Carte Du Canada Ou De La Nouvelle France

Published in Paris in 1703 - A wonderfully detailed copper-plate engraved map with outline color of Canada and the Great Lakes by Guillaume De L’Isle published in Paris in 1703. Overall this map measures 26”x20.5”. It has been cut into 12 squares backed onto blue linen which fold into a portfolio. This map provided the most accurate rendering of the Great Lakes available at the time, with the lakes fully enclosed and properly placed in longitude and latitude. Despite some ambiguous details to the west, derived from Lahontan's theories, the depiction of the Great Lakes, their relation to Hudson's Bay, and of the rivers and lakes of the north was better than anything prior. An epic cartouche containing the titling and decorated with a beaver, indigenous peoples (one of whom is bearing a scalp), Jesuit explorers and centered with the French crown and coat of arms. De L'Isle was the best mapmaker of the period, enjoying the reportage from the French network of travellers, missionaries, merchants and military adventurers concerning their activities around the world. Overall this map is in very good condition with some light foxing and staining throughout.

Catalogus Omnium Elegantissimorum Librorum, qui in utroque Thesauro Antiquitatum Romanarum ac Graecarum Joh. Georgii Graevii et Jacobi Gronovii, in Folio XXIV. Voluminibus reperiuntur, Ordine alphabetico digestus

31 pp. 8vo, cont. calf-backed marbled boards. Leyden: P. van der Aa, 1703. First edition and rare. Graevius (1632-1703), German classical scholar and critic, was professor at Utrecht. He had a high reputation as a teacher and was a particular favorite of William III of England, who made him historiographer royal. His editions of the classics marked a distinct advance in scholarship. He is best remembered for his Thesaurus Antiquitatum Romanorum (1694-99), which is the first encyclopedic compilation of the knowledge of the ancient Roman world. His friend and colleague Jacobus Gronovius (1645-1716), Dutch classical scholar, published a complementary work -- Thesaurus Antiquitatum Graecarum (1697-1702) -- which dealt with ancient Greece. Both are compilations of earlier works by more than 120 contributors; they became standard reference tools throughout the 18th century. Following Graevius's death in early 1703, Peter van der Aa, the publisher of the two thesauri, decided to stimulate sales by issuing the present catalogue. It was designed to be a guide to the contents of each series. It lists the contributors and their texts found in the two thesauri. References to each series, volume, and page number are given. Fine copy. .

A New Mapp of the Estates of Savoy & Piedmont with the Countries Adjacent

London: Robert Morden & Christopher Browne, 1703. A very fine map of Savoy & Piedmont by two great English cartographers Robert Morden (d. 1703) was one of a new group of mapmakers who established the art of map publication in London on a permanent basis. As demonstrated in this excellent map of Savoy and Piedmont, Morden conveys the artistic and graphic standards of the late 17th century Dutch masters to English idiom. This is particularly true of the very fine engraving, evident here, that would not be typical of 18th century maps in general. Morden's early 18th century map of Savoy and Piedmont includes important topographical illustrations of this very mountainous region, but also, innovatively, main roads. The coats of arms of the House of Savoy, Piedmont and Tyrol are displayed around the title cartouche. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in very good condition overall.

        Reliquiae Bodleianae:

London - John Hartley 1703 - The scarce first edition of Reliquiae Bodleianae, edited by Thomas Hearne. Finely bound in late eighteenth century full calf with gilt lettering and decoration. With an armorial nameplate for William Carr on the front pastedown. Sir Thomas Bodley, 1545 1613, was an English diplomat and scholar, and founder of the Bodleian Library, Oxford. He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, and was admitted as fellow to Merton College. He began lecturing at Merton, and in 1565 he was formally appointed as the college's first Lecturer in Ancient Greek. He served in many college offices and in 1569 was elected as one of the University's junior proctors. On his return from European travels, Bodley was appointed gentleman-usher to Queen Elizabeth and he entered Parliament as member for Portsmouth in 1584. He was later to become a diplomat, but after years of intrigue, he retired from public life in 1596. From 1598, Bodley devoted his life to the library project that was to become the famous Bodleian library at Oxford. He was knighted in 1604. Thomas Hearne, 1678 - 1735, was an English antiquarian. He attracted attention at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, and was employed to compare manuscripts. In 1699 he was made assistant keeper of the Bodleian library, and in 1712 was appointed second keeper. As a nonjuror he refused to take the oaths of allegiance to King George I, and early in 1716 he was deprived of his librarianship. However, he continued to reside in Oxford, and occupied himself in editing the English chroniclers. Hearn refused several important academic positions, including the librarianship of the Bodleian and the Camden professorship of ancient history, rather than take the oaths. William Carr, 1862 - 1925, was a biographer for the Dictionary of National Biography, historian, magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant for Norfolk, England. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. The hinges are just starting. The front inner hinge is slightly strained. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some mild bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages have some browning and scattered spots. A small section from the lower right-hand corner of page 309is missing not affecting text. Overall the condition is very good. History of Religion, Catholicism- 10 Maps): Geographia sacra, sive notitia antiqua dioecesium omnium patriarchalium, metropoliticarum, et episcopalium veteris ecclesiae. Accesserunt in hac editione notae et animadversiones Lucae Holstenii.

Franciscus Halma, Amsterdam 1703 - Eighteen inch elephant folio in 18th century leather boards (slightly scuffed, slight worming inner hinges, but basically sound), with 6 banded gilt-decorated leather spine. (8), 332, 72 pp. Internally very clean with very little browning or foxing. Includes half title, dedication to Cardinal Richelieu, decorative and allegorical fronntispiece (by G. Vander Gouwe after G. Hoet) and 2 engraved dedication plates (inlcuding Holsten's tomb) after H. Eland and Goere. All 10 b&w engraved maps are in excellent condtion with crisp images. There are maps of England, Turkey, France, Greece, Italy, Europe, Spain, Arabia, North Africa and Palestine, with designations for the Holy Sees.Lucas Holsten (Luc Holste) was a geographer and theological writer, and his text was not in Vialart's original publication in 1641. The notes included with this 1703 edition were first published in 1666, but it is with this current offering that they first appeared together with the maps. There is an owners signature (Walter Bowman?) penned neatly on the verso of the frontispiece, and some hand written notes indicating the presence of a (12 leave) prospectus bound separately at the end, by Richard Pococke, and titled: Dissertatio de geographia Egypti, Londoni, 1743. These latter leaves were obviously bound in a bit later, with separate margins, and may have been the prospectus to his "A description of the East, and some other countries.", published from 1743-45 in 3 volumes. It is not clear why they were bound with Vialart's work, although there is another owner's note penned on the verso of the title page for the presumed Pococke prospectus indicating the location of some applicable maps. As to the offering here, this atlas of religious history (applicable to the late counter reformation) is uncommon, especially in such nice condition, and several copies are cited in the online KVK catalogue. Several of the maps herein have very decorative cartouches, with attribution to H. Eland. References: Graesse V, 172; Koemann II, 125. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem at Easter A. D. 1697, (Syria)

Printed at the Theater, Oxford 1703 - 12mo, 7 1/2 by 4 3/4, 142 pages, plus 7 unpag pps letters of testimony. Fresh, and historically accurate full calf binding by Fetterer, banded, with gilt lettering and decoration. Foxing to engraved title page, replaced front and rear blank prelims, otherwise, tightly bound, with 9 plates, five are folding. This is actually an uncharacteristically fine copy of a most elusive book in travel and exploration. Plates are uniformly excellent, unsplit foldouts, very sharp impressions, any foxing is trivial. Pages have scattered foxing, esp to the edges, mostly minor other than the engraved title page and the page following, but are generally clean, I find no rips or bends. A rare first edition, uncatalogued by WorldCat / OCLC, although subsequent editions are well represented. Arguably the most important book in the history and culture of travel or tourism, Maundrell writes of his three month journey in a unique way. Previous travel books were generally written from the point of religious fervor, or in vague and fantastic prose, but this book is an accurate description of his travels, his journal, amended for publication, even to offer precise dimensions of the monuments and sights, in his writings and illustrations. This book marks the delineation of the period of tourism per se, previously only for pilgrimages, exploration and the very rich, to the post Maundrell times where more common people could travel for pleasure and excitement, ergo, the start of the modern age of tourism. The book was a posthumous success, 7 editions to 1749, presumably in larger numbers than this first, somewhat heretical, edition. Moreover, Aleppo's success colored almost all travelogues from nearly the first day it was printed, its style was a quick winner, and latter authors were quick to sense this maturation in the taste's of the buying public. Bishop's work is one of the great and reliable accounts of the Quaker persecutions in New England. While himself a resident of England, he was in receipt of correspondence from Friends in America, much of which forms the basis of this work. On Dec. 19, 1660 the Colony of Massachusetts sent to Prince Charles a petition defending the hanging of three Friends in their legal jurisdiction. Bishop was much incensed by this attempted defense, and this catalogue of horrors was the result. "Most exhaustive contemporary indictment of God-fearing Puritans driven by insensate religious fervor to sickening brutalities against other religious fanatics who dared to differ from themselves. Witch-hunting was bad; this was worse" - Howes. SABIN 5631. CHURCH 571, 598 (refs). EUROPEAN AMERICANA 703/16. HOWES B481, "aa.".

New Voyages To North-America. Containing An Account of the several Nations of that vast Continent...A Geographical Description of Canada, and a Natural History of the Country

London: Printed for H.Bonwicke, T.Goodwin, M.Wotton, B.Tooke, and S.Manship, 1703. First Edition of the English Translation. Lahontan was only sixteen years of age when he first arrived in New France in 1683, as an officer in the colonial regular troops. During the next ten years he saw active service in the sieur de La Barre’s expedition against the Iroquois in 1684, in the Marquis de Denonville’s campaign against the Senecas in 1687, and in numerous skirmishes with the English. In 1693 he was appointed King’s lieutenant in Plaisance (Placentia), Newfoundland. His career, however, came to an abrupt end when he was accused of insubordination by the governor of Newfoundland, Jacques François de Brouillan. Lahontan fled to Portugal and spent the rest of his life in wandering exile, chiefly in Holland and Germany. The daily journals Lahontan faithfully kept during his stay in New France for the basis of this work, which gained such immense popularity that it went through no less than 25 legitimate and pirated editions within sixty years of its first publication (The Hague: 1703). Next to Louis Hennepin’s, his was the most widely read North American travel narrative of the eighteenth century. Despite the exposure, by Charlevois and his cartographer Bellin, of the fictitious nature of Lahontan’s voyage up the ‘Long River’ (the Minnesota), which seriously discredited the work, its overall authenticity is now generally acknowledged. In 1903, the American scholar R.G.Thwaites concluded that “in topography, geography, ethnology, and natural history, all of it the record of personal knowledge, Lahontan’s work stands as one of the important sources for the intimate study of New France.” The vivid and lively descriptions of New France, its social and political life, the manners and customs of the native inhabitants and their method of warfare, are further enhanced by Lahontain’s philosophical views. His notions about Christian dogmatism and the vices of European society which he contrasts with the virtues of the ‘noble savage’, presaged the work of Swift, Rousseau, and Voltaire. The first English edition was published in London under the patronage of the Duke of Devonshire and it is in many respects preferable to the first edition (The Hague: 1703). Lahontan was in London to supervise the printing and he himself corrected the engravings, which the “Dutch Gravers had murder’d...by not understanding their Explications, which were all in French.” (Preface) A map of Newfoundland here appears for the first time and the edition incorporates, in expanded form, the contents of the supplement, detailing the author’s travels in Europe and the controversial dialogue with the mythical Indian ‘Adario’ (identified by some historians as the Huron chief Kondiaronk). "Carte du Canada ou de la Nouvelle France" from Atlas de Geographie

Paris: Guillaume Delisle, 1703. THE BEST MAP OF THE GREAT LAKES, SHOWING THE DISCOVERIES OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY Copper-plate engraving with original hand outline color: 191/2" x 261/4" References: Conrad E. Heidenreich & Edward H. Dahl, "The French Mapping of North America in the Seventeenth Century," The Map Collector (June, 1982): 9-11; R. V. Tooley, The Mapping of America (London, 1985), 20. This is a foundational map in the history of the mapping of New France, the Great Lakes and the Upper Mississippi, and was closely copied by the best French and English mapmakers of the early eighteenth century. This particular example is an exceedingly rare first-edition, first-issue of Delisle's map, which was re-issued numerous times due to its superb quality and accuracy (this is the only issue of the map to include the address "Rue de Canettes" rather than "Rue de l'Horloge" in the dedication). The map is significant for two important reasons. It is the first printed map to show Detroit only two years after its founding by Cadillac and the rendering of the Great Lakes is remarkably accurate. Among the many other points of interest on the printed map is the improved course of the Ohio River. It was the most accurate map of New France to date and the first to correctly depict the latitude and longitude and grid, based on current astronomical innovations. Guillaume, who had also studied with the great French astronomer, Jean Cassini, was responsible for the scientific calculations of longitude and latitude. The "Carte du Canada ou de la Nouvelle France" marked the culmination of seven years of research by the father-and-son team of Claude and Guillaume Delisle, two of the most distinguished cartographers of the seventeenth century. Their efforts were assisted by reports from trading expeditions in the 1680s, as summarized by Franquelin Joliet, official cartographer of New France. Franquelin's manuscripts, which were compiled from the most recent information collected by the Jesuits, are among the most impressive and valuable historical records of the period. Franquelin's depiction of the Upper Mississippi, stressing its proximity to the waters of Lakes Superior and Michigan and Lanhontan's imaginary geography to the west, was freely accepted by Delisle. Despite the assistance of Franquelin's manuscripts, however, this map is equally a product of the extensive field research of the Delisle's themselves.. First Edition. Book.
