Several essays in political arithmetick: the titles of which follow in the ensuing pages.

London, Clavel and Peacock, 1699. 8vo. Nice contemporary full calf, rectangular blindtooled frames and central panel "mirror" on covers, Cambridge-style binding. Five raised bands with red leather title-label with gilt lettering to spine. Hinges weak. Spine rubbed and genral wear to extremities. Library label pasted on to pasted down front free end-paper. Internally fine and clean - A fine copy. Pp. (8), 5-103, (2), 105-139, (21), 161-276.. The exceedingly rare first printing (reprinted in 1711 and 1755) of this collection of Petty's essays on demography and economics containing his landmark work "Political Arithmetick", first published in 1690, in which he anticipated many of the ideas later proposed by the classical economists: The division of labor and the general advantage of free trade. By stating that he sought to express himself in "Number, Weight or Measure" - quantitative data - he is regarded as being one of the very earliest statisticians. Most of Petty works concerning economics and demography were published posthumously, the present collection of essays - being the first collected edition - proved especially important in the spread of Petty's ideas on these subjects. "The scope of Petty's interests and scale of his achievements were enlarged after his death: first, with the publication of his Political Arithmetic in 1690 and Political Anatomy in 1691, and then of other papers. This process has still to be completed. The writings, if sometimes repetitive and frequently utopian, provide abundant detail of the physical and human geography of seventeenth-century Ireland and England. They also show Petty's formidable intellectual prowess, especially as the originator of statistical analysis under the name of political arithmetic. What Petty wrote, about both Ireland and England, blended exact statistical information with fanciful projections. True to his belief in the empirical method, learned on the continent early in the 1640s, he aimed to end idle speculation by expressing all in 'number, weight and measure'. This statistical precision certainly added to the novelty and authority of The Political. Arithmetic and Anatomy of Ireland. The precision owed much to his access to the cadastral data which had been collected under his own auspices during the down survey, and later when poll and hearth taxes were levied in Ireland and as bills of mortality enumerated and classified the dead both in London and Dublin." (ODNB)."Petty (1623-87) was a self-made man - physician, surgeon, mathematician, theoretical engineer, member of parliament, public servant, and businessman - one of those vital people who make a success of almost everything they touch, even of their failures. Though he paid the price of his versatility, his is one of the great names in the history of economics. [...]By Political Arithmetick we mean the art of reasoning by figures upon things relating to government. The art itself is undoubtedly very ancient... [But Petty] first gave it that name and brought it into rules and methods." (Schumpeter). "Petty's importance for 17th-century culture is undeniable. His search for an 'objective' science contributes to the paradigm shift that was taking place at the time. In this regard his part in the creation of the Royal Society went hand in hand with his development of the new science of 'political arithmetick'. [...] His influence on subsequent developments was decisive: immediate followers (for example, Gregory King and Charles Davenant) definitively established the sciences of demography and economic statistics, while Petty's conceptual framework, adopted by Cantillon, exerted a decisive influence on the development of Quesnay's economic thinking. Petty's relevance for the development of Classical political economy is emphasized by Karl Marx, who considers Petty to be the 'Founder of Classical political economy'". (New Palgrave). The essays included in this volume are (each essay with a title page in both English and French):An essay concerning the multiplication of mankind (1698) Further observations upon the Dublin bills (1698) Two essays in political arithmetic (1699) Observations upon the cities of London and Rome (1699) Five essays in political arithmetic (1699) Political arithmetick, or a discourse concerning the extent and value of lands (1699).Garrison-Morton 1688Norman 1688Mattioli 2799Katalog der Carl Menger=Bibliothek 500Wing P-1937

In 1692 he was nominated first Boyle lecturer (named after scientist Robert Boyle). He then delivered a series of sermons trying to refute Thomas Hobbes and atheism. In particular, the lectures tried to show how the recent work in physics by Sir Isaac Newton offered proof of God’s existence. Bentley even corresponded with Newton on the subject. Originally the sermons were printed separately - several editions of each being issued. In 1693 the tracts were first collected together under the present title with separate paginations. The so-called "fourth edition" of 1699 is advertised as "corrected" and it displays continuous pagination. [ESTC R21357; Wing B1931]. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[28], 123, [1, errata], 1072; [2], 1223, [1]pp. Engraved title & 125 engraved plates (most full-page, a few included in the text). Geneva: ChouÃŽt & Ritter, 1699. 2 vols. 355 x 217 mm. Calf gilt c. 1699, worn, discolored, leather of hinges split but covers attached. Some foxing and toning, especially to the plates, tear in plate XCVI, some plate fore-edges frayed.

Second edition, containing significant additions and revisions to this "extraordinary storehouse of seventeenth century anatomical works" (Russell 524), which was first published in 1685. The impressive collection, with its striking engraved title and over one hundred plates based on the original sources, gathers in a single work the most important discoveries of the seventeenth century, the period which laid the foundation for modern anatomy and physiology. These include the writings of Harvey, Willis, Lower, Malpighi, Vieussens, Swammerdam, de Graaf, and Bartholin, to name just some. In the case of William Harvey, the collection of his writings in LeClerc and Manget precedes his Opera Omnia published in England in the eighteenth century.

LeClerc is known as "the father of the history of medicine" for his Histoire de la Medecine published first in 1696 and expanded in subsequent editions (see G-M 6379); however, he was most appreciated by his contemporaries for his beautifully produced massive digests of the burgeoning field of modern medical literature. O. O., Joachim Schmedtgen, 1699.. 12 Bl., 104, 112, 142, 110, 84 S., 2 Bl.

Engraved frontis. & 65 finely engraved full-page illus. in the text. Title printed in red & black. 12 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 542 pp. 4to, early 18th cent. French red morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, gilt fleurons in each corner, spine gilt. Paris: chez la Veuve & J.B. Coignard, fils, 1699. "The Principes, first published in 1676, is a handbook of the principles and practices of the three arts of architecture, sculpture, and painting. By far the most important section is that on architecture. The author states that the book is written for the general public: its purpose is to do away with craft "secrets" and "mysteries," to make the many crafts associated with the arts intelligible to the layman, and by implication to give these crafts some uniformity. It is not only an early treatise written for the layman, but one of a group of treatises emphasizing practicality over principles... "The fact that the author of the book was a person of considerable distinction in academic and court circles, and that the work was dedicated to Colbert's son, then surintendant des bâtiments, suggests political interest in a systematization of the techniques as well as the products of the crafts. However, Félibien's approach to his subject is as personal as it may be official. It is in marked contrast to the selective and exclusive approach of the architectural treatises which preceded it, and which focused on principles of design rather than of execution, and to the handbooks, which were concerned with a single craft, and with drawing and measuring rather than with tools. The contents of this work are unique, although they would be imitated immediately in England by Joseph Moxon... "Félibien began his project with a proposal to collect trade terms in a dictionary. He soon realized that since his dictionary was intended to instruct, he would need to include a description of each trade and an essay on the principles of that art with which the trade was associated. In addition, he found it necessary to turn to craftsmen for explanations of their various trades, as well as to written authorities... "The first section, on architecture, is in part a development of theoretical material from earlier architectural treatises. Chapter 1 is concerned with the history of architecture. Here Félibien considers not only the conventional view of architecture as a series of monuments that will confirm the importance of the reign of the king (Louis XIV), but also sees it as an older craft tradition, referred to by Philibert de L'Orme and Alexandre Francine, in which God is the sovereign Architect of the Universe, and geometry is emphasized as a fundamental discipline. Chapters 2 through 10 are devoted to an exposition of the orders. These are still close to the view of Fréart de Chambray and Abraham Bosse, that the Ancients established a single interpretation for each of the orders, and that each had its special beauty; the Moderns, on the other hand, differed among each other in their solution to the problem of the proportions of the orders. Like Fréart, he ranks Palladio first among the Moderns... "But Félibien, despite the preferential place and attention he gives to the orders in his introduction, states that priority in architecture should be given to siting, materials, and use; only after these are satisfied should character and the elements of beauty, which he defines as the relation of parts, just proportions, and symmetry, be considered. Chapter 11 is devoted to the types of building, 12 to materials, 13 to military engineering, and 14 through 22 to the trades (crafts). Following this introduction are engraved illustrations of the tools of each trade, with a list of the names of each tool on the facing page... "The sections on sculpture and painting repeat this format, but not the size nor the scope of the architectural section. The dictionary, which had been proposed as the original project, forms the second part of the work... "The Principes achieved instant popularity; it was reprinted in 1690, 1697, and 1699. In 1774 it still held sufficient authority that J.B. Quélard would base a part of his Encylopédia on it."The Mark J. Millard Architectural Collection. Volume I. French Books Sixteenth through Nineteenth Centuries, 71. A very fine copy. This is the 1699 reissue of the 1697 third edition, being identical apart from the new title-page. .

This book, under the title: "Le Jardinier Francois" was written by Bonnefons and published in Paris in 1651. It was popular enough that a 4th edition was issued in 1654. Evelyn notes that this book was "the first and best of that kind that introduced the use of the olitorie (ie kitchen) garden to any purpose"[Henrey Vol. 1, p. 186]. Bitting: "The work is divided into three parts: the first treats of the soil; the second treats fruits and vegetables; the third is about the manner of conserving fruits in their natural state, dry, with salt and vinegar, sweet wine, cider, and honey, liquid with sugar, dry and pastes, conserves of flowers and massepains."
