        Il viottolo tra i monti

Etching, 1695 circa, without signature. Example of the first state of two, before the address of De' Rossi was added. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "three mounts with lily" watermark, with margins; a small grease stain on verso can be partly seen on recto, in general in good condition. Ascribed in the past to Castiglione and Grimaldi, this work has been afterward attributed to Onofri by Alfredo Petrucci, who also underlines the fact that this particular print stands out among the artist production because it "is influenced by the classic - idyllic genre used by the XVII century artists; it was used to subordinate the vision of a natural landscape to the memory of the past grandeur of Rome, filling the space with cippi, altars and broken columns". Crescenzo Onofri was a Roman artist and spent most of his artistic career working as a painter in his native city. Pascoli briefly refers to him, mentioning Onofri as the sole student of Gaspard Dugher; apart from that, we do not have many other biographic news about the artist. Since his pictorial style was very close to that of his master, it is only recently that a corpus of works has been ascribed to the artist. In particular, in 1960 his beautiful frescoes of the Castello Theodoli in San Vito Romano have been published and in 1963 he was attributed an important group of gouaches in Palazzo Doria, taking them away from Dughet. His engravings show many of his paintings qualities and at least five of them, published in 1696, bear an inscription indicating a precise reference to the frescoes in San Vito Romano. Onofri's landscapes do not have the same clarity and unity of Dughet's, concentration and focus recalling Nicolas Poussin. The forms tend to be put together in a sharp manner, with Baroque rhythms, and there is not composition unification as a consequence of a careful organization of the masses, the lights and the tones. Ex collection D'ARENBERG (Lugt 567). A. Petrucci , Il Caravaggio acquafortista e il mondo calcografico romano, p. 105/9, 39; Reed & Wallace, Italian etchers of the Renaissance & Barocque, p. 177.         Biblia Ectypa

Christoph Weigel, 1695.

Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford 1695 - Bound in heavy black cloth boards stamped in gilt along the spine, a total of 99 pages with "Finis" followed by an original endpaper. An ex-library book with "No longer the property of Haverford College" stamped over the library sticker from the Physics Laboratory, The Library of Haverford College on the front pastedown. With an engraved title page, featuring the Sheldonian House in Oxford. Numerous woodcut diagrams of optics and angles as well as several full-page plates and illustrations throughout the text. Printed on high quality white paper with a high rag content. The title page has the previous owner's name in ink: Nathan Wrighte of Englefield No. 239 in addition to the dime-sized library stamp, the only indication of ex-library in the actual text. A clean, handsome copy of this rather scarce work on optics, a splendid candidate for rebinding in leather. First edition of this rare work, famous today for its suggestion that an achromatic compound lens might be formed by combining simples lenses of different media. The use of ‘achromatic doublets’ was a crucial step in the further development of telescopes and microscopes. From Marischal College, Aberdeen, David Gregory (1659-1708) entered Edinburgh University, graduating M.A. on 28 November 1683. A month prior to his graduation he was elected to the Chair of Mathematics, at one time occupied by his uncle, the great mathematician James Gregory, whose Optica promota (1663) had described a reflecting telescope which used parabolic mirrors. As a professor, David Gregory was the first to lecture publicly on the Newtonian philosophy. His lecture notes show that they covered a broad range of subjects including geodesy, optics, dynamics, and various branches of mathematics. Increasingly under attack by his fellow professors at Edinburgh for his radical political views, in 1691 he went to London where he was introduced to Newton and recommended to John Flamsteed, the first astronomer royal. As Gregory tells us in the preface, the present work is the printed version of lectures delivered at Edinburgh in 1684, adapted to the teaching of Oxford undergraduates. The passage in which Gregory uses the analogy with the human eye to suggest the construction of an achromatic lens occurs on p. 98: in English translation, ‘Perhaps it would be of service to make the object lens of a different medium, as we see done in the fabric of the eye; where the crystalline humour (whose power of refracting the rays of light differs very little from that of glass) is by Nature, who never does anything in vain, joined with the aqueous and vitreous humours (not differing from water as to their power of refraction), in order that the image may be painted as distinct as possible on the bottom of the eye.’ Whiteside (DSB) suggests that Gregory may have had this insight from Newton. He discovered bacteria and protozoa and was probably the first to clearly observe the red blood cells. He described the life-history of the ant and could provede evidsence against the theory of spontaneous generation, i.e. the belief that animal forms breed from corruption, and much more. He did not wrote any books himself, all his discoveries came to light through letters to Henry Oldenburg and other members of the Royal Society in London, which also published his letters. He edited a collection of geological papers on Western India, including a summary of the geology of India, which was published in 1857. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1859. Percy Frankland (1858-1946) was a British chemist, professor of chemistry at the University of Dundee and later professor of Chemistry at Mason Science College (which later became Birmingham University). He applied bacteriology to water analysis and studied the chemical aspects of fermentation. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in June 1891. Nils Fries (1912-94) was professor in botany at the university of Uppsala

        Some Thoughts Concerning Education

Late 17th-century edition of John Locke without his name! Some Thoughts Concerning Education the Third Edition Englarged by John Locke (author of the Two Treatises of Government, and an Essay on Human Understanding) Hardcover Third Edition A. & J. Churchill 1695. The first edition was 1693 and generally runs $3000 to $7500+, although this third edition was greatly expanded from the first with many errors corrected at the behest of Locke. From a textual standpoint, much more desirable than the first edition. Only other copy of this edition available in the US is offered at $1500.size, collation, condition: 8vo (about 7.5"x 5") in period calf with new spine and endpapers. title page; epistle dedicatory (5 upaginated); Main Text of "Education" 1-374, Contents (2 unpaginated). Very good to near fine pages in orginal boards with new spine. label and new underpapers. Slight water-staining to inner margins on the first few and last pages, NOT affecting text. Most inner text pages are quite clean and nice with only some inevitable aging. Very nicely re-backed spine perserving original boards which are somewhat aged but intact. A very nice smart copy, overall quite nice given its 315+ years. The first few editions of John Locke's works did not have his name listed. He feared King William and Queen Mary would disapprove of his works. The first edition of Locke's "Education" was published in 1693, but because of errors, a second edition appeared the same year, but with few corrections. This third edition is considerably enlarged with many errors corrected, and is closest to the definitive edition prior to his collected works of 1700. The author's Epistle Dedicatory is addressed to Edward Clarke, to whose children Locke wrote letters of advice in 1684. This book is a result of those letters. In 1684 Edward Clarke asked his friend, John Locke, for advice on raising his son and heir, Edward, Jr.; Locke responded with a series of letters that eventually served as the basis of Some Thoughts Concerning Education. But it was not until 1693, encouraged by the Clarkes and another friend, William Molyneux, that Locke actually published the treatise; Locke, "timid" when it came to public exposure, decided to publish the text anonymously. Although Locke revised and expanded the text five times before he died,[7] he never substantially altered the "familiar and friendly style of the work." The "Preface" alerted the reader to its humble origins as a series of letters and, according to Nathan Tarcov, who has written an entire volume on Some Thoughts, advice that otherwise might have appeared "meddlesome" became welcome. Tarcov claims Locke treated his readers as his friends and they responded in kind. John Locke (1632-1704), widely known as the Father of Classical Liberalism,[2][3][4] was an English philosopher and physician regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers, particularly American and French intellectuals such as Thomas Jefferson and Voltaire. Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work had a great impact upon the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence. Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as Hume, Rousseau and Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to pre-existing Cartesian philosophy, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived sense perception.NOTE: The picture is the actual item for sale.       Claude Barbin, Paris 1695 - A fair to good set in 2 volumes, in contemporary full leather binding.M Jean de la Quintinye was trained as a lawyer, but is famed for his skills in kitchen gardening. He was commissioned by Louis XIV to create a new kitchen garden for Versailles - which can still be visited today. He is said to be the first gardener to advocate pruning young fruit trees hard to ensure better growth and fruiting for the future. London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchil, 1695. Folio 11 15/16 x 7 5/8 inches; 303 x 194 mm.). [xxxix], [xl, blank], 407, [1, blank], [11, index], [1, advertisements] pp. Complete with the engraved frontispiece portrait of Locke by Vanderbanck, after Brounower.Contemporary sprinkled calf, covers ruled in blind, spine with five raised bands, edges sprinkled red. A remarkable and spectacular copy.Third edition of the "most popular and enduring of all Locke's writings" (Yolton), "a line-by-line reprint of the Second edition (1694) with minor adjustments and the errata of the second edition corrected, but also with many misprints."John Locke FRS (29 August 1632 - 28 October 1704) was an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism". Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Sir Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence.Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as Hume, Rousseau, and Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that, at birth, the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to Cartesian philosophy based on pre-existing concepts, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived from sense perception. An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, concerns the foundation of human knowledge and understanding. It first appeared in 1689 (although dated 1690) with the printed title An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. He describes the mind at birth as a blank slate (tabula rasa, although he did not use those actual words) filled later through experience. The essay was one of the principal sources of empiricism in modern philosophy, and influenced many enlightenment philosophers, such as David Hume and George Berkeley.Book I of the Essay is Locke's attempt to refute the rationalist notion of innate ideas. Book II sets out Locke's theory of ideas, including his distinction between passively acquired simple ideas, such as "red," "sweet," "round," etc., and actively built complex ideas, such as numbers, causes and effects, abstract ideas, ideas of substances, identity, and diversity. Locke also distinguishes between the truly existing primary qualities of bodies, like shape, motion and the arrangement of minute particles, and the secondary qualities that are "powers to produce various sensations in us" such as "red" and "sweet." These secondary qualities, Locke claims, are dependent on the primary qualities. He also offers a theory of personal identity, offering a largely psychological criterion. Book III is concerned with language, and Book IV with knowledge, including intuition, mathematics, moral philosophy, natural philosophy ("science"), faith, and opinion.Yolton, 63; Printing and the Mind of Man, 164 (first edition); Grolier, 100 English, 36 (first edition).

A total of seven editions were printed of the Swedberg hymn book, which was withdrawn after complaints from the Swedish bishops regarding its content. The editions have all been described as typographical masterpieces, but because of the withdrawal most of the volumes remained unused in the National Archives in Stockholm. Swedberg however sent a number of copies of the hymn book to the Swedish congregations in Delaware, an act he later repeated with his own bible edition, printed in Skara. A copy of the present edition was the most expensive of the Swedberg hymn books when the fine library of the renowned Swedish bibliophile Per Hierta was sold at auction. The copy was bought by Göteborgs universitetsbibliotek for 150 SEK. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Present State of the Empire of Morocco; With a faithful account of the manners, religion, and government of that people

      R. Bently, London 1695 - [xxiv]+216+[12] pages with frontispiece, folding map and eight engraved costume plates. Duodecimo (6 ¼" x 3 ½") early full calf, later spine label. First Edition in English. First published in French the prior year which was published without the plates. François Pidou de Saint Olon was a French diplomat under Louis XIV. In 1682, he was nominated as the first French resident envoy to the Republic of Genoa, following the Bombardment of Genoa. He was then sent as an envoy to Madrid. In 1689 , François Pidou was appointed ambassador to the court of Sultan Moulay Ismail, for the signing of a commercial treaty and to release prisoners, now slaves, of Barbary corsairs of Salé for 233 including 29 bedridden Moroccan prisoners held by the French. His mission was not successful, however, he continued to stay more than three weeks more in Morocco. The book gains particular interest through its author's position as ambassador, giving him access (not always voluntary), to areas of Moroccan society previously unrecorded by travelers. There are detailed descriptions of Moroccan dress, and the book is beautifully illustrated with eight engraved plates of Moroccan men and women in traditional costume. Condition: With the fine copper engraved frontispiece of the overall state of Morocco which is quite rare and is often found missing in most copies. Joints cracking, spine chipped at edges, foxing else very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Free Discourse against Customary Swearing

London: Printed by R. R. for Thomas Cockerill, , 1695. And a Dissuasive from Cursing. Octavo (179 x 109 mm). Contemporary black morocco, decorative gilt spine tooled with motifs of hops and flowers, red morocco label, two-line gilt border on sides enclosing gilt panels with corner motifs of acorns and flowers, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of Hog of Newliston, probably James Maitland Hog (1799-1858), advocate. Lacking the engraved portrait frontispiece of Boyle, joints rubbed and partially split but sound, label chipped, internally a little dust-marking. An attractive copy with the terminal advertisement leaf. First edition, with an attractive early American provenance, a preliminary blank is inscribed: "Wm. Dummer's Booke, 3: May 1706, pretium 3 s[hillings]". This is the governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, William Dummer (1677-1761), after whom Dummer's War is named, a series of battles between New England and the Wabanaki Confederacy (1722-1725). His inscription evokes the short period that he is recorded as having spent in England, working with his extended family's merchant business in London. "Oaths were controversial in seventeenth-century England, for two reasons: one, because of those who took them too seriously, the other due to those who did not take them seriously enough. To deal with the latter first, there was much concern at the time that oaths were being trivialised by their casual use: indeed, Boyle himself had written a treatise on this subject in the late 1640s which was published after his death, his A Free Discourse against Customary Swearing. In it, he gave a series of arguments against such use of oaths in fashionable circles, echoing the views of many at the time that it was because oaths were so serious a matter - religious acts in which God was invoked as a witness - that their abuse was so offensive: 'the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain', in the words of the Ten Commandments" (Michael Hunter, Robert Boyle 1627-1691: Scrupulosity and Science, 2000, p. 65).

An Act of the Parliament of Scotland for Erecting an East-India Company in that Kingdom.

Edinburgh: Printed by the Heirs and Successors of Andrew Anderson... and Re-printed at London, for Sam. Manship... and Hugh Newman, , 1695. Folio (307 x 197 mm), pp. [4],8. Sometime overcast sewn, now disbound, preserved in a blue cloth folder, spine lettered gilt. Complete with the initial blank leaf. Stab marks from sewing in the gutter, lightly browned throughout; a very good copy. First London edition of this important act "for a Company trading to Africa and the Indies", the document creating the Company of Scotland, later to become the Darien Company. "The originator of this disastrous enterprise was William Paterson, the founder of the Bank of England... Without divulging the details of his scheme, he succeeded in exciting the speculative interest of his countrymen, and a bill to establish the new company was carried through the Scotch Parliament and received the sanction of the Lord High Commissioner on 26th June 1695. The 'Company of Scotland trading to Africa and the Indies,' was authorised to seize unoccupied territories in Asia, Africa, and America, to plant colonies, construct forts, wage war and conclude treaties; while the king was pledged to obtain reparation from any foreign state which molested the company. The company received a monopoly of the trade with Asia, Africa, and America for thirty-one years, and for twenty-one years their imports, except sugar and tobacco, were to be free of all duties. Scotchmen hastened to invest their scanty savings in the new venture, and £220,000 was actually contributed towards a nominal capital of £400,000." (Palgrave). English opposition to the company and Scottish determination to establish a colony at Darien, (with some 1200 colonists including Paterson and his wife departing Leith for Darien in 1698), resulted in the collapse of the company in 1700, ultimately leading to the Act of Union of 1707 and the payment by England to Scotland of £398,000 (the Equivalent) in compensation for the losses.

Of the Consolation of Philosophy. In Five Books. Made English and Illustrated with Notes, by the Right Honourable Richard Lord Viscount Preston. London: Printed by J.D. for Awnsham and John Churchill?[et al.],

London: Printed by J.D. for Awnsham and John Churchill?[et al.], 1695 First edition of this translation. Contemporary calf, rebacked, with gilt black morocco spine labels, gilt coat-or-arms on front cover. Octavo. Some browning to portrait, and small chip at fore-margin, last few leaves with uneven brown spotting, one leaf with chip at fore-margin, not affecting text. A good copy. Boethius' De Consolatione Philosophiae, which was written in prison shortly before the author's death in 525 A.D. was long considered the last great classic work of ancient literature. It was one of the most popular literary works of the Middle Ages and was translated into many languages. Preston justifies this fourth English translation on the grounds that two seventeenth-century predecessors were too incomplete and imperfect, and that Geoffrey Chaucer's early translation?itself an imitation of Alfred the Great's Anglo-Saxon version?was to incomprehensible to late seventeenth-century readers. Preston intended his translation to bring Boethius' treatise on worldly suffering and the goodness of God within the understanding of ordinary people. He therefore compressed and minimized his notes so not to distract from the text. A life of Boethius and translations into English of early comments about him by Greek and Latin authors are prefixed to the text.

Aurorens, Königlicher Princeßin aus Creta, Staats- und Liebes-Geschichte, Der galanten Welt zu vergönnter Gemüths-Ergötzung vorgestellet von Talandern (Pseud.). 1 Bl., 860 S. Mit gestoch. Frontispiz. Pappbd d. Z. (berieben, Gelenke beschabt) mit Rückenschild.

Leipzig, Johann Ludwig Gleditsch und M. G. Weidmanns sel. Erben, 1695. - Erste Ausgabe des galanten Romans. "Talander is of importance for the history of the novel for two reasons: first, because he omits the scholarly element; and second, because, unlike Weise, he gives not just a series of andventures set forth one after another but one continuouos action" (Faber du Faur). VII 516; Kat. Wolfenbüttel B 172. Vgl. Faber du Faur II 876a (A. 1697). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Paris: Chez l'Auteur Folio (40 cm, 15.75"). Frontis., [12], 304 (i.e., 332), 108, 116, [38], 16 pp.; 5 plts., illus.. 1695 Second and => for the first time self-published edition of this groundbreaking, best-selling guide to botanically derived medicines, written by the chief pharmacist to Louis XIV. Highly influential in its time, Pomet's materia medica covers botanical, zoological, and mineral sources and is illustrated in this edition with => almost 200 copper-engraved, in-text images including many of the plants described along with subjects such as coral, ostriches, and fish, not to mention exotica like mummies, unicorns, and some extremely implausibly depicted rhinoceroses and whales. Also present are images of harvesting and processing sugar cane, indigo, and tobacco (all depicting black workers). In addition, the final addendum, "Remarques tres-curieuses sur plusieurs vegetaux, animaux, mineraux, & autres, que j'ai oublié d'inserer dans la premiere impression, ou que j'ai découvert du depuis," supplies information on mercury, cinnabar, antimony, etc., along with five tipped-in plates showing mechoacan, Virginia snakeroot, indigo, drakena, and an assortment of bezoars. The => Americana content is noteworthy, with discussion of cacao, chocolate, tobacco, jalap, and so on. Tea and coffee are present as well. This second edition was retitled by Pomet from the original Histoire générale des drogues, and is both less widely held and less frequently described in bibliographies (WorldCat and NUC Pre-1956 locate only seven U.S. institutional holdings). It opens with a frontispiece portrait of the author, done by A. le Clerc the Younger, facing a title-page vignette by I. Crespy; sections open with decorative headpieces and capitals and many close with tailpieces. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt extra and with gilt-stamped leather title-label; ; binding rubbed and scuffed with leather pitted, front joint cracked but holding, spine refurbished with untooled leather replacing that lost in bottom compartment. First few leaves with edges darkened and slightly ragged; dedication and first leaf of preface with inkstains in upper margins; early portion with light waterstaining in upper margins. Several leaves with tears from margins, some extending into text without loss; a few leaves with small rectangular portion of lower inner margins cut away and two with corners torn away, one with loss of a few words and the other wish loss of about ten; two leaves each with a tiny burn hole affecting one letter. One leaf torn across, tear going through two images without loss; one leaf with small ink smears entering into an image frame (for "De la Colle de Poisson"), not approaching the images themselves. Clearly a much-read, pored-over example of this great 17th-century treatise, and also one => fit for much more enjoyment and "action.
