Avril, P.
Uytrecht [Utrecht], Anthony Schouten, 1694. Near square 4to (19.8 x 15.3 cm). Engraved title page, letterpress title page with woodcut vignette, [x], 191, [vi] pp., engraved plates. Later marbled wrappers, paper label with script title on the spine. Rare Dutch translation of a work first published in French in 1692. With a fine frontispiece by Thomas Doesburgh (active 1683-1714). "Philippe Avril was a Jesuit explorer of the Far East. He was born at Angoulême, France on 16 September 1654. Avril was a professor of philosophy and mathematics at Paris when he was dispatched to the Jesuit missions of China. Following the instructions of Ferdinand Verbiest, another Jesuit, then at Peking, he attempted an overland journey, and traveled for six years through Kurdistan, Armenia, Astrakhan, Persia, and other countries of eastern Asia. Arriving at Moscow, Avril was refused permission to pass through Tatary, and was sent by the Government to Poland, whence he made his way to Istanbul and from there went back to France. Though exhausted by disease, he set out again on a vessel, which was lost at sea. Avril presumably died in a 1698 shipwreck. Avril's journal and writings provide a significant amount of useful material for modern historians and demographers" (Wikipedia). According to Tiele his name is d'Avril. The engraved title states verscheide Staten by mistake. Plates (numbered after opposite pages): 18, 61, 148, 167. Old adhesion between pp. 24-25 with slight text loss; old oval stamp with book and key in the margin of p. London: Printed for Richard Cumblerand...; and Benjamin Bragg..., 1694, 1694. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 139 x 75 mms., pp. [xviii], 96, 73 - 104, 141 - 253 [254 blank, 255 - 260 adverts], including "Advertisement" leaf before title-page, recently rebound in full period-style calf, with borders in blind on covers, raised bands red morocco label; Advertisement leaf repaired at outer margin, top edge of several leaves shaved with occasional incursion into page number, E9 fore-margin slightly frayed, leaves B5, D5 and L4 missigned B4, D4 and K4 respectively, but a good copy. The anonymous author dedicates the work to John Meeres, probably not the printer whose dates ODNB gives as "1698 - 1761?". The author refers, however, to his performances as being made "worse by the mistakes of the Printer." The book's argument endorses the advantages of marriage over more irregular arrangements: "We may distinguish three sorts of persons, that are engaged in the shameful commerce of the flesh. The one seeks after it by inclination, and make it their chiefest good [sic]. Another sort continues it because they cannot get rid thereof, being retained as it were in sight of themselves by force and custom, and by the fatality of their temperature. The last apply themselves to it both by inclination and custom; but they look on this as a piece of gallantry and as a mode in Society which they are allowed to follow with others and without hazard." I-XXXVII. [Click Below for Full Description]

Tra gli autori censiti ricordiamo: Aldrovandi, F. Bacone, Barclay, Bellarmino, Bembo, Boccaccio, Boccalini, T. Brahe, Calvino, Campanella, Cardano, Chaucer, Copernico, Dante, Falloppio, Fernel, Galileo, Gassendi, Gesner, Grotius, Guicciardini, Harvey, van Helmont, Hobbes, Jansenius, Kimchi, Lascaris, Leonicenus, Lipsius, Lullus, P. He wrote a pioneering work of French history, Histoire de France depuis l'etablissement de la monarchie française (1713).A Voyage to the World of Cartesius is a fictionalized travel narrative with elements of science fiction and philosophy. It is "aimed principally at the sharp Cartesian distinction between body and soul, relates in a satirical fashion the voyage of the dismembodied souls of the narrator Mersenne and of another old friend of Descartes in the upper spheres [of outer space]. On their way to visit Descartes in the Third Heaven, they meet the souls of other philosophers, among them Aristotle, and later on Voetius, who serves as Aristotle's secretary.

In Seven Books. London: Printed for Richard Chiswell, 1694. [xxviii], 168, 219, [1] pp. Includes license leaf and one-page publisher catalogue. Complete. Folio (12" x 8"). Recent three-quarter calf over cloth, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, marbled endpapers added. Light rubbing to extremities with negligible minor wear in a few places, a few partial cracks to text block. Title page printed in red and black. Moderate toning to text, occasional faint dampstaing and light soiling to margins, soiling and some edgewear to preliminaries, which are just starting to detach at foot, early owner inscription to license leaf. An attractive copy of a scarce title. $950. * Only edition. In a survey of seventeenth century English legal literature Holdsworth observes that the least satisfactory books are those dealing with legal theory. Dawson's Origo Legum is the only notable exception. It remains, morever, "a very fair introduction to an academic study of law." It contains seven books: I. Law in General and Its Origin; of the Divers Kinds of Laws and the Law Eternal; II. What Laws Man is to Act By; III. Of Jus Gentium Civile or the Law of Nations; IV. Of the Jus Gentium Militare or the Law of Arms and War; V. Of the Jus Gentium Ecclesiasticum or the Laws and Govern … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philalethes, Eireæneus.
London: Printed and sold by T. Sowle, at the Crooked-Billet, in Holy-well-Lane Shoreditch, Anno 1694. Full leather binding with bands, antiquarian and worn somewhat; two small labels but no titles on spine; bookplate of the London Lodge; collated complete with the following anomalies - Tract I: pagination misnumbered between chapters III & IV, moving from page 48 to 65 but contiguous with the text. Tract III: first page should be numbered 149 but shows 151 (number 151 follows in right sequence) else, all is well. A VERY GOOD COPY with an unusual written work bound in at the front of volume on four leaves in an 18th century hand, probably 1730-40. This begins: "I have scribed that in your booke which it's probable you will not approve, however, if I can satisfy you that Common Mercury (symbol drawn) is our principle in the Work, is what you reported(?): I think this may plainly appear about pag(e)...." and it proceeds with an erudite explanation of the alchemical work through the next nine pages (with additional marginalia throughout the volume). I have not been able to identify the writer and the hand is somewhat cramped though readable. The writer was no wiseacre but someone with a keen knowledge of the methods of Alchemy.

PEAD, Deuel
London: Printed for Will. Newton, 1694. [16], 125pp, [1]. With initial imprimatur leaf and a cancel title leaf. Contemporary blind-ruled sheep, rubbed with a little loss to spine. Reducing stain to head of title, preliminaries and first 12 leaves, else a clean and crisp copy in an unsophisticated binding. Several ink inscriptions of 'John Cain his book 1763', to verso of A1 and final leaf, later inscription of 'J.H.L. Parker, 1940' to FFEP. A rare variant edition, with a cancel title, of an altogether uncommon work by acclaimed preacher Deuel Pead (1647-1727), Minister of St. James, Clerkenwell, known for high church leanings and encouraging his congregations to bow reverently at the name of Jesus. Pead's sermons were published with regularity between 1694 and 1719, and he is perhaps best remembered for his Annus victoriis mirabilis (London, 1706/7), a New Years Eve thanksgiving sermon occasioned by the Duke of Marlborough's victories in the War of the Spanish Succession. This present title, described as 'an abstract of some sermons Preach'd in...St James Clerkenwell' is scripturally based on Matthew XIII, 58, and was apparently his first published work. Pead had been, however, long recognised as an inspiring preacher; he was one of several young clergyman dispatched to Virginia in the seventeenth-century as part of Henry Compton, Bishop of London's attempt to establish Anglicanism in the New World. He served St. Peter's Parish, Henrico, and is recorded as having preached at Jamestown in 1686. [Quran].
1694. 4to. (88), 560, (10) pp. Latin title printed in red and black; Arabic (woodcut) and Latin half-titles, "Sententia Muhammedis" after title page. Preface in Latin, text in vocalized Arabic throughout. Contemp. vellum sewn on 3 vellum tapes through the joints, with ms. title to spine. First and only edition of Hinckelmann's Arabic text of the Qur'an, the second edition of the Arabic Qur'an, the first actually available to readers and the only convenient edition before 1834, with a 36-page Latin introduction by the editor making extensive reference to the earlier literature. The first complete Arabic edition of the Qur'an was printed at Venice ca. 1537/38, intended for distribution in the Middle East, but the entire edition was thought to have been destroyed until one copy turned up in the 1980s. Hinckelmann's edition was therefore the first edition available to European scholars, missionaries or Islamic readers. It was followed by Ludovico Marracci's Arabic and Latin edition published at Padua in 1698, whose two folio volumes and extensive (anti-Islamic) commentary made it both expensive and inconvenient to use. The editions published at St Petersburg (from 1789) and Kazan (from 1803) for the use of Islamic groups in the Russian Empire were almost unknown in Europe, so the present edition remained the primary source for European knowledge of the Qur'an for 140 years, until Flügel's 1834 Leipzig edition. - Binding slightly rubbed and stained, but well preserved. Interior in excellent condition, with the occasional minor spot, a near-imperceptible marginal water stain in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]
