Capilettera ornati a racemi e fregi tipografici silografati. Cfr. LOZZI C., "Biblioteca istorica della antica e nuova Italia [.]", vol. I, p. 287 num. 1613 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Rebacked many years ago, with newer leather showing at the spine ends and joints and dark spotting to the original leather suggestive of an acid-wash technique. Previous owner's neat ink handwriting to front endpapers and very slightly to rpd, minor soiling to textblock and scattered pgs. Interior otherwise remarkably clean and bright. "Arts as well as Habits, are subject to that Fate of being in Mode, as might be instanced in several, besides this curious Art of Horti culture: which never declines when once it is become National, only varies in Form, according to the several temporary Humours of such that place their Oblectations in it."         Selecta Sacra. Libri Quinque. Cum Indicibus locupletissimis, & Tabulis Aeneis elegantissimis

Henricum Wetstenium, Amsterdam 1700 - Octavo. 53, [11], 805, [111]pp. Original blind stamped vellum with handwritten lettering on spine. Additional engraved title page. Title page in red and black lettering. Printer's device on title page. Remarkable work by Johannes Braun (1628-1708) the renowned professor of theology and Hebrew at the university of Groningen. A disciple of the Dutch Christian Hebraist Johannes Coccejus in theology, Braun adhered to Cartesianism in philosophical matters, publishing several scholarly, didactic and polemic works on the matter. He interacted with Descartes' chief intellectual heirs, Gottfried Leibniz and Benedict Spinoza. Braun corresponded was Leibniz. He knew at least some of Spinoza's works, and rejected the latter's alleged atheism. Braun exemplifies the early Conservative Enlightenment, which strove to integrate the new philosophy into a traditional orthodox theological structure. For him Cartesianism was a tool in a rationalist approach to theology and (particularly) in demarcating theology from philosophy. In this respect, his position is exemplary for the adaptations taking place in institutional philosophy around 1700. This book is profusely illustrated with 13 fine engravings (including 3 folding). Includes one plate showing the Molach. Spine and edges of binding darkened. Head of spine repaired. Front hinge starting. Minor browning and foxing along paper margin. Folding engraving facing page 225 repaired. Text in Latin with some Hebrew throughout. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+ condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        1 "Ilex Aquifolium/Houx Commun"

      - A detailed Hand-colored stipple engraving by Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-82) From his sweeping book Traite des Arbres Fruitiers Nouvelle edition by Pierre Jean Francois Turpin and Pierre-Antoine Poiteau which was published in Paris in 1807-35. Overall this print measures 10.5"x17”. This piece has no restoration and full margins. One of the most splendid books on fruit ever produced, Traite des Arbres Fruitiers was the result of the collaboration of two life-long friends, Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840) and Pierre-Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854). The son of a poor artisan, Turpin was largely self-taught but had studied the basic elements of drawing in the art school of his hometown, Vire. At 19, after entering the military five years prior, Turpin was sent to San Domingo in the West Indies where he met the young botanist, and student of the great botanist Pierre-Antoine Poiteau, whom was a student of the great botanical artist Pierre Joseph Redoute. This inspired in Turpin an enthusiasm for natural history. Both Turpin and Poiteau were outstanding botanical artists of the “Redoute” style, and utilized the same techniques of hand-colored stipple engraving that Redoute had devised. The plates were printed by Langlois, a great master of printing who had supervised much of Redoute’s work. Poiteau wrote all of the text to accompany the illustrations. The work covers almonds, peaches and nectarines, apricots and greengages, plums, grapes, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries, currants, pears (over 100 varieties), apples, hazelnuts, walnuts, figs, and even avocados. Only nine plates illustrate citrus fruit, as citrus fruits had been comprehensively dealt with in Poiteau and Risso’s publication Histoire Naturelle des Orangers (1818-22). This ‘new edition’ was in fact a completely new work, loosely based on Henri Loius Duhamel du Monceau’s Traité des Arbres Fruitiers, published in 1768. Duhamel du Monceau, a French botanist, had the artists Claude Aubriet (ca. 1665-1747) and Madeleine Basseporte (1701-80) illustrate the fruit species to be included in the published work. Overall this print is in very good condition with some foxing and staining, and darker staining along edges of margins.

Bound in leather with blind embossed detailIn Latin and GreekHugo Grotius, also known as Huig de Groot or Hugo de Groot, (1583 1645) worked as a jurist in the Dutch Republic. With Francisco de Vitoria and Alberico Gentili he laid the foundations for international law, based on natural law. He was also a philosopher, theologian, Christian apologist, playwright, and poet. While in Paris from 1621, Grotius set about rendering into Latin prose a work which he had compiled in prison, providing rudimentary yet systematic arguments for the truth of Christianity. (Showcasing Grotius' skill as a poet, the earlier Dutch version of the work, Bewijs van den waren Godsdienst (pub. 1622), was written entirely in didactic verse. ) The Latin work was first published in 1627 as De veritate religionis Christianae.         Novum Testamentum Hebraeo-Teutonicum

Michaelis Gottschalckii (Michael Gottschack), Francofurti ad Oderam (Frankfurt an der Oder) 1700 - Octavo. Original full calf. Title page in Yiddish and Latin. Vignette on title page. Decorative head-, tailpieces, and initials. First complete printing of the New Testament in Yiddish. The first effort at a Yiddish translation of the New Testament seems to be that of Johann Harzuge, a convert. His version (Cracow, 1540), which does not include Revelations, follows Luther's German version and is printed in Rashi script. The next attempt at a Yiddish NT (Strassburg, 1592) was that of Elias Schadeus, who translated only five books, also following Luther. Christian Moeller translated all of the NT into Yiddish (this copy). Binding darkened and rubbed along edges. Moderate abrasion on front cover. Bookplate on inside of front cover (London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst The Jews). Free front endpaper inscribed by previous owner, and dated 1819. Sporadic browning throughout. Fly leaf at rear partly chipped. Text in Yiddish. Binding in overall fair, interior in good to good+ condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Sir Thodore Turquet de Mayerne (September 28, 1573 March 22, 1654 or 1655) was a Swiss-born physician who treated kings of France and England and was a follower of Paracelsus making considerable headway. Mayerne's estate included copious amount of medical manuscripts, including detailed notes about his patients, most of it in Latin and French; his patients ranged from John Donne to Oliver Cromwell. His papers are kept in the Royal College of Physicians. His influence on the administration of medicine - including the first suggestion of socialized medicine in England, and the standardisation of chemical cures, has been widely recognised.         MORE WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD: OR, THE WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD, DISPLAY'D IN FIVE PARTS.

London: Printed for Nath. Hillar., 1700. - [12],156pp. Small quarto. Modern blue polished calf, tooled in gilt, spine gilt extra. Faint ink stamp on verso of titlepage. Minor scattered foxing and toning. Very good. This well reasoned castigation of the proceedings of the courts in Massachusetts was written by Robert Calef, a Boston merchant, in response to Cotton Mather's WONDERS OF THE INVISIBLE WORLD, wherein Mather sets forth his account of the supposed cases of witchcraft in Massachusetts. Calef attacks Mather personally, as well as the hysteria engendered by the witch scare. The first copies of this book to reach Boston were supposedly burned, and it historically has been a very rare piece of colonial Americana. SABIN 9926. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 700/36. HOWES C25, "b."         America Aurea Pars Alter Mundi Auctoribus

Amsterdam 1700 - Highly decorative map of North and South America showing California as an island and here with full period hand colouring. This decorative map by the Valk brothers is after a similar map by Carol Allard, first published circa 1696. Cartographically, both Allard and the Valks borrow heavily from the De Wit map of 1675, naming the Great Lakes, showing California as an island and with a Terra Esonis and Fretum Anian in the northwest. Interestingly, the Valks here re-issue the first state of Allard's map, i.e. before the re-engraving of the western Great Lakes and the Mississippi River (based on Hennepin's mapping). In addition, the lower left corner of the cartouche is left blank, whereas in subsequent issues of the Allard map, an inset of New Zealand appears. In the present issue, there are no toponyms on Terra Esonis and the South Pacific is without New Guinea. Cf. Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 724 (discussing the map under the entry for Allard); Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast, 496; Tooley, "California as an Island," 68 in Tooley, The Mapping of America ; McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island , 176. Copper-engraved map, full period hand-colouring.

Amsterdam, Sumptibus Huguetanorum, 1700. Quarto. [xxx]596, [iv]96 + [22]pp. Title in red and black. Copper-engraved frontispiece, title emblem, and headpiece to text. A handsome edition, "in usum delphini." A beautiful copy, internally very clean, in contemporary vellum boards with blind-stamped cartouche. Marcus Verrius Flaccus (ca. 55 BC - ca. 20 AD) the teacher of the Emperor Augustus' grandsons, completed an encyclopedic dictionary ("On the Meaning of Words"), the contents of which are known today only from a lengthy summary written about 150 years later by Sextus Pompeius Festus. Festus' work, although only the second half of the alphabet survives, contains a wealth of information on life under Augustus. Theodore Lyman Jr.'s copy.

There were five editions, some of which were translated into French or German" (Bromley). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

Text, (2) weiße Bl. mit einer schriftl. Notiz aus dem 19. Jahrhundert; Schriftspiegel ca. 26 x 16,5 cm, einspaltig, in sehr gut lesbarer, nahezu kalligraphischer Reinschrift. Olivier 2566 -4). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

"The term 'artificial', as used here, refers to clocks made by human skill as opposed to sundials or time-tellers dependent on the heavens. The work is one of the first attempts to give practical help to a working clockmaker and also to record a history of horology. There were five editions, some of which were translated into French or German" (Bromley). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
