Deuel PEAD
[Christianity, Religion] ~ VIRGINIA PREACHER'S FIRST WORK? PEAD, Deuel Jesus is God: or, the deity of Jesus Christ vindicated. Being an Abstract of some Sermons Preach'd in the Parish-Church of St. James Clerkenwell London. Printed for Will. Newton, 1694. 8vo. [16], 125pp, [1]. With initial imprimatur leaf and a cancel title leaf. Contemporary blind-ruled sheep, rubbed with a little loss to spine. Reducing stain to head of title, preliminaries and first 12 leaves, else a clean and crisp copy in an unsophisticated binding. Several ink inscriptions of 'John Cain his book 1763', to verso of A1 and final leaf, later inscription of 'J.H.L. Parker, 1940' to FFEP. A rare variant edition, with a cancel title, of an altogether uncommon work by acclaimed preacher Deuel Pead (1647-1727), Minister of St. James, Clerkenwell, known for high church leanings and encouraging his congregations to bow reverently at the name of Jesus. Pead's sermons were published with regularity between 1694 and 1719, and he is perhaps best remembered for his Annus victoriis mirabilis (London, 1706/7), a New Years Eve thanksgiving sermon occasioned by the Duke of Marlborough's victories in the War of the Spanish Succession. This present title, described as 'an abstract of some sermons Preach'd in...St James Clerkenwell' is scripturally based on Matthew XIII, 58, and was apparently his first published work. Pead had been, however, long recognised as an inspiring preacher; he was one of several young clergyman dispatched to Virginia in the seventeenth-century as part of Henry Compton, Bishop of London's attempt … [Click Below for Full Description]

The librettist is Domenico David, while the music was composed by Giacomo Antonio Perti (1661-1756), whose name is not mentioned in the work. The drama had already been performed the previous year, in 1693, in the Teatro San Giovanni Crisostomo in Venice with music by Carlo Francesco Pollaroli. On that occasion the libretto had been printed in Venice by Nicolini, in an unillustrated edition in 12° format. These editions testify to the success of the opera, which deeply influenced Metastasio's libretto for the Siface (Naples 1723). London Thomas Bennet. SECOND ENGLISH EDITION 1694 (first published in 1692, the original French edition Voyage du Monde de Descartes first published in 1690). 8vo, approximately 185 x 115 mm, 7½ x 4½ inches, 16 woodcut images and diagrams in the text, pages: [16], 1-298, [6], with advert and errata on last prelim leaf, bound in full modern panelled speckled calf, gilt decorated raised bands, richly gilt in compartments, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. Gabriel Daniel (1649 - 1728) born in Rouen, was a French Jesuit scholar, author of books on history, philosophy and religion. In this book, called a romance by the translator and sometimes classed as science fiction, he visits the moon and explores the cosmos of rotating vortices hypothesized by Descartes circa 1640, a cosmos recently confirmed by studies of the origins of the solar system, of spiral galaxies, and of accretion disks around black holes. Pere Daniel's efforts are directed to satirising the Cartesian system and theories. See: Voyages in Space by George Locke, page12, No, 006. ESTC R29697. As a collector of ancient manuscripts, he published the first modern editions of a number of important texts. In 1620 Junius was employed by Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel, as a tutor to his son, and later as librarian. It was for Arundel, an avid collector of Greek and Roman art objects, that Junius wrote his De pictura veterum, a theoretical discussion of classical art and one of the cornerstones of the Neoclassical movement. De Pictura Veterum is divided in several books. One book is composed of classical texts on the arts and Junius' commentary on them. A second is an alphabetical list of quotations of the lives and works of artists of antiquity. Like other collections of classical quotations, De Pictura Veterum served scholars and rhetoriticians as a source for ancient thought. Junius' commentary to the inscriptions extended the scholarly content. The tome found a second important use, as well. The renaissance debate over the primacy of the arts--the written arts vs. the graphic arts--had once again come to the fore. The most recent dispute arose between the playwright Ben Jonson (1573-1637), and court architect Inigo Jones (1573-1652) for Charles I. In The Painting of the Ancients, Junius can be clearly read as siding with Jones and the supremacy of the visual arts. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hamburg, Gottfried Schultze & Benjamin Schiller, 1694. 4to. (88), 560, (10) pp. With woodcut Arabic half-title. Set in roman, italic and Arabic types with incidental fraktur, Greek and Hebrew. Contemporary vellum. First and only edition of Hinckelmann?s Arabic text of the Qur?an, the second edition of the Arabic Qur?an, the first actually available to readers and the only convenient edition before 1834, with a 36-page Latin introduction by the editor making extensive reference to the earlier literature. The first complete Arabic edition of the Qur?an was printed at Venice ca. 1537/38, intended for distribution in the Middle East, but the entire edition was thought to have been destroyed until one copy turned up in the 1980s. Hinckelmann?s edition was therefore the first edition available to European scholars, missionaries or Islamic readers. It was followed by Ludovico Marracci?s Arabic and Latin edition published at Padua in 1698, whose two folio volumes and extensive (anti-Islamic) commentary made it both expensive and inconvenient to use. The editions published at St Petersburg (from 1789) and Kazan (from 1803) for the use of Islamic groups in the Russian Empire were almost unknown in Europe, so the present edition remained the primary source for European knowledge of the Qur?an for 140 years, until Flügel?s 1834 Leipzig edition. VD17 has four different entries for this work, with different fingerprints, but they are all the same edition. - With bookplate on paste-down, covered behind the first endleaf, which is partially mounted to the paste-down, and an inscription on … [Click Below for Full Description]

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Originally written by a French diplomat, Edward Walsingham's 'Arcana Aulica' is an English translation and reworking of Eustache de Refuge's 'Treatise on the Court' which is an instruction manual on how to run and maintain a successful organized court. The advice given by Refuge, and edited by Walsingham, is still considered to be relevant today in political circles. Refuge encouraged bizarre and strange behaviors when interacting with others in the royal court - for instance. He notes that it is a common trick to stick your leg out and trip someone so that you can help them to their feet, which will earn you their gratitude. Refuge published this book during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and made references to successes in her court in England, even though the work was originally published in French. This 1694 English edition was published in London and features an added, engraved title page. [Attributes: First Edition]
