Ex-libris Amilius Picard Avenionensis. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

à Cologne (Amsterdam): Chez Pierre Gaillard, 1701 - Wonderful edition of this famous collection of ribald tales modelled on the Decameron. The engravings are by the llustrator Romeyn de Hooghe, who "here displays his accustomed talent for devising a striking composition through which to interpret each story, and his actors perform their usual force and decisiveness. Over the last two decades de Hooghe has achieved a place in the pantheon of outstanding illustrators.and Les cent nouvelles nouvelles are eagerly sought by collectors." - Ray Two editions with the same imprint from the same year have been noted: one with the illustrations printed separately from the text; the other with the engravings set within the text. Although the priority is unknown, according to Cohen-de-Ricci "in all copies where the illustrations were separately printed , the quality is inferior to those with the engravings printed within the text." (HOOGHE, ROMEYN DE) First edition with De Hooghe's illustrations. 2 vols., 8vo (15 x 10 cm.). Engraved additional title page by Van der Gouwen after Romeyn de Hooghe, 100 half-page engravings, one vignette and one tailpiece de Hooghe. Amsterdam, Willem de Coup, Willem Lamsvelt, Philip Verbeek, and Joannes Lamsvelt, 1701. 4 parts in 1 volume. Small 4to. With engraved frontispiece by J. Lamsvelt (dated 1701) and 16 plates. Early vellum, new endpapers.

Davidson, 'A Book Collector's Notes', p. 43; not in Landwehr, 'VOC', but see 373 (note on 1701 edition and Vlamingh); Tiele, 'Nederlandsche Bibliographie', p. 111 (1701 edition). Very rare: the "Vlamingh edition" of this fully illustrated account of an imaginary voyage to western Australia, based on the story of the wreck of the VOC ship Vergulde Draeck in 1656.This work was part of a suite of three separately issued works which related to Dutch experiences in Australia. The companion volumes were Willem Vlamingh's exceedingly rare Journaal wegens de Voyagie of 1701, and a second imaginary account of the same region, the tale of the shipwrecked sailor Jacques Sadeur by Gabriel Foigny. At the time of their publishing Vairasse d'Alais, Foigny and Vlamingh were some of the only contemporary works which related to Dutch ambitions in western Australia. Taken as a group, the three works would have been considered an essential introduction to what was known or hypothesised about the Great South Land, and it is certain that the wild imaginings about fabulous lands contributed as much to the enthusiasm for voyages of exploration as the more sober factual accounts. In this sense, the "history" of the Severambes is particularly important, because it is the only one of the three that is illustrated, with marvellous depictions of the imaginary Australian coast. Paper a little fragile, repairs to the fore-edges of 12 pages and 1 plate, some staining; otherwise a good copy.

The Arraignment, Tryal, and Condemnation of Captain William Kidd, for Murther and Piracy, Upon Six several Indictments . who, upon full evidence was found guilty, receiv';d sentence, and was accordingly executed at Execution Dock, May the 23rd

      J. Nutt, London 1701 - (12 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches). 60pp. (Trimmed with minor losses to catchwords and page numbers). Expertly bound to style in half eighteenth century russia over period marbled paper covered boards, flat spine divided into compartments, morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt First edition of the trials of the infamous pirate Captain William Kidd. The transcript of the trial before Parliament covers the three principal charges against Kidd. The first is for the murder of a member of his crew on the ship Adventure off the coast of Malabar in the East-Indies; the second is the trial of Kidd and nine other pirates on charges of piracy and robbery on the ship Quedagh; and the third is on two more indictments of piracy committed on two ships off Calicut. The text transcribes the cross-examinations in their entirety, which gives detailed descriptions of many of Kidd's seizures of ships and booty. Kidd was found guilty of all charges and executed by hanging on 23 May 1701. This official report and trial transcript is of great importance, as many have concluded that Kidd's actions were in fact mere privateering and that it was the trial questioning before Parliament which resulted in his piratical reputation. The complete trial transcript is very rare; a more common abridged version was published in 1703. Howes K120; Sabin 37701. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

      - Testo francese. Pg.(4), 219, (15). Legatura coeva in piena pelle consunta, con dorso a cinque nervature. Taglispruzzati. Ex libris nobiliare all'antiporta. Testo francese. Pg.(4), 219, (15). Legatura coeva in piena pelle consunta, con dorso a cinque nervature. Taglispruzzati. Ex libris nobiliare all'antiporta.
