Two Thirds of its Capital Stock consumed; and the Nation Reduc'd to such a Condition that it cannot be Restored to the Flourishing State it was Thiry Years ago, in less than Two hundred Years, and not then neither, except the whole Frame of their Government be new Modell'd." By a Person of Quality a Native of France (preface signed "De Souligne, Grandson to Monsieur Du Plessis Mornay). Du Plessis Mornay was the famous Huguenot advisor of Henry of Navarre playing a prominent part in the French Wars of Religion.

Paris: Jean Guignard, 1697. 8vo., (6 2/8 x 3 5/8 inches). 6-page publisher's catalogue at end. Title-page with woodcut device, woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Fine modern red morocco gilt, antique; preserved in a brown cloth clamshell box by Lamb & Buck. Provenance: near contemporary ownership inscription partially obscured at the head of the title-page dated 1698; modern book label on rear paste-down. THE FIRST ACCOUNT OF LA SALLE'S LAST, FATAL VOYAGE First edition, second issue with cancels for pages 167-168, 171-172 and 185-188. Written by La Salle's lieutenant, Tonti, who had entered Louis XIV's service as a cadet in 1668, "serving in several Mediterranean campaigns and losing his right hand in battle. To mitigate the difficulties caused by the loss of his hand, Tonti fitted himself with an artificial hand made either of iron, copper, or silver, which may have been articulated. La Salle noted that Tonti could accomplish tasks that required the use of two free arms. Tonty sometimes used his metal hand as an instrument of diplomacy with Indians, who throughout the Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes knew him as "the man with the iron hand." Unable to obtain further royal patronage at the end of the Dutch wars, Tonti became the chief lieutenant of La Salle, who had been granted permission to explore the Mississippi and exploit its resources... As La Salle's lieutenant, Tonti achieved many firsts in the European exploration and settlement of the North American interior. During the winter of 1678-1679, Tonti supervised construction of the Griffon, the first sailing vessel on the upper Great Lakes. Shortly thereafter he established and built the first post in the Illinois country, Fort Crèvecoeur, on Peoria Lake in early 1680. With La Salle he reached the mouth of the Mississippi River and claimed it for France in April 1682. In December Tonti established Fort St. Louis on a bluff of the Illinois River near present-day Ottawa, Illinois. From there, Tonti began to fashion the network of Franco-Indian alliances that would lay the groundwork for the "French crescent" that would eventually extend from Quebec City to New Orleans and constitute one of the most important factors in the Europeans' imperial contest for North America. In 1686 he established the first post in the Lower Mississippi Valley on the Arkansas River, a vital link in the crescent" (Foret). In the meantime La Salle returned to France and mounted a second expedition which mistakenly landed at Matagorda Bay, Texas (Fort Saint Louis). Tonti remained in charge of the outpost in Illinois territory but later led several missions down the Mississippi from there, hoping to find La Salle. In December 1687, Tonti finally learned that La Salle's men had murdered him and that his colony was on the brink of total destruction, "Tonti set out with a handful of Frenchmen and Indians to succor the hapless settlers. Almost succumbing to starvation themselves, Tonty's party eventually turned back, unable to locate the colony after searching as far as East Texas" (Foret). Though he denied authorship of the work, it has been shown to be based on first-hand accounts Tonti compiled from survivors of La Salle's expedition, whom he interviewed. Rare: only two copies have appeared at auction since 1975.         Rariorum plantarum Horti Medici Amstelodamensis descriptio & Icones.

Amsterdam, P. and J. Blaeu and (weduwe van) Abraham van Someren (1697, 1701). Two parts in two. Folio (near matching at 39.8 x 26 cm and 40.0 x 25.5 cm). Part I: Latin half title; Latin title in two colours with title vignette; Dutch title (do.); engraved allegorical frontispiece showing the virgin of Amsterdam in a foreign (subtropical) landscape amidst exotic people offering plants as gifts; coat-of-arms of Joannes Huydecoper, and that of Joannes Commelin, dedication leaf to the mayors of Amsterdam; [8], 220 pp., 110 engraved plates showing 112 numbered plants with explanatory text leafs in Latin and Dutch, each with floral vignette at the end of each description. Contemporary vellum. Part II: Latin half title, allegorical frontispiece, showing Theophrastus (?) teaching botany in the real Hortus garden, with the houses along the Nieuwe Herengracht canal in the background, Dutch title page, dedication page (to the mayors of Amsterdam, and to the trustees of the Hortus). Coat-of-arms of Franciscus de Vroede (senator of the Hortus), and Joannes Huydecoper (curator), and Gerbrandus Pancras (do.). [4], 224, [4] pp., and 113 plates, numbered up to 112 with fig. 4 in two different states (on recto and verso of one leaf), as intended. Thus, in total, 2 frontispieces 5 coats-of-arms and 225 numbered plates on 222 leaves.* The plants described and figured were collected in Asia, the Americas and South Africa (Cape of Good Hope) by crew members of the merchant ships of the Dutch East and West India companies and donated to the Amsterdam Horticultural Garden, of which Jan Commelin was the director. Jan Commelin (1629-1692) died before the publication of part I of his manuscript, and this is acknowledged on the title pages of Part I. As further explained there, the botanist, zoologist and anatomist Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731) edited the work and added some annotations. Part II was written by Commelin's nephew, and successor, Caspar. The work is of an outstanding quality with beautiful plates with deep shades of grey and black. There are 20 plates depicting Aloes, but also many more exciting exotic plants. Part I with a few small, marginal spots, a few plates slightly age toned, but with strong impressions. Small hole in explanatory leaf to plate 79, some minor soiling to p. 218, contemporary handwriting (the Latin names of the species) in the margin of several plates. Part II with repair to the lower corner of fig. 88, traces of slight worming in the lower inner margin, but this is really unobtrusive. A faint half-circular water stain to outer margin of pp. 205-224 and index, somewhat stronger on figs 105-107, but also hardly distracting. In all a very good copy of this rare and important work on the plants kept in the Amsterdam Hortus Botanicus, which still exists to this day at its original location. Nissen quotes a wrong number of plates, probably counting frontispieces as well. This copy is super complete with 225 numbered figs on 222 leaves, which is one plate more than usually quoted as the maximum, but that is probably because fig. 4 (Part II) has two versions, meaning there are two figures displayed on one leaf (the leaf was printed on both sides), the only plate that was done that way in this entire work. It remains unclear if all copies have this particular double plate, since very few mention it in their descriptions nor is there any remark by the bibliographers on this topic. Furthermore almost all plates show one species, the figure number equals the number of plates, except that figs 42-44 (Part I) are on one plate, for a total of 112 numbered figs on 110 leaves. British Museum (NH) Cat., p. 371; Stafleu & Cowan, 1187; Nissen BBI, 389; Pritzel, 1833.
