        William Rand 1745-46 AMS

      - Rand, William (1700-1779). Eminent minister at Kingston, Mass., from 1746 until his death in 1779. He had a tremendous zeal for the ministry and preached often at ordinations. Today he is perhaps best remembered as a friendly and earnestly evangelical, but serious, critic of Jonathan Edwards, especially of the more dramatic physical and emotional phenomena of the Northampton revival.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Frankfort & Leipzig: Andreas Otto, 1700. - [1],[10],140pp. 12mo. Modern brown crushed morocco. Very good. Scarce first edition of an important early source on the history of Pennsylvania, written by the founder of Germantown. Pastorius, born in Germany in 1651, formed an acquaintance with William Penn, became a Quaker and helped organize the Frankfort Land Company. Securing 15,000 acres of land in Pennsylvania, he emigrated in 1683 and soon thereafter layed out Germantown, of which he was the principal founder. This epistolary work includes letters written from Pennsylvania to his father describing the region, including its form of government and providing advice to emigrants. In the rear of the work is a printing in German of William Penn's LETTER TO THE COMMITTEE OF THE FREE SOCIETY OF TRADERS. Pastorius, Winsor writes, was "the most active and intelligent of the first German settlers" and his work "is of great interest, as it contains the views of one thoroughly identified with the German movement to America" (Winsor). This work stands at the beginning a the "Pennsylvania Dutch" culture of Pennsylvania, still a vibrant culture today. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 700/212. HOWES P115, "b." SABIN 59028. WINSOR III:502.

London: Printed for Matt. Gillyflower 1700. . First collected edition, 8vo, (ii), 21, (1), 84, (vi), 97, (1), 42, (ii), 30, 16, (ii), 44, (ii), 21, (1, ii), 6, (4) pp. Frontispiece, one leaf with a closed tear and slight loss the outer margin, not affecting text, some browning, 2 ink stamps to title, contemporary inscription to fly leaf, paste downs taken from a contemporary theological work, later small Library label to front paste down. Contemporary panelled calf, blind triple rules and corner decorations, some light wear, neatly rebacked. An advisor to three Kings in his lifetime, Halifax was involved in many of the momentous events that affected England in the second half of the eighteenth century. Elevated to the peerage and sent on a diplomatic mission to France by Charles II, he was made Lord Privy Seal under William III. Two different tracts, both entitled “A Letter to a Dissenter”, are present. The second, “...from his Friend at the Hague...”, 16 pp, collates as part of the original volume but is by Daniel Defoe, while Halifax’s own piece under the same title, 30 pp, has been inserted. Moore’s Checklist of the Writings of Daniel Defoe, 5, notes this confusion. The “Funeral Poem” to Halifax’s memory at the beginning of the volume is by the playwright Elkanah Settle. Wing H315.

        An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding

London; Awnsham and John Churchil at The Black Swan. 1700, 1700. Fourth Edition. 4to. Bound in recent full panelled calf with red title label. Very handsome. Internally uniformally toned throughout, with neat marginal notes in what appears to be some sort of shorthand. Perhaps a little tired internally but nevertheless a respectable and durable copy. Marginal wear to frontispiece and prelims. The penultimate lifetime edition with additions and revisions by Locke, a new chapter on the association of ideas and a chapter on Enthusiasm appear here for the first time. Often regarded as the birthplace of experimental psychology, this is an important and influential work in an attractive modern binding.

Carte General de la Caroline. Dresse sur les Memoires le plus Nouveaux par le Sieua [sic.] S**

Amsterdam: P. Mortier, 1700. A fine copy of the first map of the Carolinas to be printed outside of England, including an inset of Charleston with the names and positions of early plantations along the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, present here in the first state This is the first map of the Carolinas to be printed outside of England, and was included as part of Pierre Mortier's Suite de Neptune François , published in Amsterdam in 1700, and often incorrectly attributed to Nicolas Sanson. It is directly derived from the extremely rare A New Map of Carolina of 1685 by John Thornton, Robert Morden and Philip Lea. All topographical details are identical to those of its antecedent, however most of the place names have been Gallicized. Also, "The table of settlers" has been omitted in favour of the title caption. Amusingly a "Charle Ville ou Charles Towne" appears written in large letters near Cape Fear, while the actual Charles Towne is labeled in small letters further down the coast. The present map includes an inset detail of Charleston and the Cooper and Ashley Rivers with the names and positions of various early plantations marked along their banks. 'Carolina was established in 1663 when Charles II granted the province to eight favorites, known as the Lord Proprietors, who had helped him regain the throne of England. The original grant included the territory between the 31st degree to 36 1/2 degrees north latitude, from Jekyll Island, Georgia, to Curritiuck Inlet, North Carolina. Two years later, the tract was enlarged to include the land between the 29th and the 31st degrees north latitude, thus adding a large portion of Florida. The grant extended west to the Pacific Ocean' ( Degrees of Latitude , p.93). Burden, The Mapping of North America II, 767; Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps , 120; Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici IV, M.Mor 7-33. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour.

La Manche, ou le Canal, entre la France et Angleterre

Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier., c. 1700. Size: 525 × 635 mm. Copperplate engraving with original outline colour. Slight water staining to lower border, minor toning and soiling , otherwise in very good condition An extremely attractive and decorative map of The English Channel, showing the entire south coast of England and the north western regions of France - from Nantes to Bruges. The map is littered with compass roses and rhumb lines, and features a large and very ornate title cartouche in the lower right corner, with horses, cherubs, soldiers and King Neptune seated in his chariot. There is plenty of detail within the body of the map, especially along coastal areas. A very fine map indeed.
