PÉCOUR, Louis 1653-1729
Paris: [ca. 1700]. Pécour is depicted seated at a table with an open book of dances in Feuillet notation. 417 x 294 mm. Slightly worn and soiled; minor creasing to area with letters below image; trimmed to just within plate mark. Laid down to backing paper. Credited with 120 original choreographies, most for the theatre but many for social dancing, "[Pécour] was one of the finest dancers working under the celebrated royal choreographer Pierre Beauchamp. He is said in one source to have made his début as a dancer in a repeat performance of Lully's Cadmus et Hermione in 1674. When, on Lully's death in 1687, Beauchamp left the Opéra, Pécour was appointed in his place. He gave up dancing in about 1703 but he held the post of ballet-master and choreographer at the Opéra until his death. His tutelage produced such outstanding dancers as La Fontaine, Subligny, Guiot, Prevost and Menese among the women and Blondy, Ballon, Dumoulin and Marcel among the men. He is credited with changing the 'S' figure of the Minuet to a 'Z', an innovation that helped keep the dancers in a proper relationship to each other and to the figure." Meredith Ellis Little in Grove Music Online. Item #23413.

INSELIN (Charles).
[Click Below for Full Description]

Paolo PETRINI (Attivo a Napoli fine del XVIII secolo)
Little is known of Paolo Petrini, the Neapolitan mapmaker. He is known to have published the rare Atlante partenopeo (1700-1718), and this equally rare set of wall-maps. Much of his work appears to have been based on contemporary French mapping, notably the works of the Sanson family and Nicolas de Fer. That he was not merely a copyist, however, may be seen from his map of … [Click Below for Full Description]

The title page for the first part is dated 1700, the title page for the second part and the Hawkins dedication are dated 1760, so it seems to be the 1760 edition. the book is clean, tight, square and unmarked with contemporary spine covering of tan calf with five raised bands and bright gilt titles. The boards appear to be the original in brown leather and brass clasps at the fore edge. They have been rubbed to rounding at the corners. The front paste down has the name of John Bell Thirsk. The first part has 302 clear pages with occasional toning and some minor damp stain in the upper corner spine for a dozen or so page near the end. The second part has 128 pages plus an index. The frontispiece of part 2 is a plate of Cotton. Both parts are illustrated with black & white plates. The spine covering has been replaced making this a very handsome book. As this book is from the library of American Impressionist J. Alden Weir, the father of Caroline Weir (Caro Weir Ely), artist, print maker, book binder, there is a chance it was she who did this work.

PÉCOUR, Louis 1653-1729
Paris: [ca. 1700]. Pécour is depicted seated at a table with an open book of dances in Feuillet notation. 419 x 294 mm. to platemark. Slightly browned, most noticeably to mount; minor remnants of tape to verso. In very good condition overall. He is credited with changing the 'S' figure of the Minuet to a 'Z', an innovation that helped keep the dancers in a proper relationship to each other and to the figure." CATS, Jacob.
Museum Catsianum 8. Eighth edition of the "complete" works of Jacob Cats, one of the greatest poets and humourists of the Dutch golden age and one of its greatest statesmen. This collected edition contains all his most famous works, including Sinne- en minnebeelden, Self-stryt, all six parts of Houwelick, all three parts of Trou-ringh and many others. Cats's poetry lent itself to illustration, and the illustrations form an integral part of his emblematic works. He must have worked closely with Adriaan van de Venne, one of the best artists of his day, who executed the drawings for most of the hundreds of engravings in this edition, and they were produced by the best engravers of his day. One of the double-page plates shows the famous representation of marriage in the form of a fisherman's trap. The posthumous Slaapeloose nachten and Twee-en-tachtig jarig leven first appeared without illustrations in the sixth edition of 1700 and are here illustrated with 12 engravings after Jan Goeree, first made for the seventh edition of 1712.Internally in very good condition. Binding rubbed along the extremities and parts of the spine cracked, but with the tooling on the spine still very clear. The complete works of Cats, with the original Van de Venne and the posthumous Goeree illustrations.

[BARDON, Michel Francois Dandré].
First and only Dutch translation of the Costume des anciens peuples by Michel-François Dandré Bardon (1700-1783). The 345 plates (instead of the 356 erroneously announced on the title page), preceded in each part by the descriptions, illustrate the costumes and the customs of the ancient peoples in the field of their religions, everyday life and the military. Parts 1 and 2 contain the plates illustrating the Greek and Roman civilisation, part 3 the Israelites and the Egyptians and part 4 the Persians, Scythians, Amazons etc. Bardon gave a large part of his life to the study of ancient history and he liked to illustrate the subjects of his study with his own hand. Some of his drawing are still in the Louvre Museum and some of his paintings are in the Museum in Marseille. Some water stains to the last few plates of both volumes, bindings slightly rubbed and a large blemish to the front board of the first volume. A good copy, untrimmed. Colas 792; Lipperheide 107; cf. Brunet I, col. 654..
