[Patkul.] SOOP, Eric.
(Riga, 1694). Folio. Ettbladstryck. Vikt, med ett minimalt hål i vecket. Tagen ur band och monterad på papper i övre vänsterkant, liten reva i övre vänstra hörnet. Ej i VD17.

Epictetus
Einsiedeln, Switzerland: Henrico Ebersbach, 1694. First polyglot edition in vernacular languages of the Stoic classic Enchiridion, in an unusual early Italian painted vellum binding. Born a slave, and crippled early in life, Epictetus gained his freedom in Rome and moved to the Adriatic coast, where he opened a school of philosophy. His sayings were collected by his student Arrian, and edited into the handbook of moral philosophy known as the Enchiridion. Epictetus understood philosophy as an active pursuit, more difficult than the abstract exercise of logic: "Do you think that you can act as you do, and be a philosopher? . . . You must watch, you must labor, you must get the better of certain appetites, must quit your acquaintance, be despised by your servant, be laughed at by those you meet" (Carter translation). Epictetus's emphasis on self-knowledge and self-discipline greatly impressed the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who quotes him at length in the Meditations, and his philosophy was read across Renaissance Europe, inspiring the Neostoicism movement and influencing the likes of Pascal and Descartes. While editions of the Enchiridion appeared in many languages, this is the first edition to contain multiple vernacular languages in a single publication: Spanish, German, Italian, and French. W.A. Oldfather, in Contributions toward a Bibliography of Epictetus, describes this polyglot edition as "extremely rare" (560). This copy is from the library of eighteenth-century Milanese collector Marquise Luigi Sylva, whose books are immediately identifiable by the exuberant hand-pain … [Click Below for Full Description]

munich: 1694. From the library of Christopher Isherwood with his ownership signature dated Oxford Dec 1926.The parallels between Isherwood and Petronius are compelling. The protagonist of A Single Man, Isherwood's day-in-the-life of a late-middle-aged college professor grieving the loss of his longtime lover, has been described as "the first forthright, non-neurotic, unapologetic gay character the literary world had seen since Petronius".Isherwood's earlier documentation of the Weimar Republic in his Berlin Stories mirrors the moral decline of Nero's Rome portrayed in the Satyricon.#2087036

BENOIST, Elie
1694. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Elie Benoist was a 17th-century French Protestant, most known for his perspectives on the Edict of Nantes. His book on the Edict of Nantes was an enormous undertaking and was published over the course of three years at the end of the 1600s. Of this book, Charles Johnston, Benoist's biographer, states: "To this undertaking Benoist brought the advantages of a solid education, a capacity for meticulous detail and painstaking research, integrity in the use of his sources, and a desire to be fair while acknowledging his ardent desire to vindicate his people." This rare first English edition was translated by Edward Cooke. According to Lowndes, "For this work the publisher obtained a license from Queen Mary, dated 30 June 1963. The only book for which she ever granted a license." (Lowndes 1647). [Attributes: First Edition]

FER, NICOLAS DE (16461720)
EEN VAN DE MEEST BEELDBEPALENDE FRANSE WANDKAARTEN VAN DE WERELD ?Mappe-Monde ou Carte Generale de la Terre divisee en deux Hemispheres . . . ? [Click Below for Full Description]

Item #33788 In 1670, after nomination by Prince William of Orange, Morton was created a Doctor of Medicine at Oxford, afterward establishing a practice in London. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians 9 years later, eventually becoming one of the physicians-in-ordinary to the King. This work, possibly inspired by William III's respiratory problems, was dedicated to William, and 'established his reputation at home and abroad for over a century'; 'during the reign of Queen Anne it was one of the text-books advised for reading by the apprentices of the Society of Apothecaries by private tutors in anatomy and pathology'. Herein, Morton broke "with the very widespread prejudice against the use of anatomical dissection as a means of improving medical knowledge. As a result he was 'the first to describe the characteristic enlargement of the thoracic glands, in particular the tracheo-bronchial and broncho-pulmonary groups that were later to be shown to be of great significance in the pathogenesis of the disease'" (ODNB, also Trail, as quoted by ODNB). London: Printed for Richard Chiswell, 1694. 1st edition (Lowndes, p. 604; Marvin, p. 257; Wing D-459). [28], 168, T.p. printed in red & black. Printed glosses. "Chap. X" begins new pagination & register, though text continuous. Folio. ^4 a - b^4 c^2 A - X^4; 2^A - 2D^4 2E^2. 32.5 cm x 20.5 cm. Early full brown calf, with a modern respining to style. Dark maroon gilt-lettered leather title label to spine second compartment. Stain to text-block lower corner gradually diminishing, with minor worming, primarily in the stained portion, affecting margins only. Lower outer margins of first few leaves neatly restored. Some other odd soiling, nothing obtrusive. A solid VG copy of an uncommon title. Item #30903 Per the DNB, Dawson "an English jurist, educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1658-9, M.A. in 1662, and was presented by his college to the vicarage of Sunninghill, Berkshire, where he died in 1700, aged 63." This his only known published work. Termed by some as 'ambitious, it have been described as "one of the most interesting, but now completely forgotten, treatises on natural law to be printed in late-seventeenth-century England. Despite its many qualities, the treatise was published, albeit very handsomely by Richard Chiswell, in a very limited edition... and it simply failed to reach the relevant audience", a circumstance which, no doubt, accounts for its scarcity in the modern antiquarian law market. CLEMENT I, Pope
1694. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Do we then think it to be a great and marvelous thing, if the Creator of the universe shall bring about the resurrection of them that have served Him with holiness in the assurance of a good faith, seeing that He showeth to us even by a bird the magnificence of His promise?" - Clement I, Epistles Clement I, considered the first Apostolic Father of the Catholic Church, was pope during the first century AD and known for his epistles to the church at Corinth. This letter is perhaps the earliest Christian document written after the New Testament. Much like the letter Saint Paul wrote to the Corinthians, Clement I called for immediate repentance and an obedience to church authority. It offers an insight to what the early Christian church valued and how it was affected by the Roman Church. This letter is also one of the earliest works to make a clear distinguishing between bishops, presbyters, and deacons. This 1694 printing is paired with the second epistle of Clement, however, this sermon was not written by Clement. Scholars believe that this homily was not written until the second century. Printed in Greek and Latin on parallel pages. [Attributes: First Edition]

MACHIAVELLI, Niccolo
Amsterdam: A. Wetstein, 1694. 1692 Machiavelli PRINCE Italian Renaissance Philosophy Politics French Amelot"The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him." ― Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli is one of the most important figures in 15th- and early 16th-century Renaissance philosophy. His works helped define what has become political science. His most famous work "The Prince" has infamously coined the term 'Machiavellianism' regarding politics and dishonest politicians. It has often been considered the first work of modern philosophy, mostly because it conflicts so strongly with Catholic doctrines concerning politics and ethics at the time.In 'The Prince,' Machiavelli treads a line between accepting tyranny and supporting free republic. He advises leaders on 'acceptable' tyranny, justifying many immoral actions taken by kings and princes; however, this point likely was written to encourage medieval Catholicism to be less strict in their relationship with the law. Ultimately, Machiavelli was seeking to provide rulers with a guide on how to be accepted by their subjects - however necessary - be it commanding respect, demanding actions through law, using bribery, or even imparting fear. This 1692 French edition includes the famous commentary of Abraham-Nicolas Amelot de La Houssaye.Item number: #6392Price: $599MACHIAVELLI, NiccoloLe prince de Machiavel.
