Wotton, William (1666-1727)
London: Printed by J. Leake, for Peter Buck 1st edition, 1694. Hardcover. Good. Lord Chancellor Eldon's copy. Octavo panelled leather with corner stylized florettes (spine repaired with old leather laid on, leather loss to one florette, tips worn). Titlepage +[30]pp prelims +359pp. Front free endpaper inscribed "J. Scott e Coll: Univ. Oxon" with his later circular bookplate as Lord Chancellor & Earl of Eldon (1751-1838). Endpapers and first and last two leaves foxed. Some small worm holes to margins but nowhere near text. Printed shoulder and marginal notes and one page with underlining and Scott's MS marginal notes on Descartes. His successful rise through the legal ranks led to his appointment as Lord Chancellor in 1801 a post which he held far too long, more than 20 years.

[NETHERLANDS - STATES GENERAL - TREATY].
STCN (3 copies); WorldCat (6 copies mixing at least 2 eds.); cf. Knuttel 18367a. First edition of a treaty concluded between the Dutch States General and Abdullah bin Ismail (1694-1757), Sultan of Morocco on and off from 1734 to his death in 1757. The pamphlet is entirely in Dutch but the treaty itself was originally written in Spanish, to be translated into Arabic for posting in all Moroccan ports and published and posted (in Dutch) in lands under Dutch authority. The 23 articles of the treaty itself are followed by a form for the passports that Dutch ships were to carry, a note on the treaty's ratification at Fez, and a translation of a letter (originally in Arabic?) from the Sultan of Morocco to the States General. The treaty was negotiated by Mohamed Lucas, governor of Tétouan, acting for Morocco and Francisco and Louis Butler, granted power of attorney by the States General. With a few wrinkles and small marginal tears or chips, but still in very good condition and with generous margins, preserving the tranchefiles. First edition of an important document of trade relations between the Dutch Republic and Morocco.

[Hannay, Robert]:
London: R. Levis, 1694.. [4],16pp. Small quarto. Early 20th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Extremities lightly rubbed. Minor soiling and wear to text. Very good. A major rarity of 17th-century Philadelphia and New Jersey, this pamphlet relates details of the schism amongst the Quakers caused by George Keith. Keith (1639?- 1716) was an early and important convert to Quakerism, but then began an attempt to reform Quaker theology in the early 1690s during an extended sojourn in America. This sparked a famous controversy in Philadelphia, which fueled some of the earliest productions of the press in Philadelphia and New York, and led to the first trial of freedom of the press in America, decades before Zenger. Disowned by the Friends on both sides of the Atlantic, Keith returned to England and entered the Anglican church in 1700, later returning to America as an Anglican missionary. "Whether it was a long-brewing dispute or a short-term conflict is debated, but at the yearly meeting of Quakers in Philadelphia in 1691 a row occurred that caused much acrimony between Keith and his Quaker brethren. William Stockdale, one of the early Quaker settlers, accused Keith of heresy, of preaching two Christs because he overemphasized the two separate natures of the Saviour" - DNB. Tensions and events escalated in 1692 and 1693, fueled by Keith's published attacks, printed by Philadelphia's first printer, William Bradford. Keith and Bradford were then tried for sedition, but the case against them collapsed when the evidence - Bradford's set type of an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hermanni Witsii (Herman Witsius)
Franciscum Halman, Gulielmum van de Water - Utrecht 1694 - 6 1/2" x 8 1/4" x 2", 950 pages including 9 unnumbered pages of index. Beautifully but rather simply embossed with a Persian style medallion on a white sheepskin cover over boards with binding cords exposed at intervals along both sides of spine. Author and brief title in assumed period brown pen at top of spine. Cover is supple, square, tight and secure. Cover corners slightly curled but not worn. There are no splits anywhere and no wear to the edges. Inside front pastedown with miscellaneous pencil notations and bookplate of the locked section, Bucknell Library, Crozier Theological Seminary; oval stamps appear another few times throughout the text and at the end. There follow three free end papers, the title page with two black oval ink stamps for the seminary. Back of title page is blank but with pencil marks of the closed stacks. It appears a page has been removed following this page but I am unsure. The dedication page follows in Latin: "William III Great Britian, France and Scotland - King. Defender of the Realm.etc., etc. with 3 seminary stamps. Then 18 page dedication followed by a 13 page address to the members of his potential market dated N0V.13, 1693. 919 pages of numbered text follow. All pages edges with sprinkled spot decoration in red. There are no worm holes. This is a very pretty copy in fine structural condition.***** This was Herman Witsius'(1636-1708) most important work. First published in 1677, it went through many editions and continued to be one of the works meant to end the many schisms whi … [Click Below for Full Description]
