[BARDON, Michel Francois Dandré].
Colas 792; Lipperheide 107; cf. Brunet I, col. 654. First and only Dutch translation of the Costume des anciens peuples by Michel-François Dandré Bardon (1700-1783). The 345 plates (instead of the 356 erroneously announced on the title page), preceded in each part by the descriptions, illustrate the costumes and the customs of the ancient peoples in the field of their religions, everyday life and the military. Parts 1 and 2 contain the plates illustrating the Greek and Roman civilisation, part 3 the Israelites and the Egyptians and part 4 the Persians, Scythians, Amazons etc. Bardon gave a large part of his life to the study of ancient history and he liked to illustrate the subjects of his study with his own hand. Some of his drawing are still in the Louvre Museum and some of his paintings are in the Museum in Marseille. Some water stains to the last few plates of both volumes, bindings slightly rubbed and a large blemish to the front board of the first volume. A good copy, untrimmed.

Tulpportretten - begin 18de eeuw
1700. MYSTERIEUZE TULPENSCHILDER Tulpenaquarel van de hand van ?De Tulpenschilder? Vervaardigd begin 18de eeuw. Afm. Prijs: Euro 2.950,- (per stuk, incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling)

[AUTOGRAPH]. DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU, Henri-Louis.
Autograph letter, signed, from the French scientist Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) to the French minister of foreign affairs, Gabriel de Choiseul (1718-1785), Duc de Praslin. Choiseul had sent Duhamel a memoire by Claude-Jules Cousinery (1718-1785), French consul in Syrian (now Lebanese) Tripoli, and asked his opinion of it. Duhamel thanks him for the "excellent memoire de M Couzineri", says it is the best he has seen on the subject and notes Cousinery's "sages reflections". It even helped distract Duhamel from his "terrible siatique" (terrible sciatica). The letter says nothing about the memoire's content, but an early manuscript note on the back adds the year 1762 to the date and and indicates that it belongs under the subject Levant and Barbary. The Histoire de l'Académie Royale des Sciences for the year 1760, published in 1766, pp. 23-24, gives a summary of Cousinery's report on the great Syrian earthquake of 30 October 1759 sent to Duhamel: "nous l'apprenons d'une relation que M. Cousinery (Chacelier du Consulat de Tripoly de Syrie) a envoyée à M. du Hamel".With an early manuscript note on the back of the letter. Formerly folded horizontally and vertically for posting. In very good condition. The portrait is trimmed down to the border, but is also in very good condition.

Gole after Cornelis Dusart - Dutch ice skating scenes
1700. "LA HOLLANDOISE SUR LES PATINS" en "LE HOLLANDOIS SUR LA GLACE" Etsen met aquatint vervaardigd rond 1700 te Amsterdam door Jacob Gole (ca. 1660-1737) naar Cornelis Dusart (1660-1704). Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (prent) elk: 25,5 x 18 cm. Prijs: Euro 1.250,- /stuk (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling)

Madagascar - Pieter Mortier, c. 1700
1700. PIRATE HAVEN MADAGASCAR ?Carte Particuliere de l'Isle Dauphine ou Madagascar et St. Laurens?, copper engraving on two sheets published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam approx. 1700. With original hand coluring. Size: 56,2 x 85,1 cm. A large chart of Madagascar, including the islands of Isle De Bourbon ou de Mascaregne [Mauritius], Santa Apolonia [Réunion], Isle De Ioan de Lisboa [perhaps the island of Rodrigues] and Isles de Comorre [Comoro Islands]. In lower left hand corner an inset map of the bay of Saint Augustin on Madagascar. Madagascar itself shows a place called Masalagem Nova where the Portuguese from Mozambique trade their wines and fruits. The map was published in Pieter Mortier's monumental three-part sea-atlas, 'Le Neptune François'. The first part was a counterfeit of a French original; the second part, the 'Atlas Maritime' contained charts engraved by Romeijn de Hooghe, including the famous chart of the Mediterranean; the third, the 'Suite de Neptune François', contained charts from Portuguese sources. This chart comes from a full-colour example rather than the usual outline. Of particular interest are the delineations of Antongil Bay and Nosy Boraha [Île Sainte-Marie] in the north east: at the time both were havens for European pirates preying on the East India trade and Mughal treasure ships. The actions of William Kidd, Henry Every, John Bowen and Thomas Tew in the region helped make the period of this chart the golden age of piracy. Price: Euro 1.100,-

Europa - Pieter Schenk, ca. 1700
HET EUROPA VAN ROND 1700 ?Europa Excultissima?, kopergravure uitgegeven rond 1700 door Pieter Schenk te Amsterdam. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 50 x 58 cm. Prijs: Euro 750,-

World map - Romein de Hooghe, David Funcke, c. 1700
1700. "Novissima & exactissima totius orbis Terrarum Tabula" Hand coloured copper engraving from the "Atlas Maritimus Ofte Zee Atlas". Published in Nuremberg by David Funcke c. 1700. Size: 48 x 55 cm. David Funcke was a Nuremberg publisher, who commissioned works from Homann. This attractive and ingenious map however, derives from a work by Romeyn de Hooghe "one of the most accomplished Dutch artists of the second half of the 17th century" that appeared in Frederick de Wit's Atlas. The marginal decoration in this work depicting the four elements of Classical philosophy portrays Fire as a military battle; Air as the heavens ruled by the Zodiac and serenaded by Apollo; Earth as a field being harvested and husbandry; and Water, a sea with Dutch ships and a sputing whale. There are Greek gods presiding from the sidelines of all these scenes: Zeus, Hera, Hades, Persephone, Demeter and Poseidon. The map has two large hemispheres and two smaller, polar hemispheres. There is an outline of an Antarctic continent, which De Wit had left blank. Reference: Shirley 616 (and 444), plate 327. Price: Euro7.500,- (incl. frame)
