John Richardson
[n.p.], February 10, [n.y.]. 6.5 X 7.75 in.. "A very fine content Autograph Letter Signed by a colleague ""N. Spinckes"", two pages, 6.5 x 7.75 in., [no place], February 10, [no year, circa 1695-9] concerning the problems getting Richardson's seminal work, ""Vindication of the Canon of the New Testament against Toland "" published. Spinckes, apparently Richardson's editor and advocate, opens explaining that ""I hoped by this time to have given ou an account [that] yo[u]r excellent Book was in ye Presse. But ye Booksellers with whom I was treating about it, are unwilling (having no knowledge of you)_ to undertake it, so have returned me it. Whereupon my Lord BS of Ely has put into Mr Sare's hand who has promised to do it, & only stays till I have adjusted y[our] references I mentioned to You, which I find are most difficult that I hoped they might have been..."" Indeed this was what occurred in the end. The first edition of his work was published by Richard Sayre and printed by W. Boyer in London. The work was a conservative attack on the work of the work of the early Deist, John Tolland (1670-1722). Though the work apparently only received scant praise from his Richardson's contemporaries and allies, the work went into two more editions in 1701 and 1719 with Sare backing the printing of both editions. Richard Sare (d. 1724) was the publisher of numerous conservative Christian works including A defence [sic] of the short view of the profanes and immorality of the English Stage..., The truth and excellence of the Christian religion asserted: against Jews, infidels and heretic … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROSA SALVATOR.
presso Severo Prothomastix, 1695. Cm. 15, pp. 140. Fregio xilografico al frontespizio. Legatura coeva in cart. .fint … [Click Below for Full Description]

Content: 1 title page and two representations of natives; - vita of the artist: Pieter van der Aa ( 1659 - 1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued. Some of his most popular maps were of the African continent, detailing locations such as Morocco and Madagascar. Many of his later works were printed for the general public in French and Dutch.Pieter van der Aa began his career at Leiden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. As he progressed, he began to publish atlases and maps, compiling numerous multi-volume collections of works. His ambition to become Leiden's most famous printer was fulfilled in 1715 with his appointment to head printer for the city and its university. One of Pieter van der Aa's largest compilations relates to the history of Italy and Sicily, an area of immense personal interest. Though he took credit for many of his compilations, several, such as the Dutch collection of travels to the East and West Indies, were admittedly simple improvements to others' works.

Arndt, Johann.
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

DRAYTON, Michael
Printed for S. Smethwick [c.1695], London. [8], 225pp, [1]. Without frontispiece. Recent calf-backed decorated paper boards, gilt. Very minor wear to extremities. Ink inscriptions to title, browning to all leaves, occasional spots of dust-soiling and light marginal damp-staining, loss of characters 'h' and 'i' of 'white' on p.199. The most prominent work of poet Michael Drayton (1563-1631), England's Heroical Epistles, first published in 1597, takes as inspiration Ovid's Heroides though leans from the mythical focus of the Roman to a more history centric narrative. Comprised as a series of correspondences between notable lovers, the work allows Drayton to explore English history and politics in an entertaining and accessible manner. Wing D2145. Anon.
London . 1695 - Copper engraving, printed on two sheets and originally joined together (Very Good, soft fold slightly age-toned, very light staining) 25,5 x 75 cm (10 x 29,5 inches). This earliest obtainable view of the ruins of Palmyra in Sirya was published in 1695 in Philosophical Transactions, and is based on a sketch made on site by the explorers, who reached the city in 1691. About Philosophical Transactions: This paper examines the first publicly documented western encounter with the ancient city of Palmyra as an archaeological site. This encounter was achieved in the late seventeenth century by a group of British merchants, who reached Palmyra and made drawings and reports of its ruins. The reports were then published in Philosophical Transactions in the mid 1690s. This paper points to the ways in which such accounts came into being, as well as how the city was described and publicly communicated for the first time in Philosophical Transactions. These articles had a great impact throughout the following centuries as a reference for the study of Palmyra. This paper therefore also stresses the pivotal role of Philosophical Transactions for the production and dissemination of Palmyra's archaeological legacy, as well as for the development of early modern archaeology within the early Royal Society. (Gregorio Astengo, The rediscovery of Palmyra and its dissemination in Philosophical Transactions, The Royal Society Journal for the History of Science). The article encouraged further researches of Palmyra. This is the earliest published view of Palmyra and captures almost 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]
