HERMELIN, Olof.)
- (Stockholm, Kungl. tryckeriet), 1700. 4:o. (80) s. Bläcknotering på titelbladet. Snål övre marginal. Tagen ur band, med rödstänkta snitt. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Klemming, Sveriges förhållanden, s. 281. Warmholtz 5238. Olsson s. 168ff & 175ff. ?Examen causarum?

Henrick SCHERER (Dilingen 1628 - Monaco 1704)
This interesting map covers Tartary, a great tract of northern and central Asia stretching from the Caspian Sea and the Ural Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. The depiction of Japan is very unusual with a large, distorted northern island of Hokkaido (Iedso) connected to Honshu by a narrow isthmus. By Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. Scherer, a devout Jesuit, produced this geographical compendium to depict the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. Georg BIURMAN (1700 – 1755). Stockholm circa 1753. Copper engraving with original colour, 48 x 56 cm (18.9 x 22.0 Inches).
- Detailed map with original colour and title in Swedish shows Uppland, a historical province on the eastern coast of Sweden The map was made by Georg Biurman (1700 – 1755), a Swedish surveyor and engraver in Stockholm. He became known for his detailed atlases of Stockholm and Sweden. In 1742 Biurman published his famous travel book on Sweden and Finland Vägvisare uti Svea- och Göta Riken samt Stor-Förstendömet Finland. The guide contains two copper engraved maps with detailed positions of roads, inns, cities, and other locations and distances of the main roads between Stockholm and other towns. Although Biurman’s maps were extremely important and progressive, they were commercially unsuccessful and he needed to close his printing shop. After his death in 1755 his maps were re-published by the Swedish cadastral office. The map was published separetely by Kongliga Lantmäteri Contoiret (Royal Institute of Surveyors). The institute started publishing separately issued maps of Sweden in 1739 with a goal to map the country in uniform maps. The first map was the grand "Charta öfwer Mälaren" by Jacob Nordencreutz. The maps Upland, Västmanland, Södermanland, Nerike, Skåne and a map of Sweden were issued in the 1740s and early 1750s. The next map - map of Medelpad – was not published until 1769. It was followed by the series of maps in the next 25 years, the last one being „harta öfver Heinola Höfdingedöme" in 1793. Many parts of the country were not covered. The maps were never sold bound in an atlas since the project was never finished.

Schenk, Pieter
MAP OF AN EXPANDING RUSSIAN EMPIRE?La Russie Blanche ou Moscovie?. Copper engraving published by Pieter Schenk in Amsterdam around 1700. With original hand colouring. Size: 49 x 47,5 cm.The map shows Russia during the reign of Czar Peter the Great. Peter expanded the Tsardom through successful wars into a much larger empire to become a major European power. He led a cultural revolution based on the Enlightenment that made Russia modern, scientific, and westernised. He copied the latest political models of the time, making Russia into an absolutist state. He also enacted a nine-member Senate, and divided up the empire in provinces and states (as coloured on the map). He ended the Tsardom of Russia and started the Russian Empire. To make Russia an Empire, Peter went on many military campaigns. Peter?s first military efforts were directed against the Ottoman Turks, who were a constant threat. His attention then turned to the North. Peter still lacked a secure northern seaport (except at Archangel on the White Sea, but the harbour there was frozen for nine months a year). Access to the Baltic was blocked by Sweden, whose territory enclosed it on three sides. Peter?s ambitions for a ?window to the sea? led him to make a secret alliance with Saxony in 1699, the Polish?Lithuanian Commonwealth and Denmark against Sweden, resulting in the Great Northern War. The war resulted in Peter acquiring four Swedish provinces situated south and east of the Gulf of Finland, and the coveted access to the sea was now secured, twenty years after publication of this map.Petrus (Pieter) Schenk (1661 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henrick SCHERER (Dilingen 1628 - Monaco 1704)
Interesting map of Africa by Heinrich Scherer for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. Scherer, a devout Jesuit, produced this geographical compendium to depict the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The continent is presented with a fairly accurate coastline, but most of the interior is entirely fictional. The Nile is shown in the traditional manner with its source in the large southern lakes of Zaflan and Zembre. The Zembre, also labeled Lac Zaire spawns the Congo and Zaire Rivers as well. The seas abound with a variety of fascinating sea monsters, one of which has a human face, and wild animals roam the inter … [Click Below for Full Description]
