Quante le grazie son. Solo cantata for alto and basso continuo. [Score]. Autograph musical manuscript signed "Aless.o Scarlatti."

June 4, 1703 - The only known autograph of this unpublished work. Rostirolla 538 (recorded as being held in the Louis Koch collection). Hanley diss. 598 (recorded as being held in the Floersheim collection). Kinsky: Manuskripte, Briefe, Dokumente von Scarlatti bis Stravinsky: Katalog der Musikautographensammlung Louis Koch (Stuttgart: Krais, 1953), p. 1 (with detailed discussion of provenance). Not in Dent. The author of the text is not known."Scarlatti’s chamber cantatas reveal perhaps more strikingly than any other class of his works his unbroken continuity with preceding phases of the Baroque era and his separation from the following period. With more than 600 known cantatas for which his authorship is reasonably certain and well over 100 others less reliably attributed to him, he is clearly the most prolific cantata composer. These works crown the history of a genre which over more than a century of vigorous growth held a rank second only to opera; indeed contemporaries generally placed it above opera in refinement and regarded it as the supreme challenge to a composer’s artistry. Scarlatti was among the last to contribute significantly to its literature." Edwin Hanley in Grove Music OnlineWe have located only two other autograph manuscripts of Alessandro Scarlatti having been offered for public sale since 1945, both having been sold by Sotheby's, one in 1949 and the other in 1953. Oblong quarto (ca. 200 x 275 mm). Wrappers. Sewn. With manuscript titling to dark yellow octagonal label in the hand of the Austrian collector Aloys Fuchs (1799-1853) to upper: "Cantata No. 3 aus E mol[!] per Soprano col Basso continuo comp: da Cavaliere d'Alessandro Scarlatti M.D.C. a Napoli dto. 4. July 1703. Partitura Autographa" and "Ex collectis Al. Fuchs 1832" to lower right corner.1f. (title), [5], [iii] (blank staves) pp. Notated in black ink on high quality paper on 12 staves ruled with 6-stave rastrum 87 mm. wide. With autograph date "4 Giug[n]o 1703" to upper left and autograph signature "Aless.o Scarlatti" to upper right corner of first page. Watermark of a fleur-de-lys evident to folio 4. With early manuscript foliation "131" to "134" in an unidentified hand.Titling to title page in the hand of Aloys Fuchs: "Cantata in E mol[!] per la Voce di Alto coll' Basso continuo comp: 4:o Giug: 1703 di Cavagliere Alessandro Scarlatti. M. di Capella a Napoli. (Nato 1659 † 24. Ottobre 1725.) Partitura Autographa." Various numbers to upper wrapper, most probably shelfmarks from previous collections.Inscription in ink in the hand of the Italian collector Fortunato Santini (1778-1862) to head of first page of music: "Fortunato Santini al Sig Aloysio Fuchs."The cantata consists of six unnumbered movements: [Recitative:] "Quante le grazie son"Aria: "Se m'amasse la mia bella" (D major; C-time)[Recitative:] "Vedo di quando in quando"Aria: "Nò non lusingarmi" (F major; 12/8 time)[Recitative:] "Tolga il Ciel" Aria: "La vita mia tu sei" (E minor; C- time)ProvenanceFortunato Santini, whose inscription suggests that he gave (or sold) it to the Austrian collector Aloys Fuchs, with Fuchs's autograph note suggesting that he acquired it in 1832; the German composer and choral conductor Siegfried Ochs (1858-1929); Louis Koch (1862-1930), whose large collection of musical autographs remains legendary; Koch's daughter Marie (b. 1895) and son-in-law Rudolf Floersheim (1897-1962); Georges Floersheim (d. 1997).       Amstelaedami (Amsterdam), apud Henricum Wetstenium, ut & Rod. & Gerh. (indexes), slight browning and foxing in places, minimal worming to bottom of endpaper and first pages of vol. 2, mounted on front marbled endpaper of both volumes is a leaf with Latin text and an heraldic bookplate 'Ex Bibliotheca Ducis Thomae Vargas Maccivcca', marvelous full calf binding on raised bands, rich gold tooled decoration to spines and both covers, with the arms of Pope Pius VI on center of both covers, spines with gilt morocco labels, top of spines partly torn off, top of two hinges starting, corners somewhat bumped and scratched, red edges. Fine. Most exceptional copy.. Splendid entirely gold tooled copy of the first collected edition of John Forbes' works, with the arms of Pope Pius VI (1717-1799), and with bookplate of Thomas II (1760-1843), Lord and Duke of Vargas. John Forbes, born in Aberdeen, studied at King's College there, at Heidelberg, and other continental universities. He returned to Aberdeen in 1620 to take up a post as Professor of Divinity. Due to his inclinations to episcopalism he lost his professorship in 1640, fled to Holland in 1642 , and returned back to Scotland in 1644. He refused to sign the covenant proposed by Charles I for remodelling the church in Scotland and firmly iterated his presbyterian principles. His spiritual diary, which in the above work is translated from English into Latin, is one of the more illuminating spiritual autobiographies of the 17th century. This collected edition includes Forbes capital works "Instructiones historico-theologicae, de doctrina Christiana" (= vol. 2), and "Irenicum amatoribus veritatis et pacis in ecclesia Scoticana" (p. 361-500 of vol. 1), a sort of apology of the episcopal systems. Although, at first sight, 8 pages seem to be missing in the first volume, it appears, after comparison with another copy, that this copy is complete anyway; the jump from 524 to 533 is simply a numeration error. Please notify before visiting to see a book.

Jahrhunderts in Zedlers Universal-Lexicon übernommen. (Zitat)

Some thoughts on the present state of affairs. Humbly offered to the high court of Parliament / by a lover of his Queen and countrey (sic). WITH: -----. Some thoughts *upon* the present state of affairs.

Printed in the Year, 1703, [Edinburgh] - Together two volumes, small quarto. 12 pp., COMPLETE. Stitched in old blue paper wrappers at a recent date. Contemporary (or near-contemporary) author attributions in ink on title-pages, faint blind-stamps on first and final leaves of both pamphlets. BOTH editions of Sinclair's pamphlet recommending Scottish parliamentary reform, such as a triennial act, as well as toleration for dissent. The pamphlet demonstrates a royalist thread in Country discourse that can be linked to Episcopalian interests. Two editions appeared in 1703, both sina loca (but Edinburgh). The first edition is ESTC T57077. The second edition is distinguished by the title: 'Some thoughts *upon* the present state of affairs' (ESTC T155643). Priority is here established for the first time, afforded by careful examination of both editions side-by-side; it seems probable that ESTC T155643 was printed from ESTC T57077: compare the catchword on p. 2: in ESTC T155643 this catchword is typographically defective and seems to tumble outside the margin, whereas in ESTC T57077 the catchword, all all associated justification, is quite perfect. Sir Archibald, knight, (Baronet of Longformacus) was M.P. for Kirkwall, Orkney, and served in the Scottish Parliament for Wick from 1690-1702. He was admitted to Advocate in 1695, and was invested as a Knight ca. 1697 (cf. Burke's Peerage, 1847, p. 905, and Cokayne's Baronetage, reprinted 1983, vol. III, p. 351). Hanson, 261. Kress, S-2273.         Of the law of nature and nations

Eight books. Written in Latin by the Baron Pufendorf, Counsellor of State to His late Swedish Majesty, and to the present King of Prussia. Translated into English, from the best edition. With a short introduction.Samuel von Pufendorf (1632-1694), a distinguished German jurist, had moved to Lund in 1670 and there published De jure Naturae et Gentium libri octo (1672). "In the De jure Naturae et Gentium libri octo Pufendorf built on the work of Grotius and extended and developed it. Against Hobbes's view he contended that the state of nature was one of peace, not war, and he urged the view that international law was not confined to Christendom but existed between all nations.         Atlas.[Amsterdam, Theodorus and Cornelis III Danckerts?, ca. 1706 (dated maps 1694-1706)]. Imperial folio (53.5 x 33.5 cm). Composite atlas, with an engraved title-page, 43 double-page engraved maps and 4 double-page engraved tables, all beautifully coloured in a consistent and balanced manner by a contemporary hand, probably in the workshop of the publisher. With maps by Johannes, Justus, Theodorus and Cornelis III Danckerts, Carel and Abraham Allard, Nicolaas Visscher I & II, Frederik de Wit, Pieter Mortier, Caspar Specht and even Alexis-Hubert Jaillot in Paris. Modern maroon sheepskin.

Cf. Koeman, Dan 4. A splendid composite atlas in a beautiful and well-balanced colouring, probably from a single professional workshop, including the work of Johannes Danckerts, Justus Danckerts, Theodorus Danckerts, Cornelis Danckerts, Carel Allard, Abraham Allard, Nicolaas Visscher I & II, Frederik de Wit, Pieter Mortier, Caspar Specht) and even a map of North America by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot in Paris. The makeup of the atlas resembles that of one published by Theodorus and Cornelis III Danckerts sometime between 1703 and 1713 (Koeman, Dan 4). Not only do 13 of the present 20 Danckerts maps and plates appear in that atlas, but it also apparently begins with the same allegorical title-page, drawn by Gerard van Houten and engraved by Petrus Schenk I and ends with the same plate of flags. Both include Cornelis Danckerts's Nieuw Aerdsch Pleyn, a world map in an equidistant polar projection. Although nearly half the maps in the present atlas are by the Danckerts family, several of the most recent maps in the atlas are by Pieter Mortier, but given the strong French flavour of his atlases, the present does not seem to fit into his oeuvre. With the title-page somewhat tattered and with a restoration affecting the end of the banderole, but generally in good condition, with occasional minor tears and folds. A composite atlas apparently assembled and coloured by an Amsterdam map publisher ca. 1706.A complete list of the maps is available on request.

Re Equaria oder von der Stuteren oder Fohlen Zucht

1703. WINTER, Georg Simon. Engraved title-page, [22], 223, [5] pp. Illustrated with 46 engraved equestrian plates. Folio, 331 x 210 mm, bound in near-contemporary German marbled boards. Nuremberg: Wolfgang Moritz Endters, 1703. |~||~| One of the few equestrian books of the Baroque period to be published in four languages. "In addition to offering counsel on choosing horses, their various qualities, their hygiene, their upkeep, etc., and of the necessities of the Riding Master and his employees, Winter enlightens us on all sorts of amulets and preservatives against sorcery... these singular principles on the upkeep of the horse were omitted from the first edition of the work [1672], but, happily, were included in later editions [1687 and 1703]" (Mennessier de La Lance). The text, in Latin, German, Italian and French, appears in parallel columns and is illustrated with 46 full or double-page equestrian plates of high quality, all of considerable interest to breeders, trainers, and veternarians. Of special interest are the plates of horse-monsters including a horse with two human feet and a long mane; a horse with a vast tail; a horse with eight hooves; a horse with a human head; a horse with front hooves upturned; a horse with six hooves; a monstrous horse-dog with three legs, including one human leg and foot; and several hermaphrodites. One double-page plate repaired, one full-page plate with corner torn away. Second flyleaf torn, perhaps with the loss of an early inscription. Despite some wear to the binding, in very good condition. Provenance: G. W. Gunther Nurnberg with small oval ink stamp. Nissen, ZBI 4426. Mennessier de La Lance II, 649.

Neu eroeffnete Welt Galleria. Die kaiserliche Hoffstatt in Wien

1703. ABRAHAM A SANTA CLARA (i.e. Ulrich Megerle). [4] ff. With 100 costume plates by Caspar Luyken executed by Christian Weigel. Folio, 355 x 231 mm, bound in early nineteenth-century quarter calf over marbled boards, rebacked, original spine laid down. Nuremberg: Christoph Weigel, 1703.|~| Beautiful and celebrated collection of 100 costume plates by Caspar Luyken, executed by Christian Weigel, here presented to Emperor Joseph, King of Hungary, by the Predicator of the Viennese court by Ulrich Megerle (a.k.a. Abraham à Santa Clara). "A veritable compendium of Viennese culture about the year 1700" (Faber du Faur), preceded by a long "Eingang der Galleria" by Megerle. Illustrated herein are superb costume plates of royalty, illustrious persons, courtisans, dignitaries, merchants, laborers, generals, ladies, gentlemen, soldiers, Turks, Jews from Frankfurt and Poland, American Indians, Africans, Asians, Russians, Armenians, Persians, Spaniards, Greeks, and more. Many of the subjects were drawn from life and are portrayed within their native habitat; therefore the views depict, i.a., the Escorial and Spanish castles, the Serail at Istanbul, the great Park of Versailles, the Palace at Budapest, the most beautiful monuments of Vienna, and of Venice. The illustrations are elegant, precise, and extremely well composed; the engravings are executed with remarkable finesse. There is an early repair to the plate 82 depicting "Ein Verschnitter," some minor spotting or browning; title remounted, but an excellent copy. Of the greatest rarity: only microfilms and facsimile reprints are listed in RLIN and OCLC (although copies exist in the Spencer Collection at NYPL and at Yale). Faber du Faur 1123. Colas 2189. 4 h. 502 pp. 9 h. En español. Book in spanish.
