1701. Ten Individual original pages of an early 18th century printing of an Antiphonarium which became the standard version for Catholic families in Germany (accompanied by a photo-copy of the cover page of the original complete volume with handwritten note about original owner). These pages appear to be from a copy owned or used by Josephus Annegarm who was a professor of church history, theologian and popular writer. His UNIVERSAL HISTORY (in 8 volumes - 1827) was written primarily for Catholic youth and became a standard work for Catholic families in Germany. An Antiphonary, Antiphonal, "Antiphony" or Antiphoner (Latin antiphonarium, antiphonarius, antiphonarius liber, antiphonale; Greek 'antíphonon, antiphon, antiphone, anthem) is one of the liturgical books intended for use in choro (i. e. in the liturgical choir), and originally characterized, as its name implies, by the assignment to it principally of the antiphons used in various parts of the Roman liturgy. In current usage Antiphoner refers more narrowly to books containing the chants for the Divine Office in distinction to the Gradual (Graduale or more rarely antiphonarium Missarum), which contains the antiphons used for the Mass.[1].

[Defoe, Daniel]
[London], 1701. Later, pirated edition. [ii], 22 pp. A-C4. 1 vols. 8vo. 19 cm. Disbound. Later, pirated edition. [ii], 22 pp. A-C4. 1 vols. 8vo. 19 cm. His defense of the Dutch-born King William and satire of English xenophobia made Defoe "one of the best-known men in London" (ODNB). In the preface to the 1703 edition, Defoe clarifies his intent: "I only infer that an Englishman, of all men, ought not to despise foreigners as such, and I think the inference is just, since what they are to-day, we were yesterday, and to-morrow they will be like us. If foreigners misbehave in their several stations and employments, I have nothing to do with that; the laws are open to punish them equally with natives, and let them have no favour. But when I see the town full of lampoons and invectives against Dutchmen only because they are foreigners, and the King reproached and insulted by insolent pedants, and ballad-making poets for employing foreigners, and for being a foreigner himself, I confess myself moved by it to remind our nation of their own original, thereby to let them see what a banter is put upon ourselves in it, since, speaking of Englishmen ab origine, we are really all foreigners ourselves." The pamphlet was first printed in in Jan, 1701, according to Moore, with a title page date of 1700. There followed 9 more authorized edtions in 1701 -- and an untold number of pirated copies, which Defoe himself estimated at 80,000 copies. Moore 28 (first edition); Defoe, Daniel: An Explanatory Preface, in A true collection of the writings of the author of the True Born English-man, 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

NOLIN, Jean Baptiste.
Paris: Nolin, c.1701. Faint original outline colour. 255 x 345mm. A map showing not just Italy south to Naples, but also Switzerland, France north to Paris and Austria north to Vienna. It was published near the start of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), when France went to war with Austria over whether a Habsburg or a Bourbon was going to rule. It carefully marks the roads from Paris to Italy, via the Alps and the coastal routes, as well as the routes the Austrian armies would take from Vienna. Unfortunately for the French the Imperial armies were led by Prince Eugene of Savoy, whose skill prevented the French using their superior resources. By the end of the war most of the Spanish possessions in Italy were ceded to Austria.
