This Actuall Survey of London, Westminster & Southwark is Humbly Dedicated to Ye Ld Mayor & Court of Aldermen. By Ro. Morden, Phil. Lea, Chr. Browne.

Sold by Philip Lea at the Atlas & Hercules in Cheapside and by Christopher Browne at the Globe the west end of St. Paul?Äôs,, London, 1700 - Morden and Lea's large and attractive plan of London and the surrounding country 655 by 1030mm (25.75 by 40.5 inches). Engraved plan on two sheets joined, extending north to south from St Pancras to Southwark, and from west to east from Arlington House (Buckingham Palace) to Stepney, a few old folds reinforced, a few tears skilfully repaired, and some minor dampstaining to banner. Howgego 42 (2). The most important public buildings are shown in elevation. Amongst them are some notable lost palaces, including Arlington House, on the present day site of Buckingham Palace. The house, built in 1675, was the residence of Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington. The freehold for the property would be sold to the Duke of Buckingham in 1702. Another palace of note is Montague House, home of the 1st Duke of Montague. It was situated on Great Russell Street, which at the time backed on to fields, and in 1759 was sold to the Trustees of the British Museum. The house would be demolished in the 1840s to make way for the modern day building. A great deal of the outlying area of the map is a patchwork of fields dotted with hamlets, such as Marylebone, St Pancras, and Cambridge Heath. Below the plan are tables giving names of the public offices, wards, and parishes; which before the Fire numbered 97 but only 62 after. There is also information on the halls and companies, markets, inns of court, prisons, palaces, and public buildings. The Thames is depicted teeming with sailing vessels, barges and watermen.Scale: 7 1/2 inches to 1 statute mile.

London for Awnsham and John Churchil 1700 - The fourth edition, with a large number of additions. With the engraved portrait frontispiece of John Locke. Folio, full contemporary paneled calf, expertly rebacked to correct period style with tall raised bands double-ruled in gilt and a brown morocco label gilt ruled and lettered. [39], 438, [index, errata] pp. A very handsome copy, crisp and in fine order inside and out, pastedown and free-fly renewed with proper handmade paper, the binding very attractive, sturdy and sound. A VERY EARLY PRINTING WITH THE PORTRAIT, AND A VERY HANDSOME COPY OF LOCKE’S GREAT ESSAY, the "first attempt on a great scale, and in the Baconian spirit, to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge, when confronted with God and the universe" (EB). This was the last edition to be published in Locke’s lifetime. The fourth edition contains all of the additions of the previous three editions, including the portrait and the index. The principal additions include an epistle to the reader on Locke’s terminology and there are two wholly new chapters. The first on the association of ideas (book II, chapter XXXII) and the second being on enthusiasm (book IV, Chapter XIX). There are also numerous minor additions and corrections. Locke's ESSAY served as the most concrete manifestation of a new empiricist spirit, in contrast to the metaphysical philosophies of Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz. Locke was inspired to write the ESSAY in 1671 after a philosophical discussion with friends in which he realized that no progress could be made before they had examined the mind's capacities and seen "what objects our understandings were, or were not, fitted to deal with" (from the "Epistle to the Reader"). "Other philosophers had reflected on and written about human knowledge. But Locke was the first philosopher to devote his main work to an inquiry into human understanding, its scope and its limits. And we can say that the prominent place occupied in modern philosophy by the theory of knowledge is in large measure due to him." (Copleston, A HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY). Locke's influence was widespread and was not strictly limited to pure philosophical inquiry. In America his emphasis on rational thought versus "enthusiasm" provided ammunition and philosophical grounding to opponents of the revivalist and itinerant preachers of the Great Awakening, and in the nineteenth century the "nature versus nurture" thesis was employed by Unitarians and other anti-Calvinist factions to argue that human nature was improvable through nurture and self-culture rather than corrupt beyond hope without conversion through a special act of divine grace. In England Locke had a strong influence on the literature of the Augustan Age, Sterne, Addison, and the members of the Scriblerus Club all acknowledging the currency of his ideas. "The art of education, political thought, theology and philosophy, especially in Britain, France, and America, long bore the stamp of the ESSAY, or of reaction against it" (Fraser, quoted in Grolier). Locke's ESSAY has passed through more editions than any classic in modern philosophical literature and remains a cornerstone in the history of human thought. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Mappe-Monde Drésse sur les Observations de Mrs. de l'Academie Royal des Sciences et quelques autres sur les memoires les pus recens

Chez l'Auteur Rue des Canettes pres de St. Sulpice, Paris 1700 - The rare first state of the celebrated world map by De l'Isle"one of the foremost cartographer's of the age" (Shirley) This highly important map proved to be one of the most influential world maps of its time, and is present here in the rare first state. De L'Isle was a much esteemed figure who, after being tutored by the great Jean-Dominique Cassini, became the geographer to the French Academy of Sciences in 1702, and then 'Premier Géographe' to Louis XV in 1718. Rodney Shirley notes that "De L'Isle's work is distinguished by its scientific basis, the minute care taken in all departments, constant revision, and personal integrity". In this map of the world, De l'Isle was among the first cartographers to re-establish California's true form as a peninsula, to give more or less accurate configurations to all five Great Lakes, and to show the full extent of the Mississippi. He was also one of the first to correct the attenuated form of the Mediterranean Sea. In fusing New Guinea and Australia, he followed William Dampier's presumed personal survey, but resisted the temptation to join Tasmania and New Zealand to Australia, an error soon to be popular. Curiously, the tip of South America is shown to curve sharply into the Pacific, a detail conspicuously amended in subsequent states of the map. The map also features the tracks of important circumnavigators including Magellan, Mendaña, Dampier, Van Noort, Le Maire & Schouten and the antipodean tracks of Abel Tasman. Shirley The Mapping of the World: Early Printed World Maps 1472-1700 , 603, plate 416; Wagner Cartography of the Pacific Northwest, 461. Copper-engraved map, hand-coloured in outline. Good condition, cut to just within the plate mark, with expert repairs to margins and central fold. Sheet size: 17 1/8 x 26 1/8 inches.

Cfr. LOZZI C., "Biblioteca istorica della antica e nuova Italia [.]", vol. Rebacked many years ago, with newer leather showing at the spine ends and joints and dark spotting to the original leather suggestive of an acid-wash technique. "Arts as well as Habits, are subject to that Fate of being in Mode, as might be instanced in several, besides this curious Art of Horti culture: which never declines when once it is become National, only varies in Form, according to the several temporary Humours of such that place their Oblectations in it."         Selecta Sacra. Libri Quinque. Cum Indicibus locupletissimis, & Tabulis Aeneis elegantissimis

Henricum Wetstenium, Amsterdam 1700 - Octavo. 53, [11], 805, [111]pp. Original blind stamped vellum with handwritten lettering on spine. Additional engraved title page. Title page in red and black lettering. Printer's device on title page. Remarkable work by Johannes Braun (1628-1708) the renowned professor of theology and Hebrew at the university of Groningen. A disciple of the Dutch Christian Hebraist Johannes Coccejus in theology, Braun adhered to Cartesianism in philosophical matters, publishing several scholarly, didactic and polemic works on the matter. He interacted with Descartes' chief intellectual heirs, Gottfried Leibniz and Benedict Spinoza. Braun corresponded was Leibniz. He knew at least some of Spinoza's works, and rejected the latter's alleged atheism. Braun exemplifies the early Conservative Enlightenment, which strove to integrate the new philosophy into a traditional orthodox theological structure. For him Cartesianism was a tool in a rationalist approach to theology and (particularly) in demarcating theology from philosophy. In this respect, his position is exemplary for the adaptations taking place in institutional philosophy around 1700. This book is profusely illustrated with 13 fine engravings (including 3 folding). Includes one plate showing the Molach. Spine and edges of binding darkened. Head of spine repaired. Front hinge starting. Minor browning and foxing along paper margin. Folding engraving facing page 225 repaired. Text in Latin with some Hebrew throughout. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+ condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        1 "Ilex Aquifolium/Houx Commun"

      - A detailed Hand-colored stipple engraving by Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-82) From his sweeping book Traite des Arbres Fruitiers Nouvelle edition by Pierre Jean Francois Turpin and Pierre-Antoine Poiteau which was published in Paris in 1807-35. Overall this print measures 10.5"x17”. This piece has no restoration and full margins. One of the most splendid books on fruit ever produced, Traite des Arbres Fruitiers was the result of the collaboration of two life-long friends, Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840) and Pierre-Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854). The son of a poor artisan, Turpin was largely self-taught but had studied the basic elements of drawing in the art school of his hometown, Vire. At 19, after entering the military five years prior, Turpin was sent to San Domingo in the West Indies where he met the young botanist, and student of the great botanist Pierre-Antoine Poiteau, whom was a student of the great botanical artist Pierre Joseph Redoute. This inspired in Turpin an enthusiasm for natural history. Both Turpin and Poiteau were outstanding botanical artists of the “Redoute” style, and utilized the same techniques of hand-colored stipple engraving that Redoute had devised. The plates were printed by Langlois, a great master of printing who had supervised much of Redoute’s work. Poiteau wrote all of the text to accompany the illustrations. The work covers almonds, peaches and nectarines, apricots and greengages, plums, grapes, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries, currants, pears (over 100 varieties), apples, hazelnuts, walnuts, figs, and even avocados. Only nine plates illustrate citrus fruit, as citrus fruits had been comprehensively dealt with in Poiteau and Risso’s publication Histoire Naturelle des Orangers (1818-22). This ‘new edition’ was in fact a completely new work, loosely based on Henri Loius Duhamel du Monceau’s Traité des Arbres Fruitiers, published in 1768. Duhamel du Monceau, a French botanist, had the artists Claude Aubriet (ca. 1665-1747) and Madeleine Basseporte (1701-80) illustrate the fruit species to be included in the published work. Overall this print is in very good condition with some foxing and staining, and darker staining along edges of margins.
