[ Souverain, Matthieu ]
Cologne: Chez Pierre Marteau, 1700 First edition. Contemporary calf, gilt spine. . Twelvemo. Some wear to upper cover, front joint neatly repaired, spine lettering a bit flaked. A very good copy. From the Macclesfield Library, with their bookplate, and the notation that this was a gift from the publisher ("Ex dono Editoris"). Matthieu Souverain (d. ca. 1699) was a Huguenot who settle in England, and a notorious Socinian. Here, he discusses the doctrine of the Logos in St. John's Gospel. This work attracted considerable attention, and was certainly read by Locke. An English translation appeared in 1700, and a German one in 1782. There is also a modern edition, published by Fayard of Paris, in 2004.

FRANCESCO NEGRI (1632 - 98)
The complete book, 4to, 21,7x16,2cm Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title on spine XXX pp. (first four blank, 1 leaf (imprimatur "Noi Refformatori"), 208 pp., 4 leaves index, 1 engraved portrait of the author and 17 engraved folding plates. Padova 1700 Francesco Negri was an Italian clergyman who travelled in Scandinavia in 1664 - 65 and wrote many letters describing the native people of the North. He was also the first after Olaus Magnus to mention skiing. He first travelled through Sweden to Denmark where he met King Fredrik III, and then along the Norwegian coast from Bergen - Trondheim (including a visit to Østraat and Ove Bjelke) - Bjørnør - Næø - Torghatten - Rødø - Malstrømmen. As the first Italian he reached the North Cape, and in the North Cape Centre there is an exhibition vitrine displaying different scenes from F. Negri's visit. This book and travel account was based on his letters, and published by his heirs after his death. The content can be considered as a "scientific" document because it is intended to confute some legendary and fabulous statements by Olaus Magnus and give the reader a thorough and detailed description of places, people, human types, customs and habits. To accompany the text the book was illustrated with 17 folded plates (a small tear connected to a fold on two plates) from Lapland. The book stands as an important reference work of the North from the 17th/18th century. The book is divided in eight letters but useful information was added to the letters after Negri's return to Italy in 1666. Part one covers Lapland, part five, six … [Click Below for Full Description]

Perrault, C.
Paris, l'Imprimerie du Louvre, 1700. Folio (42.2 x 28.0 cm). Half-title, title page with engraved vignette, 124 pp.; 20 large, finely engraved plates. Contemporary full calf. Spine with six raised bands, compartments with gilt ornaments. Marbled endpapers. Edges speckled red. Perhaps unique copy of this early and influential work on comparative zoology, morphology and anatomy by the French zoologist, Latinist, architect, and founding member of the Académie de Sciences, Claude Perrault (1613-1688). According to a note written below the advice to the binder, this is the 1688 edition, augmented with eight additional plates. Indeed, apart from the animals mentioned in the title (lion, lioness, chameleon, bear, gazelle, leopard, shark, lynx, otter, civet, eland, sea cow (actually a seal), and chamois) there are images of a pangolin, caracal, hog-like animal, two species of stork, spoonbill, ostrich, gazelle, hedgehog and porcupine, the latter two on one plate. Only the gazelle has an additional description, whereas on pp. 119-123 there is an extensive description of the cormoran (cormorant) and on p. 124 a one-page description of the cocq-indien (curassow) which, however, are not figured. There is only one copy mentioned in an antiquarian catalogue during the last 40 years, and one copy in a French library, however, with 12 plates and 118 pages only. Brunet states that the 1688 edition has four, not eight, additional plates and 124 text pages, and the 1700 title edition had only 16 plates and 118 text pages, that is: the same as the one copy on record in a French library. Locke John
Schelte Henri, 1700. [Click Below for Full Description]

GARTH, SAMUEL, Sir
printed and sold by John Nutt, 1700. 8vo, pp. [22], 96; contemporary full paneled calf, maroon morocco label on gilt-paneled spine, neatly rebacked; minor wear; good and sound, or better. With the engraved bookplate of Viscount Sydney, i.e. Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney (1733 - 1800), a British politician who held several important Cabinet posts in the second half of the 18th century whose most enduring legacy is that the cities of Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada, and Sydney in New South Wales, Australia are named in his honour, in 1785 and 1788 respectively. Garth (1661-1719) was both a physician and a poet, and a fellow of the College of Physicians. On the last page of the Harveian oration at the College of Physicians, Garth "alludes to a scheme, which had been discussed in the college from 1687, for establishing a dispensary where poor people could obtain advice and prescriptions from the best physicians. While a large majority of the fellows of the college supported this scheme, a minority allied themselves with the apothecaries of the city, who tried to defeat the plan, chiefly by charging exorbitant prices for the drugs prescribed. In 1699 Garth published ëThe Dispensary, a Poem,í which is a record of the first attempt to establish those out-patient rooms now universal in the large towns of England. ëThe Dispensaryí ridicules the apothecaries and their allies among the fellows. It was circulated in manuscript, and in a few weeks was printed and sold by John Nutt, near Stationers' Hall. A second and a third edition appeared in the same year, to which were added a … [Click Below for Full Description]

The author, Charles Pajot (or Paiot, 1609-1686), was a Jesuit who published a Latin-French thesaurus in 1636, which was later expanded and developed and reprinted more than 10 times. The first trilingual edition, adding Greek, was in 1645, but we have located no copies of this later edition in COPAC or Worldcat, and only a handful of copies of earlier editions outside France, including a 1696 in Illinois (Loyola), and editions of 1679 and 1680 in Canada.

LARMESSIN II, Nicolas de
1700. LARMESSIN II, Nicolas de. [Les Costumes grotesques et les métiers. Suite of Fanciful Costumes]. Comprised of 38 full-page engraved images set within borders, average image size: 270 x 190 mm (10 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches). Folio, 435 x 310 mm, bound in recent half French red morocco, gilt spine, marbled paper over boards. [Paris: ca. 1700]. |~||~||~||~||~| Very rare suite of this famous French seventeenth-century "Fancy Trade Costumes." Each plate is composed of a stylized character, usually itinerant workers, merchants or street vendors, in the manner of Arcimboldo. The figure is portrayed in the accoutrement of his particular trade or occupation, with the clothing, hats, etc. constructed out of the tools from his/her trade. For example, the gardener (Jardinier) has a floral and fruit composition for a hat, clay flower pots for forearms, fruits and/or flowers for legs, with hoes, rakes and a scythe over one shoulder and a watering can in the other hand; the clock maker/seller (d'orlogeur) is composed of an elegant Sevres-style clock as his chest, with chiming bells as a hat, wrist watches dangling from each arm and leg, and clock keys and winding devices hanging from his belt. There is a surrealistic quality to the figures as if they appear dressed to attend a Costume Ball at the Court of Louis XIV. Each character seems far removed from the grime of the work-place. It is often difficult to identify the individual accoutrements in the costumes of each figure. Although they would certainly have been commonplace objects of each trade in the seventeenth century, they now abide … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau
A detailed Hand-colored stipple engraving by Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-82) From his sweeping book Traite des Arbres Fruitiers Nouvelle edition by Pierre Jean Francois Turpin and Pierre-Antoine Poiteau which was published in Paris in 1807-35. Overall this print measures 10.5"x17”. This piece has no restoration and full margins. One of the most splendid books on fruit ever produced, Traite des Arbres Fruitiers was the result of the collaboration of two life-long friends, Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840) and Pierre-Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854). The son of a poor artisan, Turpin was largely self-taught but had studied the basic elements of drawing in the art school of his hometown, Vire. At 19, after entering the military five years prior, Turpin was sent to San Domingo in the West Indies where he met the young botanist, and student of the great botanist Pierre-Antoine Poiteau, whom was a student of the great botanical artist Pierre Joseph Redoute. This inspired in Turpin an enthusiasm for natural history. Both Turpin and Poiteau were outstanding botanical artists of the “Redoute” style, and utilized the same techniques of hand-colored stipple engraving that Redoute had devised. The plates were printed by Langlois, a great master of printing who had supervised much of Redoute’s work. Poiteau wrote all of the text to accompany the illustrations. The work covers almonds, peaches and nectarines, apricots and greengages, plums, grapes, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries, currants, pears (over 100 varieties), apples, hazelnuts, walnuts, … [Click Below for Full Description]

JAILLOT, Alexis Hubert.
Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier., c. 1700. Size: 525 x 635 mm. Copperplate engraving with original outline colour. Slight water staining to lower border, minor toning and soiling, otherwise in very good condition An extremely attractive and decorative map of The English Channel, showing the entire south coast of England and the north western regions of France - from Nantes to Bruges. The map is littered with compass roses and rhumb lines, and features a large and very ornate title cartouche in the lower right corner, with horses, cherubs, soldiers and King Neptune seated in his chariot. There is plenty of detail within the body of the map, especially along coastal areas. A very fine map indeed.

Valk, Gerard
Amsterdam: , C1700. Copper engraved, double page, map, hand colored, cartouche uncolored, 49 x 59 cm (19 1/2" x 23"). Some minor soiling and aging; otherwise very good and quite colorful. Valk (1651-1726) was born in Amsterdam, and was also known as Valck. He was a fairly well known engraver and publisher, and would eventually go into partnership with Peter Schenk (1655-1718), and would produce an atlas and maps together. In fact, it seems they brought the property of the Blaeu firm, which gave them material for their maps. This is a very attractive map of Britain, and includes an inset of Orkney, Shetland and Faro islands. The map also contains a large cartouche that depicts angels and Poseidon. Bagrow p. 276.
