[Hannay, Robert]
London, 1694. Small quarto. Early 20th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Extremities lightly rubbed. Minor soiling and wear to text. Very good. A major rarity of 17th-century Philadelphia and New Jersey, this pamphlet relates details of the schism amongst the Quakers caused by George Keith. Keith (1639?- 1716) was an early and important convert to Quakerism, but then began an attempt to reform Quaker theology in the early 1690s during an extended sojourn in America. This sparked a famous controversy in Philadelphia, which fueled some of the earliest productions of the press in Philadelphia and New York, and led to the first trial of freedom of the press in America, decades before Zenger. Disowned by the Friends on both sides of the Atlantic, Keith returned to England and entered the Anglican church in 1700, later returning to America as an Anglican missionary. "Whether it was a long-brewing dispute or a short-term conflict is debated, but at the yearly meeting of Quakers in Philadelphia in 1691 a row occurred that caused much acrimony between Keith and his Quaker brethren. William Stockdale, one of the early Quaker settlers, accused Keith of heresy, of preaching two Christs because he overemphasized the two separate natures of the Saviour" - DNB. Tensions and events escalated in 1692 and 1693, fueled by Keith's published attacks, printed by Philadelphia's first printer, William Bradford. Keith and Bradford were then tried for sedition, but the case against them collapsed when the evidence - Bradford's set type of an inflammatory broadside - was drop … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bacon, Francis.
Impensis Johannis Justi Erythropili, excudebat Christianus Goezius, 1694. Simon Johann Arnold's edition of Bacon's collected works, translated into Latin from the original English, published simultaneously at Leipzig and Copenhagen. Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626), in addition to rising to the office of Lord Chancellor, was a prolific and lively-minded writer, noted by the Oxford Companion to English Literature as "capable of varied and beautiful styles" and as exhibiting "a peculiar magnificence and picturesqueness in much of his writing." This Opera is a more complete collection of Bacon's literary, scientific, and philosophical productions than the first, which was published in 1665. This offers evidence of early readership in form of underlining in ink and occasional marginal notations, confined to early portion of the tome.

Hooghe, Romeyn de (1645-1708)
R. auctor 1694"". [EN]"."Etching on six sheets of paper, hand coloured, framed (with transportation box), ca. 1100 x 1220 mm (six plates together). [Quran].
Hamburg, Gottfried Schultze & Benjamin Schiller, 1694.. 4to. (88), 560, (10) pp. Latin title printed in red and black; Arabic (woodcut) and Latin half-titles. Preface in Latin, text in vocalized Arabic throughout. Contemp. vellum with faded ms. spine.. The famous "Hamburg Koran": while not actually (as it was long considered) the first printed Qur'an ever, the first accessible printed edition of the Arabic text. Only in 1987 was a unique copy of Paganino de Paganinis's Venetian edition (c. 1538) rediscovered, a work whose press run either was destroyed immediately or was limited to the sole surviving specimen, apparently a proof copy (cf. A. Nuovo, "Il Corano arabo ritrovato", in: Bibliofilia LXXX, IX, 1987). Four years after the present edition, in 1698, Lodovico Marracci produced his own Qur'an, but its two big tomes were anything but easy to consult - hence, the Hamburg Koran remained "the only available and handleable" (Smitskamp) edition until the early 19th century. - Abraham Hinckelmann (1652-95), a Hamburg theologian, studied at Wittenberg and collected many Oriental manuscripts. He compiled a Quranic lexicon in manuscript and planned a Latin translation of the Koran, but this was never realised. - Some browning throughout; occasional pencil and ink notes in the text and extensive notes on flyleaves by previous owners. This the the more common variant with only one woodcut Arabic title. - Provenance: from the library of the German theologian Georg Detharding (1727-1813; cf. ADB V, 79) with his ownership to front flyleaf and lower pastedown; acquired in Berlin in 181 … [Click Below for Full Description]

FOX, GEORGE
London, Printed for Thomas Northcott, in George-Yard, in Lombard-Street. MDCXCIV. [1694]. George Fox(1624-1691) founder of the Society of Friends. "Born in Leicestershire and apprenticed to a shoemaker, he apparently had no formal schooling. In 1643 he parted fromfamily and friends and traveled in search of enlightenment. After long painful struggles he came in 1646 to rely on the `Inner Light of the Living Christ.' He forsook church attendance, dismissed contemporary religious controversies as trivial, and in 1647 began to preach that truth is to be found in God's voice speaking to the soul- -hence, `Friends of Truth' later abbreviated to `Friends.' In 1649 he was jailed for interrupting a Nottingham church service with an impassioned appeal from the Scriptures to the Holy Spirit as the authority and guide. In 1650 at Derby he was imprisoned as a blasphemer, and there a judge nicknamed the `Quakers,' after Fox had exhorted the magistrates to 'tremble at the word of the Lord.' .Fox spent six years in different prisons, sometimes under terrible conditions. He campaigned against the latter and against other social evils. His famous journal was published posthumously in 1694."--Douglas: The New Int'l Dict. of the Christian Church, pp.383- 384. We offer the 1694 First Edition of his Journal, indispensable for the study of his life and the early days of the Quakers. A scarce dictionary with around 1950 lexical and encyclopaedic entries dealing with all aspects of life deemed of interest to women, including long entries on fashion, clothing, cosmetics and beauty, courtship, men and "keeping house", together with sections on issues of morality titled "Secret lovers", "Women in men's clothing", "Books" ("The forbidding of idle books makes young people more curious to read them"), "Virgins", "Witches", "Womens phancies in child-bearing", "Whoring" ("causes a man to spend flesh for silver, till he becomes so lank and lean, that his legs are scarce able to support their late portly master"), and "Night-walkers and Divers" ("she opens her shop-windows when all other trades about to shut them"). Exceptionally fine double-page engraved map of New England, including Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and part of Virginiawith magnificent hand-colour, the scale, dedication and title each within elaborate rococo cartouches along the bottom edge, the land decorated with images of native American villages and wild animals, the ocean with war canoe (old vertical fold a little browned in the crease, remains of guard on verso). Initially compiled from numerous manuscript and printed sources, the map follows the general outline of Adriaen Block's chart of 1614 with the St. Lawrence River and Lake Champlain based on Champlain. Many European settlements are depicted with several English settlements appearing for the first time. Jansson's primary concern was "to produce a detailed and informative map of the Dutch province of New Netherland and the surrounding region. The result is a valuable historical source and as evocative a picture as any we have of North America between Jamestown and Quebec. Besides these two towns, the settlements on the Delawre (Zuydt), Hudson and Connecticut Rivers, those in the vicinity of Manhattan and … [Click Below for Full Description]
