As a collector of ancient manuscripts, he published the first modern editions of a number of important texts. In 1620 Junius was employed by Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel, as a tutor to his son, and later as librarian. It was for Arundel, an avid collector of Greek and Roman art objects, that Junius wrote his De pictura veterum, a theoretical discussion of classical art and one of the cornerstones of the Neoclassical movement. De Pictura Veterum is divided in several books. One book is composed of classical texts on the arts and Junius' commentary on them. A second is an alphabetical list of quotations of the lives and works of artists of antiquity. Like other collections of classical quotations, De Pictura Veterum served scholars and rhetoriticians as a source for ancient thought. Junius' commentary to the inscriptions extended the scholarly content. The tome found a second important use, as well. The renaissance debate over the primacy of the arts--the written arts vs. the graphic arts--had once again come to the fore. The most recent dispute arose between the playwright Ben Jonson (1573-1637), and court architect Inigo Jones (1573-1652) for Charles I. In The Painting of the Ancients, Junius can be clearly read as siding with Jones and th … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Quran]
Hamburg, Gottfried Schultze & Benjamin Schiller, 1694. 4to. (88), 560, (10) pp. With woodcut Arabic half-title. Set in roman, italic and Arabic types with incidental fraktur, Greek and Hebrew. Contemporary vellum. First and only edition of Hinckelmann?s Arabic text of the Qur?an, the second edition of the Arabic Qur?an, the first actually available to readers and the only convenient edition before 1834, with a 36-page Latin introduction by the editor making extensive reference to the earlier literature. The first complete Arabic edition of the Qur?an was printed at Venice ca. 1537/38, intended for distribution in the Middle East, but the entire edition was thought to have been destroyed until one copy turned up in the 1980s. Hinckelmann?s edition was therefore the first edition available to European scholars, missionaries or Islamic readers. It was followed by Ludovico Marracci?s Arabic and Latin edition published at Padua in 1698, whose two folio volumes and extensive (anti-Islamic) commentary made it both expensive and inconvenient to use. The editions published at St Petersburg (from 1789) and Kazan (from 1803) for the use of Islamic groups in the Russian Empire were almost unknown in Europe, so the present edition remained the primary source for European knowledge of the Qur?an for 140 years, until Flügel?s 1834 Leipzig edition. VD17 has four different entries for this work, with different fingerprints, but they are all the same edition. - With bookplate on paste-down, covered behind the first endleaf, which is partially mounted to the paste-down, and an inscription on … [Click Below for Full Description]

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Originally written by a French diplomat, Edward Walsingham's 'Arcana Aulica' is an English translation and reworking of Eustache de Refuge's 'Treatise on the Court' which is an instruction manual on how to run and maintain a successful organized court. The advice given by Refuge, and edited by Walsingham, is still considered to be relevant today in political circles. Refuge encouraged bizarre and strange behaviors when interacting with others in the royal court - for instance. He notes that it is a common trick to stick your leg out and trip someone so that you can help them to their feet, which will earn you their gratitude. Refuge published this book during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and made references to successes in her court in England, even though the work was originally published in French. This 1694 English edition was published in London and features an added, engraved title page. [Attributes: First Edition]

Dawson, George [1637 - 1700].
London: Printed for Richard Chiswell, 1694. 1st edition (Lowndes, p. 604; Marvin, p. 257; Wing D-459). [28], 168, T.p. printed in red & black. Printed glosses. "Chap. X" begins new pagination & register, though text continuous. Folio. ^4 a - b^4 c^2 A - X^4; 2^A - 2D^4 2E^2. 32.5 cm x 20.5 cm. Early full brown calf, with a modern respining to style. Dark maroon gilt-lettered leather title label to spine second compartment. Stain to text-block lower corner gradually diminishing, with minor worming, primarily in the stained portion, affecting margins only. Lower outer margins of first few leaves neatly restored. Some other odd soiling, nothing obtrusive. A solid VG copy of an uncommon title. Item #30903 Per the DNB, Dawson "an English jurist, educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1658-9, M.A. in 1662, and was presented by his college to the vicarage of Sunninghill, Berkshire, where he died in 1700, aged 63." This his only known published work. Termed by some as 'ambitious, it have been described as "one of the most interesting, but now completely forgotten, treatises on natural law to be printed in late-seventeenth-century England. Despite its many qualities, the treatise was published, albeit very handsomely by Richard Chiswell, in a very limited edition... and it simply failed to reach the relevant audience", a circumstance which, no doubt, accounts for its scarcity in the modern antiquarian law market. MENAGE
Paris: Jean Anisson. Second edition, folio, pp. [112], 740, [12], 100, [2]; Caseneuve's Les Origines Francoise with separately printed title-p. and prelims; full contemporary calf, gilt spine; joints starting, top and bottom of spine chipped, internally clean, binding sound. First published in 1650 in 4to, and enlarged to folio in 1694. Menage (1613-1692), "a man of vast erudition and keen intuition," was one of the few in his day who had first hand knowledge of Old French and the early stages of other Romance languages (which he had gleaned from his studies of law and early legal documents) and was uniquely qualified to carry out such an etymological undertaking. But his sarcasm lead to his expulsion from the French Academy; he had many enemies and "suffered under the satire of Moliere and Boileau" (see Holmes, History of the French Language, 1938, p. 90; and Ency. Brit., 11th ed).

WIT, FREDERICK DE (1630-1706)
HET BEROEMDE AMSTERDAM, HANDELSSTAD VAN HOLLAND ?Amstelodami Celeberrimi Hollandiae Emporii Delineatio Nova?, kopergravure van de stad Amsterdam uit het stedenboek van Frederick de Wit, uitgegeven tussen 1694-1706. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 41 x 43 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Francisco Xavier Palavicino Villarasa
Juan Joseph Gillena Carrascoso, 1694. In-8º. (7)ff, 6ff. Woodcut vignette with coat of arms. Minor marginal wormholes at the top of the margins, without affecting the text. Bound in full old vellum. Villarasa was a Jesuit born in Valencia (Spain) in the seventeenth century, but then lived in New Spain. He went down in history for his defense of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, On January 26, 1691, on the day of Santa Paula, he delivered the sermon "La fineza mayor" in the chapel of the Convent of San Jerónimo. The sermon argues what is the greatest fineness of Christ, a controversial issue at that time, because the Letter of Atenagórica of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz had just been published by the Bishop of Puebla, Fernandez de Santa Cruz. The Atenagórica Letter refuted the proposal of the father Vieira, also Jesuit, that had said in his Sermon of the Mandate. The sermon of Palavicino was, in effect, a species of defense to Sor Juana. When the sermon was published, the Inquisition arrested him and prosecuted him. The sermon was removed from circulation on January 14, 1698, and Palavicino was expelled from the Society of Jesus on October 12, 1703 and was forbidden to say mass, preach and confess. Thomas Sydenham
London: 1694. Used! Please read description. The compleat method of curing almost all diseases: to which is added an exact description of their several symptoms 1st English edition By Thomas Sydenham 1694 Contemporary leather binding For a long time he was held in vague esteem for the success of his cooling (or rather expectant) treatment of small pox, for his laudanum (or the first form of tincture opium), and for his advocacy of the use of Peruvian bark in quartan agues. There were, however, those among his contemporaries who understood something of Sydenham's importance in larger matters than details of treatment and pharmacy, chief among them being the talented Richard Morton. Among other things Sydenham is credited with the first diagnosis of scarlatina and with the modern definition of chorea. After small-pox, the diseases to which he refers the most are hysteria and gout, his description of the latter (from the symptoms in his own person) being one of the classical pieces of medical writing. "The Compleat Method of Curing Almost all Diseases. To which is added, An Exact Description Of their several Symptoms. / Written in Latin, by Dr. Thomas Sydenham, And now faithfully Englished. / London, / Printed, and are to be Sold by Randal Taylor, near Stationers-hall, 1694."
