DRYDEN, John
1694: Jacob Tonson. London: Jacob Tonson, 1694. First Edition. Small 4to. Pp. (12); 82; (2). Verso of half-title page features an advertisement for "The Works of Mr. John Dryden in Four Volumes," also published by Tonson. Four-page dedication (to the Earl of Salisbury) follows the title page. Play is complete with only minor foxing throughout. No tears or wormholes, but bottom corner of last leaf shows slight wear. Else Very Good. Bound early 20th C. by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Binding Fine. The remarkable condition of the interior, devoid of wormholes and egregious foxing, is unusual and is thus worthy of the elegant binding in which it is contained. This is Dryden's final play, which is noted for the inclusion of a song by Congreve. Indeed, Dryden foresook the stage for the purpose of undertaking his translation of Virgil. A contemporary reference to the reception of this play can be found in "The Plays and Poems of Shakespeare," (1790, vol. I pt. II, p. 141)wherein a citation in a letter reveals "it was damned by the universal cry of the town, nemine contradicente but the conceited poet." Despite such criticism, the care taken in the preservation of the copy at hand indicates the importance of the play and Dryden's place in the pantheon of English literature. MOLESWORTH, ROBERT.
. London 1694. Sm. 8vo. (24) + 172 pp. Later full speckled calf, spine with five raised bands. Last page with tear at edges slightly affecting text. Anonymously published. This edition has Roman numeral date in title; another edition has Arabic date. Rare pirate edition. * English diplomat and author. Born 1656, died 1725.
From 1689 to 1692, Molesworth was emissary from the Court of St. James to the court of the King of Denmark - a task at which he was not particularly successful, making himself unpopular among the leading notables of the Danish court (due to ideological as well as personal disagreements - but also due to the ambiguous foreign policy that Denmark was pursuing in this period).
In 1694, Molesworth published the book An Account of Denmark as it was in the Year 1692. The book was extremely critical of Danish absolutism, and of the perceived tyranny under which both the Danish army, church and general populace suffered.
An Account of Denmark emphasised the values of the English electoral system as an attractive alternative to absolutism, and was thus a Whig political tract, which indirectly influenced later American ideas on independence.
Molesworth's book was published in several editions, and in a number of languages. Several opposing tracts were published, with financial support from the Danish government..

In 1670, after nomination by Prince William of Orange, Morton was created a Doctor of Medicine at Oxford, afterward establishing a practice in London. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians 9 years later, eventually becoming one of the physicians-in-ordinary to the King. This work, possibly inspired by William III's respiratory problems, was dedicated to William, and Ôestablished his reputation at home and abroad for over a centuryÕ; Ôduring the reign of Queen Anne it was one of the text-books advised for reading by the apprentices of the Society of Apothecaries by private tutors in anatomy and pathologyÕ. Herein, Morton broke "with the very widespread prejudice against the use of anatomical dissection as a means of improving medical knowledge. As a result he was Ôthe first to describe the characteristic enlargement of the thoracic glands, in particular the tracheo-bronchial and broncho-pulmonary groups that were later to be shown to be of great significance in the pathogenesis of the diseaseÕ" (ODNB, also Trail, as quoted by ODNB). The work consists of "engraved gem illustrations mostly taken from the antique ... with annotations by Giovanni Bellori, the noted Italian antiquary... the text is little more than a factual explanation of the objects depicted, but the engravings are remarkable for 'relatively little detail' but done in a 'clever, fresh buoyant manner'" (Sinkankas quoting C. Dark maroon gilt-lettered leather title label to spine second compartment.. Stain to text-block lower corner gradually diminishing, with minor. worming, primarily in the stained portion, affecting margins only.. Lower outer margins of first few leaves neatly restored. Some other. odd soiling, nothing obtrusive. A solid VG copy of an uncommon title.. Per the DNB, Dawson "an English jurist, educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1658-9, M.A. in 1662, and was presented by his college to the vicarage of Sunninghill, Berkshire, where he died in 1700, aged 63." This his only known published work. Termed by some as 'ambitious, it have been described as "one of the most interesting, but now completely forgotten, treatises on natural law to be printed in late-seventeenth-century England. Despite its many qualities, the treatise was published, albeit very handsomely by Richard Chiswell, in a very limited edition... and it simply failed to reach the relevant audience", a circumstance which, no doubt, accounts for its scarcity in the modern antiquarian law market.

[Click Below for Full Description]

AGRIPPA, Heinrich Cornelius
London: printed by R. Everingham for R. Bentley, and Dan. Brown,, 1694. By Henry Cornelius Agrippa, Knight, Doctor of both Laws, Judge of the Prerogative Court, and Counsellour to Charles the Fifth, Emperour of Germany. Octavo (183 × 110 mm). Eighteenth-century sprinkled sheep, double green morocco labels, red morocco date label at foot, sides with double blind rules, red sprinkled edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece. Early ownership inscription at head of title ("Strathnaver", courtesy title of the heir of the earl of Sutherland). Spine worn at head, joints starting at foot but holding firm, an excellent copy. Third edition of the second English translation of Agrippa's De incertitudine et vanitate scientiarum (Antwerp, 1530), first translated into English by James Sanford (1569, repr. 1575), succeeded by this new seventeenth-century translation in 1676, 1684, and 1694. A highly influential work of Renaissance scepticism, De incertitudine et vanitate scientiarum is intended to bring the reader to a position of Christian fideism, though one in which Christian faith is thoroughly infused with Hermetic and Kabbalistic motifs. Agrippa's scepticism about science centres on the point that the senses are too often deceived; therefore "the way of truth is shut up from the senses", and sciences rooted in them are "uncertain, erroneous and deceitful". Appeals to authority are no more acceptable, as the scholastics reply to any questioning of their first principles with torture and execution of so-called heretics. "[A]t the beginning of the era of natural science, it is one … [Click Below for Full Description]
