[French Colonial Trade]
Paris, 1700. [1],11,196pp. Antique-style paneled calf, boards blind ruled, spine gilt, edges sprinkled red. Slightly later ownership inscription on manuscript title page. Light tanning, scattered foxing. Accomplished in a clean, highly legible hand. Very good. A contemporary manuscript copy of the English translation of an Arrêt of the King's Council, promulgated on June 29, 1700, ordering the creation of a Council of Commerce for colonial trade, containing petitions and reports presented by the deputies of the Council of Trade to the Royal Council. A bilingual version of the work was printed in Paris in 1701. After the conclusion of the Nine Year's War in 1697 between France and an alliance of European powers, Louis XIV sought to restore, improve, and expand the country's international trade. The Arrêt orders the creation of a primary trade council in Paris with ten subsidiary councils in important commercial centers such a Lyon, Marseilles, La Rochelle, Lille, and Rouen. Moreover, this work also comprises a wide-ranging study of the state of French trade and how the goals of the king could be accomplished. In addition to the royal order itself, therefore, there are number of memorials discussing different aspects of colonial trade. The principal report presents details of French colonies in the Caribbean, including Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guiana, Saint Kitts & Saint Croix, and Saint Domingue, while other articles discuss the best ways to restore trade with Spain, England, and the Dutch Republic, the Marseillaise monopoly on trade with the Levant, issues regarding internati … [Click Below for Full Description]

HULSBERG, H[enry] after HAWKSMOOR, N[icholas]
London,: Printed for Sam. Harding in St Martins-Lane, Dan. Browne near Temple-Bar, & Wm. Bathoe in Church Lane near St Martins Church, [1700-30. London,: Printed for Sam. Harding in St Martins-Lane, Dan. Browne near Temple-Bar, & Wm. Bathoe in Church Lane near St Martins Church in the Strand,, [1700-30.. with the Arcade fronting Cheapside, as originally intended by Sir Chr. Wren, Kt. Engraving. A print showing the original design for St Mary-le-Bow, one of the first churches to be rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor after the Great Fire of London. The title cartouche alludes to the previous church's fate by the urn of fire surmounting it, similar to the one that tops the Monument. An eagle holds a scroll with a ground plan of the church on the left. Wren modelled the church on the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome, possibly inspired by the belief, as recorded in the text below the print, that the site had once contained a Roman temple (actually an early Norman church). The steeple features a dragon weathervane, a nod to the dragon's place in the legend of England's patron, St George, and to its place in the coat of arms of the City of London. The dragon has red crosses on the underside of its wings, as do the dragons in the City's arms. The Bow dragon was a popular London landmark, appearing in a poem by the libertine Earl of Rochester, and with its equally popular fellow, the grasshopper topping the Royal Exchange (see item 132), in a pamphlet about religious freedom. Henry Hulsberg (fl.1702-1729) was a Dutch engraver of maps and architecture, working in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tutchin, John. 1661? - 1707]
London: Printed in the Year, 1670 [1700]. 1st Edition (Wing T3382B). iv, 23, [1 (blank)] pp. 4to: A^2 B - D^4. 8-1/8" x 6-1/8". Later black half-morocco binding, with marbled paper boards. Binding has small snag at spine base. Age-toning to eps. Withal, a solid VG copy. Item #0155 "John Tutchin was a radical Whig controversialist and political journalist, who's many controversial pamplets and works landed in in court many times. 'Tutchin was convinced, throughout his life, that corruption was rampant and that people were trying to defraud the government or serve an anti-English master'...'He and Defoe quarreled in their public writings, with Defoe representing a more Puritan stripe of the whig party and Tutchin the more democratic and Cromwellian side'...'In May 1704, Tutchin fled to France briefly to escape being seized.'...'After he returned to England, Tutchin continued to rail at Jacobites and French agents everywhere. He accused the Navy of secretly supplying food for the French Navy. This got him arrested again. John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough wrote in a letter to Harley, of the matter, 'If I can't have justice done me, I must find some friend that will break his and the printer's bones.' Whether he did so or not, something terrible did happen to Tutchin in prison. He was beaten severely and died of his injuries in custody on 23 September 1707." Rare political pamphlet on the subject; RBH shows last to the market in a 1963 Frances Edwards catalogue. [Attributes: First Edition]

RICHTER, Johann Gottfried Ohnefalsch.
BMC NH, p. 1700; Dean III, p. 308; VD18 15315576. First and only edition of a curious work on fish by the German preacher Johann Gottfried Ohnefalsch Richter (d. 1765), combining, as the title suggests, ichthyology and theology. Divided into two parts, the first deals with the creation of fish by God, their nature, classification, species, anatomy, etc., also including chapters on the sleeping patterns of fish, how they breathe and the use of fish my men (food, medicine, etc.). The preface is followed by a list of authors and works on which Richter based his work, including Aristoteles, Buffon, Linnaeus, Ovid, Plinius, and many more. The second is the more theological part, describing 25 fish species found in the Bible and discussing the relevant biblical passages, including for example the history of Jonah and the whale. The folding engraved plate depicts types of "fish", including a mermaid, a sperm whale (the species that probably swallowed Jonah), a carp, a Tobias fish, almost all depicted with human-like faces.Somewhat browned throughout, a few leaves near the end slightly creased. Binding slightly worn along the extremities. Overall in good condition.
