Pas Kaart Van De Zee Kusten Van Virginia.

Amsterdam 1695 - "This chart continues south from the van Keulen chart of New York, from the Atlatic City area south to the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, althouth this time orientated with north to the right. Again drawn by C.J. Voogt, it is mainly derived from the Hermann map of 1675, published in England. However, Vooght has an additional source, as yet untraced, from which he has copied a greater number of soundings, so important for safe navigation. The chart is remarkable for the very early appearance of William Penn's Philadelphia, here shown as 'Filadelphy', without even a symbol for a town. The Pennsylvania colony had only been founded by Royal Charter in 1681, and did not gain cty status until 1701." (Baynton-Williams)An important and decorative sea chart of Virginia published in the impressive Zee Atlas of Van Keulen. Kenneth Rapoport, ex-libris to front paste downs of both vols. The four works constitute the complete set of Leeuwenhoek's letters 28 to 107 in Latin. The remaining letters in Latin were not published before 1719. I. Dobell 25; Norman 1319; PMM 166; Sparrow 128; NLM/Krivatsy 6785; Waller 10877. - FIRST EDITION OF LETTERS 84-92 and first Latin edition of letters 32-33, 37, 39-41, and 61-83. II. Dobell 22 (first edition only); Waller 10878; Norman 1320 (3rd edition). - Dobell, Antony van Leeuwenhoek and his "little animals" London, 1932 (Dobell 25a), confusingly states that this is the second edition of Arcana naturae detecta (1695), whereas it is in fact the second edition of Anatomia seu interiora rerum (1687) containing letters 28-31, 34-36, 38, and 42-52. III. Dobell 24(a); Waller 10883. - Second Latin edition (first published in 1689). Contains letters 53-60, in order, with continous pagination but unnumbered. IV. Contains letters 93-107, all numbered and with continous pagination. Leeuwenhoek was one of the first and greatest microbiologists. He discovered protozoa and bacteria and was the first to describe spermatozoa and red blood corpuscles. The first independent part of this celebrated collection of letters addressed to the Royal Society. These letters incorporate his epoch-making experiments with the MICROSCOPE, and his researches and discoveries opened up a new era of scientific investigation and earned him the title ¿Father of Protozoology and Bacteriology¿. Many of the letters are of outstanding importance and include his account of the animalcula. The personal copy of Thomas Molyneux (1661-1733), Irish physician, professor of Physic at Trinity College and fellow of the Royal Society of London. The visit of Molyneux to Leeuwenhoek's home in 1685 on behalf of the Royal Society to inspect his microscopes is well documented in the literature. Molyneux gave a report of his visit in a letter dated February 13, to the secretary of the Royal Society, Francis Aston. It was read at a February meeting: "I have hitherto delayed, answering your last, because I could not give you an account of Mynheer LEEWENHOECK; but last week I was to wait upon him in your name: he shewed me.         Pera librorum juvenilium: qua, ingenuos, viamque ad eruditionem et bonam mentem affectantes adolescentes donat.

Altdorf, H. Meyer, 1695. 8:o. Dubbelsidig grav. frontespis,(36),749,770-72,753-940,(2,2 blanka) s.

Published in Augsburg by Jeremias Wolff, Augsburg 1695 - This is a handsome print, with breathtaking early colour, depicting the costume of a singer at a masque ball. This bold print is from a colourful series of costume prints engraved and published by Jeremias Wolff at the beginning of the 18th century. The series depicts prancing figures in flamboyant theatrical costumes, and is a superb example of early costume prints. Costume and trade prints, such as this, became extremely popular in Europe at the close of the seventeenth century and continued to serve as a source of inspiration until the decadent days of the Art Deco movement in the 1920's. This magnificent series depicts the costumes of ballet dancers, and opera singers, as well as the vibrant apparel of a jester at a masque ball. As is typical of this genre of print, the figures are pictured in front of an architectural or pastoral background and richly coloured in thick opaque colour with vibrant gold highlights. The series was executed and produced by the prolific German publisher Jeremias Wolff. Wolff came from a family of engravers and became extremely successful, both as an engraver and as a publisher and printseller. He was one of the most prolific publishers and engravers in Augsburg and is responsible for some of the finest engravings to come out of the city. In addition to a number of other costume books and portraits, he was a successful map publisher and it is for his skill as a cartographic engraver that he is perhaps best known. The series in not mentioned in either Colas or Lipperheide. Colas, Bibliographie General du Costume et de la Mode ; Lipperheide, Katalog der Freiherrlich von Lipperheide'schen Kostum-Bibliothek, 1896-1901. Engraving with superb early colour and rich gold highlights. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 5/8 x 6 5/8 inches.

Virginiae Partis Australis, et Floridae Partis Orientalis, Interjacentinumq[ue] Regionum Nova Discriptio

Amsterdam: Gerardum Valk and Petrum Schenk, 1695. Map. Very Good. Map. Circa 1695. Double-page hand-colored map. Map is approximately 19" x 15"; the sheet is approximately 24" x 20.5". This map is a re-issue of Jan Jansson's map of southern Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia, which was first printed in 1621. Jansson's map was, in turn, a very close copy of Willem Blaeu's identically named map, which was published in 1620. This edition shows correctly labeled latitudes and longitudes, French and British coats of arms in their countries' claimed territories, and one of the first identifications of Newport News. There are three imaginary inland lakes labeled: 1) Lacus aqua dulcis adeo magnus ut ex una ripa conspici altara non posit (A freshwater lake so large one shore cannot be seen from the opposite side); 2) In hoc lacu Indigenae argenti grana inveniunt (In this lake, natives find grains of silver); 3) Lacus et insula sarrope, abundat optimus fruct (There is abundant fruit at Lake Sarrope and island.) Clean with several light spots of marginal toning. No rips or tears. Minor offestting of color in the Atlantic Ocean. Tiny pinhole in the lower left corner above the "N" in orientalis. Another map of this edition in lesser condition sold for $1440 (including buyer's commission) at Swann's Auction on 6 June 2013 (Lot 202).

Gio. Giacomo Komarek Boëmo, Rome, Italy 1695 - Several variant spellings abound for the artist's name. Two volumes bound as one, with continuous pagination. Small folio size, 12.5 x 8.75 inches [31 x 22 cm]. Later three-quarter vellum, with red morocco title label on spine, and with red marbled paper hardboards. Covers have moderate rubbing and superficial edge wear. The vellum is impressively clean. The red morocco label reads "Bellori Stanze di Raffael [sic]" and is almost certainly from the original binding of 1695. Two small repaired tears to the title page. Significant foxing to the preliminaries. Hand laid paper. Note that the engraved frontispiece portrait of Raphael by Carlo Maratti is missing. Else very good internally and externally. Present are 4 engraved headpieces, 2 tailpieces and 4 historiated initials, engraved arms of Innocent X, the dedicatee, on title. Divisional title reads: La Favola di Amore, e Psiche Dipinta da Rafaelle, and with a dedication to Francesco Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza (p. 64 on verso) apparently tipped in between signatures H and I. Discusses the artist Raphael (1483-1520). The Vatican City Library has a virtually identical copy. With gratitude to Hugh Pagan for the following description of the text: "First edition of the Roman scholar G.P. Bellori's admirably thorough description of the famous series of paintings by Raphael in the papal apartments in the Vatican Palace. It also provides a full description of Raphael's paintings for the loggia of Psyche in the Villa Farnesina, and an interesting account of the restoration by G .F. Rossi, under the supervision of Carlo Maratta, of Annibale Caracci's cycle of frescoes in the gallery of the Palazzo Farnese. The last eight pages print the speech which Bellori delivered at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome in 1677, celebrating the esteem in which artists such as Giotto, Gentile Bellini, Titian and Rubens were held by kings or popes."         Virginiae Partis Australis, et Floridae Partis Orientalis, Interjacentinumq[ue] Regionum Nova Discriptio

Relation de Voyage Mysterieux de L'Isle de la Vertu, à Oronte

Paris: Christophe Remy, 1695. Small octavo; a very good copy in contemporary calf, slightly worn. The "Protector to the Indians" tells of an island of virtue. Second edition of this rare spiritual romance. First published in Rouen in 1684, this educational novel is written as an allegorical voyage to the imaginary island of "Virtue" on the River Orontes, the chief Syrian river, and the standard route to Egypt since antiquity. The island proves to be a peaceful religious utopia, presented as a model for the reader. Its tenets are suggested by the work's preface, the poem "Epistre à Damon", that is, Damon of Syracuse, who selflessly pledged his life to Dionysus of Syracuse in return for the freedom of his friend. This work has long been attributed to Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659), an important figure in Spanish Catholicism. He spent much of his life as envoy and bishop to Mexico, where his reluctance to convert by any means other than persuasion gained him the title "Protector to the Indians". He returned to Spain after a long-running dispute with the Jesuits, whose privileges he sought to temper. His writings, consisting largely of ascetic, pastoral, and historical treatises, were published in Madrid in the eighteenth century, not long after he narrowly missed out on canonisation.

Textblock tight and firm, a good copy. Philippe de la Hire (1640 - 1718) was a French mathematician who was best known for his work on conic sections, geodesy and astronomy. He was elected to the Académie Royale des Sciences in 1678 and in 1683 he was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the College Royale. Four years later he was appointed, in addition, to the chair of architecture at the Academie Royale. Geometry which he had studied during 4 years in Italy was a special interest of his. "This work marks a significant step toward the elaboration of a modern manual of practical mechanics, suitable for engineers of various disciplines... he furnished useful descriptions and put forth the suggestion of adopting an epicycloidal profile for gear wheels." DSB 7, 578. "Pages 231 - 237 are devoted to finding the correct form to be given to the fusee in spring clocks. The form is found geometrically on the assumption that the force of the spring is proportional to the angular movement of the barrel." Baillie, Clocks and Watches, page 122.

"The important "Traité de mécanique" that La Hire published in 1695 represents a synthesis of his diverse theorical and practical preoccupations. Although passed over by the majority of the historians of mechanics, this work marks a significant step toward the eloboration of a modern manual of practical mechanics, suitable for engineers of various disciplines. (.) On the theorical plane, La Hire's treatise was already out of date at the time of its apparence because it ignored Newton's laws of dynamics and the indispensable infinitesimal methods. On the other hand, while La Hire did not tackle the problem of energy, he furnished useful descriptions and put forth the suggestions of adopting an epicycloidal profile for gear wheels." DSB 7, 578.         Letras Que Se Han De Cantar En La Fiesta Que Celebran Los Impressores De Libros De Esta Imperial Ciudad De Zaragoza, a Su Patrón Glorioso San Juan Apóstol, y Evangelista, En El Martirio De La - Tina, Este Año De 1695. Hizieronse En Metaphora.

8º [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
