Vind. Printed on contemporary laid paper, in very good condition. Magnifient and rare theological thesis page with the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception developed by Giovanni Duns Scoto. The debate over when - and not if - Mary was made sinless is one of the reasons why the Church did not officially define the doctrine until 1854, when the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin was officially defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854. His pronouncement settled a dispute among theologians known as the ""Maculists"", and the ""Immaculists" (the Franciscan Spiritualists). The Maculists following St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Bernard taught that Mary, at her conception, first incurred original sin and then received fullness of grace. The Duns Scotus' theses, as reported in the first cartouche in the lower left, were exposed by Antonio Lazari in Rome, lector jubilatus, in the convent of Ara Coeli in 1700, under the auspices of Leopold I. The first cartouche at the top right with the title ""Architrophaeum Scoti"" reports a Roman Inquisition decree whereby the Scotus's writings are lawful and can be printed, but in fact, in the List of Prohibited Books until 1704, there was: "Tabella aenea Augusta Vindelícorum per EN infculpta & per A Senecher ampliata cui titulus Architrophaeum Scoti: per Mag Sac Palatij Apost. 12 Iiinij 1700". Is obtained, therefore, a safe teminus post quem for the publication of the work, precisely June 12 of 1700. It is obtained, also, that this publication was not in any way permitted by the Master of the Sacred Apostolic Palace that had jurisdiction over the books printing and selling. From the top, at the center is the figure of God the Father, with the dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit, at his right, the prophet Elijah taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Just below, the figure of Jesus, to which feet are depicted Death and the Devil, and the To the right of the Virgin, there is a group of figures including S. Domenico, on whose head is a star, San Bernardino for the attribute of the tablet with the monogram IHS; St. Stephen, with the stone in his hand; St. Anthony of Padua, with lily in hand,; St. John the Evangelist holding a chalice with a snake. To the left of Jesus, the Emperors Constantine and Charlemagne, standing, holding a cathedral, the crowned head and cloak, as a symbol of the Sacred Roman Empire. Below , two angels holding a tapestry with the image of S, Paul and the phrase ""Et manu silentium indicens"" (Act. Apost.13). Immediately below them, two angels holding hands with a tapestry with the image of S, Paul and the phrase ""Et manu silentium indicens"" (Att. Apost.13). On the right is depicted Duns Scotus and the phrase Dignare me laudare te, Virgo sacrata (""Make me worthy, O blessed Virgin, of praise""), that he said before entering the great assembly, passing the chapel of the Royal Palace, on whose frontispiece bottom was a statue of Mary carved stone. Beside him are other figures, including the Peace, in the guise of women, with the Caduceus, and Charity holding the chalice with flame. On the other side, are depicted St. Thomas Aquinas, kneeling to the Virgin, and with the sun on the heart, and next to him probably St. Thomas the Apostle. In the down scene, at the right, are portrayed Leopold I of Habsburg and his wife Maria Teresa on a carriage that crushes men, the Turks enemies. On the wheels and on the tapestry there are some victories against Turks. On the left, the Pope with the tiara on his head holding a chalice. Above the cartouches are the signature of: Ioannes Ongher, Abraham Sinacher and the monogram EN which was interpreted as Elias Nessenthaler, German engraver of the late seventeenth century, or Engelhardt Nunzer, painter and illustrator active in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century (see Nagler, 'Monogrammisten' II, nr.1703)" 635 965

Breve descrizzione corografica del Peloponneso o' Morea.

Venice, Domenico Lovisa, 1700. - 4to. (8), 136 p. Contemp. limp vellum. First edition; reprinted in 1704. "Pacifico spent many years studying the topography of Greece in the wake of the Venetian successes against the Turks from 1684 to 1688. His book of 1686, ['Descrittione delle Provincie che formano la Penisola della Morea'], was followed by 'Notizia del Ducato del Atene' (1687) after the Venetian conquest of the city in that year, any by 'Historiografia dell' Isola e Città di Scio' (1694). His undated work on Evvoia, 'Descrizzione del Regno e Isola di Negroponte', was published at Treviso, and he is also credited with the authorship of 'Esatta Notitia del Peloponneso', published by Albrizzi in 1687" (Blackmer). - The Morean War (also known as the Sixth Ottoman-Venetian War), fought between 1684 and 1699, was part of the wider conflict known as the "Great Turkish War", between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire. The major campaign was the Venetian conquest of the Peloponnese peninsula. On the Venetian side, the war was fought to avenge the loss of Crete in 1669, while the Ottomans were entangled in their northern frontier against the Habsburgs and were unable to concentrate their forces against the Republic. The Morean War remains the only Ottoman-Venetian conflict from which Venice emerged victorious. Venice's expansionist revival would be short-lived however, as their gains were reversed by the Ottomans in 1715. - Evenly browned throughout due to paper; insignificant waterstain near end. A good copy. Weber II, 754. ICCU \LIAE\015519. Cf. Blackmer 1233 (2nd ed. only).

The Mariners Magazine. [.] Revised, corrected and enlarged by John Colson.

London, Richard Mount, 1700. - Folio. (10), 148, 116, (48) pp. (pages 109, 100, 111, and 112 bound out of order). With plates, tables and 3 volvelles. 18th century panelled calf with the binding dated "1734" and with a newer, and heavily buttressed, spine added. A very good copy of this important, influential and rare-to-the-market nautical classic, being the fourth edition with "Useful Additions". - Samuel Sturmy states that he was apprenticed to a Bristol sailmaker and thereafter commanded ships sailing out of Bristol, primarily to Virginia and to the West Indies. His experiences formed the core of the work herein described, a work produced by him to provide his three brothers, his sons, and other young seamen with all of the information they would need - even if their own mathematical abilities were restricted to ordinary arithmetic. Sturmy wrote in a lively fashion, and in the sections pertaining to seamanship the usual commands and responses were set forth as a dialogue between the ship's captain and the crew, parts of which were used verbatim by Jonathan Swift in "Gulliver's Travels". It is from Sturmy's book that Dampier remembered the recipe ("receipt") for gunpowder. Sturmy's work also contains what may be one of the earliest complete explanations of the construction of a polar gnomonic chart, presenting a detailed example of a great circle route from the Lizard to the Bermudas. The Oxford Reference states: "The gnomonic chart became popular with the publication by Hugh Godfray in 1858 of two polar gnomonic charts covering the greater part of the world, one for the northern and the other for the southern hemisphere. Although it was generally believed that Godfray was the original inventor of this method of great circle sailing, it is interesting to note that a complete explanation of the construction of a polar gnomonic chart, with a detailed example of a great circle route from the Lizard to the Bermudas, appeared in Samuel Sturmey's 'Mariners' Mirror', of 1669." - A superior copy of a rare and highly notable book: an early classic of navigation, of which few copies in any edition have come to auction over the last several decades and which constitutes a critical component of any any nautical library.

18th Century Manuscript Chinese and Japanese Bird Encyclopedia.

      N. P.: N. P.. Very Good. 1700s. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Circa early 18th century. 10 1/8" x 7 1/8" (257mm x 193mm). Stab bound plain wrappers. 52 leaves, each leaf's verso and recto containing calligraphic manuscript and ink drawings of birds and birdlike creatures. Very good: sound binding, worm holing throughout and occasional small closed tears. A captivating compendium of birds and other mythical animals, this manuscript was sold by Sotheby's in its March 13, 1973 sale of Fine Japanese Prints, Screens and Chinese and Japanese Paintings (lot 413). Likely a Japanese artist, with text in Chinese and some Japanese Katagana, its every page is filled with drawings as well as descriptions of the animals and creatures depicted. The birds are seen hunting, flying and nesting. Among the 104 illustrations are a peacock, pelican, hawk and many more. There are also at least 8 mythological creatures including a phoenix, a dragon, a three headed bird, and at least two birds with human heads. A lovely and unique blending of art and text.         A Discourse Upon Grants and Resumptions.

London: Printed for James Knapton, 1700. Showing How Our Ancestors Have Proceeded with such Ministers As have Procured to Themselves Grants of the Crown-Revenue And that the Fortified Estates Ought to be Applied towards the Payment of the Public Debts. Octavo (118 x 188mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine with raised bands and new red morocco label, edges sprinkled red. Engraved armorial bookplate "Joliffe" to front pastedown. Joints and one corner skilfully repaired, short crack at foot of front cover, last few leaves a little dogeared; a very good copy. First edition. Charles Davenant (1656?1714), a government official and political economist, was from 1678 to 1689 Commissioner of Excise. He produced a steady flow of political and economic writings dealing with aspects of taxation, public debt, monetary and trade questions, foreign policy, and criticisms of Whig policy in general. The present work gives a detailed criticism of the gifting of forfeited land by the crown. Davenant provides historical examples from English and Roman history and individual histories of ministers of state who were impeached for receiving grants. The last section of the book deals with the policy which should be followed in the case of the Irish forfeitures, Davenant arguing that the Irish land should be used for the public revenue.

[12], 458 [2] pp. Illustrated with woodcut head pieces, initials, and tail pieces. Folio, 294 x 193 mm, bound in full nineteenth-century Portuguese speckled calf. Em Lisboa : Na officina de Migvel Manescal, Impressor do S. Officio, da Serenissima Casa de Bragança, & de Sua Eminençia, 1700. First Edition of this extremely scarce work on the persecution and martyrdom of Christian missionaries in Cochinchina, the southern region of Vietnam, as well as the northern provinces of Tonkin, at the end of the seventeenth century. This volume is considered one of the most important European works on Cochinchina from that time period. Jesuit priest Manuel Ferreira arrived in Vietnam in 1694, after having served as a missionary elsewhere in the East Indies since 1658. Ferreira offers a description of the region, including history, local customs, geography, and vegetation, before going on to discuss the establishment of the Jesuit missions. Much of the text focuses on the persecution, imprisonment, and often brutal murders of Christian missionaries who refused to renounce their faith, reporting that men were beheaded while women were thrown to the elephants. He goes on to describe the remarkable resolve of the fearless missionaries to continue making inroads for the establishment of Christian missions in Vietnam. The copy includes the signature of historian Prosepero Peragallo on the title-page, dated "Lisbona, 1875." As common with other copies of this volume, several irregularities in pagination occur, though the text is complete: page 117 is incorrectly numbered 517, page number 270 occurs twice (in place of page number 271), and page 386 is incorrectly numbered 356. Several sections of the text are browned, and there is a small ink spot near the spine fold on page 250. Inscription of "1665" in the margin of page 293. Palau 194164.       Andreas Otto, Frankfort and Leipzig 1700 - [1],[10],140pp. Modern brown crushed morocco The first German promotional tract for Pennsylvania. Scarce first edition of an important early source on the history of Pennsylvania, written by the founder of Germantown. Pastorius, born in Germany in 1651, formed an acquaintance with William Penn, became a Quaker and helped organize the Frankfort Land Company. Securing 15,000 acres of land in Pennsylvania, he emigrated in 1683 and soon thereafter layed out Germantown, of which he was the principal founder. This epistolary work includes letters written from Pennsylvania to his father describing the region, including its form of government and providing advice to emigrants. In the rear of the work is a printing in German of William Penn's Letter to the Committee of the Free Society of Traders. Pastorius, Winsor writes, was "the most active and intelligent of the first German settlers" and his work "is of great interest, as it contains the views of one thoroughly identified with the German movement to America" (Winsor). This work stands at the beginning a the "Pennsylvania Dutch" culture of Pennsylvania, still a vibrant culture today. European Americana 700/212; Howes P115 "B"; Sabin 59028; Winsor III:502.
