Present State of the Empire of Morocco; With a faithful account of the manners, religion, and government of that people

London: R. Bently, 1695 [xxiv]+216+[12] pages with frontispiece, folding map and eight engraved costume plates. Duodecimo (6 ¼" x 3 ½") early full calf, later spine label. First Edition in English. First published in French the prior year which was published without the plates.François Pidou de Saint Olon was a French diplomat under Louis XIV. In 1682, he was nominated as the first French resident envoy to the Republic of Genoa, following the Bombardment of Genoa. He was then sent as an envoy to Madrid. In 1689 , François Pidou was appointed ambassador to the court of Sultan Moulay Ismail, for the signing of a commercial treaty and to release prisoners, now slaves, of Barbary corsairs of Salé for 233 including 29 bedridden Moroccan prisoners held by the French. His mission was not successful, however, he continued to stay more than three weeks more in Morocco. The book gains particular interest through its author's position as ambassador, giving him access (not always voluntary), to areas of Moroccan society previously unrecorded by travelers. There are detailed descriptions of Moroccan dress, and the book is beautifully illustrated with eight engraved plates of Moroccan men and women in traditional costume.Condition:With the fine copper engraved frontispiece of the overall state of Morocco which is quite rare and is often found missing in most copies. Joints cracking, spine chipped at edges; foxing else very good.

An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. In Four Books. The Third Edition

Printed for Awnsham and John Churchil[l],. and Samuel Manship, London 1695 - Pp. 20 p.l., 407, [1] blank, [11] index, [1] ads. Engraved frontis portrait by P. Vanderbanck after Sylvester Brounower. Contemporary mottled calf, panelled in the Cambridge style, with raised bands and gilt label. Binding a bit rubbed and pitted, front joint partially split (but still holding firmly), minor repair to headcap, endpapers a little soiled, old signature on title, closed tears to margins of G2 and I2, just touching letterpress but not affecting legibility; but generally a clean, crisp copy in a still presentable binding, with the engraved bookplate of Gregory Elsley. The Third Edition of the Essay, being a line-by-line reprint of the second edition, incorporating the errata. Locke's Essay Concerning Humane Understanding, first published in 1690, was the first modern attempt to critically examine the nature and scope of human reason. The stated purpose was "to enquire into the original, certainty and extent of human knowledge, together with the grounds and degrees of belief, opinion, and assent." Reflecting the scientific temper of the times, Locke sought to establish an empirical basis for all knowledge, to show that "all knowledge is founded on and ultimately derives from sense. or sensation." Against the Platonic notion of 'innate ideas', Locke argues that the mind is a 'tabula rasa', with all our ideas coming from experience, that is, sensation and reflection (a kind of internal sense perception). Pure reality can never be grasped directly by the mind, without the intervention of ideas, but despite the representative quality of our knowledge, our ideas give us an adequate picture of the world, with a fidelity "as great as our condition needs". The importance and influence of Locke's Essay on subsequent thinkers can hardly be exaggerated. It was the first and probably the most important statement of the empiricist theory of knowledge in the British tradition, leading from Locke to Berkeley to Hume, which when combined with the Cartesian rationalism of the Continent culminated in the critical philosophy of Kant.         A report containing an essay for the amendment of the silver coins.

London, printed by Charles Bill, and the executrix of Thomas Newcomb, deceas'd; printers to the Kings most excellent Majesty. 1695. 8vo., 159 + (1)pp., in contemporary cottage style panelled calf, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands, worn at foot and with minor general wear to binding. A very good, crisp, copy with the 19th century armorial bookplate of an unidentified nobleman on front pastedown. First, and only early, edition. Wing L.3323. Kress 1908. Goldsmiths 3131. Massie 1309. Hollander 392. Not in Einaudi (which has a 19th century reprint). Lowndes (1652-1724) was appointed Secretary to the Treasury in 1695. 'With a view to the recoinage of 1696, he was requested to undertake an investigation into the state of the currency, the results of which were published with the title A Report containing an Essay for the Amendment of the Silver Coins ...> In this important work, while he repudiated any measure which would have the character of debasing the currency, he suggested, as a necessary measure for placing it upon a satisfactory basis, that all denominations of the silver coin should be raised 25 per cent. Lowndes had carefully examined the records of the mint and other documents, and he ably defended his position with historical arguments based upon these materials. He also maintained that the price of silver had risen to 6s. 5d. an oz.,> and that if the measure he proposed were adopted, persons who melted down the coin would have 'less profit by fourteen pence half-penny in the crown'. Further arguments he used in support of his scheme were that it would encourage the bringing of bullion to the mint to be coined, and would make the coinage 'more in tale, more commensurate to the general need thereof'. To meet the objection that people would lose 20 per cent on contracts already made, he maintained the scarcity of silver. He computed the amount of 'weighty money' hoarded up at £1,600,000. The most famous of the replies to Lowndes' Essay> was written by John Locke, and was entitled Further Considerations concerning the raising the value of money, wherein Mr. Lowndes' arguments for it in his late report concerning 'An Essay,' etc., are particularly examined.> While the opposition accepted the views urged by Lowndes, Montagu and the government adopted those of Locke, and the recoinage on the old standard was carried on Dec. 10, 1698 [sic: actually 1695], in the House of Commons, by 225 to 114.'         Il viottolo tra i monti

Etching, 1695 circa, without signature. Example of the first state of two, before the address of De' Rossi was added. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "three mounts with lily" watermark, with margins; a small grease stain on verso can be partly seen on recto, in general in good condition. Ascribed in the past to Castiglione and Grimaldi, this work has been afterward attributed to Onofri by Alfredo Petrucci, who also underlines the fact that this particular print stands out among the artist production because it "is influenced by the classic - idyllic genre used by the XVII century artists; it was used to subordinate the vision of a natural landscape to the memory of the past grandeur of Rome, filling the space with cippi, altars and broken columns". Crescenzo Onofri was a Roman artist and spent most of his artistic career working as a painter in his native city. Pascoli briefly refers to him, mentioning Onofri as the sole student of Gaspard Dugher; apart from that, we do not have many other biographic news about the artist. Since his pictorial style was very close to that of his master, it is only recently that a corpus of works has been ascribed to the artist. In particular, in 1960 his beautiful frescoes of the Castello Theodoli in San Vito Romano have been published and in 1963 he was attributed an important group of gouaches in Palazzo Doria, taking them away from Dughet. His engravings show many of his paintings qualities and at least five of them, published in 1696, bear an inscription indicating a precise reference to the frescoes in San Vito Romano. Onofri's landscapes do not have the same clarity and unity of Dughet's, concentration and focus recalling Nicolas Poussin. The forms tend to be put together in a sharp manner, with Baroque rhythms, and there is not composition unification as a consequence of a careful organization of the masses, the lights and the tones. Ex collection D'ARENBERG (Lugt 567). A. Petrucci , Il Caravaggio acquafortista e il mondo calcografico romano, p. 105/9, 39; Reed & Wallace, Italian etchers of the Renaissance & Barocque, p. 177.         Biblia Ectypa

Christoph Weigel, 1695.

Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford 1695 - Bound in heavy black cloth boards stamped in gilt along the spine, a total of 99 pages with "Finis" followed by an original endpaper. An ex-library book with "No longer the property of Haverford College" stamped over the library sticker from the Physics Laboratory, The Library of Haverford College on the front pastedown. With an engraved title page, featuring the Sheldonian House in Oxford. Numerous woodcut diagrams of optics and angles as well as several full-page plates and illustrations throughout the text. Printed on high quality white paper with a high rag content. The title page has the previous owner's name in ink: Nathan Wrighte of Englefield No. 239 in addition to the dime-sized library stamp, the only indication of ex-library in the actual text. A clean, handsome copy of this rather scarce work on optics, a splendid candidate for rebinding in leather. First edition of this rare work, famous today for its suggestion that an achromatic compound lens might be formed by combining simples lenses of different media. The use of ‘achromatic doublets’ was a crucial step in the further development of telescopes and microscopes. From Marischal College, Aberdeen, David Gregory (1659-1708) entered Edinburgh University, graduating M.A. on 28 November 1683. A month prior to his graduation he was elected to the Chair of Mathematics, at one time occupied by his uncle, the great mathematician James Gregory, whose Optica promota (1663) had described a reflecting telescope which used parabolic mirrors. As a professor, David Gregory was the first to lecture publicly on the Newtonian philosophy. His lecture notes show that they covered a broad range of subjects including geodesy, optics, dynamics, and various branches of mathematics. Increasingly under attack by his fellow professors at Edinburgh for his radical political views, in 1691 he went to London where he was introduced to Newton and recommended to John Flamsteed, the first astronomer royal. As Gregory tells us in the preface, the present work is the printed version of lectures delivered at Edinburgh in 1684, adapted to the teaching of Oxford undergraduates. The passage in which Gregory uses the analogy with the human eye to suggest the construction of an achromatic lens occurs on p. 98: in English translation, ‘Perhaps it would be of service to make the object lens of a different medium, as we see done in the fabric of the eye; where the crystalline humour (whose power of refracting the rays of light differs very little from that of glass) is by Nature, who never does anything in vain, joined with the aqueous and vitreous humours (not differing from water as to their power of refraction), in order that the image may be painted as distinct as possible on the bottom of the eye.’ Whiteside (DSB) suggests that Gregory may have had this insight from Newton. (Sophia Rare Books) First Edition with matching dates of 1695 on the title and copyright pages and with "Apr. 18, 1695" on the copyright page. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Some Thoughts Concerning Education

Late 17th-century edition of John Locke without his name! Some Thoughts Concerning Education the Third Edition Englarged by John Locke (author of the Two Treatises of Government, and an Essay on Human Understanding) Hardcover Third Edition A. & J. Churchill 1695. The first edition was 1693 and generally runs $3000 to $7500+, although this third edition was greatly expanded from the first with many errors corrected at the behest of Locke. From a textual standpoint, much more desirable than the first edition. Only other copy of this edition available in the US is offered at $1500.size, collation, condition: 8vo (about 7.5"x 5") in period calf with new spine and endpapers. title page; epistle dedicatory (5 upaginated); Main Text of "Education" 1-374, Contents (2 unpaginated). Very good to near fine pages in orginal boards with new spine. label and new underpapers. Slight water-staining to inner margins on the first few and last pages, NOT affecting text. Most inner text pages are quite clean and nice with only some inevitable aging. Very nicely re-backed spine perserving original boards which are somewhat aged but intact. A very nice smart copy, overall quite nice given its 315+ years. The first few editions of John Locke's works did not have his name listed. He feared King William and Queen Mary would disapprove of his works. The first edition of Locke's "Education" was published in 1693, but because of errors, a second edition appeared the same year, but with few corrections. This third edition is considerably enlarged with many errors corrected, and is closest to the definitive edition prior to his collected works of 1700. The author's Epistle Dedicatory is addressed to Edward Clarke, to whose children Locke wrote letters of advice in 1684. This book is a result of those letters. In 1684 Edward Clarke asked his friend, John Locke, for advice on raising his son and heir, Edward, Jr.; Locke responded with a series of letters that eventually served as the basis of Some Thoughts Concerning Education. But it was not until 1693, encouraged by the Clarkes and another friend, William Molyneux, that Locke actually published the treatise; Locke, "timid" when it came to public exposure, decided to publish the text anonymously. Although Locke revised and expanded the text five times before he died,[7] he never substantially altered the "familiar and friendly style of the work." The "Preface" alerted the reader to its humble origins as a series of letters and, according to Nathan Tarcov, who has written an entire volume on Some Thoughts, advice that otherwise might have appeared "meddlesome" became welcome. Tarcov claims Locke treated his readers as his friends and they responded in kind. John Locke (1632-1704), widely known as the Father of Classical Liberalism,[2][3][4] was an English philosopher and physician regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers, particularly American and French intellectuals such as Thomas Jefferson and Voltaire. Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work had a great impact upon the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence. Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as Hume, Rousseau and Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to pre-existing Cartesian philosophy, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived sense perception.NOTE: The picture is the actual item for sale. Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Sir Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that, at birth, the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to Cartesian philosophy based on pre-existing concepts, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived from sense perception. An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, concerns the foundation of human knowledge and understanding. It first appeared in 1689 (although dated 1690) with the printed title An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. He describes the mind at birth as a blank slate (tabula rasa, although he did not use those actual words) filled later through experience. The essay was one of the principal sources of empiricism in modern philosophy, and influenced many enlightenment philosophers, such as David Hume and George Berkeley.Book I of the Essay is Locke's attempt to refute the rationalist notion of innate ideas. Book II sets out Locke's theory of ideas, including his distinction between passively acquired simple ideas, such as "red," "sweet," "round," etc., and actively built complex ideas, such as numbers, causes and effects, abstract ideas, ideas of substances, identity, and diversity. Locke also distinguishes between the truly existing primary qualities of bodies, like shape, motion and the arrangement of minute particles, and the secondary qualities that are "powers to produce various sensations in us" such as "red" and "sweet." These secondary qualities, Locke claims, are dependent on the primary qualities. He also offers a theory of personal identity, offering a largely psychological criterion. Book III is concerned with language, and Book IV with knowledge, including intuition, mathematics, moral philosophy, natural philosophy ("science"), faith, and opinion.Yolton, 63; Printing and the Mind of Man, 164 (first edition); Grolier, 100 English, 36 (first edition).

A total of seven editions were printed of the Swedberg hymn book, which was withdrawn after complaints from the Swedish bishops regarding its content. The editions have all been described as typographical masterpieces, but because of the withdrawal most of the volumes remained unused in the National Archives in Stockholm. Swedberg however sent a number of copies of the hymn book to the Swedish congregations in Delaware, an act he later repeated with his own bible edition, printed in Skara. A copy of the present edition was the most expensive of the Swedberg hymn books when the fine library of the renowned Swedish bibliophile Per Hierta was sold at auction. The copy was bought by Göteborgs universitetsbibliotek for 150 SEK. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
