[VIEW - MALTA]. RADEMAKER, [Gerard?].
Beautiful and detailed watercolour drawing, drawn in brown ink with grey and brown washes. The fortifications are rendered in a very careful and detailed way. The view is probably drawn from the peninsula Floriana, part of the city of Valetta, with the fortification Manoel at left and the fortification Tigné in the centre, both with the flags of the Order of the Knights of St. John flying on the towers and ships in full sail leaving the harbour for the open sea. Above the border at the centre is written "Malta".Cut down to the border (except for a tab left at the top for the title), but in fine condition, with only a couple small spots in the sky.

PÉCOUR, Louis 1653-1729
Paris, 1700. Credited with 120 original choreographies, most for the theatre but many for social dancing, "[Pcour] was one of the finest dancers working under the celebrated royal choreographer Pierre Beauchamp. He is said in one source to have made his dbut as a dancer in a repeat performance of Lully's Cadmus et Hermione in 1674. When, on Lully's death in 1687, Beauchamp left the Opra, Pcour was appointed in his place. He gave up dancing in about 1703 but he held the post of ballet-master and choreographer at the Opra until his death. His tutelage produced such outstanding dancers as La Fontaine, Subligny, Guiot, Prevost and Menese among the women and Blondy, Ballon, Dumoulin and Marcel among the men. He is credited with changing the 'S' figure of the Minuet to a 'Z', an innovation that helped keep the dancers in a proper relationship to each other and to the figure." Meredith Ellis Little in Grove Music Online.. Pcour is depicted seated at a table with an open book of dances in Feuillet notation. 417 x 294 mm. Slightly worn and soiled; minor creasing to area with letters below image; trimmed to plate mark.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

HALIFAX, [George Savile], Marquis of
London: Printed for Matt. Gillyflower 1700. . First collected edition, 8vo, (ii), 21, (1), 84, (vi), 97, (1), 42, (ii), 30, 16, (ii), 44, (ii), 21, (1, ii), 6, (4) pp. Frontispiece, one leaf with a closed tear and slight loss the outer margin, not affecting text, some browning, 2 ink stamps to title, contemporary inscription to fly leaf, paste downs taken from a contemporary theological work, later small Library label to front paste down. Contemporary panelled calf, blind triple rules and corner decorations, some light wear, neatly rebacked. An advisor to three Kings in his lifetime, Halifax was involved in many of the momentous events that affected England in the second half of the eighteenth century. Elevated to the peerage and sent on a diplomatic mission to France by Charles II, he was made Lord Privy Seal under William III. Two different tracts, both entitled “A Letter to a Dissenter”, are present. The second, “...from his Friend at the Hague...”, 16 pp, collates as part of the original volume but is by Daniel Defoe, while Halifax’s own piece under the same title, 30 pp, has been inserted. Moore’s Checklist of the Writings of Daniel Defoe, 5, notes this confusion. The “Funeral Poem” to Halifax’s memory at the beginning of the volume is by the playwright Elkanah Settle. Wing H315.

LOCKE, John
London; Awnsham and John Churchil at The Black Swan. 1700, 1700. Fourth Edition. 4to. Bound in recent full panelled calf with red title label. Very handsome. Internally uniformally toned throughout, with neat marginal notes in what appears to be some sort of shorthand. Perhaps a little tired internally but nevertheless a respectable and durable copy. Marginal wear to frontispiece and prelims. The penultimate lifetime edition with additions and revisions by Locke, a new chapter on the association of ideas and a chapter on Enthusiasm appear here for the first time. Often regarded as the birthplace of experimental psychology, this is an important and influential work in an attractive modern binding.

LAW. Texts.]
1700. 4° (21.5 x 15 cm.), early nineteenth-century half sheep over marbled boards (some wear, a few pin-point wormholes), smooth spine with gilt fillets, crimson leather lettering-piece. Written in ink, in a small, tidy, legible hand. A few quires lightly browned. Overall in very good to fine condition. Includes one leaf of "papel selado" (10 reis, stamped in black, undated; p. 61). Early manuscript pagination. 151 pp. plus a slip inserted after p. 24. *** Translations of the German sections in a 760-page legal tome whose title is not given. It was probably a work such as Justus Henning Böhmer's Doctrina de actionibus ad praxin hodiernam et novissimam ordinationem ., published in the early 1700s; it ran well over 700 pages and went through at least 6 editions. The work of German jurists during the eighteenth century liberated law from the influence of Roman law and was influential throughout Europe. We suspect this manuscript was done by a law student for his personal use.*** [Attributes: Hard Cover]
