Dimensioni 550x405. Paolo Petrini, publisher, engraver and book trader, worked in Naples between 1692 and 1748, realizing cartographic and topographic works, very often after Sanson?s and Nicolas de Fer?s prints. His huge production includes hundreds of maps, especially those inspired to the Mercurio Geografico, and is extremely rare. As a matter of fact, this map derives probably from the one realized by De Rossi, who I his turn took inspiration from Sanson. Copper engraving, contemporary colour with touches, in excellent condition. Napoli Naples 550 405

VALK, Gerard (c.1650-1726) & Leonard VALK (1675-1755)
Amsterdam, 1700. Copper-engraved map, full period hand-colouring. Highly decorative map of North and South America showing California as an island and here with full period hand colouring. This decorative map by the Valk brothers is after a similar map by Carol Allard, first published circa 1696. Cartographically, both Allard and the Valks borrow heavily from the De Wit map of 1675, naming the Great Lakes, showing California as an island and with a Terra Esonis and Fretum Anian in the northwest. Interestingly, the Valks here re-issue the first state of Allard's map, i.e. before the re-engraving of the western Great Lakes and the Mississippi River (based on Hennepin's mapping). In addition, the lower left corner of the cartouche is left blank, whereas in subsequent issues of the Allard map, an inset of New Zealand appears. In the present issue, there are no toponyms on Terra Esonis and the South Pacific is without New Guinea. Cf. Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 724 (discussing the map under the entry for Allard); Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast, 496; Tooley, "California as an Island," 68 in Tooley, The Mapping of America ; McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island , 176.

(CHETHAM, J.).
Third Edition. William Battersby. 1700.. pp326, plus five leaves of index including catalogue. Small 8vo. Illustrated, inscription, with some slight foxing mainly to page ends and slight browning mainly to the boards. Contemporary panelled calf on boards, spine calf is 20th century and lighter than boards calf, lacks rear ep., otherwise VG. With two plates, illustrated with pictures of fish. There is a good inscription by Thomas Edlyne Tomlins, Islington, London 1863 on the merits of the book. Tomlins' father (his signature appears here too) wrote a number of books on law, and he himself wrote `Yseldon: A Perambutlation if Islington' 1858. This is a book which seems cannot be found perfect. In particular the plates always seem to be missing or margins damaged with text missing, or pages or title page missing, etc. This copy here lacks the rear end paper only and as such is probably as close to a perfect copy as has been offered on the market for some time. Angling books of the date are almost impossible to obtain. The first edition was 1681, second 1689. CCPS2003 US$0

STEVIN, Simon. [GROTIUS, Hugo].
First Latin edition, very rare, of Stevin's important contribution to the art of maritime position finding by use of the compass and its deviation, published at the same time as the original Dutch edition (<i>De Havenvinding</i>). "In a seafaring nation like the Dutch republic matters of navigation were, of course, of great importance... in a short treatise entitled <i>De Havenvinding</i>, [Stevin] approached the subject of determining the longitude of a ship, a problem that was not fully solved until the nineteenth century. Several previous authors had suggested that longitude might be determined by measuring the deviation of the magnetic needle from the astronomical meridian, a suggestion based on the assumption that the earthwide distribution of terrestrial magnetism was known. Since the determination of latitude was well known, such a measurement would allow the sailor to chart longitudinal position against the latitudinal circle.<br/><br/> "Stevin, in his booklet, gave a clear explanation of this method; he differed from Petrus Plancius and Mercator in that he did not rely upon a priori conceptions of the way in which geomagnetic deviation depends upon geographical position. Although he was willing to offer a conjecture about this dependence, Stevin insisted on the necessity of collecting actual measurements from all possible sources and urged the establishment of an empirical, worldwide survey. His method was sound, although as data began to accumulate it became clear that the magnetic elements were subject to secular variation. The problem was at last solved more sim … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Locke, John]. [Wynne, John]
London: Printed for A. And J. Churchil.. 1700 Second edition. Nineteenth-century blindstamped paneled calf, edges stained red. . Small octavo. Front hinge weak, but holding. A very good copy. "The abridgement was Wynne's own idea and is based on the 2nd and 3rd editions (textually the same). Locke is said to have approved an abridgement in principle. This is one of the very few books dedicated to Locke (curiously)....Rather than rephrasing, Wynne's abridgment was accomplished by making strategic deletions in each chapter, sometimes adding transitional phrases, and keeping to Locke's own words" (Yolton pp 155/6).

Molleri, M. Christiani (Christian Moeller)
Michaelis Gottschalckii (Michael Gottschack), Francofurti ad Oderam (Frankfurt an der Oder), 1700. Octavo. Original full calf. Title page in Yiddish and Latin. Vignette on title page. Decorative head-, tailpieces, and initials. First complete printing of the New Testament in Yiddish. The first effort at a Yiddish translation of the New Testament seems to be that of Johann Harzuge, a convert. His version (Cracow, 1540), which does not include Revelations, follows Luther's German version and is printed in Rashi script. The next attempt at a Yiddish NT (Strassburg, 1592) was that of Elias Schadeus, who translated only five books, also following Luther. Christian Moeller translated all of the NT into Yiddish (this copy). Binding darkened and rubbed along edges. Moderate abrasion on front cover. Bookplate on inside of front cover (London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst The Jews). Free front endpaper inscribed by previous owner, and dated 1819. Sporadic browning throughout. Fly leaf at rear partly chipped. Text in Yiddish. Binding in overall fair, interior in good to good+ condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[ Souverain, Matthieu ]
Cologne: Chez Pierre Marteau, 1700 First edition. Contemporary calf, gilt spine. . Twelvemo. Some wear to upper cover, front joint neatly repaired, spine lettering a bit flaked. A very good copy. From the Macclesfield Library, with their bookplate, and the notation that this was a gift from the publisher ("Ex dono Editoris"). Matthieu Souverain (d. ca. 1699) was a Huguenot who settle in England, and a notorious Socinian. Here, he discusses the doctrine of the Logos in St. John's Gospel. This work attracted considerable attention, and was certainly read by Locke. An English translation appeared in 1700, and a German one in 1782. There is also a modern edition, published by Fayard of Paris, in 2004.
