Didascalie in francese e olandese. [Click Below for Full Description]

Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau
A detailed Hand-colored stipple engraving by Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-82) From his sweeping book Traite des Arbres Fruitiers Nouvelle edition by Pierre Jean Francois Turpin and Pierre-Antoine Poiteau which was published in Paris in 1807-35. Overall this print measures 10.5"x17". One of the most splendid books on fruit ever produced, Traite des Arbres Fruitiers was the result of the collaboration of two life-long friends, Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840) and Pierre-Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854). The son of a poor artisan, Turpin was largely self-taught but had studied the basic elements of drawing in the art school of his hometown, Vire. At 19, after entering the military five years prior, Turpin was sent to San Domingo in the West Indies where he met the young botanist, and student of the great botanist Pierre-Antoine Poiteau, whom was a student of the great botanical artist Pierre Joseph Redoute. This inspired in Turpin an enthusiasm for natural history. Both Turpin and Poiteau were outstanding botanical artists of the “Redoute” style, and utilized the same techniques of hand-colored stipple engraving that Redoute had devised. The plates were printed by Langlois, a great master of printing who had supervised much of Redoute’s work. Poiteau wrote all of the text to accompany the illustrations. The work covers almonds, peaches and nectarines, apricots and greengages, plums, grapes, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries, currants, pears (over 100 varieties), apples, hazelnuts, walnuts, figs, and even avocados. Only nine plates illust … [Click Below for Full Description]

1700 Possibly from around 1700, perhaps from northern France.: , 1700. A vellum leaf, 580x380mm, with 15 lines of Latin text manuscript on both sides of the leaf. The main text area measures about 370x280mm with some letters extending into the margins. On the recto of the leaf there are three capital letters in red and three in blue, all one line in depth. On the verso there are four capital letters in red, one of which, a decorative 'Q', is two lines deep, plus some rubrication of lower-case letters in the text; there are also four capital letters in blue and a little yellow-metal highlighting. All the rubricated text has a considerable sheen. A flaw in the vellum in the top foredge margin, far away from the text, has old stitch-repair marks. Minimal dusting and fingering. Very slight rubbing. Crisp and clean. We believe this leaf is from a collection formed by Peter Foster [1919-2010], architect and Surveyor of Westminster Abbey 1973-88. Memorials in the abbey for the writers W. H. Auden, Noel Coward and D. H. Lawrence are amongst those designed by Foster. The Vine Press, a private printing press, was also established by Foster in collaboration with his friend John Peters. (Additional information and photographs available on request.) .

MAP OF AN EXPANDING RUSSIAN EMPIRE?La Russie Blanche ou Moscovie?. Copper engraving published by Pieter Schenk in Amsterdam around 1700. With original hand colouring. Size: 49 x 47,5 cm.The map shows Russia during the reign of Czar Peter the Great. Peter expanded the Tsardom through successful wars into a much larger empire to become a major European power. He led a cultural revolution based on the Enlightenment that made Russia modern, scientific, and westernised. He copied the latest political models of the time, making Russia into an absolutist state. He also enacted a nine-member Senate, and divided up the empire in provinces and states (as coloured on the map). He ended the Tsardom of Russia and started the Russian Empire. To make Russia an Empire, Peter went on many military campaigns. Peter?s first military efforts were directed against the Ottoman Turks, who were a constant threat. His attention then turned to the North. Peter still lacked a secure northern seaport (except at Archangel on the White Sea, but the harbour there was frozen for nine months a year). Access to the Baltic was blocked by Sweden, whose territory enclosed it on three sides. Peter?s ambitions for a ?window to the sea? led him to make a secret alliance with Saxony in 1699, the Polish?Lithuanian Commonwealth and Denmark against Sweden, resulting in the Great Northern War. The war resulted in Peter acquiring four Swedish provinces situated south and east of the Gulf of Finland, and the coveted access to the sea was now secured, twenty years after publication of this map.Petrus (Pieter) Schenk (1661 … [Click Below for Full Description]
