large selection of Dampier's precious plant collection meaning that he was able, in the third volume of this work, to include a description of plants from Dampier's precious herbarium that had survived shipwreck on the navigator's return journey to England. In total, Ray described eighteen Dampier plants, nine from Australia, five from Brazil, one from Timor, two from New Guinea and one of an unknown locality. In turn, in Dampier's account of his voyage published in 1703, a translation of Ray's descriptions form the basis of his Account of Several Plants. John Ray's method of classification is called a polynomial system, a verbal description of the plant. At this time there was no set format for zoological or botanical descriptions, but if this format is far from ideal, it was nevertheless a milestone for Australian botany. This is the preferred first issue of the book, with the first state of the title pages to volumes one and two dated 1686 and 1688 respectively. A second issue appeared seven years later in 1693, while the important third volume containing Australian species was issued only once, in 1704.This copy is from the famous scientific library of the American collector Haskell F. Norman.

Opticks: or, a Treatise of the Reflexions, Refractions, Inflexions and Colours of Light. Also two Treatises of the Species and Magnitude of Curvilinear Figures.

London, printed for Sam. Smith, and Benj. Walford, Printers to the Royal Society, 1704 - 4to (242 x 188 mm), pp [iv] 144; 211 [recte 213] [1, errata], title in red and black, with 19 folding engraved plates; a very fresh, clean, unrestored copy in contemporary Cambridge panelled calf, minor wear. First edition, first issue, an untouched, large copy of 'one of the supreme productions of the human mind' (Andrade). The Opticks is Newton's mature statement of the nature of light, based on his original discovery that white light is a compound of pure elementary colours. In the Principia Newton had shown himself the consummate master of theoretical physics: the Opticks shows him no less the master of experimental method. The work concludes with a set of 'Queries', startling speculations on the nature of matter which had a profound influence on eighteenth-century and later thought. The two mathematical papers in Latin, appended to the work and published here for the first time, expressly assert Newton's priority over Leibniz in his third major contribution to science, the invention of the calculus.Babson 132; Wallis 174; Dibner 148; Horblit 79b; Norman 1588; PMM 172; Sparrow 150 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In basso, legenda alfabetica A-P. Large bird-eyes plan showing the town of Orbetello - Tuscany - durign the French siege of 1646. (QUERARD, T.3, 1901)

An Essay Towards a Proposal for Catholick Communion . for the Effecting a General Peace. By a minister of the Church of England.

Sold by John Nutt, near Stationers-Hall 1704 - B01N9C5YRK 1704 first edition, 'Sold by John Nutt, near Stationers-Hall (London), 4 3/4 x 7 1/8 inches tall hardbound, tan cloth boards over brown leather spine, gilt lettering to spine, marbled endpapers, [14], 248 pp. 1827 prior owner name and Erith, Kent, England Franciscan monastery stamp to blank front free-endpaper, which has a bit of chipping to the fore edge. One-eighth-inch hole to lower margin of title page, with an ink prior owner name above the publisher's information. A prior owner, apparently an eighteenth century Franciscan monk, has inserted blank leaves at the rear of the volume, where he sets forth a beautifully handwritten, five-page 'Catholick Profession of Faith.' This has resulted in an equivalent number of blank leaves interspersed through the body of the printed work. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce early work advocating ecumenism - especially between the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches. The English Short Title Catalog (No. T5919) locates only nine copies at American institutions. ~D~ A work published anonymously by Joshua Bassett [or Basset] (circa 1641 - 1720), after he had converted to Catholicism. Bassett was an Anglican priest and English academic who declared himself a convert to Catholicism just a month after he was appointed, in December 1686, Master of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, by King James II. He was removed as Master in 1688, and was said to have died in poverty. This essay on Catholic communion, first published in 1704, was reprinted in 1879, with an introduction, in An Eirenicon of the Eighteenth Century by H.N. Oxenham. Bassett also wrote Reason and Authority (1687), and Ecclesiae Theoria Nova Dodwelliana Exposita (1713), the only work containing his name on the title page. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: for Dan. Brown, Tim. Goodwin, John Walthoe, Tho. Newborough, John Nicholson, Tho. Benskin, Benj. Tooke, Dan. Midwinter, Tho. Leigh, and Francis Coggan, , 1704. explaining not only the terms of Art, but the Arts themselves. Folio (319 × 198 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, two- and three-line blind-rule border to covers, stoutly rebacked with red morocco label. Title page printed in red & black, engraved portrait frontispiece of Harris by George White after his father Robert, 7 engraved plates, wood-engravings in the text; printed in double columns. Boards with some surface erosion, stoutly rebacked, corners and inner hinges strengthened; frontispiece and title lightly toned, shelf marks and small worm hole to upper margin of title; two lower margins with short tears, occasional spotting and the odd stain; withal a very good copy. First edition. "John Harris, clergyman, mathematician, and (from 1709) secretary of the Royal Society, produced the first English encyclopaedia arranged in alphabetical order. He was the earliest lexicographer to distinguish between a word-book (dictionary, in modern parlance) and a subject-book (encyclopaedia proper), thereby overcoming the confusion which Isidore had introduced a thousand years earlier. His Lexicon Technicum appears to be the first technical dictionary in any language. The most famous of his contributors was Isaac Newton" (PMM). "Harris's encyclopaedia was distinguished not only for its excellent plates, but also for its text line-drawings and diagrams, and for its provision of bibliographies for some of the more important scientific subjects. So far, England had been translating French encyclopaedias for domestic use: within a few years the leading French encyclopaedia was to be based on the English works of Harris and his successors" (Collison, Encyclopaedias: Their History Throughout the Ages, p. 99). The book was first published by subscription as a single stand-alone volume, with Isaac Newton among the subscribers, followed in 1710 by a successful second volume.

        Triumphs of Gods Revenge

1704 - REYNOLDS, John. The Triumphs of Gods Revenge London: C. Griffin, 1704. Folio, contemporary full brown sheep sympathetically rebacked in brown calf, raised bands, brown morocco spine label. $1600.1704 edition of Reynolds’ dramatic collection of tales of violent revenge and murder, highly influential for its insights into the psychology of crime, an inspiration for the Elizabethan drama The Changeling and hailed by Godwin as a source for his gothic novel Caleb Williams, illustrated with copper-engraved title page and elaborate wood-engravings, this association copy with the bookplate of Tage La Cour, co-author of The Murder Book (1971)."In 1621 an Exeter merchant named John Reynolds published one of the earliest bestsellers in crime reporting The Triumphs of Gods Revenge" (Borowitz, Blood and Ink, 4). This electrifying work, with its vivid tales of violent revenge, lust, murder and equally bloody punishment, is increasingly held as a turning point in crime literature, especially in its insights into the psychology of crime. Through highly detailed accounts that are "fundamentally concerned with retracing the origins of criminal rebelliousness," Reynolds jars his readers into a sense of recognition, however hesitant, with criminals and their motives (Gladfelder, Criminality and Narrative, 34). Notably inspiring revenge dramas such as Middleton and Rowley’s masterpiece, The Changeling (1622), "by 1670 Triumphs had gone into a fifth edition (the first to be profusely illustrated with woodcuts), and new editions were still appearing a century later. The curious work had not exhausted its appeal by the end of the 18th century when the English novel began to reflect social and political didacticism. William Godwin acknowledged Reynolds’s ‘tremendous compilation’ as a source of inspiration for his own 1794 novel of murder and repentance, Caleb Williams" (Borowitz, 4). Stated seventh edition. With copper-engraved title page, letterpress title page printed in black and red, detailed wood-engraved pictorial chapter headings, and separate title pages for Books II-VI (each with imprint: London, Printed for Ben. Griffin and Sem. Keble. 1702). Occasional mispagination without loss of text. Early editions of this work are quite rare. Lowndes, 2078. Allibone, 1778. See STC 20924-20944; Wing 1308A-1313. Scarce association copy containing the bookplate of renowned Danish critic and author Tage La Cour, co-author of The Murder Book, An Illustrated History of the Detective Story.Text and plates generally fresh with light scattered foxing, occasional edge-wear to leaves without affecting text; slight edge-wear, rubbing to contemporary boards. An extremely good copy of this fascinating work.
