[ALLARD, Carel].
Atlas van Stolk 3182; Brunet I, pp. 194-195; Cohen, col. 28; KVK & WorldCat (3 copies); Muller, Historieplaten 3038-3071. Extremely rare complete emblematic print series (plus alternative versions of several prints) mercilessly satirizing and ridiculing King Louis XIV of France, his grandson King Philip V of Spain, the Marquise de Maintenon (whom Louis XIV had secretly married after she had been his mistress for years), many others in Louis XIV's court and his allies in the War of the Spanish Succession (1700/01-1714). Most prints, like the title-page, have texts in both Dutch and French. The title and many of the prints gleefully note the total eclipse of the sun that occurred on 12 May 1706, supposedly the day Philip V abandoned his siege of Barcelona (which had been taken by the British six months earlier), presenting it as the total eclipse of the Sun King.In 1877 Muller noted the "great rarity" of all these prints, surviving in far fewer numbers than satirical prints of poorer quality and less importance. "Their value as expressions of the spirit and life of the common people is inestimable: indeed, there is almost no period in our history for which we possess such a rich treasure of prints." They also influenced the better known series on the 1720 South Sea Bubble, two of the present prints serving as direct models for prints in that series. The title-page attributes the emblems to "the leading masters of our century" and some of the plates have been attributed to Romeyn de Hooghe and/or someone from his school, Laurens Scherm and the publisher Carel Allard himself.Al … [Click Below for Full Description]

Genau das will Wehlers - man darf wohl sagen: epochemachendes - Werk leisten. Wooden box (16.5 x 17.0 x 9.2 cm). With mother-of-pearl and brass thread inlays. Brass hook and handle. An elegant, neat little box, covered with delicate mother-of-pearl and brass floral patterns. It was probably used for preserving and carrying a missal, breviary, book of prayer, or perhaps even jewelry. Showing some signs of age and wear, but generally in very good condition. A few tiny worm holes in the rear panel, the metal threads partly incomplete, one side panel lacking one inlay, otherwise hardly showing the wear of time. A very fine item.

MYTHOLOGY)
Paris. No date. Ca. late 1700s. Titian (after). Angelus Zaffonatto (engraved by). Engraving, image 9 1/4 x 14 inches, tipped onto paper support with decorative gouache border, 18 x 23 3/4 inches. This display treatment is evidently old, if not contemporary with the print (the support sheet was washed with green paint (gouache) and the decorative panel and lines applied by hand). The print has been trimmed to just outside the image with title text glued onto verso of support sheet; light soiling to lower right margin of support sheet, the printed image is in very good clean condition. A richly engraved oval composition depicting a lounging Venus - after a painting by Titian Vecellius. "E Tabula Titiani in Pinacotheca regia Neapolitana conservata." printed under title text. An excellent example of the fine work done by "reproductive" printmakers of the 18th century in popularising artworks (see Susan Lambert's book on this topic "The Image Multiplied").

[PHARMACOLOGY - MANUSCRIPT].
A very extensive manuscript medicine book, containing nearly a thousand recipes for medicines and medical instructions for household use. They include syrups, pills, powders, waters, salves, oils and other medicaments for both internal and external use against everything from bad breath, worms, burns and wounds to epilepsy, rabies, plague and scurvy. It also gives instructions for removing splinters and bullets, interpreting urine (pp. 336-340) and other medical care, including help for pregnant women, childbirth and children. Most of the recipes use common herbs, honey, wine and other ingredients readily available to all, but some include items that were not indigenous, such as cinnamon and tobacco (p. 301), as well as antimony (quite dangerous if the dose is too high), one uses pearls, coral and crabs' eyes (p. 207) and another even scrapings from pieces of elephants' tusks. The anonymous author gives several clues to his identity. He notes that he practiced his art for many years in the cities of Aardenburg, Sluis and the surrounding villages and countryside (in southwestern Zeeland). The book contains a 19-page alphabetical index, but 28 pages of additional recipes have been added following it, presumably after the rest was written, and a few slips with additional recipes or notes have been loosely inserted, some near contemporary, others perhaps a century later. The leaf before p. 1 (with the drop-title on its verso) and 3 of the last text leaves are detached or nearly detached, as are several of the endleaves with engravings, but the manuscript is otherwise in good cond … [Click Below for Full Description]

NETHERLANDS - ROTTERDAM - VUE D'OPTIQUE)
Paris. No date. Ca. late 1700s. - Copperplate engraving, handcolored, plate mark 10 1/2 x 16 inches on sheet 13 x 19 1/2 inches. Soiling to outer margins and a couple of tears to upper edge (not affecting image), 1/8 inch hole to left image (barely noticeable), a couple of faint foxing spots. This is an example of a "vue d'optique" or perspective view, a popular print from the second half of the 18th century, designed to be projected with a viewing device (a zograscope or perspective glass) which enhanced the illusion of depth and perspective, providing something of a 3D effect. There is a most interesting and thorough article by C.J. Kaldenbach "Perspective Views which was originally published in Print Quarterly (June 1985) which can be accessed on the web.
