A. and J. Churchill, London 1700 - This volume is bound in full calf covered boards with some remnants of floral gilt tooling on spine, also red morocco title block. An interesting work on ancient history illustrated with three folding maps (Asiae veteribus cognitae tabula, Antient Sicele, Antient Greece), . Contains prelims [28], 797, [32] index (with some mis-pagination). Ex-libris John Cantor wealthy London timber merchant and developer, his bookplate inside front board. MORDEN, Robert and LEA, Philip
London,: Sold by Philip Lea at the Atlas & Hercules in Cheapside and by Christopher Browne at the Globe the west end of St. Paul&#146, 1700. London,: Sold by Philip Lea at the Atlas & Hercules in Cheapside and by Christopher Browne at the Globe the west end of St. Paul's,, 1700.. is Humbly Dedicated to Ye Ld Mayor & Court of Aldermen. By Ro. Morden, Phil. Lea, Chr. Browne. Engraved plan on two sheets joined, extending north to south from St Pancras to Southwark, and from west to east from Arlington House (Buckingham Palace) to Stepney, a few old folds reinforced, a few tears skilfully repaired, and some minor dampstaining to banner. The most important public buildings are shown in elevation. Amongst them are some notable lost palaces, including Arlington House, on the present day site of Buckingham Palace. The house, built in 1675, was the residence of Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington. The freehold for the property would be sold to the Duke of Buckingham in 1702. Another palace of note is Montague House, home of the 1st Duke of Montague. It was situated on Great Russell Street, which at the time backed on to fields, and in 1759 was sold to the Trustees of the British Museum. The house would be demolished in the 1840s to make way for the modern day building. A great deal of the outlying area of the map is a patchwork of fields dotted with hamlets, such as Marylebone, St Pancras, and Cambridge Heath. Below the plan are tables giving names of the public offices, wards, and parishes; which before the Fire numbered 97 but only 62 after. There is also information on the halls … [Click Below for Full Description]

JANSSON, Jan.
1700 - Amsterdam, G. Valk and P. Schenk, c.1700. Coloured. 385 x 495mm. Most of Valk and Schenk's output of maps were reissues of Jansson's plates, with the only differences being the addition of their names. This, however, is a new plate, although a very close copy of one of Jansson's most important maps, 'Indiae Orientalis Nova Descriptio' (first published 1630), but with a new title and about 1cm shorter and narrower. The original was one of the first to show evidence of the route taken by the Duyfken, the ship that discovered Australia, beating the secrecy order that the Dutch East India company had placed over Blaeu (their official cartographer). Beneath New Guinea 'Duyfkens Eyland' is marked. Schilder writes 'Janssonius’ source must have been either the original map of the Duyfken or the map of the Pacific by Hessel Gerritz. These three items are the only Dutch cartographical sources of the Dufken’s Voyage'. See SCHILDER: Map 24 & CLANCY: 73, Map 6.6, for Jansson's original.
