KEPLER, Johannes & BARTSCH, Jakob
Strassburg: Johannes Pastorius for Theodor Lerse, 1700. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Six parts in one volume. 8vo (154 x 92 mm). 40, [276], [2] pp. including errata leaf bound at end. Fine contemporary vellum with the original clasps intact, blue-dyed edges, spine with faint ink lettering. Title page with some very light spotting, otherwise crisp and clean throughout. A very fine copy. ---- Caspar 99; Erwin Tomash Library on the History of Computing K-28; Houzeau-Lancaster 12757; Lalande p.338. SECOND- AND THE FIRST OBTAINABLE EDITION of the tables used in calculating Kepler's Rudolpine Tables of 1627. Originally published in Sagan in 1631 after Kepler's death by his son-in-law, Jacob Bartsch, the first edition was extremely limited due to financial troubles. Caspar records only one copy, which is defective, of this edition. The second edition as offered here was brought out by John Caspar Eisenschmid in 1700 and in his introduction he gives a detailed account of the fate of the first edition. This second edition is by no means a common book on the market (ABPC lists only two copies in the past fifty years; 1971 and 1984). Kepler's contribution to science is immeasurable, giving future astronomers three major laws of planetary motion, as well as fundamental theories in optics, geometry and logarithms. Bartsch was an important astronomer in his own right, bringing seven new constellations to the celestial charts with his publication of "Usus Astronomicus Planisphaerii Stellati" in 1624. - Visit our website for additional images and information. Bartolomeo Soliani. In 4to; bella bross. marm. antica, tagli picchiettati; pp. 60, (4). .

James Wallace
London: Jacob Tonson, 1700 A good copy of what is probably the earliest published account of the Orkney Islands, in contemporary full leather binding with folding map and plate. The work was originally written by James Wallace (1642-1688) who was a Minister - initially in Ladykirk and then Kirkwall. The manuscript, complete with his drawings, was prepared for publication after his death by one of his sons - also James - who was a botanist. It was published in 1693 under the title of 'A description of the Isles of Orkney', and included an essay on Thule credited to Sir Robert Sibbald. This account was published by James 7 years later, under his own name (and claiming the title of FRS - although he did not hold it). It is largely the same as the previous work, but it adds a section on plants and shells. It was dedicated to the Earl of Dorset and mentions neither his father, nor Sir Robert Sibbald. So this book, although the first to be called 'An Account' is largely a 2nd edition of the work. This copy is in a contemporary full leather binding with raised bands to the spine and the remains of a title label. There is wear to spine joints which are showing signs of splitting at the top and bottom. It is generally clean with the usual light scuffing and edge-wear. Internally the front free endpaper is partly attached to the pastedown and lacks a piece of the top corner. Contents: initial blank; title page; dedication to the Earl of Dorset 3pp; Contents 4pp; corrections 1p; fold out map; text pp 1-147 with folding plate; Essay on Thule pp 148-182; Finis. The contents are very cle … [Click Below for Full Description]
