KNOOP, Johann Hermann.
, . . Arnold arboretum I, p. 392; Landwehr, Coloured plates 89, 93; Nissen, BBI 1077, 1078; cf. Hunt 620; Oak Spring Pomona 48. Third Dutch edition, with the illustrations printed from the original plates, of three classic works of pomology (two illustrated). The twenty plates illustrating ninety apples and pears were drawn by the author and engraved by Jan Caspar Philips (ca. 1700-1775) and Jacob Folkema (1692-1767). Those of branches of fruit and nut trees were no doubt drawn by the author as well but are unsigned. Knoop (1700-1769) was gardener to Princess Anne (mother of Willem V, Prince of Orange, and his regent from 1751 to her death in 1759) at her Marienburg estate near Leeuwarden. In this edition, the plates are printed on the outer part of whole sheets bound as folding leaves. This makes it easy to look at the plates while reading the text.In very good condition, with only some browning along old folds in a few plates, a minor marginal water stain in four leaves and the spine slightly chipped. Three standard works on Dutch pomology, well-illustrated and wholly untrimmed, leaving all deckles intact.

Various; Jules Andrieu; Auguste Imbert
64, 1700. Book. A sammelband of works representing the mischief, malice and cunning of women. Being a variety of poetry, prose and essay bound in one volume. Four uncommon works bound as one. With a frontispiece and vignette title to 'La Malice des Femmes Ou Les Fourberies Feminines' and 'Le Demerite Des Femmes'. The first two works to this volume are written anonymously, with no record of their authorship. The first work, 'La Malice des Femmes Avec La Farce de Martin Baton' is undated and there does not appear to be a record of this particular imprint. Dated c1700 in accordance to other Rouen imprints of same pagination. The second work to this volume is a collection of anecdotes regarding the malice or cunning of women. It contains a number of 'comic and entertaining' anecdotes at the expense of women. The third work to this volume is a poem titled 'le merite des femmes' by the famous French playwright, poet and moralist critic. The fourth work to this volume is a piece written by the 19th Century French playwright, Auguste Imbert. This piece has a graphic frontispiece and title page of a woman being hanged. To the preface Imbert speaks of these images he sketched, saying that it is not a hollow dream or imagination but what should be reality. He then goes on to speak of women's wiles. This work is an interesting collection of viewpoints and satire towards women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. All works are in French. Condition: In a quarter calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart with patches of rubbing to the head and tail of spine as w … [Click Below for Full Description]

HYDE, Thomas.
Oxford, Sheldonian Theatre, 1700. 4to. Entirely uncut in modern panelled calf, spine lettered in gilt, retaining the original endpapers; pp. [xxxii], 556, 16 leaves of plates with 18 engraved illustrations (one leaf printed on both sides, a few folding); light spotting in places only, paperflaw to margin of p. 371, a few tiny traces of worming to margins, initially only; a very good copy of a rare and important work on the pre-Islamic belief systems of Persia; provenance: 19th-century bookplate of the Catholic University of Ireland, established in 1854 by John Henry Newman, the Catholic Cardinal, early 18th-century ownership inscription Bourdillon to opposite fly-leaf. First edition. Thomas Hyde (1636-1703) was Shropshire-born orientalist at Oxford. 'His linguistic abilities above all in Persian and also in Arabic were remarkable, but he did little teaching. He proposed or started many projects which he never finished, so that his published work was mostly confined to essays (with many others left unpublished at his death), apart from his magnum opus, the Historia religionis veterum Persarum, published towards the end of his life in 1700. The Historia was an attempt to present for the first time in Europe the beliefs of the ancient Zoroastrians of Persia through material acquired by Hyde from Parsis in western India by the good offices of men in the East India Company's service. Financially the book was a disaster. Hyde was "left in the lurch" by promised subscribers, so that "a great part of the charge fell upon myself" (letter to H. Sloane, 24 Jan 1701, BL, Sloane MS 4038 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Morley, Christopher Love und Theodorus Muyckens:
Jena ; Cröker 1700. Editio Secunda [2. Auflage] Collectanea Chymica Leidensia Contracta. [4] Bl., 785 S., [21] Bl. mit einem gest. Frontispiz 16,5 cm, Ganzpergament der Zeit mit handschr. Rückentitel. grüner Farbschnitt. Frontispiz knapp beschnitten, Vorsatzbll. fleckig, Papier durchgehend etwas gebräunt und leicht fleckig. Pergament stark nachgedunkelt. Siehe: Dictionary of National Biography, Volume 39, S. 73f.: MORLEY, CHRISTOPHER LOVE (fl. 1700), physician, was born in or about 1646, and from his name may probably have been related to Christopher Love [q. v.] the presbyterian. He was entered as a medical student at Leyden 18 Feb. 1676 (English Students at Leyden, Index Society, 1883), being then thirty years of age (Munk), and graduated M.D. in 1679. According to a short account of Morley in the preface to his 'Collectanea Chymica,' he had travelled widely, and apparently practised medicine before coming to Holland. At Leyden he attended the medical practice of Schacht and Drelincourt, with the anatomical lectures of the latter, and also studied chemistry with Maëts and others. Morley was accustomed to take copious notes of lectures, cases, &c., which ultimately extended, it is said, to more than forty quarto volumes. Of these a few have survived, and are now in the British Museum (Sloane MSS., Nos. 1259, 1272, 1273, 1289). They are dated 1677 to 1679, and not only show Morley's diligence as a student, but give an interesting picture of the state of medical education in Leyden at the time. On his return to England he published a little volume on an epidemic fever then … [Click Below for Full Description]
