In excellent condition, with the exception of a printers crease in bottom left section of map. 18 3/16 x 20 5/8 inches. 20 7/8 x 24 9/16 inches. This beautiful map shows the southwest provinces of China, including Hainan and the Pearl River Estuary. The provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and Guangdong are depicted and the principal towns are marked by a dark red dot. DE L'ISLE, Guillaume (1675-1726)
Paris: "chez l'Auteur sur le quai de l'Horloge", 1700 [1718]. Copper- engraved map, period hand-colouring in outline. 21 x 28 1/4 inches. A foundation map of America. "In 1700, Claude and Guillaume De L'Isle [first] published their foundation map of North America. What better way to usher in the eighteenth century cartographically than with this significant and influential map. It encapsulates an era in which the French exemplified a reliance on scientific mapping and beautifully incorporated it into the earlier influence of decorative augmentation" (Burden). Tooley adds: "A foundation map. The Great Lakes based on Coronelli show the French strong points at Tadousac, Quebec, Fort Sorel, Montreal & Fort Frontenac. the English settlements confined to the east of the Alleghenies, with Fort and River Kinibeki as the border between New England and Acadia. The Mississippi valley area is shown well developed with the recent French settlement of d'Iberville at Bilochy and forts at Bon Secours and St. Louis. In this map De l'Isle corrected longitude positions and was the first to revert to a peninsula form of California." Perhaps most significantly, in the second and subsequent states of the map the mouth of the Mississippi is accurately shown for the first time, being the first map to depict information from the surveys of the D'Iberville expedition. This copy Burden's final state, with De L'Isle's address as "Quai de l'Horloge," with Renard's imprint erased and De L'Isle's "Prem.r Geographe du Roy" title added. MORTIER, Pierre (1661-1711)
Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, [circa 1700]. Copper engraved map, engraved by Romein de Hooghe, on two sheets joined, period hand-colouring in outline. Inset plan of Boston Harbor. 25 1/4 x 37 inches. Mortier's map of English America from his famed Neptune François. Although the title suggests this map of English North America to be based on Sanson, it is in fact "drawn directly from Robert Morden's significant New Map of the English Empire in America, c. 1698. The most notable feature here is the mountain range extending from the Florida peninsula northwards into Michigan ... Despite many of the toponyms being translated into French, the map's English origins are clearly seen, including Copper Mine near present day Chicago, and Mines of Iron besides the Ohio River, both originating in the Thevenot, 1681. The unusual depiction of Green Bay, the broader northern portion of the Delaware peninsula, the boundaries of Pennsylvania extending far to the north, the altered Cape Cod and the inset plan of Boston harbour are all features found on the Morden map. Indeed, this is the first printing of a plan of an English colonial city in a non-English map" (Burden). The general title and imprint appears in the upper left corner of this two sheet map; however, a second title (Partie Orientale de l'Amerique Angloise) and imprint appears in the upper right corner, allowing Mortier to use the same map joined, as here, in his Neptune François, or as separate sheets in his Atlas Nouveau. TAUVRY (Daniel).
P.Delaunay. Thomas, Elizabeth
London: 1700: Henry Playford and Abel Roper, Sold By John Nut. Printed: 1700. 1675-1731 Folio, 10.75 x 7.5 inches. First edition. 2 l. unsigned, B-P2, Aa-Ff2. This copy is disbound and housed in a custom made blue buckram phase box with 'Drydeniana' tooled in gilt on the spine. This rare poetical miscellany contains more than fifty poems in English, Latin, and Greek, written by scholars of Oxford and of Cambridge, including established poets such as Robert Gould, and perhaps the first appearance in print by Elizabeth Thomas (page 13-15). Elizabeth Thomas was born in London, the only child of Elizabeth Osborne (d. 1719), aged 16, and lawyer Emmanuel Thomas (d. 1677), aged 60. Her father died when she was an infant and she and her mother faced financial hardship. She was educated at home, was well read, and learnt some French and Latin. As an impoverished gentlewoman, she was dependent on others for patronage, and she was fortunate to be part of an illustrious artistic and literary circle which included Lady Mary Chudleigh, Mary Astell, Judith Drake, Elizabeth Elstob, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, John Norris, and painter Sarah Hoadly, wife of Benjamin Hoadly. She sent Dryden two poems not long before his death, and he responded, "your Verses were, I thought, too good to be a Woman's."[1] He went on to compare her to Katherine Philips, and it was he who gave her her nomme de plume, "Corinna." Her first known publication was an elegy, "To the Memory of the Truly Honoured John Dryden, Esq.," published anonymously in the collection Luctus Britannici (1700). She was engaged for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Februar.
