MAP OF AN EXPANDING RUSSIAN EMPIRE?La Russie Blanche ou Moscovie?. Copper engraving published by Pieter Schenk in Amsterdam around 1700. With original hand colouring. Size: 49 x 47,5 cm.The map shows Russia during the reign of Czar Peter the Great. Peter expanded the Tsardom through successful wars into a much larger empire to become a major European power. He led a cultural revolution based on the Enlightenment that made Russia modern, scientific, and westernised. He copied the latest political models of the time, making Russia into an absolutist state. He also enacted a nine-member Senate, and divided up the empire in provinces and states (as coloured on the map). He ended the Tsardom of Russia and started the Russian Empire. To make Russia an Empire, Peter went on many military campaigns. Peter?s first military efforts were directed against the Ottoman Turks, who were a constant threat. His attention then turned to the North. Peter still lacked a secure northern seaport (except at Archangel on the White Sea, but the harbour there was frozen for nine months a year). Access to the Baltic was blocked by Sweden, whose territory enclosed it on three sides. Peter?s ambitions for a ?window to the sea? led him to make a secret alliance with Saxony in 1699, the Polish?Lithuanian Commonwealth and Denmark against Sweden, resulting in the Great Northern War. The war resulted in Peter acquiring four Swedish provinces situated south and east of the Gulf of Finland, and the coveted access to the sea was now secured, twenty years after publication of this map.Petrus (Pieter) Schenk (1661 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tartary - Fer, Nicholas de / [Nicolas de Fer]. (1646 - 1720)
[Paris], c. 1700 - Original copper engraved map. 16 cm wide x 13.2 cm high. Mounted on paper. Very good condition. From a wonderful collection of Maps from an old english library (South Shields) - with a tiny library stamp to the mounting paper (The stamp is NOT on the Map). Nicolas de Fer (1646–25 October 1720) was a French cartographer and geographer. De Fer was the youngest of three sons of Antoine de Fer, who was also a cartographer. When he was 12, he became the apprentice of Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx, and made his first map, of the Canal du Midi, at the age of 23. After the death of his father in June 1673, his mother Geneviève initially took over the map making company, which had begun to decline. She passed it and the atelier, called Quai de L'Horloge, on to Nicolas in 1687 because of her old age. De Fer was so successful at improving the firm that, in 1690, he became the official geographer to Louis, Dauphin of France. With support from the Spanish and French Royal Families, de Fer also became official geographer for Philip V and Louis XIV, the kings of Spain and France, respectively. Because of this, his maps became Bourbon propaganda, endorsing French King Louis XIV. His business flourished, producing town plans, atlases, wall maps, and more than 600 sheet maps. He made maps of places in Europe and North America, including New Spain, places fortified by Vauban, the Low Countries, and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1698, de Fer published a map of North America, which included a depiction of beavers building dams near Niagara Falls. Seventeen year … [Click Below for Full Description]

Torna Tooled sollevato. Parte del titolo in marocchino rosso. Protezione della coda logoro. Strofinato insieme. Angoli Blunt. Full sheepskin brown vintage. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. Tail cap threadbare. Rubbed together. Blunt corners. In addition to the dedication that explains the project of the author, the book contains a preface in which the playwright attacks the objections against his play. Boursault died in 1701, before printing. Like most comedies of the author was called comedy with drawers or episodes (in the absence of overall plot), it was written in verse. some passages that could overshadow Louis XIV were censored and rewritten. Boursault often experienced a major success with its beautiful rooms, under a natural comic and satirical, and many turned to good, and he is a key figure in the theater of the time, but his work did not pass the time can -be because of its dramatic weakness. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Eisenmenger, Johann Andreä:
[Frankfurt a. M.], o.V., 1700. - 9 Bll., 998 S. / 1108 S., 8°, Leder d. - Einband berieben, bestossen u. … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Novissima & exactissima totius orbis Terrarum Tabula" Hand coloured copper engraving from the ?Atlas Maritimus Ofte Zee Atlas??. Published in Nuremberg by David Funcke c. 1700. Size: 48 x 55 cm.David Funcke was a Nuremberg publisher, who commissioned works from Homann. This attractive and ingenious map however, derives from a work by Romeyn de Hooghe ?one of the most accomplished Dutch artists of the second half of the 17th century? that appeared in Frederick de Wit's Atlas. The marginal decoration in this work depicting the four elements of Classical philosophy portrays Fire as a military battle; Air as the heavens ruled by the Zodiac and serenaded by Apollo; Earth as a field being harvested and husbandry; and Water, a sea with Dutch ships and a sputing whale. There are Greek gods presiding from the sidelines of all these scenes: Zeus, Hera, Hades, Persephone, Demeter and Poseidon. The map has two large hemispheres and two smaller, polar hemispheres. There is an outline of an Antarctic continent, which De Wit had left blank.Reference: Shirley 616 (and 444), plate 327.Price: ?7.500,- (incl. frame).

No place, [c. 1700]. Large 4to (195 x 268 mm). Title and 30 captioned plates, engraved throughout (image size ca 110 x 170 mm). Late 19th century half calf with gilt spine rules and 18th or early 19th c. giltstamped lozenge label on upper cover. Charming, rare suite of engravings showing the costumes of the Turks, including the Sultan and various courtiers of the Porte, Ottoman soldiers and janissaries, an Arabian preacher, a falconer, street salesmen, a porter smoking a long meerschaum pipe, and several Turkish ladies (one in surprisingly revealing attire). - Charles-Francois Silvestre (1667-1738) held the title of "Maître à dessiner du Roi" (Drawing Master to the King) and was in 1695 appointed art instructor to the young Dukes of Burgundy, Anjou and Berry, the grandsons of Louis XIV. The present suite, dedicated to Louis, Duke of Burgundy, reflects the orientalist fashion of its time but is also a highly original work of art demonstrating a vivid, flamboyant style and not apparently based on earlier illustrations. The title and 21 of the plates are signed in full with the Royal privilege: "F. Silvestre inv. et ex. C.P.R.", while eight are simply signed "S." and one ("Janissaire de la garde, Solac ou Pzyc") is not signed, though it is clearly executed in the same style as the others. Uncommon thus with 31 plates including the title: the copies listed by both Hiler and Colas, as well as that in the Gennadius Library at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, are oblong volumes containing only 30 plates including the title, on a total of 15 leaves (Colas: "titre … [Click Below for Full Description]
