[Quran].
1694. 4to. (88), 560, (10) pp. Latin title printed in red and black; Arabic (woodcut) and Latin half-titles, "Sententia Muhammedis" after title page. Preface in Latin, text in vocalized Arabic throughout. Contemp. vellum sewn on 3 vellum tapes through the joints, with ms. title to spine. First and only edition of Hinckelmann's Arabic text of the Qur'an, the second edition of the Arabic Qur'an, the first actually available to readers and the only convenient edition before 1834, with a 36-page Latin introduction by the editor making extensive reference to the earlier literature. The first complete Arabic edition of the Qur'an was printed at Venice ca. 1537/38, intended for distribution in the Middle East, but the entire edition was thought to have been destroyed until one copy turned up in the 1980s. Hinckelmann's edition was therefore the first edition available to European scholars, missionaries or Islamic readers. It was followed by Ludovico Marracci's Arabic and Latin edition published at Padua in 1698, whose two folio volumes and extensive (anti-Islamic) commentary made it both expensive and inconvenient to use. The editions published at St Petersburg (from 1789) and Kazan (from 1803) for the use of Islamic groups in the Russian Empire were almost unknown in Europe, so the present edition remained the primary source for European knowledge of the Qur'an for 140 years, until Flügel's 1834 Leipzig edition. - Binding slightly rubbed and stained, but well preserved. Interior in excellent condition, with the occasional minor spot, a near-imperceptible marginal water stain in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

OZANAM, Jacques.
Paris : Jean Jombert, 1694 Deux volumes in-8, (32)-400-(16)-303-(8)-163 pages et 84 planches. Baillie, Clocks & watches, p. 122 : "A very famous book, written by a man of great ability" ; Wellcome IV, 279 ; Caillet III, p. 215.

[Patkul.] SOOP, Eric.
(Riga, 1694). Folio. Ettbladstryck. Vikt, med ett minimalt hål i vecket. Tagen ur band och monterad på papper i övre vänsterkant, liten reva i övre vänstra hörnet. Ej i VD17.

First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Unpaginated. 38.5 cm Folio rebound in half-leather with marbled boards. Blind stamps at top of title page. Moderate spotting, thumbing and damp stains. Some worm holes at bottom of "A" pages. Attempt to repair a tear on p. CHA. Repair to CRA. Ink notations on pp. COL and JES. This first historical "dictionary" in English was authored by "several Learned Men" but credit is given to "the best Historians, Chronologers, and Lexicographers" on the title page. The text consists of a compilation of the major classical dictionaries in Latin and French. It is an enlarged English translation of the sixth edition of Louis Moreri's Grand Dictionaire published in Lyon in 1674, itself corrected and enlarged by Le Clerk. Not a dictionary in the modern sense, it is more of an encyclopedia of historical figures and famous places. Canada, for example, is "a great Country in America Septentrionalis [ie. North America] which is also named New France, because the French possess the better part of it, and have divers Colonies there."

COTOLONDI Charles
- chez Florenti et Pierre Delaulne., à Paris 1694, pet. in 12 (8,5x13,8cm), (58) 354 pp (12)., relié. - Prima edizione? [Click Below for Full Description]

LOTTERY. (HATFIELD, Thomas?)
n.p. [c.1694?] Copper lottery token, 3cm diameter. On one side stands the figure of Justice, scales in right hand and raised sword in left; on the obverse the lettering 'THE BEST / AND FAIREST / CHANCE AT / LAST'; the figure of Justice is sl. worn at the raised extremities. v.g.T.C. Noble's A Brief History of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers ... (London, 1889) notes that in 1694 the company temporarily leased their hall for a lottery, which was called 'the best and fairest chance at last' (p.49). John Nicholl's Some Account of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers goes further, stating 'the Lottery was instigated by a Mr Thomas Hatfield and was drawn at the Hall of the Ironmongers' Company. Hatfield hired the Hall for eight days at a guinea a day and the Company also received five tickets'. A scarce early lottery token, apparently dating from 1694, the year the state lottery was introduced in England. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK and the EU, this item is subject to VAT.

Early ownership entry at ffep; title and final 10 leaves somewhat browned, leaf edges mildly toned throughout, tears at top edge 3 leaves resulting in partial loss of headline, and several words on each of two lines pp.93-94, marginal worm traces at final 10 leaves (not affecting text). Else a good, generally crisp and clean copy. ¦ Reissue of the first edition, with a cancel title page and the addition of an appendix. Unlike the two earlier editions of 1681 and 1684, the present issue does not call for a portrait. ¦ The polymath William Salmon (1644-1713) became Òone of the earliest and most successful writers on popular science and medicineÓ (Heirs of Hippocrates), producing translations and compendia in the areas of anatomy, surgery, pharmacology, botany, mathematics, astrology and alchemy. His fine library of over 3500 books was dispersed at his death in a series of sales by Thomas Ballard. Upon the testimony of the auction catalogue, Ferguson judged Salmon Òa man of erudition, and of wide and liberal tastes... [as well as] a thoroughgoing bibliophileÓ(Bibl. Chemica II, p.319). In the present work Salmon draws upon such earlier celebrities as Matthaeus Platearius, Martin Ruland, Thomas Willis, and Abraham Zacutus. ESTC R-32081. Wing (2nd ed.) S-433.

CERF, J. de.
Oval miniature portrait painting of the acclaimed French Enlightenment author Voltaire (1694-1778), showing him in one of his favourite poses: sitting with a book in his hand in front of a bookcase. The portrait is signed at the back "'J. de Cerf A[nn]o 1687", which is an obviously erroneous date. A modern note on the back suggests that the artists is the obscure painter Louis Le Cerf, an artist working at Grenoble around 1735. The portrait itself is in very good condition, but the frame has lost most of his gilding.
