1694 - Typus Orbis Terrarum (Map of the World) Issued 1661-94 Wolfenbut., Germany by Herman Mosting. Fine and interesting late 17th century antique map. Note the distorted western bulbous shape of North America, The entire northwest region blank aside from the place names Anian and Quivira, both with long lineages. Norumbega across New England, Florida & Virginia named as is Apalechem". Korea is shown as an island. All sorts of rivers and mountainous terrain within Africa. A huge undefined southern continent stretches across both maps, at times nearly touching South America as well as Java (!). Only a vague speculative outline shape assigned to Australia in the western portion of the continent, Sheet remains well preserved, extra wide blank margin across the bottom. Original fold lines as issued. Sheet measures c. 13" x 8 1/4". Printed area measures c. 12" x 6 1/2". Oblong Folio. Titus Petronius Arbiter.
Köln (d. i. Amsterdam? Paris?), Pierre Marteau 1694. VD17 12:626584N, Gay /Lemonnier 3,721. Weller,Druckorte II,55. Kindler 19,8458. NBG 38,168 - vielleicht frühester Druck dieser v. Francois Nodot (erw. Dr. Simon Popper, Vater d. bekannten Philosophen Sir Karl Popper Tome 1.2. 12°. (2 Bde). Gest. Frontisp., Titelbl., 29 nn. Bll., 473 S., mit 2 gest. Taf., 2 unbedr. [Quran]
Hamburg, Gottfried Schultze & Benjamin Schiller, 1694. 4to. (88), 560, (10) pp. Latin title printed in red and black; Arabic (woodcut) and Latin half-titles. Preface in Latin, text in vocalized Arabic throughout. Contemp. vellum with faded ms. spine. The famous "Hamburg Koran": while not actually (as it was long considered) the first printed Qur'an ever, the first accessible printed edition of the Arabic text. Only in 1987 was a unique copy of Paganino de Paganinis's Venetian edition (c. 1538) rediscovered, a work whose press run either was destroyed immediately or was limited to the sole surviving specimen, apparently a proof copy (cf. A. Nuovo, "Il Corano arabo ritrovato", in: Bibliofilia LXXX, IX, 1987). Four years after the present edition, in 1698, Lodovico Marracci produced his own Qur'an, but its two big tomes were anything but easy to consult - hence, the Hamburg Koran remained "the only available and handleable" (Smitskamp) edition until the early 19th century. - Abraham Hinckelmann (1652-95), a Hamburg theologian, studied at Wittenberg and collected many Oriental manuscripts. He compiled a Quranic lexicon in manuscript and planned a Latin translation of the Koran, but this was never realised. - Some browning throughout; occasional pencil and ink notes in the text and extensive notes on flyleaves by previous owners. This is the more common variant with only one woodcut Arabic title. - Provenance: from the library of the German theologian Georg Detharding (1727-1813; cf. ADB V, 79) with his ownership to front flyleaf and lower pastedown; acquired in Berlin in 1813 b … [Click Below for Full Description]

SHERLOCK, William
William Rogers, London, 1694. 394 p. 21 cm full leather, respined with raised bands and red title label with gold lettering. Leather edges rubbed, hinges cracked. Scuffing to boards. Light stain on pages 243-7. Wormhole damage to upper margin throughout text but no effect on text which remains clean for reading. Paper bright with spotting and staining only to endpapers. Sherlock had no sympathy with the mystical side of Puritan theology, and as such treated its phraseology with ridicule. He attacked John Owen, D.D. [q.v.], who had affirmed that divine mercy was known only through Christ. Owen replied; and Sherlock's ridicule was resisted by other nonconformists, especially Thomas Danson [q.v.] ("Debate between Satan and Sherlock"), and Vincent Alsop [q.v.], whose "Anti-sozzo" brought against Sherlock the groundless charge of Socinianism, and established Alsop's reputation as a master of broad and effective sarcasm. In 1680 Sherlock commenced D.D.; he was collated on 3 Nov. 1681 to the prebend of St. Pancras in St. Paul's Cathedral, was lecturer at St. Dunstan's-in-the-West, and was made master of the Temple in 1685. à Paris: chez Florenti et Pierre Delaulne., 1694. Fine. chez Florenti et Pierre Delaulne., à Paris 1694, pet. in 12 (8,5x13,8cm), (58) 354 pp (12)., relié. - First Edition? A similar edition was published on the same date by the same publisher, but in a slightly larger format, with a different snack, a flagship of different title and without title page red and black. This edition may be a counterfeit. A frontispiece representing Harlequin. Uncommon. Vellum half later. Smooth spine with respect to the red pen. Arlequiniana, which remains a literary curiosity, belongs to a prominent genre of French literature, born in the late seventeenth and flourishing in the first half of the eighteenth it comes to these collections of jokes or stories pleasant or Ana which can be entered with the birth in 1693 Menagiana This kind has the distinction of staging his own author and dialogue with the reader, it seems to have no other purpose than to entertain as it seeks to educate because in this age of censorship, literature created this seemingly light but satirical critique of society and manners mode. Charles Cotolondi wrote several books in this field, including Evremonmania. Harlequin, thanks to the famous theater of the Fair in Paris became very famous and was a kind, and it is deliberately Cotolondi actually a kind of wise fool, like a Scapin for Molière. The set is a series of conversations that combines stories and jokes. As might be expected in a book of this age there is the occasional mark and a couple of annotations - a single line in ink marking a paragraph on pages 4, 7 & 8 and light browning to pages edges but otherwise the text block is in remarkably good condition, incorrect page numbering at leaf numbered 189 which is numbered 192 to verso. MENAGE, [GILLES]
Paris: Jean Anisson, 1694. Second edition, folio, pp. [112], 740, [12], 100, [2]; Caseneuve's Les Origines Francoise with separately printed title-p. and prelims; full contemporary calf, gilt spine; joints starting, top and bottom of spine chipped, internally clean, binding sound. First published in 1650 in 4to, and enlarged to folio in 1694. Menage (1613-1692), "a man of vast erudition and keen intuition," was one of the few in his day who had first hand knowledge of Old French and the early stages of other Romance languages (which he had gleaned from his studies of law and early legal documents) and was uniquely qualified to carry out such an etymological undertaking. But his sarcasm lead to his expulsion from the French Academy; he had many enemies and "suffered under the satire of Moliere and Boileau" (see Holmes, History of the French Language, 1938, p. 90; and Ency. Brit., 11th ed).
