Knab, Johann Philipp
Sprendlingen, Germany. 1700. Hardcover. Good. Large blind embossed vellum bound Church Gradual (34 x 21 cm; 13.25 x 8.25 inches), 508 numbered pages, with p. 499 bearing the following information: 'Dis buch ist geschrieben worden durch JOANNES PHILIPPI KNAB, der zet-Catholischer Schulmeister in Sprendlingen im jahr 1700..." Condition good to very good, clasps to binding lacking, edgewear, some recent vellum repairs to spine, contents also good to very good, well thumbed and general light edgewear to pages, multiple occasional very short tears and a few slightly longer tears, but in general very good. An amazing gradual with music and Latin text, composed in red and black inks and with many decorations, embellishments and rubrications in German folk- art motifs that recall the decorative arts of the Pennsylvania Dutch. Sprendlingen is a short distance SW of Frankfurt and NW of Mannheim. We could not find out much regarding Knab, but his name appears in 1716 as pastor of St. Michael's and Vitus Church in Heiligenstadt in upper Franconia, and there is mention of a Knab of the same name and time associated with the towns of Coburg and Mengersdorf. A beautiful and unique work. Housed in handsome green cloth clamshell box.

Light toning to text, foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. * Second and final edition. A notable statement of Whig principles from a clerical perspective, this declaration of clerical independence is a rebuttal of the Royalist position of a 1697 book-length essay by William Wake [1657-1737], then dean of Exeter, later Archbishop of Canterbury. Atterbury charged Wake with the submission of the church liberties to the arbitrary will of a sovereign. It was first published in 1697 as A Letter to a Convocation-Man, Concerning the Rights, Powers, And Priviledges of that Body. Both editions are scarce. Anon (Daniel Defoe)
London, 1700 Book. Good. Hardcover. An extremely scarceessay responding to writer Daniel Defoe's political pamphlet concerning the events leading up to the War of Spanish Succession. Daniel Defoe (16591661-1731), born Daniel Foe, was an English trader, writer, journalist, and pamphleteer, who gained fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularise the form in Britain and along with others such as Richardson, is among the founders of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than 500 books, pamphlets and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He was also a pioneer of economic journalism. Defoe's first notable publication was An Essay upon Projects, a series of proposals for social and economic improvement, published in 1697. From 1697 to 1698 he defended the right of King William III to a standing army during disarmament after the Treaty of Ryswick (1697) had ended the Nine Years' War (168897). When Charles II died in 1700, the line of the Spanish Habsburgs died with him. He had named as his successor a grand-nephew, Philip, Duke of Anjou (a grandson of the reigning French king Louis XIV, and of Charles' half-sister, Maria Theresa of SpainLouis XIV himself was an heir to the Spanish throne through his mother, daughter of Philip III of Spain). As alternate successor he had named his blood cousin Charles. The spectre of the multi-continental empire of Spain passing under the effective control of Loui … [Click Below for Full Description]

WELLS, Edward (1667-1727)
London: [circa 1700]. Copper-engraved map. 17 x 22 3/4 inches. First state of a noted English map of North America, with a large depiction of California as an island. The map is dedicated to His Highness William Duke of Gloucester, with his coat of arms in the title cartouche. It was drawn and engraved by Michael Burghers, the official engraver of the University of Oxford, and appeared in editions of Wells atlas, titled A New Sett of Maps both Ancient and Present Geography. The general outline of North America generally follows Hennepin's depictions, with the discoveries in the Mississippi valley attributed to him on the map, but with other sources as well. English settlements are located along the eastern seaboard and a new French settlement is identified near the mouth of the Mississippi (i.e. d'Iberville's colony at Biloxi founded in 1699). In the interior, the Ohio River (named Hotico R.) is shown flowing through a mountain range, named the Apalachin M., but which run east-west in an arc that encloses the Spanish possessions of Florida. The Great Lakes are shown rather distorted, a large mythical lake still appears in Carolina and, as expected, the northwest coast is largely unmapped. Burden identifies four states of the map, printed between 1700 (though with some evidence to suggest that the first state was completed in 1699) and circa 1743; the present example is the first state, without a plate number below the cartouche, with the Great Lakes unnamed and prior to the addition of Georgia. Van Keulen, Johannes
Rare sea chart of Brazil and the African Coast. c.1700. Amsterdam. Fine colour, some spotting and minor foxing, generally in excellent condition with unusual wide margins. An important sea chart of the coasts of Brazil and Africa; embellished with a large cartouche, ships sailing and a compass rose. This chart shows the entire Brazilian coastline, with profuse detail of the towns and cities inhabiting the shores (often imaginary). Van Keulen (1654 ? 1715) was an influential Dutch 17th century cartographer and mapmaker, his atlases, the Zee Atlas and Zee-Fakkel, intended as aid for navigators, are amongst the best cartographic productions of the end of the 17th century. He began his activities as printer in 1678 in Amsterdam; shortly thereafter he obtained his license for printing, employing Jan Luyken and Claes Vooght (famed mathematician) amongst others. Although not the rarest, his most monumental production was the De Nieuwe Groote Lichtende Zee-Fakkel, where these maps were included; the Zee-Fakkel was published in several editions, its contents spanned the whole world. Remarkably, the part dedicated to Brazil was particularly rich, which probably accounts for the Dutch interest in the region. The family and successors of Johannes continued the business well into the 18th century.

[Ethiopian Orthodox (Coptic) Church]
1700. [Ethiopia]: n.p., [18th-early 20th century] . Sewn Binding. Very Good. 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Written in Ge'ez in red and black ink. Five full page hand painted illustrations depicting the Madonna and Child (Mary and Jesus), St. George and the Dragon, the Crucifixion, and two depictions of the risen Christ, followed by 44 vellum leaves bound in five gatherings of eight leaves and a final gathering of four leaves. The last two leaves are blank, allowing the owner to make additions as desired. Varying signs of age (such as light staining an fading) to the vellum text pages as is normal. Bound in bare wooden boards in the distinctive Coptic style with exposed spine. A very good Coptic codex written in the Ethiopic (Ge'ez) script, a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but which is still used for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The subjects of these codices are generally always Christian, but the actual content varies. Dating Ethiopian manuscripts is difficult. The text is believed to date from as early as 1700 to as late as 1850, with the covers, stitching, and hand paintings added later, likely during the first part of the 20th Century. The majority of the text consists of incantations to protect the owner from supernatural forces.

Title within ruled border. 8 p.l., 160, 15 pp. 8vo, cont. speckled calf (very carefully rebacked with the orig. spine laid-down, one corner a bit worn, faint dampstaining towards end), spine gilt. London: "Printed in the Year 1700." First edition and a lovely copy of a scarce book. "Published to encourage public investment in Sir Carbery Price's silver, copper, and lead mines and smelting works in Wales, which Sir Humphrey Mackworth (1657-1727) bought when Price died (1695). Considered so rich and abundant in high-grade ores, these mines were called the 'Welsh Potosi' after the silver mines in Bolivia. Mackworth formed the Corporation of the Governor and Company of the Mine Adventurers of England. Written in the form of a dialogue between 'Two Noble Lords, a Learned Doctor of Divinity, and an Eminent Merchant of London,' this work makes a very good case for investing substantial sums of money in these unusually productive mines. Thomas Savery's (1650?-1715) engine for pumping mine water by means of steam power (1698) is described (p. 50) as 'a very ingenious Invention.' In addition to its metallurgical and mineralogical interest, there are discussions of ore smelting, chemical analyses, etc."-Neville, II, p. 469. Fine copy. Mortier, Pierre:
Amsterdam: P. Mortier, [1700].. Copper-engraved map, with full original color. Sheet size: 23 3/4 x 19 1/2 inches. Very good. A fine copy of the first map of the Carolinas to be printed outside of England, including an inset of Charleston with the names and positions of early plantations along the Ashley and Cooper rivers, present here in the first state. This map was included as part of Pierre Mortier's SUITE DE NEPTUNE FRANÇOIS, published in Amsterdam in 1700, and often incorrectly attributed to Nicolas Sanson. It is directly derived from the extremely rare A NEW MAP OF CAROLINA of 1685 by John Thornton, Robert Morden, and Philip Lea. All topographical details are identical to those of its antecedent; however, most of the place names have been Gallicized. Also, "The table of settlers" has been omitted in favor of the title caption. Amusingly, a "Charle Ville ou Charles Towne" appears written in large letters near Cape Fear, while the actual Charles Towne is labeled in small letters further down the coast. The present map includes an inset detail of Charleston and the Cooper and Ashley rivers, with the names and positions of various early plantations marked along their banks. "Carolina was established in 1663 when Charles II granted the province to eight favorites, known as the Lord Proprietors, who had helped him regain the throne of England. The original grant included the territory between the 31st degree to 36 1/2 degrees north latitude, from Jekyll Island, Georgia, to Curritiuck Inlet, North Carolina. Two years later, the tract was enlarged to include the land bet … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam, c. 1700. Copper engraving, 50 x 58 cms, original hand-colour, closed split at foot of centrefold, blank verso. Danckerts' map of Africa follows Frederick de Wit's model, and it is a typical late seventeenth-century European perception of the continent: good coastal detail together with a great deal of speculation about the interior, including the mythical twin lakes of Zaire and Zaflan, and the mythical Saharan branch of the Nile. London: Printed for A. And J. Churchil.. 1700 Second edition. Nineteenth-century blindstamped paneled calf, edges stained red. . Small octavo. Front hinge weak, but holding. A very good copy. "The abridgement was Wynne's own idea and is based on the 2nd and 3rd editions (textually the same). Locke is said to have approved an abridgement in principle. This is one of the very few books dedicated to Locke (curiously)....Rather than rephrasing, Wynne's abridgment was accomplished by making strategic deletions in each chapter, sometimes adding transitional phrases, and keeping to Locke's own words" (Yolton pp 155/6).
