AUTOGRAPH]. DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU, Henri-Louis.
, . . Autograph letter, signed, from the French scientist Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) to the French minister of foreign affairs, Gabriel de Choiseul (1718-1785), Duc de Praslin. Choiseul had sent Duhamel a memoire by Claude-Jules Cousinery (1718-1785), French consul in Syrian (now Lebanese) Tripoli, and asked his opinion of it. Duhamel thanks him for the "excellent memoire de M Couzineri", says it is the best he has seen on the subject and notes Cousinery's "sages reflections". It even helped distract Duhamel from his "terrible siatique" (terrible sciatica). The letter says nothing about the memoire's content, but an early manuscript note on the back adds the year 1762 to the date and and indicates that it belongs under the subject Levant and Barbary. The Histoire de l'Académie Royale des Sciences for the year 1760, published in 1766, pp. 23-24, gives a summary of Cousinery's report on the great Syrian earthquake of 30 October 1759 sent to Duhamel: "nous l'apprenons d'une relation que M. Cousinery (Chacelier du Consulat de Tripoly de Syrie) a envoyée à M. du Hamel".With an early manuscript note on the back of the letter. Formerly folded horizontally and vertically for posting. In very good condition. The portrait is trimmed down to the border, but is also in very good condition.

London; Awnsham and John Churchil at The Black Swan. 1700. Fourth Edition. Quarto Bound in recent full panelled calf with red title label. Very handsome. Internally uniformally toned throughout, with neat marginal notes in what appears to be some sort of shorthand. Perhaps a little tired internally but nevertheless a respectable and durable copy. Marginal wear to frontispiece and prelims. The penultimate lifetime edition with additions and revisions by Locke, a new chapter on the association of ideas and a chapter on Enthusiasm appear here for the first time. Often regarded as the birthplace of experimental psychology, this is an important and influential work in an attractive modern binding.

KEPLER, Johannes & BARTSCH, Jakob.
Strasbourg: Johannes Pastorius for Theodor Lerse, 1700. Rare second edition (the first obtainable edition) of the logarithmic tables used in calculating the celebrated Rudolphine Tables. Caspar records only one copy of the first edition, published in Sagan in 1631, and that defective, in the University Library of Königsberg. Jacob Bartsch (1600-1633) was Kepler's son-in-law. After Kepler died in 1630, Bartsch decided that Kepler's logarithms should be made available in a less expensive form than the Rudolphine Tables published in 1627 (the first work to introduce logarithms into the field of astronomy). The intention was to fund the printing by collecting the salery owned owed to Kepler. However, due to failure of his journey to Vienna to collect the money, the printing was stopped and the distribution of the 1631 edition was practically nil. This second edition was brought out by John Caspar Eisenschmid in 1700 and in his introduction he gives a detailed account of the fate of the first edition. This second edition is by no means a common book on the market (ABPC lists only two copies in the past fifty years; 1971 and 1984). A very fine copy, complete with the errata leaf. Caspar 99; Erwin Tomash Library on the History of Computing K-28; Houzeau and Lancaster 12757; Lalande p.338. Six parts in one volume. 8vo: 154 x 92 mm. Fine contemporary vellum with the original clasps intact. Pp. 40, (276), (2:errata). Title page with some very light spotting, otherwise fine and clean throughout.

Fer, Nicholas de / [Nicolas de Fer]. (1646 - 1720)
, 1700. [Paris], c. 1700. Original copper engraved maps. 15.5 cm wide x 13 cm high. Mounted on paper. Very good condition. From a wonderful collection of Maps from an old english library (South Shields) - with a tiny library stamp to the mounting paper (The stamp is NOT on the Map). Nicolas de Fer (1646?25 October 1720) was a French cartographer and geographer.nDe Fer was the youngest of three sons of Antoine de Fer, who was also a cartographer. When he was 12, he became the apprentice of Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx, and made his first map, of the Canal du Midi, at the age of 23. After the death of his father in June 1673, his mother Geneviève initially took over the map making company, which had begun to decline. She passed it and the atelier, called Quai de L'Horloge, on to Nicolas in 1687 because of her old age.nDe Fer was so successful at improving the firm that, in 1690, he became the official geographer to Louis, Dauphin of France. With support from the Spanish and French Royal Families, de Fer also became official geographer for Philip V and Louis XIV, the kings of Spain and France, respectively. Because of this, his maps became Bourbon propaganda, endorsing French King Louis XIV. nHis business flourished, producing town plans, atlases, wall maps, and more than 600 sheet maps. He made maps of places in Europe and North America, including New Spain, places fortified by Vauban, the Low Countries, and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1698, de Fer published a map of North America, which included a depiction of beavers building dams near Niagara Falls. Sevente … [Click Below for Full Description]

AMMAN, Johann Konrad
Amsterdam, J. Wolters, 1700. ***** First edition. "Amman's method of instructing the deaf-mutes. He was one of the most successful of all teachers in this sphere." Garrison-Morton 3353. In-12. [158 x 94 mm] Collation : (24), 120 pp., 1 tableau h.-t. Cartonnage rose de l'époque.

BOULAINVILLIERS, Henri de
(vers 1700-1707).
Paris: L'imprimerie Royale / Jean Boudot, 1696/1700. A fine sammelband comprising the first editions of the first books on the differential and integral calculus, respectively. "It was through his wide network of acquaintances in various European countries that Leibniz put into effect all his strategies for the spread of his analysis. The presence first of Jacob Hermann, the favourite pupil of Jacob Bernoulli, and then of Nicolaus I Bernoulli, the nephew of the Bernoulli brothers, as professors of mathematics in Padua was one outlet ... In France it was through the Oratorian circle of Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715) that Johann Bernoulli introduced in 1691 the Leibnizian calculus. His lessons to the Marquis de l'Hôpital led to the draft of the first treatise of differential calculus (1696) [first offered work], and it was under the influence of Malebranche that some years later appeared the first works on the integral calculus by Louis Carré in 1700 [second offered work] and Charles René Reyneau in 1708. The spread and acceptance of the Leibnizian calculus was transferred in this way to the wide public, through the manuals and textbooks written for students at universities or ecclesiastical colleges." (Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, p.56). "Following the classical custom, [the first work] starts with a set of definitions and axioms... The difference (differential) is defined as the infinitely small portion by which a variable quantity increases or decreases continuously. Of the two axioms, the first postulates that quantities which differ only by infinitely s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henrick SCHERER (Dilingen 1628 - Monaco 1704)
This engraved world map showing primarily the sailing routes from Europe to Asia, including a rather optimistic route to Japan via the Northeast Passage. It is possible that the routes shown on the map were those used by Jesuit missionaries. The unusually formatted map has Australia in the center. The galleons located in the corners of the map symbolize the voyages of the French to New France, the Dutch to the East Indies, the English to New England, and the Spanish to Mexico and Peru. As shown, Scherer portrays California as an island and other newly charted lands, such as Australia and New Zealand.
