BOYLE, Robert
London: Printed by Edw Jones, for Henry Herringman, 1700. 8th Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (181 x 118 mm). [16], 174 pp. Signatures: A-M8. Including frontispiece portrait of the author on A1v. Contemporary blind stamped calf (foot of spine damaged, extremities, boards and spine rubbed, corners bumped). Internally browned and spotted throughout (last page stronger), a few contemporary text markings, minor worming to lower blank margin. Provenance: Ric Booth (inscribed on front pastedown and dated 1700); The library of Hugh Selbourne (small ink stamp to half-title verso and p.51). Good, wide-margined copy. ---- Fulton 8. Eighth Edition, very rare with the engraved frontispiece (Fulton does not mention it and speculates whether A1 is a blank). Boyles first separate work. The type of this edition is entirely reset from the previous. Known under the title "Seraphick Love" from the running head used in all 17th -century English editions, it did not find a place on the title-page until the 1693 Latin edition (see Fulton, p.2). Though perhaps as little known as any of Robert Boyle's numerous writings, there is much interest attaching to this work, as well as something of a romance in his life. By 1752, the work had been carried through fifteen English editions or variants. The text was written by Boyle when he was but 22 years old and is in the form of a letter addressed to Lindamor, 'a learned youth, well-born and well-bred.' It was suggested that this imaginary character, who appears in a number of Boyle's writings, was in fact no other than Boyle himself. (F … [Click Below for Full Description]

NETHERLANDS - ROTTERDAM - VUE D'OPTIQUE)
Paris. No date. Ca. late 1700s. Copperplate engraving, handcolored, plate mark 10 1/2 x 16 inches on sheet 13 x 19 1/2 inches. Soiling to outer margins and a couple of tears to upper edge (not affecting image), 1/8 inch hole to left image (barely noticeable), a couple of faint foxing spots. This is an example of a "vue d'optique" or perspective view, a popular print from the second half of the 18th century, designed to be projected with a viewing device (a zograscope or perspective glass) which enhanced the illusion of depth and perspective, providing something of a 3D effect. There is a most interesting and thorough article by C.J. Kaldenbach "Perspective Views which was originally published in Print Quarterly (June 1985) which can be accessed on the web.

Tartary - Fer, Nicholas de / [Nicolas de Fer]. (1646 - 1720)
[Paris]. Mounted on paper. Very good condition. From a wonderful collection of Maps from an old english library (South Shields) - with a tiny library stamp to the mounting paper (The stamp is NOT on the Map). . [Paris], c. 1700. Original copper engraved map. 16 cm wide x 13.2 cm high. Mounted on paper. Very good condition. From a wonderful collection of Maps from an old english library (South Shields) - with a tiny library stamp to the mounting paper (The stamp is NOT on the Map). Nicolas de Fer (1646–25 October 1720) was a French cartographer and geographer. De Fer was the youngest of three sons of Antoine de Fer, who was also a cartographer. When he was 12, he became the apprentice of Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx, and made his first map, of the Canal du Midi, at the age of 23. After the death of his father in June 1673, his mother Geneviève initially took over the map making company, which had begun to decline. She passed it and the atelier, called Quai de L'Horloge, on to Nicolas in 1687 because of her old age. De Fer was so successful at improving the firm that, in 1690, he became the official geographer to Louis, Dauphin of France. With support from the Spanish and French Royal Families, de Fer also became official geographer for Philip V and Louis XIV, the kings of Spain and France, respectively. Because of this, his maps became Bourbon propaganda, endorsing French King Louis XIV. His business flourished, producing town plans, atlases, wall maps, and more than 600 sheet maps. He made maps of places in Europe and North America, including New Spain, places fortified … [Click Below for Full Description]
