[DUTCH-GILT PAPER]
[Germany?, mid-18th century]. Oblong broadsheet (360 x 420 mm.), pale yellow laid paper, printed and embossed in gold (image area 320 x 385 mm.) showing eight oval male and female profile busts in two horizontal rows, each male-female pair showing a different style of coiffure, each bust labeled either à la Moderne (the couples at upper left and lower right) or à l?'Antieque [sic] (those at upper right and lower left), the cartouches set within wreaths and surrounded by roses, floral swags, and ribbons. Untrimmed.*** An unrecorded and unusual figurative example of Buntpapier or Brokatpapier. Known in English as Dutch-gilt paper, these papers, printed from woodblocks, metal plates or by engraved rollers, ?"were used from about 1700, and ... were actually produced in Germany and Italy, the Dutch connection possibly arising from the fact that the papers were imported into Holland for reexport to France and England, although not all of them arrived in France and England by that route. A great variety of designs was employed in these papers, many being in imitation of the brocades and damasks of the period. Some have figures of huntsmen, animals and birds, saints, mythological beasts, and Renaissance strap and scroll patterns; many are embossed, and some are printed on colored paper. The probable method of their execution consisted of transferring gold size to the paper by means of wooden plates or engraved rollers, the former first being pressed onto a pad saturated with the size, the latter having the size painted on. When the size on the paper had dried to the correct state, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schenk, Petri & Valk Gerardi
Africa: Amsterdam Schenk, Petri & Valk Gerardi c1700. Copper engraved map of Guinea, West Africa after Janssonius from Schenk and Valk's " Atlas Contractus." Original full wash colour; verso blank. The map after Jansonnius shows the coast of West Africa from Sierra Leone to Gabon, focused upon Guinea and Benin; numerous elephants, lions and monkeys within the land; ships, monsters and compass roses to sea. Decorative title cartouche surmounted by natives and monkeys; 2 black putti bear an elephant tusk above the sea at bottom left corner. Good impression with bright colour; worm track to upper centre fold in blank margin with old paper repair to verso, not entering image. The maps of Schenk and Valk are famous for their full wash colour , however often the pigments, particularly in the greens deteriorated leading to browning and eventually could cause the paper to crack, for this reason it is unusual to see such bright original colour. SCHENCK, Pieter 1660-1718/9 Dutch mapmaker and publisher. Born in Elberfeld, Germany in 1660. Moved to Amsterdam in 1683 where he became a pupil of Gerard Valck, later in 1687 he married Agatha Valck, sister of his associate., thus uniting two great families. In 1686 he is noted in a privilege granted to Petrus Schenck and Gerardus Valck for the printing & sale of their prints. The Valck and Schenk families where active as print sellers, publishers and printers of maps, atlases and architectural drawings as well globes. Homann, Johann Baptist
Asia & Australasia: Nuremberg Homann, Johann Baptist c1720. Copper engraved map of the continent of Asia by Johann Bapt. Homann from his "Grosser Atlas" . Original colour, verso blank. Decorative title cartouche and vignette showing a potentate being paid homage, with a leopard and a lion. Descriptive text without cartouche to upper right. Early example of Homann's first map of Asia, it includes the northern tip of Australia (Nova Hollandia) Carpentaria, Nova Britannia and the Marianas. Hokkaido is identified as Terra Yedso and the fictional Compagnie Land, to the northeast of Japan. Dampier's passage is shown stretching between New Guinea and New Britain and marks his discovery of New Britain in 1700. Dark impression; cartouche black & white as issued Johann Baptist Homann (1664 ?" 1724) from 1687 Homann worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house. Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schenk, Petri & Valk Gerardi
Africa: Amsterdam Schenk, Petri & Valk Gerardi c1700. Copper engraved map of East Africa Æthiopia from Schenk and Valk's " Atlas Contractus." Original full wash colour; verso blank. The map shows a major section of central and eastern Africa including Mozambique north to present day Sudan The map contains numerous coastal place names such as Mozambique Island, Quiloa, Mombaza, and Melinde indicating the importance of the area to both Arab, Portuguese, and traders and explorers from other countries. Congo is shown on the west coast and the two lakes of Zaire and Zaflan described by Ptolomy are in the lower portion of the map. Lake Niger, and the supposed course of the Niger River, is shown flowing westward. This map is based on Ortelius' map of Prester John of 1573. Decorative title cartouche, black and white as issued; elephants, ostriches and monkeys within the land. The legends of Prester John (also Presbyter Johannes) were popular in Europe from the 12th through the 17th centuries, and told of a Christian patriarch and king said to rule over a Christian nation lost amidst the Muslims and pagans in the Orient. Written accounts of this kingdom are variegated collections of medieval popular fantasy. Prester John was reportedly a descendant of one of the Three Magi, said to be a generous ruler and a virtuous man, presiding over a realm full of riches and strange creatures, in which the Patriarch of the Saint Thomas Christians resided. His kingdom contained such marvels as the Gates of Alexander and the Fountain of Youth, and even bordered the Earthly Paradise. Among his … [Click Below for Full Description]

MODESTO, A. R. P. A MTE
circa. 1700.. [Manuscript]. 1/2 Vellum. Very Good. 4to (24 x 17 cm). Half vellum on marble boards. 92 numered pages (duplicates of page no., 74 and 75, as Addendum to the Arithmetic section.) All pages are in Latin script with 3 in text tables, 3 folding tables at end and 4 folding plates containing 18 figures. The figures have red wash for shading. The title page is in red and black ink. The text is written in a fine legible hand. The title translates loosely as "Elementary Mathematics - An improved and carefully arranged course for intense study and delivery to students." (Loose translation) The text is divided into sections on Arithmetic and Geometry. Each section has an introduction, history, presentation, object, and divisions. These paragraphs are followed either by propositions (Arithmetic section) or Addenda on separate topics, such as conics, parabola, etc. (Geometric section). The Arithmetic section is longest with 74 p. plus 2 addenda pages. The detail information in the Geometry sections leads to practical problem solving for surveying. We could find no record of publication or for the author of this manuscript. We have not found any published reference for this work. This is an original work used in teaching students, most likely at a Capuchin monastery in the 17th and early 18th centuries. This is a very scarce and fine example of early teaching of two major branches of mathematics, Arithmetic and Geometry.

The last part of the manuscript discusses and illustrates the use of portable and curious types of dials that could by use when making observations sun off surfaces, separate dials for use with moon, or stars. The use of two hands as a dial for determining time is also covered in a separate section. This is a rare and thorough treatise for dialing with little evidence of author. No reference to the title could be found checking numerous reference sources. The date of 1700 on the title pages for each section may be accurate. However, the printed geographical tables for longitude and latitude inserted as part of the first section have a date of 1716.
