Ex officinâ Johan. Hayes, celeberrimæ Academiæ typographi. Impensis Richardi Green bibliopolæ Cantab., Cambridge: 1694 - Folio: [8], lvi, 330; [2], 529, [43 ] p. Fabricius observes that ?the text is accurately revised and printed, the metrical rules of Canter diligently corrected, and the entire ancient scholia on the first seven plays subjoined and enriched by excerpta from a manuscript in Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The notes of various learned men, and those of Barnes accompany the scholia; the fragments of Euripides are carefully collected and displayed, with Greek and Latin notes as far as verse 2068; lastly, there are some epistles, attributed to Euripides.??(Dibdin, 2nd ed.) Wing E 3415; Schweiger p. 115, col 2 Bound in contemporary English calf, rebacked preserving the original spine. The boards are blind-ruled in compartments; there is an attractive red morocco lettering piece, gilt, on the spine. Aside from light wear and bumping to the corners, the binding is very well preserved. Internally, this copy is in excellent condition throughout. The Greek text is surrounded by the Greek scholia and flanked by a Latin translation, in smaller type. The second part is introduced by a divisional title page FIRST EDITION of Joshua Barnes?

Plate: 'De Chirurgyn.' (The Surgeon). It shows a surgeon kneeling in front of a seated man, while treating a cut in his leg. Two assistants attend holding bowls. Engraving and etching combination on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: This scarse original antique print originates from: 'Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf' (Mirror of Human Activities.) or 'Iets voor Allen.' (Something for everyone.). In 1694 the Amsterdam artists Jan and Casper Luyken published their celebrated work 'Spiegel van het Menselyk Bedryf.', a collection of one hundred fine engravings depicting the arts and crafts. Each print is depicting a particular occupation, with the name of the profession, one or two explanatory lines above the plate and followed by a six-line poem below. The book was an instant success and was reprinted many times up to 1767. Other printers and booksellers tried to gain profit from the popular best seller as well. The first of many pirated editions appeared as soon as 1695. As such the work by Abraham de St. Clara who published: 'Etwas fur Alle .' or 'Iets voor Allen' (Something for everyone.) in several editions from 1699 on in both German and Dutch, is best known. This work had 200 engravings, including many, mostly in reverse, after the Luyken prints mentioned above. We carry many of these prints as well. Please inquire if you are looking for a particular profession, but cannot find it.Artists and Engravers: Jan Luyken (1649-1712) belonged to the best engravers of the period. His son Casper (1672-1708) assisted with the making of the prints. Abraham a Sancta Clara (16 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Provenance: Armorial book-plate of The Right Hon. Alexander [Hume-Campbell] Lord Polwarth, 2nd Earl of Marchmont. In 1620, Franciscus Junius (1591- 1677), was employed by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, as a tutor to his son, and later as librarian. It was for Arundel, an avid collector of Greek and Roman art objects, that Junius wrote his De Pictura Veterum, a theoretical discussion of classical art. If forms one of the cornerstones of the Neoclassical movement, and was praised by both Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony Van Dyck. De Pictura Veterum is divided in several books. One book is composed of classical texts on the arts and Junius' commentary on them, and the second forms an alphabetical list of quotations of the lives and works of artists of antiquity. The work was also important in the continuing debate in the primacy of the arts - the written arts vs. the graphic arts - which had once again come to the fore. Nürnberg, Endter Söhne, 1694). - 15 (statt 16) Bll., 1045 S. Eine von 2 Ausgaben im Jahr der Erstausgabe. - VD17 23:639637Z. [Click Below for Full Description]

Gabriel Daniel (1649 - 1728) born in Rouen, was a French Jesuit scholar, author of books on history, philosophy and religion. In this book, called a romance by the translator and sometimes classed as science fiction, he visits the moon and explores the cosmos of rotating vortices hypothesized by Descartes circa 1640, a cosmos recently confirmed by studies of the origins of the solar system, of spiral galaxies, and of accretion disks around black holes. Pere Daniel's efforts are directed to satirising the Cartesian system and theories. See: Voyages in Space by George Locke, page 12, No. 006. ESTC R29697.
