Eighteenth and nineteenth century ownership inscriptions on front pastedown and the blank verso of the portrait. A crisp clean copy includes the final blank. *Tyrrell was a Whig theorist, friend and colleague of John Locke, whose writings were important for the history of liberalism. In this study of Moral Philosophy he concludes that the notion of "the Common Good" is not only the whole law of Nature but the revealed Law of Moses and the great design of Christ's coming into the World. The second part of the work is an interesting point by point comparison of Hobbes' Principles with the law of nature as he sketched it in the first part. Tyrrell was a popularizer who made the political theories accessible to the general public (see Julia Rudolph "Revolution By Degrees: James Tyrrell and Whig Political Thought in the Late 17th Century"). 1 volume.

Minor soiling and discolouration in top margin and top of centerfold of the map. Skilfully repaired tears at the top of the centerfold, otherwise good condition. This handsome, topographical map of Spain and Portugal is from Atlas de Géographie, De l'Isle's great atlas. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. He was probably the most influential mapmaker of the 18th century. Koeman, C & M 7, #66.

AN ESSAY UPON MIRACLES. IN TWO DISOURSES

London: Printed for Charles Harper, 1701. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. 203 x 146 mm (8 x 5 3/4"). 8 p.l., 277, [3] pp. FIRST EDITION. FINE CONTEMPORARY CRIMSON MOROCCO, GILT, BY ROBERT STEEL, covers with French fillet border, central floral frame with triangular filigree sidepieces and oblique fleuron cornerpieces, raised bands, spine heavily gilt in compartments adorned with curls and small tools, black morocco label, gilt-rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. A Large Paper Copy. ESTC T83611. Front joint a bit rubbed and with three very short cracks (spine ends and rear joint minimally worn), darkened areas on front board, but the binding entirely solid, with shining gilt, and AN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE COPY INTERNALLY, almost preternaturally clean, fresh, and bright. From the beginning of the 18th century, but typical of earlier examples from the Restoration period, this pleasing binding is characteristic of the work of Robert Steel (sometimes spelled "Steele"), regarded as one of the best binders of his day. The floral roll employed in the cover frame here is the same as that which is used on the Steel bindings appearing as item #70 in Maggs Catalogue 1212, item #25 in Maggs Catalogue 861, item #118 in Maggs Catalogue 1075, and item #98 in Breslauer Catalogue 106. From 1668-75 Steel was an apprentice to Samuel Mearne (1624-83), described by Davenport as simply "one of the greatest bookbinders of any time," and, in any case, one of the most important persons in the bookselling community of the period, having been granted (with his son Charles) the life-long offices of Bookbinder, Bookseller, and Stationer to the King in 1675. Steel is thought to have taken over the tools of the Mearne bindery shortly after the death of Charles Mearne in 1686, and he may even have taken over the Mearne premises in London's Little Britain. In 1705, English bookseller and author John Dunton (1659-1733) said that when he "met with a Nice [i.e., discerning] Customer, no binding wou'd serve him but Mr. Steele's," celebrated as they were for their "Fineness and Goodness." Steel died ca. 1710, and the business was continued by his widow (or, as Nixon argues, his daughter) Jane, until 1718. Ranked among the most eloquent preachers of his time, William Fleetwood (1656-1723) regularly addressed audiences including the mayor and corporation of London, the king, both houses of Parliament, and other august public organizations. He was later named chaplain to William III and Mary II. Fleetwood defines a miracle to be "an extraordinary operation of God, against the known course and settled laws of nature, appealing to the senses." Although our binding is historically significant and well preserved, it is the amazing condition of the text here that is especially memorable.

Masehafa mazemurate zaDawite, hoc est psalterium Davidis Aethiopice et Latine, cum duobus impressis & tribus MSStis codicibus diligenter collatum & emendatum [ ]

Johannem David. Zunner, Francurti ad Moenum 1701 - 4t0. pp. [8], 427, [1]. Ethiopic text and Latin translation on opposite pages. Title page is printed in red and black with the first three lines in Ethiopic. Bound in full period calf with spine gilt in six compartments – rubbed; a small spot on the front hinge is professionally strengthened. The title page contains scattered foxing and is age-toned / tanned around the edges. The interior pages are generally clean and crisp with only minor age toning and spots of foxing. The bottom corner tip of the margin on p. 273-74 is clipped / torn. Some discoloration is present on pp. 228-229 where a small slip of early decorative paper was used as a book mark. The inside front and rear covers contain an institutional stamp; a "released" stamp and an early institutional book plate are also located on the inside front cover. No other library or institutional stamps are present. The front free fly leaf displays a couple of inscriptions in early hands (one with date 1828). Hiob Ludolf (1624-1704) was an important German orientalist who is considered the founder of modern western Ethiopian studies. This is the first complete edition of Ludolf’s Ethiopic Psalter with Latin translation. (An earlier edition of Psalms I-V was published in Frankfurt (1699) as a specimen). Ludolf, with the assistance of Johann Heinrich Michaels, used the 1513 and 1518 editions of the Ethiopic Psalter as well as three manuscripts in preparing his new edition (See Darlow). Other Biblical hymns and prayers including the Song of Solomon (in Ethiopic only) are also included. The last section of the book (pp.345-427) is devoted to extensive scholarly notes – variae lectiones et notae – on the individual Psalms. [Darlow & Moule 3572; Brunet IV, 921; Graesse V, p. 469]. Les Costes aux Environs de la Riviere de Misisipi

Paris 1701 - This map focuses on the French explorations and discoveries in the Mississippi Valley and the Gulf Coast. Here, de Fer highlights information gleaned from the expeditions of La Salle and Iberville and its primary purpose was to show the progress of French exploration in the region. The map shows the basically correct relationship of the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico. La Salle had explored the Mississippi from the north in 1682-83 and returned by sea to establish a French colony in 1685. He missed the Mississippi delta and landed on the Texas coast, an error probably due to his inability to calculate longitude and because prominent maps of the period placed the mouth of the river far to the west of its true location. The site of La Salle's ill-fated colony near Matagorda Bay in modern Texas is shown and the title cartouche also dramatizes the explorer's tragic death at the hands of his own men., Size : 225x340 (mm), 8.875x13.375 (Inches), Original Outline Coloring

Traité médico-philosophique sur l'aliénation mentale mentale, ou la manie.Paris: Chez Richard, Caille et Ravier, An IX [1800-01].

First edition, a fine copy, of "one of the foremost medical classics, giving as it did a great impetus to humanitarian treatment of the insane." (Garrison).

❧Grolier/Horblit 54; Lilly Notable Medical Books 155; Norman 1701; Heirs of Hippocrates 1070; Garrison-Morton 4922.

Philippe Pinel's Traité médico-philosophique sur l'aliénation mentale mentale, ou la manie, which presented the textual foundation of psychiatry, stands as the first great publication of the nineteenth century in clinical medicine, and at the same time as one of the paradigmatic expressions of the medical and scientific revolution that was taking place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. A reform movement had begun gathering momentum in Paris during the 1780s, calling for a new approach to medicine based upon observation, experience, new nosologies, and expanded use of autopsies for pathological studies. Pinel was a leader in this movement, helping to reorganize hospitals, establish a new medical curriculum, unify medicine and surgery, and promote hospital-based patient study and direct clinical experience.
"In August 1793 Pinel was appointed 'physician of the infirmatories' at the Bicêtre, the public hospice for men in Paris that included two hundred mentally ill patients. For nineteen months he made extensive studies of these men, whom he released from the chains that had been used to confine mental patients. In 1795 Pinel left the Bicêtre to assume the position of chief physician at the Salpêtriére, the large Paris hospital for women with mental disorders and chronic illnesses. There he established an advanced psychiatric hospital and the first training program for the new specialty of psychiatry. The principles later described in Pinel's Traité were applied at the Salpêtriére, which became the most highly recognized institution in the world at that time for its clinical care and treatment of the mentally ill and for its related teaching and research activities.
"In his Traité, Pinel departed from past interpretations of mental illness, which placed it within a supernatural or spiritual, rather than a somatic, realm, and accepted the mentally ill as legitimate patients in the domain of medicine. According to Pinel, the manifestations of insanity, including disturbed reason, inappropriate thought, bizarre behavior, and exaggerated passions, represented phenomena of natural history and its pathology that could be studied like those of any other medical or surgical condition. He studied the historical development, treatment, and outcome of mental illnesses, often for years, and if the illnesses resulted in death, he called for autopsies to examine tor pathological anatomy. Pinel's system of treatment for mental illness included good hygiene, a favorable environment, activities, work, and the avoidance of drastic physical and medical measures. He introduced a psycho-therapeutic technique called moral therapy, which used a kind and benevolent approach to the patient during interviews.
"Pinel had a great interest in nosography, but his classification system for psychiatry was deliberately simple. He described five different species of mental derangement: (1) melancholia, (2) mania without delirium, (3) mania with delirium, (4) dementia, and (5) idiotism. Pinel held that the prime need for psychiatry was to establish an effective typology of insanity, with descriptions of specific disease entities. He believed that traumatic events in a person's life could initiate insanity in one so predisposed, and he illustrated this concept with examples of loss of love, fortune, and other stress-provoking situations such as the turmoil that occurred during the French Revolution.
"Apart from his contributions to medicine and psychiatry, Pinel was a remarkable linguist, trained in classical Greek and Latin as well as the contemporary European languages. He cherished a deep respect for Hippocrates and the latter's humanitarian and observational approach to medicine. Pinel was also an intimate member of the main intellectual movement of the period, the Idéologues. The last of the French Philosophes, the Idéologues introduced a practical movement toward a more complex and organic conception of nature, humankind, and society; for them science and experimentation were essential to their encompassing concepts. Pinel's circle of friends included Condillac, Condorcet, Cabanis, Destutt de Tracy, and Benjamin Franklin, as well as many other major physicians and scientists.
"A second, enlarged edition of Pinel's Traité was published in 1809 with the abbreviated title Traité médico-philosophique sur l'alienation mentale. Translations appeared in German (1801), Spanish (1804), English (1806), and Italian (1830)." London: W. Rogers, R. Knaplock, A. Bell & T. Cockeril 2nd edition corrected and somewhat enlarged, 1701. Hardcover. Very Good-. Octavo original panelled leather with blind tooled darker and lighter panels, floral corner ornaments & swags, rebacked on 5 raised bands with gilt red spine label (tips worn) lxxii +380pp +[2]pp booklist.
