London, Printed for Richard Baldwin 1694. - Four vols. in three, 12mo., pp. [8], clvi, [38], 230; viii, 9-208; [2], 430, [12]; [6], xiii, [4, erroneously paginated], xii-cxliv, [40], 272; wanting Book V (Wing R 104A); very good copies in uniform contemporary mottled calf, red morocco labels; nineteenth-century Levenside booklabels.First editions of Books 3 and 4, second (or third) edition of Books 1 and 2, evidently issued together, wanting Book 5 (also 1694, separately paginated). Urquhart's translation (of Books 1-3), completed by Motteux, has been called 'the finest translation ever made from one language into another' (Charles Whibley, Studies in Frankness 1898).Books 1-2, translated by the eccentric Scot Thomas Urquhart, were first published in 1653, and the sheets reissued with a new title-page and an inserted Life of Rabelais in 1664. The present edition added a lengthy Preface by Motteux (pp. xli-clvi), 'wherein is given an Account of the Design and Nature of this Work and a Key to some of its most difficult Passages', as well as commendatory verses by e.g. Nahum Tate. Book 3, translated by Urquhart but not published in his lifetime, appeared here for the first time, again with a lengthy explanatory text by Motteux.Though sets thus composed were evidently available (and were advertised in the Term Catalogue for Michaelmas 1694), they are rarely found complete, and all volumes are separately listed in Wing. Books 2 and 3 were popularly known as 'The Second Volume' and Books 4 and 5 as 'The Third Volume'. Even here, where the binding is contemporary, it was evidently … [Click Below for Full Description]

Petronius Arbiter [.
London: Printed for Samuel Briscoe 1694. William Burnaby (1673-1706) was a playwright and translator. He attended Merton College, Oxford. Together with an anonymous collaborator he gave his translation of Satyricon an Òidiomatic restoration flavorÓ (Oxford DNB). Franois Nodot (1650-1710) was a French mercenary soldier and author of works in Latin and French, though he is best known for his supplements to the text of the Satyricon. In 1692, he announced to the French academies that he had a copy of previously unknown sections of the Satyricon. The copy had been made from a manuscript found by his friend Du Pin during the siege of Belgrade in 1668. Nodot published a new edition of the Satyricon in Paris in 1693. Though the forgery was soon suspected, texts and translations of the Satyricon continued to incorporate NodotÕs supplements until the early twentieth century. Octavo. [15], [1, blank], 136, 140, [+4, ads] pp. Contemporary calf. Edges sprinkled red. Binding extremities lightly worn in places. Lacks free endpapers. Chip and small tear to gutter margin of A8. The occasional minor dampstain. Bookplate of Robert S. Pirie (1934-2015) on front pastedown. A very good, tight copy. First edition in English of the Satyricon. The translator is William Burnaby. The original work was composed in Latin, and scholars date its composition at the first century A.D. The fragments that were reportedly found at Belgrade and printed in the present edition are actually a forgery by Franois Nodot (1650-1710). (See Wing P1880, which contains NodotÕs letter to Franois Charpentier, president … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hinckelmann, Abraham.
4to. (12) pp. Disbound. First printing of this polemical apology against Johann Friedrich Mayer. The Saxon theologian and orientalist Abraham Hinkelmann (1652-95) became deacon of St. Nikolai in Hamburg in 1685; in spite of sharp criticism by his Hamburg adversaries, who attacked him for his sympathy for Spener and Pietism, he was made head pastor of St. Catharine's in 1689. "But when in 1690 and especially in 1693 the well-known Pietist disputes broke out in Hamburg, Hinckelmann and his friends Winckler and Horbius were attacked by the notorious Johann Friedrich Mayer (a former friend from Wittenberg) and his associaties in a way that defies description" (cf. ADB 12, 461). Hinckelmann was also an exegete of Jakob Böhme's; his special contribution to scholarship is his preparation of the first complete printed Arabic Qur'an, also printed in 1694. - Contemp. ms. note regarding the year of printing on t. p.
