Parigi 1700 - Incisione in rame, mm 454x560. Copper engraving, mm 454x560. From "Le Théatre du Monde ". Dedicated to Filippo V, it partly derives from the previous map by Giacomo Cantelli. Inset description of the island top left. There are 3 different editions of the map (1702, 1717, 1742) with different date. Our example has the date erased. Good condition, full margins but with horizontal folds and restoration at upper and lower margins at centerfold.Valerio-Spagnolo, Sicilia 1477-1861.         Breve descrizzione corografica del Peloponneso o' Morea. Venice, Domenico Lovisa, 1700.

1700. 4to. (8), 136 p. Contemp. limp vellum. First edition; reprinted in 1704. "Pacifico spent many years studying the topography of Greece in the wake of the Venetian successes against the Turks from 1684 to 1688. His book of 1686, ['Descrittione delle Provincie che formano la Penisola della Morea'], was followed by 'Notizia del Ducato del Atene' (1687) after the Venetian conquest of the city in that year, any by 'Historiografia dell' Isola e Città di Scio' (1694). His undated work on Evvoia, 'Descrizzione del Regno e Isola di Negroponte', was published at Treviso, and he is also credited with the authorship of 'Esatta Notitia del Peloponneso', published by Albrizzi in 1687" (Blackmer). - The Morean War (also known as the Sixth Ottoman-Venetian War), fought between 1684 and 1699, was part of the wider conflict known as the "Great Turkish War", between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire. The major campaign was the Venetian conquest of the Peloponnese peninsula. On the Venetian side, the war was fought to avenge the loss of Crete in 1669, while the Ottomans were entangled in their northern frontier against the Habsburgs and were unable to concentrate their forces against the Republic. The Morean War remains the only Ottoman-Venetian conflict from which Venice emerged victorious. Venice's expansionist revival would be short-lived however, as their gains were reversed by the Ottomans in 1715. - Evenly browned throughout due to paper; insignificant waterstain near end. A good copy. Weber II, 754. ICCU \LIAE\015519. Cf. Blackmer 1233 (2nd ed. only).

MAPPE-MONDE DRÉSSE SUR LES OBSERVATIONS DE MRS. DE L'ACADEMIE ROYAL DES SCIENCES ET QUELQUES AUTRES SUR LES MEMOIRES LES PUS RECENS

Paris: Chez l'Auteur Rue des Canettes pres de St. Sulpice, 1700. Copper-engraved map, handcolored in outline. Sheet size: 17 1/8 x 26 1/8 inches. Good condition, cut to just within the plate mark, with expert repairs to margins and central fold. The rare first state of the celebrated world map by De l'Isle, "one of the foremost cartographer's of the age" (Shirley). This highly important map proved to be one of the most influential world maps of its time, and is present here in the rare first state. De l'Isle was a much esteemed figure who, after being tutored by the great Jean-Dominique Cassini, became the geographer to the French Academy of Sciences in 1702, and then Premier Géographe to Louis XV in 1718. Rodney Shirley notes that "De L'Isle's work is distinguished by its scientific basis, the minute care taken in all departments, constant revision, and personal integrity." In this map of the world De l'Isle was among the first cartographers to re-establish California's true form as a peninsula, to give more or less accurate configurations of all five Great Lakes, and to show the full extent of the Mississippi. He was also one of the first to correct the exaggerative attenuated form of the Mediterranean Sea. In fusing New Guinea and Australia, he followed William Dampier's presumably personal survey, but resisted the temptation to join Tasmania and New Zealand to Australia, an error soon to be popular. Curiously, the tip of South America is shown to curve sharply into the Pacific, a detail conspicuously amended in subsequent states of the map. The map also features the tracks of important circumnavigators including Magellan, Mendaña, Dampier, Van Noort, Le Maire and Schouten, and the antipodean tracks of Abel Tasman. SHIRLEY, THE MAPPING OF THE WORLD: EARLY PRINTED WORLD MAPS 1472-1700, 603, plate 416. WAGNER NORTHWEST COAST 461.

Bound in contemporary marbled boards (sympathetically repaired), corners worn and spine partially defective. COMPLETE with engraved title-page and 26 double-page maps, all colored by a contemporary hand, plus the engraved Index leaf ("Atlas Minor") bound in at end. Soiling throughout, some corners of maps worn, unobtrusive stablizing repairs, childish penciled scribble on verso of one map, small burn hole in lower cover extending through Index leaf and final three maps (not objectionable). A well used but honest copy in a contemporary binding, with original hand-colouring throughout, and absolutely complete. Complete, hand-coloured copy of the First Edition of the first Atlas published by Petrus Schenk the Elder (1660-1718/9), the important and prolific Amsterdam map-maker. The maps are by various authorities: Janssonius, Nic. Visscher, Danckerts, De Wit, Van Keulen, Ottens, Hondius, Valk, and Peter Schenk himself. The Sanson maps are the first ones that Schenk published. The fine frontispiece was designed by G. de Lairesse and engraved by Jac. Baptist after a drawing by Phil. Tideman. It depicts Neptune, a woman representing Europe who gestures towards a massive globe, at the base of which two putti engage in cartography, in the foreground are two lions, and in the background the massive figure of Atlas holding the world. Some of the maps have elaborate figures by none other than Romeyn de Hooghe. While the great World map, and the map of North and South America are justly celebrated, and frequently reproduced, of particular interest to us is the map of "Belgii Pars Septentrionalis communi nomine Vulgo Hollandia" which has been overlooked by virtually all authorities: at the top there is an inset map of the East Coast of the United States, in which are specifically named "Niew Neederland," "Nova Anglia," "Lang Eylant," "Niew Iarsey," "Niew Jorck," "Pennsylvania," and "Virginia." There is also a charming view of New York City taken from the Battery. Our copy collates exactly as per Koeman, and - more importantly - with the engraved list of maps bound in at the end, namely: 26 maps + the title page (see below); Koeman describes this edition as the first, noting that Schenk then begin issuing composite volumes under the same title, containing reimpressions of the present maps, plus some "new" maps, plus maps from other atlases. By definition, the number of maps in these later volumes varied from copy to copy. It is noteworthy the restrikes of the present maps are characterized by significantly inferior impressions, as we would expect considering that some of the plates had been in continuous use for 10-15 years. CONTENTS: 1. Titulus (erased ink inscription on back of Europa and chest of Atlas; lion's eyes dotted with pencil; one putti outlined in black ink). 2. Nova orbis Tabula. 3. America (tear along lower plate mark with loss of a portion of blank margin). 4. Africa. 5. Asia. 6. Europa. 7. Moscovia sive Russia. 8. Suesia Scandanavia. Dania et Norvegia. 9. Dania. 10. Germania. 11. Bohemia. 12. Rhenus Superior. Lotharingia, Helvetia, Alsatia, Suevia, Burgandia. 13. Rhenus Inferior (bound before Map 12). 14. Hollandia. 15. Belgium Regium (vignette of soldier in upper left with verizontal and vertical pencil rules). 16. Flandria. 17. Brabantia. 18. Anglia, Scotia & Hibernia. 19. Gallia (this map is dated "1709" although Koeman dates this edition of the Atlas to "ca. 1700"). 20. Hispania & Portugallia. 21. Italia, Corsica & Sardinia (creased along fold in right gutter margin). 22. Sabaudia et Pedemontium. 23. Hungaria, Graesia, Morea, Condia & Archipelagus. 24. Mare Mediterraneum. 2 fols. 25. Polonia, Lithuania, Podolia, Ukrania, Prussia, Livonia, et Churlandia. 26. Turcicum Imperium. 27. Terra Sancta. Engraved list of maps: "Atlas Minor ex optimurum & probatissimorum virorum et praesertim Sansonianis, mappis accuratissimis, a Petro Schenck." That most copies of the first edition of the "Atlas Contractus" have been dismembered by printsellers is attested by the fact that only 9 copies worldwide have been located: Tulane, Syracuse, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, University Library Groningen, Topografische Dienst Delft, Museum Plantin-Moretus Antwerp, Stadsbibliotheek Maastricht, Tilburg University Library, University of Groningen Library. Rare on the market: the only copy of this first edition that we have been able to trace was sold nearly 60 years ago (Sotheby's London, 9 April 1956, lot 295). Provenance: Carlo Bourbon del Monte, 4th Prince of San Faustino (1868-1917) -- by descent to his son, Ranieri Bourbon del Monte, 5th Prince of San Faustino (1900-1977) -- by descent to his wife, the American Lydia Bodrero (1902-2009) -- by descent to her son, Montino Bourbon del Monte, 6th Prince of San Faustino, Marchese del Monte Santa Maria, of Santa Barbara, CA (b. 1942).         Abraham of Lontesano, Rabbi of Constantinople.

Amsterdam 18th century - Oil on canvas, 81.5 x 64 cm. A fine oil painting featuring the renowned Greek Rabbi, Abraham ben Raphael Lonzano. Abraham ben Raphael Lonzano - sometimes spelled Lontesano - born around 1700 in Zakinthos, a Greek island, was a Kabbalist and Hebrew grammarian. He became known through his work on Hebrew grammar titled "Kinyan Avraham". Following anti-semitic attacks on the local population, Lonzano left the country and started travelling around Europe. He studied at the yeshivah "Ez Hayyim" in Amsterdam, where he likely met the artist. Eventually settling down in Prague, he criticized local yeshivah scholars for studying the Torah without knowledge of the Hebrew language. Lonzano wrote "Hamishah Kinyanim", a commentary to the Sefer Yezirah, the "Book of Formation / Creation". At the end of his life he converted to Christianity in the Prussian town of Idstein and adopted the name Willhelm Heinrich Neumann.

[Paris] 1700 - Beautifully handcoloured Original Engraving (copper engraving). [Paris], c.1700. 59 cm wide x 49 cm high. Excellent condition of this beautiful original 18th century map. (Wikipedia). Sprache: French Excellent condition of this beautiful original 18th century map.

The Historical Antiquities of Hertfordshire: with the original of counties, hundreds or wapentakes and hamlets; the foundation and origin of monasteries, churches, and vicarages; the several honors, mannors, and parks of the nobility and gentry; and the succession of the lords each. Faithfully collected from public records, ancient manuscripts and other select authorities...

First edition, folio, [12], 601, [23]pp., including the very rare leaf "Directions for Placing the Cuts...", mounted engraved frontispiece portrait, title-page printed in red and black, folding engraved map and 44 engraved plates, most double-page or folding, text and plates a little age toned, a couple of plates with splash stains, marbled endpapers, full blue nineteenth-century morocco, blind and gold tooling on cover and spine, a little rubbed but still a nice copy."Sir Henry Chauncy, (1632-1719), lawyer and antiquary. Although he did not give up the legal profession at this time, Chauncy's landed inheritance gave him the opportunity and financial resources to compile his monumental work, The Historical Antiquities of Hertfordshire, finally published as a single large volume in 1700 in a print run of 500 copies and dedicated to its principal sponsor, the third earl of Bridgewater. Beginning with an account of the county's soil and rivers and its 'inhabitants and government', it then proceeds on a hundred by hundred basis, describing the origins of towns and villages, the descent of their manors, depicts various family coats of arms, and goes on to list the vicars, rectors, and monuments of the county's parish churches. Chauncy's work can be regarded as the first true history of the county, its text illustrated by forty-six engravings, the great majority of them bird's-eye perspective drawings of the seats of the noblemen and gentlemen who had subscribed to the publication."--(ODNB).

        Lettre autographe signée. S. l., [ca 1700].

1700. 1p. 46.5:34cm (15 lignes).

The Mariners Magazine. [...] Revised, corrected and enlarged by John Colson. London, Richard Mount, 1700.

1700. Folio. (10), 148, 116, (48) pp. (pages 109, 100, 111, and 112 bound out of order). With plates, tables and 3 volvelles. 18th century panelled calf with the binding dated "1734" and with a newer, and heavily buttressed, spine added. A very good copy of this important, influential and rare-to-the-market nautical classic, being the fourth edition with "Useful Additions". - Samuel Sturmy states that he was apprenticed to a Bristol sailmaker and thereafter commanded ships sailing out of Bristol, primarily to Virginia and to the West Indies. His experiences formed the core of the work herein described, a work produced by him to provide his three brothers, his sons, and other young seamen with all of the information they would need - even if their own mathematical abilities were restricted to ordinary arithmetic. Sturmy wrote in a lively fashion, and in the sections pertaining to seamanship the usual commands and responses were set forth as a dialogue between the ship's captain and the crew, parts of which were used verbatim by Jonathan Swift in "Gulliver's Travels". It is from Sturmy's book that Dampier remembered the recipe ("receipt") for gunpowder. Sturmy's work also contains what may be one of the earliest complete explanations of the construction of a polar gnomonic chart, presenting a detailed example of a great circle route from the Lizard to the Bermudas. The Oxford Reference states: "The gnomonic chart became popular with the publication by Hugh Godfray in 1858 of two polar gnomonic charts covering the greater part of the world, one for the northern and the other for the southern hemisphere. Although it was generally believed that Godfray was the original inventor of this method of great circle sailing, it is interesting to note that a complete explanation of the construction of a polar gnomonic chart, with a detailed example of a great circle route from the Lizard to the Bermudas, appeared in Samuel Sturmey's 'Mariners' Mirror', of 1669." - A superior copy of a rare and highly notable book: an early classic of navigation, of which few copies in any edition have come to auction over the last several decades and which constitutes a critical component of any any nautical library.
