JANSSON, Jan.
1700 - Amsterdam, G. Valk and P. Schenk, c.1700. Coloured. 385 x 495mm. Most of Valk and Schenk's output of maps were reissues of Jansson's plates, with the only differences being the addition of their names. This, however, is a new plate, although a very close copy of one of Jansson's most important maps, 'Indiae Orientalis Nova Descriptio' (first published 1630), but with a new title and about 1cm shorter and narrower. The original was one of the first to show evidence of the route taken by the Duyfken, the ship that discovered Australia, beating the secrecy order that the Dutch East India company had placed over Blaeu (their official cartographer). Beneath New Guinea 'Duyfkens Eyland' is marked. Schilder writes 'Janssonius’ source must have been either the original map of the Duyfken or the map of the Pacific by Hessel Gerritz. These three items are the only Dutch cartographical sources of the Dufken’s Voyage'. See SCHILDER: Map 24 & CLANCY: 73, Map 6.6, for Jansson's original.

MONNOYER], Jean Baptiste (1636-1699)
[Paris]: N. De Poilly, 1700. Etching and engraving, coloured by hand, by J. Baptiste Monnoyer. Expertly executed repairs to both bottom corners. A delightful composition from one of the great early figures in French botanical art: the strong lines of the vase contrasting with the apparently informal arrangment of the flowers. A beautiful image with the arrangment of flowers including galdioli, tulips, anemones, a poppy, an auricula and a spray of apple blossom, the vase is decorated with a classical baccanalian scene: the dancing satyr and nymph emphasizing the strong sense of movement and life in the composition. Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer set a style of decorative flower painting for the adornment of great French residences including Versailles. Born in Lille in 1636, he began his artistic career in Anvers as a student of Davidsz de Heem. Briefly painting historical scenes, Monnoyer quickly turned to the painting of flowers and fruit for which he is most famous. In 1655 he moved to Paris where he found favor amongst the French aristocracy and was employed to paint murals in many of the Royal chateaux including Vincennes, Saint Cloud, Versailles, le Grand Trianon and Marly. While in France, Monnoyer drew cartoons for tapestries for Gobelins and also engraved several prints of vases of flowers. He became a member of the Academy in 1663. In 1685 Monnoyer accepted an invitation given by the English Ambassador to France, Lord Montague, to decorate Montague House. While in London he also worked for Marie II and Queen Anne at Kensington House. Monnoyer died in London … [Click Below for Full Description]

LE PAUTRE, JEAN.
1700. Paris, F. Poilly, n.d. (circa 1700). Folio. Suite of 6 engraved plates. Untrimmed leaves. (c. 35 x 26 cm).First leaf (title) with smoothed crease and slightly dusty. Loose in recent marbled portfolio. A fine set. Suite of richly decorated vases and jugs, with staffage, partly with landscapes in the background. Jean le Pautre (1618-1682), elder brother of the architect Antoine, began his career as an apprentice to the 'menusier' Adam Philippon, for whom he produced ornamental designs. His first plates illustrate the baptism of Louis XIV on 21 April 1643. Le Pautre is considered to be one of the most inventive and prolific ornamental draftsmen of all time. He was capable of producing designs for any subject. His remarkable technical abilities enabled him later in his career to develop his designs directly as he engraved them. Le Pautre's importance is vast. He established a character of grandeur and inimitable richness that transformed the heavy, soft forms of Flemish ornamentation, which represent the style Louis XIII, into the style Louis XIV. All Europe followed his influence until the end of the eighteenth century. Masters recommended the study of Le Pautre's designs to their students, and his prints of architectural ornament would become standard models for all artists working in the style Louis XIV. [c.f. Ornamentst. Kat. Berlin # 313; on Le Pautre see Millard, French, pp. 293 - 294].

Hoboken Vol. 16, 55. Pincherle p. 209. BUC p. 220. RISM C3801 (two copies only of this issue in the U.S.). The first six sonatas are "church" sonatas, while the second six (with a separate title) are "chamber" sonatas, the last of which is actually the Follia, one of the most renowned compositions of Baroque string literature.
