The title page for the first part is dated 1700, the title page for the second part and the Hawkins dedication are dated 1760, so it seems to be the 1760 edition. the book is clean, tight, square and unmarked with contemporary spine covering of tan calf with five raised bands and bright gilt titles. The boards appear to be the original in brown leather and brass clasps at the fore edge. They have been rubbed to rounding at the corners. The front paste down has the name of John Bell Thirsk. The first part has 302 clear pages with occasional toning and some minor damp stain in the upper corner spine for a dozen or so page near the end. The second part has 128 pages plus an index. The frontispiece of part 2 is a plate of Cotton. Both parts are illustrated with black & white plates. The spine covering has been replaced making this a very handsome book. As this book is from the library of American Impressionist J. Alden Weir, the father of Caroline Weir (Caro Weir Ely), artist, print maker, book binder, there is a chance it was she who did this work.

(Gardiner, Robert)
1700. Handwritten transcription, bound in contemporary paneled calf, 224 numbered pages, plus transcription of title page, dedication, etc. In an early 18th century hand. Gardiner's book ran 494 pp, and with a catchword at the end of p. 224, we suspect that there was at least one other volume that the assiduous scribe set down. Having no knowledge of the economics of the book trade back then, we still think it would have been easier for the poor law student to buy a copy than spend the dozens of hours transcribing it, but who are we to say? With material on statutes governing witchcraft, as well as much discussion of sodomy and buggery (and the difference between the two) this is a remarkable object of both penmanship and as evidence of extreme labor. Binding is good, some amateurish gluing of spine and joints by previous owner, text good and readable. Good.
