Oblong 4to (240 x 282 mm). 18 plates: engraved title and 17 numbered etchings, engraved captions in German, by Melchior Küsel after Baur. Watermarks: 1) hunting horn, 45 x 32 mm., lettered below A I F; 2) serpent (95 x 37 mm.) coiled around an anchor(?) with leaf-shaped upper escutcheon lettered MD(?). Most in very good impressions. Some marginal soiling or foxing, a stain to title from erasure of shelfmark, crease marks to a few plates, plate 6 just shaved at foremargin. Modern morocco-backed boards (bowed). Provenance: Carl Gustav Schmidtsche Bibliothek, purple ink-stamp on title with ink shelfmark no. 494 (old attempts to erase the same number elsewhere on title-page causing small stain).*** only separate edition of a suite of delightful landscape etchings after the miniature painter and engraver J. W. Baur, etched by Melchior Küsel, Augsburg engraver and goldsmith, and published by his son-in-law Johann Ulrich Krauss, the preeminent Augsburg print publisher of his generation. The etchings show mountainous or riparian vistas from Italy, the Alps, the Pyrénées, and Dalmatia, dotted with castles, waterfalls, grazing sheep, etc., most painted from life by Baur on his travels to and from Italy in the 1630s. These sensitive small format landscapes and views, which Baur painted habitually on vellum and with which he came to be associated, are depicted as subjects in their own right or dominate foreground scenes of, for example, Neapolitan peasants playing ball, hunting parties, mythological or religious subjects such as Daphne and Phoebus or St. Leopold's discovery of his wife's veil (on which site he founded Klosterneuburg), or even a pair of unidentified strolling angels. This is one of at least five different thematic tirages à part published by Krauss of selected plates from Baur's and Küsel's Iconographia, a four-part collection of Baur's work, encompassing a Passion suite as well as a selection of his landscapes, emblems, garden views, etc., first published (also by Krauss) in 1670-72 and reprinted four times thereafter, with the last edition appearing in 1702. The plates appeared in part 3 of the Iconographia; for this issue the imprints were re-engraved within the image, the plates were renumbered, and the captions, in letterpress in the Iconographia, were engraved (and occasionally shortened) in the lower blank margins of each plate. I locate no copies in the US; OCLC and KVK list 4 copies in German libraries. In N. America there are copies of the Iconographia (various editions) at Harvard, Univ. of Louisville, Getty Center, the Univ. of Laval, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. VD17 1:073094G (16 plates only); Hollstein German 22:476-490; cf. Thieme-Becker (Seeman reprint) 3:89-90 and 22:73-4.

Prijs: ?850,-.

World map - Romein de Hooghe, David Funcke, c. 1700.

"Novissima & exactissima totius orbis Terrarum Tabula" Hand coloured copper engraving from the ?Atlas Maritimus Ofte Zee Atlas?'. Published in Nuremberg by David Funcke c. 1700. Size: 48 x 55 cm.David Funcke was a Nuremberg publisher, who commissioned works from Homann. This attractive and ingenious map however, derives from a work by Romeyn de Hooghe ?one of the most accomplished Dutch artists of the second half of the 17th century? that appeared in Frederick de Wit's Atlas. The marginal decoration in this work depicting the four elements of Classical philosophy portrays Fire as a military battle; Air as the heavens ruled by the Zodiac and serenaded by Apollo; Earth as a field being harvested and husbandry; and Water, a sea with Dutch ships and a sputing whale. There are Greek gods presiding from the sidelines of all these scenes: Zeus, Hera, Hades, Persephone, Demeter and Poseidon. The map has two large hemispheres and two smaller, polar hemispheres. There is an outline of an Antarctic continent, which De Wit had left blank.Reference: Shirley 616 (and 444), plate 327.Price: ?7.500,- (incl. frame).

        tulpportretten 18de eeuw.

        Oceana

1700. First Edition . HARRINGTON, James. The Oceana of James Harrington, and His Other Works; Som wherof are now first publish’d from his own Manuscripts. The whole Collected, Methodiz’d, and Review’d, With An Exact Account of the Life Prefix’d… London: Printed, and are to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1700. Folio, period-style half polished brown calf, raised bands, burgundy morocco spine label, marbled boards, renewed endpapers. $3000.First collected edition of Harrington’s works, featuring the important Oceana, an impressive folio volume containing his design of a model plan of government to be adopted in place of the monarchy, a work which greatly influenced the development of the American Constitution. This important collection, the first to include John Toland’s life of Harrington, represents the first publication of several of Harrington’s works. After the death of Charles I, Harrington “set himself the task of designing a model plan of government to be adopted by the English people in place of the monarchy that had been set aside. The result of this undertaking is The Commonwealth of Oceana,” which was seized at Cromwell’s order and was allowed to be printed in 1656 through the intervention of Cromwell’s daughter. Oceana calls for a government based on “the supremacy of reason over passion, which makes the true commonwealth ‘an empire of laws, not of man” (Coker, 499-500). In Harrington’s ideal state a legislative body proposed laws, the people ratified them, and a magistracy enforced them. Oceana introduced classical republicanism into English political thought, and Harrington’s tenets were carried undiluted to the colonies: “It was in America that Harrington’s influence was strongest. The written constitution, the unlimited use of elective principle and the separation of powers are all points which may have been derived directly from the Oceana, while all the minor points seem to have been first formulated by (him). His influence is best seen in the early constitutions of the proprietary colonies, Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania” (Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences). “Other than Utopia, [Oceana] is perhaps the most famous attempt at envisioning a model commonwealth” (Pforzheimer 449). Edited by John Toland. With engraved allegorical frontispiece, engraved portrait of Harrington, and folding plate depicting “The Manner and Use of the Ballot.” Title page printed in red and black. A Covenanted People 39. Goldsmith 3735. Wing H816. Kress 2225. See Sowerby 2335.         Fine large half-length engraving of this important choreographer and dancing master by François Chereau (1680-1729) after Robert Tournières (1667-1752)

Paris: [ca. 1700]. Pécour is depicted seated at a table with an open book of dances in Feuillet notation. 417 x 294 mm. Slightly worn and soiled; minor creasing to area with letters below image; trimmed to plate mark. Credited with 120 original choreographies, most for the theatre but many for social dancing, "[Pécour] was one of the finest dancers working under the celebrated royal choreographer Pierre Beauchamp. He is said in one source to have made his début as a dancer in a repeat performance of Lully's Cadmus et Hermione in 1674. When, on Lully's death in 1687, Beauchamp left the Opéra, Pécour was appointed in his place. He gave up dancing in about 1703 but he held the post of ballet-master and choreographer at the Opéra until his death. His tutelage produced such outstanding dancers as La Fontaine, Subligny, Guiot, Prevost and Menese among the women and Blondy, Ballon, Dumoulin and Marcel among the men. He is credited with changing the 'S' figure of the Minuet to a 'Z', an innovation that helped keep the dancers in a proper relationship to each other and to the figure." He was also amongst the commissioners responsible for the building of fifty new churches in London, and a leading figure in church politics of the early 18th century. Stanhope also founded the Stanhope School in 1715. George was born on 5 March 1660 at Hartshorne, near Swadlincote in south Derbyshire, son of Thomas Stanhope, rector of Hartshorne, Derbyshire,[2] vicar of St Margaret's Church, Leicester, and chaplain to the Earls of Chesterfield and Clare. His grandfather, George Stanhope (d. 1644), was canon and precentor of York from 1631, and was rector of Wheldrake, Yorkshire, and chaplain to James I and Charles I; he was dispossessed during the Commonwealth. The younger George was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland, Eton College and King's College in Cambridge. He graduated in 1681 and obtained his Master of Arts in 1685 and entered into Holy Orders, however he remained three years longer at Cambridge. In 1687 he was appointed curate of Stow cum Quy, Cambridgeshire, and in 1688 he was appointed rector of Tewin, Hertfordshire (Tewin Register), and on 3 August 1689 of Lewisham, Kent, being presented to the latter by Lord Dartmouth, to whose son he was tutor, both then and apparently for five years afterwards. He became a Doctor of Divinity in 1697, and he was appointed chaplain to William and Mary. In 1701 he was appointed Boyle lecturer. In the year following he was presented to the vicarage of Deptford, was reappointed Royal chaplain by Queen Anne, and on 23 March 1704 was made Dean of Canterbury, still retaining Lewisham and Deptford. -wikipedia Spine faded to lighter brown, slight browning to some leaves, else fine

A New and Accurate Description of the Coast of Guinea, divided into the Gold, the Slave, and the Ivory Coasts.

[8]+493+[19 (including 3 of advertisements)] pages with folding frontispiece map by Moll and one of the seven engraved plates. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 4 3/4") bound in full leather. (Cardinall 256; Goldsmiths 4153; Hogg 144b) First English edition. It is fortunate that there is a case for a period picture at the beginning of the eighteenth century, as there is for the purpose the brilliant account of the country's human geography by William Bosman. His work A new and Accurate Description of the Coast of Guinea, was written originally as a series of letters between 1700 and 1702. It was first published in book form in Dutch in 1703 and was followed by an accurate English edition a year later. Bosman left the country of 27 July 1702 after a stay of fourteen years. He was chief factor for the Dutch, and his trading interests took him to most parts of Southern Ghana. Bosman's work is easily the most reliable of the major works on the country produced in the eighteenth century. It thoroughly covered Southern Ghana which was fairly well known to Europeans, but was hardly concerned with Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, the inland sections of Volta Region, and Northern Ghana, about which Bosman and other Europeans only had scraps of information collected from local Ghanaian merchants. It is nevertheless possible to make good the deficiency from other sources. The end of the seventeenth century marked a beginning of change in the development of the country's human geography. After about 1700 a series of struggles occurred among tribes with ambitions for territorial aggrandizement. Such events were known before, but the emergence of the Ashanti nation from the confusion of inter-tribal warfare as the most formidable power in the land acted as a catalyst that completely altered the character, speed and magnitude of the change of events. The human geography of Ghana took a new turn with the rise of the Ashanti. In appearance the countryside was one vast wilderness of uniformly thick forest and savanna vegetation relieved in only a few places by clearings for settlements and farms. But hidden within the forest and the savanna, and never seen by Europeans, were a vast number of rural settlements in which most of the country's population lived. Of the total size of the population no estimate can be made. I could not have been very large in view of the frequent inter-tribal wars since the final decade of the seventeenth century in which large numbers of people lost their lives or fled to neighboring countries. Ahanta, for example, was seriously depopulated through the fatal war with Adom which began in 1690 or 1691 and continued for four years. The few that survived the war in Ahanta sought protection under the Dutch for at Butri, while the greatest part of the land lay wild and uncultivated. Yet before the war the countryside of Ahanta "regaled the eyes with pleasant prospect of numerous villages well peopled." The same was true of the the states of Axim, Ankobra, Abocroe and Egwira which together could provide just over 3,000 armed men. Denkera also was completely sacked by the Ashanti in 1701 after a prolonged deadly war, and the looting, accompanied by indiscriminate slaughter of the Denkera, occupied the victorious Ashanti for fifteen days. Again, the Akwamu, through a series of wars begun towards the close of the seventeenth century, destroyed and caused considerable depopulation of the middle Densu basin and the Accra Plains. Similar reductions in population size must have occurred in Northern Ghana and elsewhere as a result of the many tribal wars. The death rate among those wounded in the wars was also high because of inadequate medical facilities. On the other hand Ashanti, which had suffered no crippling conquests and invasions, must have had a larger population than many areas of the country. Equally devastating were the numerous epidemics that periodically swept over the country. The two most deadly were smallpox and guinea worm disease, which Bosman referred to as "national diseases". Within the last two decades of the seventeenth century thousands of men perished through an epidemic of smallpox. Guinea worm disease, which as far as Bosman could observe appeared to be endemic on the whole coast, also contributed significantly to the high death rate, and there was no certain cure for either of the two diseases. Life expectation appears to have been low. "It is observable", wrote Bosman, "that there are several grey-headed people who look as if they were old, but indeed are not so; this perhaps may be owing to their too early and excessive venery, by which they do enfeeble themselves, that a man of fifty (a good old age here), seized by any sickness, generally leaves this world." Although Bosman's explanation of "too early and excessive venery" may not be valid, it was probably true that the life span for most of the population was short. It is further possible that women lived longer than and outnumbered men because of the latter's frequent involvement in war. Birth as well as infant mortality rate may also have been high. Forming an insignificant proportion of the coastal population were Europeans, who were confined to their forts, an mulattoes, the offspring of marriage or liaison between European men and African women. The mulattoes, who also lived mainly in the coastal settlements, constituted a social problem for they were accepted by neither Europeans nor Africans. Some of them were merchants, but the majority served the Dutch as soldiers. The death rate among the resident European population, which by any estimate could not have numbered more than three hundred, was high because of malaria and sunstroke, against which they had no efficacious remedies. New arrivals on the coast were more prone to malarial attacks and other discomforts, but once they survived their first few months they no longer faced the prospect of certain death through those ailments. Bosman made some shrewd observations on the need for Europeans to adapt their clothing to suit the climate, and to desist from excessive indulgence in drinking alcohol, although he conceded that Europeans at Kormantin and Apam where prone to infection by guinea worm because of the foul water they were obliged to drink there. Condition:New spine with original boards, map rebacked with edge repair and some spotting, some spotting through out with some occasion neat old marginalia. Title with previous owner's name marked out, some edge wear to some of the pages with some soiling else a good copy of a scarce title.

In French, in brown ink on laid paper. With: [PORTRAIT]. [DROUAIS, François-Hubert]. [Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau].[Paris, ca. 1760?]. Folio. Engraved portrait of Duhamel on laid paper.

      - Autograph letter, signed, from the French scientist Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) to the French minister of foreign affairs, Gabriel de Choiseul (1718-1785), Duc de Praslin. Choiseul had sent Duhamel a memoire by Claude-Jules Cousinery (1718-1785), French consul in Syrian (now Lebanese) Tripoli, and asked his opinion of it. Duhamel thanks him for the "excellent memoire de M Couzineri", says it is the best he has seen on the subject and notes Cousinery's "sages reflections". It even helped distract Duhamel from his "terrible siatique" (terrible sciatica). The letter says nothing about the memoire's content, but an early manuscript note on the back adds the year 1762 to the date and and indicates that it belongs under the subject Levant and Barbary. The Histoire de l'Académie Royale des Sciences for the year 1760, published in 1766, pp. 23-24, gives a summary of Cousinery's report on the great Syrian earthquake of 30 October 1759 sent to Duhamel: "nous l'apprenons d'une relation que M. Cousinery (Chacelier du Consulat de Tripoly de Syrie) a envoyée à M. du Hamel".With an early manuscript note on the back of the letter. Formerly folded horizontally and vertically for posting. In very good condition. The portrait is trimmed down to the border, but is also in very good condition.

Paris: Nicolas Pepie, 1700. [xxiii]+433+[13 table] pages with two folding maps of the Marsianes and Guam. Duodecimo (6 1/2 x3 1/4") bound in contemporary full sheep with red label in gilt spine and five raised spine bands, speckled red end pages. (Brunet 28230, Cioranescu 41783) First edition.Charles Le Gobien was a French Jesuit writer, founder of the Lettres édifiantes et curieuses a collection of reports from Jesuit missionaries in China. It is a major source of information for the history of Catholic missions and life in China in those times. Le Gobien was born at Saint-Malo, Brittany. He entered the Society of Jesus on 25 November 1671. As professor of philosophy and especially while procurator of the Franco-Chinese mission, he sought in a series of papers to awaken interest in the work of Christianizing Eastern Asia. In 1697 appeared at Paris his Lettres sur les progréz de la religion à la Chine. Apropos of Chinese Rites controversy, he published among other things Histoire de l'édit de l'empereur de la Chine en faveur de la religion chrétienne avec un éclaircissement sur les honneurs que les Chinois rendent à Confucius et aux morts (Paris, 1698); and in the year 1700: Lettre à un Docteur de la Faculté de Paris sur les propositions déférées en Sorbonne par M. Prioux. Under the same date there appeared in Paris the Histoire des Isles Mariannes nouvellement converties à la religion chrétienne. The second part, translated into Spanish by J. Delgado, is found in the latter's Historia General de Filipinas (Manila, 1892). In 1702 Père Le Gobien published Lettres de quelques missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jésus, écrites de la Chine et des Indes Orientales; this was the beginning of the collection soon to become celebrated under the title of Lettres édifiantes et curieuses écrites des missions étrangéres par quelques missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jésus. The first eight series were by Le Gobien, the latter ones by Fathers Du Halde, Patouillet, Geoffroy, and Maréchal. The collection was printed in thirty-six volumes duodecimo (Paris, 1703–76), and reissued in 1780-81 by Fathers Yves, de Querbeux, and Brotier in twenty-six volumes duodecimo, omitting the prefaces. New editions appeared in 1819, 1829–32, and 1838-43. One abridgment in four volumes octavo, was entitled Panthéon Littéraire, by L. Aimé Martin (1834–43). A partial English translation came out in London in 1714. The publication incited the Austrian Jesuit Stöcklein to undertake his Neuer Welt Bott (about 1720), at first considered merely a translation, but soon an independent and particularly valuable collection (five volumes, folio in forty parts) substantially completing the Lettres Edifiantes. This is a history of the Christian missions in the Marianas or Ladrones Islands in the north-western Pacific, the principal island of which is Guam. Reprinted in the text are several letters from early missionaries (Medina, Clain, Sanvitores, &c.). The Jesuit mission was established there by Diego Luis de Sanvitores. Father Le Gobien never visited the Mariana islands but based his account chiefly on the relations and letters of missionaries sent to him from Rome, Spain, the Netherlands etc. Includes a letter by P. Clain about the discovery of the Caroline Islands.Condition:Rebacked with original spine laid down, provenance: Jesuit College library with old stamps to front free endpaper, half title and title page else about very good.

Internally uniformally toned throughout, with neat marginal notes in what appears to be some sort of shorthand. Perhaps a little tired internally but nevertheless a respectable and durable copy. Marginal wear to frontispiece and prelims. The penultimate lifetime edition with additions and revisions by Locke, a new chapter on the association of ideas and a chapter on Enthusiasm appear here for the first time. Vintage Maps of South America: "Amerique Meridionale" [showing Central America and South America from Isles de Caribes to the "Detroit de Magellan"] - With two additional maps mounted verso: Cambodia, Ceylon and Maledives with India: "Presqu' Isle de L'Indedela le Golfe du Gange" AND Presqu' Isle de L'Inde de la le Golfe du Gange" [with Golf de Siam , Bankok etc.] /

, 1700. [Paris], c. 1700. Original copper engraved maps. 16 cm wide x 13.2 cm high. Mounted on paper. Very good condition. From a wonderful collection of Maps from an old english library (South Shields) - with a tiny library stamp to the mounting paper (The stamp is NOT on the Map). Nicolas de Fer (1646?25 October 1720) was a French cartographer and geographer.nDe Fer was the youngest of three sons of Antoine de Fer, who was also a cartographer. When he was 12, he became the apprentice of Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx, and made his first map, of the Canal du Midi, at the age of 23. After the death of his father in June 1673, his mother Geneviève initially took over the map making company, which had begun to decline. She passed it and the atelier, called Quai de L'Horloge, on to Nicolas in 1687 because of her old age.nDe Fer was so successful at improving the firm that, in 1690, he became the official geographer to Louis, Dauphin of France. With support from the Spanish and French Royal Families, de Fer also became official geographer for Philip V and Louis XIV, the kings of Spain and France, respectively. Because of this, his maps became Bourbon propaganda, endorsing French King Louis XIV. nHis business flourished, producing town plans, atlases, wall maps, and more than 600 sheet maps. He made maps of places in Europe and North America, including New Spain, places fortified by Vauban, the Low Countries, and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1698, de Fer published a map of North America, which included a depiction of beavers building dams near Niagara Falls. Seventeen years later, Herman Moll published a map which plagiarized elements of de Fer's work, particularly the beaver scene. It became known as the "Beaver map". De Fer became the official geographer for His Catholic Majesty in 1720. Two of his sons-in-law, Guillaume Danet and Jaques-François Bénard, continued the company after de Fer's death on 25 October of that year until around 1760.n(Wikipedia)nn

Tabulae Manuales Logarithmicae ad Calculum Astronomicum, in specie Tabb. Rudolphinarum compendiose tractandum mire utiles. Ob defectum prioris Editionis Saganensis multum hactenus desideratae. Quibus accessit in hac Editione Introductio nova curante Joh. Casp. Eisenschmid.

Strasbourg: Johannes Pastorius for Theodor Lerse, 1700. Rare second edition (the first obtainable edition) of the logarithmic tables used in calculating the celebrated Rudolphine Tables. Caspar records only one copy of the first edition, published in Sagan in 1631, and that defective, in the University Library of Königsberg. Jacob Bartsch (1600-1633) was Kepler's son-in-law. After Kepler died in 1630, Bartsch decided that Kepler's logarithms should be made available in a less expensive form than the Rudolphine Tables published in 1627 (the first work to introduce logarithms into the field of astronomy). The intention was to fund the printing by collecting the salery owned owed to Kepler. However, due to failure of his journey to Vienna to collect the money, the printing was stopped and the distribution of the 1631 edition was practically nil. This second edition was brought out by John Caspar Eisenschmid in 1700 and in his introduction he gives a detailed account of the fate of the first edition. This second edition is by no means a common book on the market (ABPC lists only two copies in the past fifty years; 1971 and 1984). A very fine copy, complete with the errata leaf. Caspar 99; Erwin Tomash Library on the History of Computing K-28; Houzeau and Lancaster 12757; Lalande p.338. Six parts in one volume. 8vo: 154 x 92 mm. Fine contemporary vellum with the original clasps intact. Pp. 40, (276), (2:errata). Title page with some very light spotting, otherwise fine and clean throughout.

FineCats was a Dutch statesman and writer of emblem books, a type of popular, seventeenth-century literature consisting of woodcuts or engravings accompanied by didactic verses pointing a moral or presenting an ethical concern often related to love and marriage. (Dutch artists of the Golden Age, including Vermeer, used such books as inspiration for motifs in their paintings and prints.) The sources upon which Cats draws for this combination of emblem literature and love poetry are chiefly the Bible and the classics and occasionally Boccaccio and Cervantes. His first book, Sinne-en minnebeelden ("Portraits of Morality and Love") contained 96 emblematic engravings with text in Dutch, Latin, and French, each emblem with a threefold interpretation, expressing what were for Cats the three elements of human life: love, society, and religion. Perhaps his most famous emblem book, written in a more homely style than his earlier works, is Spiegel van den ouden en nieuwen tyt ("Mirror of Old and New Times"), with 128 emblematical engravings accompanied by quotations, many of which have become household sayings. Two other works?Houwelyk ('Marriage') and Trou-ringh ('Wedding Ring'), with 59 plates?are rhymed dissertations on marriage and conjugal fidelity. Finally, in one of his last books, Ouderdom, buyten-leven en hof-gedachten ("Old Age, Country Life, and Garden Thoughts"), with 27 plates, Cats writes movingly about his declining years.

***** First edition. "Amman's method of instructing the deaf-mutes. He was one of the most successful of all teachers in this sphere." Garrison-Morton 3353. In-12. [158 x 94 mm] Collation : (24), 120 pp., 1 tableau h.-t. Cartonnage rose de l'époque.
