GALLAND, Antoine
La Haye: Louis & Henry Van Dole, 1694. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Antoine Galland was a 17th-century French orientalist who is best known for his translation of 'Arabian Nights'. However, his push to expand Europe's appreciation for the orient extended beyond 'One Thousand and One Nights' to his own collection of Persian, Arab, and Turkish maxims entitled 'Les Paroles Remarquables'. 'The Remarkable Words and Maxims of Orientals' was first published in 1694 and saw immediate and widespread success, much in part to it being shorter than similar works of maxims. (Dew, p.186). This book is filled with clever sayings, witty jokes, and short anecdotes that, as Galland claims, come from 'the Orientals'. This first edition was an important piece in the development of Orientalism in France and makes mention of various French authors and poets, George Wheler's voyages, Amelot de la Houssaye's travel notes, and even a political testament from Cardinal Richelieu. [STATES GENERAL - TREATY - MOROCCO].
STCN 161081134; not in Knuttel. Second edition, published in several issues, of a treaty concluded between the Dutch States General and Abdullah bin Ismail (1694-1757), Sultan of Morocco on and off from 1734 to his death in 1757. The 23 articles of the treaty are followed by a form for the passports that Dutch ships were to carry, a note on the treaty's ratification at Fez, and a translation of a letter (originally in Arabic?) from the Sultan of Morocco to the States General. The treaty was negotiated by Mohamed Lucas, governor of Tétouan, acting for Morocco and Francisco and Louis Butler, granted power of attorney by the States General. It guarantees access, free trade and safety for ships of the States General and its subjects and their crews and passengers in ports under Moroccan authority. Goods they sell there are subject to the usual taxes, but military and shipbuilding supplies are exempt (gunpowder, timber, wheel-lock muskets etc.). The treaty was concluded on 21 November 1752/14 Muharram 1166. A further note says it was ratified at Fez on 4 December/28 Muharram and Sultan Abdullah's letter to the States General bears the same date. With a brief inscription on the title-page. Last two leaves detached and with worm holes, only slightly affecting the text. Otherwise a good copy.

The chart of the Mediterranean is the largest and most intricately decorated of the nine. The atlas is dedicated to William III (stadholder of the Netherlands and, after the Glorious Revolution of 1688, also king on the British throne). The map of the Mediterranean mentions a certain Hiob de Wildt and shows his family's coat of arms . Dr. Hiob de Wildt (1637-1704) was the first secretary of the Admiralty in Amsterdam, the largest and most powerful of the five Dutch admiralties at the time of the Dutch Republic. GALLAND, Antoine
Louis & Henry Van Dole. 1694 1ed Oriental Maxims of Arab Turkish Persian Wit Voyages Richelieu Galland Antoine Galland was a 17th-century French orientalist who is best known for his translation of ‘Arabian Nights’. However, his push to expand Europe’s appreciation for the orient extended beyond ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ to his own collection of Persian, Arab, and Turkish maxims entitled ‘Les Paroles Remarquables’. ‘The Remarkable Words and Maxims of Orientals’ was first published in 1694 and saw immediate and widespread success, much in part to it being shorter than similar works of maxims. (Dew, p.186). This book is filled with clever sayings, witty jokes, and short anecdotes that, as Galland claims, come from ‘the Orientals’. This first edition was an important piece in the development of Orientalism in France and makes mention of various French authors and poets, George Wheler’s voyages, Amelot de la Houssaye’s travel notes, and even a political testament from Cardinal Richelieu. Rotterdam panorama - Romeijn de Hooghe, Johannes de Vou, 1694/1778
[Click Below for Full Description]

Wall map of Rotterdam - Johannes de Vou + Romeijn de Hooghe, 1694
1694. FAMOUS WALL MAP OF ROTTERDAM Etching with engraving, printed on 6 sheets, made by Johannes de Vou and Romeijn de Hooghe in 1694. Coloured by a later hand. Size (print): 120 x 140 cm. (This is only the plan of Rotterdam without the profile, views of the city or coats of arms of mayors. If you are interested in the profile, we have it here.) Of all maps of Rotterdam, this plan by De Vou and De Hooghe is the best known and most spectacular. At the end of the 17th century Amsterdam, The Hague, Leiden, Delft and Haarlem already had respectable wall maps and Rotterdam did not want to stay behind. When making the map the city was measured, drawn and engraved by Johannes de Vou. Romeijn de Hooghe was responsible for the rich decoration. De Hooghe was a famous artist in his day and was awarded more than fl. 2.000 for his work, surveyor De Vou received less than fl. 100. When the map was finished the members of the town council were given a coloured and framed copy. Until 1711 we can trace expenditures for colouring of copies of the map. Nothing can be found that the map was ever sold, even if this was the intention in 1690. Of the 600 copies printed, a large number still remained in 1711. The municipality had ?atlases? made in 1744 from the loose sheets of maps still available. Also these atlases were given to city council members and higher city officers. According to a decree of 1777, two atlases needed to remain at hand at all time, probably to be available for official gifts. The very large scale of the map, the ?bird?s eye perspective? of the urban development inside and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam - Frederick de Wit, 1694-1706
1694. HET BEROEMDE AMSTERDAM, HANDELSSTAD VAN HOLLAND ?Amstelodami Celeberrimi Hollandiae Emporii Delineatio Nova?, kopergravure van de stad Amsterdam uit het stedenboek van Frederick de Wit, uitgegeven tussen 1694-1706. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 41 x 43 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Tournefort, Joseph Pitton de
An interesting 18th-century manuscript containing 201 pages of illustrations copied from botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort's landmark work Élémens de botanique, first published in 1694. The manuscript was meant to be used as a practical reference -- "ad usum descriptoris inficeti" "for use as a rough/crude delineator", as the title puts it. It begins with a sixteen page index, each species is clearly labelled, pages are numbered, and occasional notes about the plants are included. The drawings are delicate, using fine cross-hatching to create depth, and most species are instantly recognisable. Flowers, buds, seed pods, leaves, and roots are all represented depending on their importance in identification, and many of the illustrations depict a sequence, such as the development the flower or seed pods over time (though comparison with the original illustrations shows that some stages were left out for brevity). Among the most elaborate illustrations are passionflower, lilly, nigella (love-in-a-mist), peony, argemone (prickly poppy), crown imperial fritillary, and iris. The compiler was most likely a Jesuit, as the half title features the Christogram of the Society of Jesus. The naturalist on whose work this manuscript is based, Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708), studied botany with Pierre Magnol in Montpellier, obtained a medical degree in Paris, and became a demonstrator at the Jardin du Roi in Paris. Throughout his career de Tournefort made extensive collecting trips across southern Europe and the Levant, travelling as far as Oxford in 1687. His most important cont … [Click Below for Full Description]

A further note says it was ratified at Fez on 4 December/28 Muharram and Sultan Abdullah's letter to the States General is given the same date. With a small inscription on the title-page. Last two leaves detached and worm holes, only slightly affecting the text. Otherwise a good copy.

[Click Below for Full Description]
