Roterodami, typis Regneri Leers 1694 - Pp. (24) 296 (20). Unito a: JUNIUS FRANCISCUS. Ritratto a piena pagina dell'Autore. Legatura coeva in piena pelle; dorso a sei nervi con titoli su tassello e ricchi fregi in oro agli scomparti, dentelles dorate e sguardie in bella carta marmorizzata. Tagli spruzzati e segnalibro in seta azzurra.

89, [7], 147, [3] pagine. 19x12 cm.Rilegatura in piena pergamena. Bruniture.

The composer, Giacomo Antonio Perti (1661-1756), is not mentioned. The author of the libretto is Domenico David. The drama had already been staged the previous year, in 1693, in the Teatro S. Giovanni Crisostomo at Venice with music by Carlo Francesco Pollaroli. On that occasion the libretto had been printed in Venice by Nicolini (12mo, with only an engraved frontispiece). After the dedication, dated Bologna, May 23, 1694, there are the argument, the cast, the scenario, and the notice to the reader, which reads: "Eccoti ricomparire in Teatro la Forza della virtù. The interpreters were: Domenico Cecchi (Fernando); Barbara Riccioni (Clotilde); Maria Maddalena Musi (Anagilda); Anna Signori (Elvira); Francesco Pistocchi (Rodrigo); Nicolo Paris (Alfonso); Giovanni Battista Franceschini (Sancio); and Pietro Antonio Fontana (Padiglio). The edition is enriched with twelve superb plates, illustrating the different stage scenes, by Carlo Antonio Buffagnotti (1660-after 1715). Buffagnotti, a printmaker and painter from Bologna, had learned perspective and quadratura under Domenico Santi. In the 1680s he had produced print suites of architecture designed by Santi or of his own invention. An accomplished cellist, Buffagnotti also produced print sets of instrumental music. In 1694 and 1695 he etched two suites of prints of Chiarini's scenography, one for the present drama and one for the Nerone fatto Cesare, another opera staged in Bologna in 1695.Marcantonio Chiarini (c. 1652-1730), an Italian painter born near Bologna, trained with Francesco Quaino and Domenico Santi.         Truth brought to light: or, the corrupt practices of some persons in court laid open. Whereby Their Majesties, and the Kingdom, have been prejudiced near one hundred and fifty thousand pounds this year; besides other evils that have and do attend it.

London printed in the year 1694 - 4to., title printed within double-ruled border, viii + 23 + (1)pp., contemporary mottled calf, rubbed, corners worn, neatly rebacked. A very good large copy. First edition. Wing C.7247. Kress S.1804. Goldsmiths 3026. Massie 1250. Of naval interest, with a proposal for an Act of Tunnage, whereby coastal vessels would be charged a fixed rate per ton to the Collector of each port, and all outward bound ships, except colliers, going either to Holland, Flanders, Portugal, Denmark, or Ireland, would pay twelve pence per ton. However, if any of the latter were taken by the enemy before their voyage were complete, they were to have this money paid back. Inward bound ships, either English or foreign, would pay two shillings per ton, unless they were not fully laden, in which case deductions would be made. The author thought that the abolition of the Receivers-General, who were allowed to take a portion of the taxes they collected, would be beneficial to the finances of the country, but he concluded that since he could get no one at Court to listen to him, there was a party of corrupt persons who controlled everything.         Al-Coranus s. lex islamitica Muhammedis, filii Abdallae pseudoprophetae [.].

Hamburg, Gottfried Schultze & Benjamin Schiller, 1694. - 4to. (88), 560, (10) pp. Latin title printed in red and black; Arabic (woodcut) and Latin half-titles. Preface in Latin, text in vocalized Arabic throughout. Contemp. vellum with faded ms. spine. The famous "Hamburg Koran": while not actually (as it was long considered) the first printed Qur'an ever, the first accessible printed edition of the Arabic text. Only in 1987 was a unique copy of Paganino de Paganinis's Venetian edition (c. 1538) rediscovered, a work whose press run either was destroyed immediately or was limited to the sole surviving specimen, apparently a proof copy (cf. A. Nuovo, "Il Corano arabo ritrovato", in: Bibliofilia LXXX, IX, 1987). Four years after the present edition, in 1698, Lodovico Marracci produced his own Qur'an, but its two big tomes were anything but easy to consult - hence, the Hamburg Koran remained "the only available and handleable" (Smitskamp) edition until the early 19th century. - Abraham Hinckelmann (1652-95), a Hamburg theologian, studied at Wittenberg and collected many Oriental manuscripts. He compiled a Quranic lexicon in manuscript and planned a Latin translation of the Koran, but this was never realised. - Some browning throughout; occasional pencil and ink notes in the text and extensive notes on flyleaves by previous owners. This is the more common variant with only one woodcut Arabic title. - Provenance: from the library of the German theologian Georg Detharding (1727-1813; cf. ADB V, 79) with his ownership to front flyleaf and lower pastedown; acquired in Berlin in 1813 by the Swedish oriental scholar Petrus Sjöbring (1776-1842) (his ownership on inside of upper cover).         The Anatomy of Humane Bodies Epitomized. Wherein All the Parts of Man's Body, with their Actions and Uses, are succinctly described...

London:: T. W. for Awnsham & John Churchill, 1694.. 8vo. Collation: A-Z8, Aa-Rr8, Ss4. Pagination: [16], vi, 626 pp. 18 FULL-PAGE ANATOMICAL ENGRAVED PLATES. Contemporary paneled calf; spine restored, title-label chipped, binding rubbed and scuffed with some surface leather loss, corners bumped, hinges reinforced along endpaper stubs, front hinge cracked nonetheless. Armorial bookplate of “William Wass” with name struck out and other signatures [William Crockley Sampson Clapham, [and] Charles [& E.?] Clapham, Guy's Hospital, 1866, and 1827) on front free endpapers, leather stains to borders of endpapers, ink stains on title page, edge wear, creases, foxing and browning; else in very good condition. Fourth edition, “Corrected and Inlarged both in the Discourse and Figures.” The all-encompassing content of this text is divided into six books, starting with sectioning the human body into three “cavities” I: (lower) the Abdomen, II: (middle) the Thorax, III: (highest), the head, including hair, brain, cerebellum, nerves, parts of the face, eyes, IV: of the veins, arteries, nerves and limbs, V: Concerning all the muscles of the body, VI: of the bones (including teeth). And finally, book VI: cartilage, ligament, and “of the nails”. The penis plate (facing p. 170) VIII shows three manuscript notes, showing that (probably Clapham) the owner of the book was studying the prostate gland and the anatomy of the urethra. The engraved plates are fine enhancements to the text. Good detail is shown for the cerebellum (plates XIV, XV), taking from Willis. Relating to the eye Gibson cites Briggs as a source. Clearly this anatomy is intended for everyday use by the student and practitioner as it is hand-held and relatively convenient for its size and handling of the human anatomy on a pocket-size scale. ¶ Thomas Gibson (1648/9-1722), physician. “Gibson was admitted a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians on 26 June 1676, and became an honorary fellow on 30 September 1680. He was a Presbyterian, and a visit which he and his second wife paid to his nephew John, provost of Queen's College, Oxford, is sourly described by Hearne. Gibson's religion and connections to the Cromwell family led to his being removed from the list of fellows of the College of Physicians when the college received a new charter under James II in 1687. After 1688 Gibson was reinstated and on 21 January 1719 he was appointed physician-general to the army. Gibson published The Anatomy of Humane Bodies Epitomized (1682; 6th edition, 1703), compiled for the most part from Alexander Read's work.” [ODNB] ¶ Provenance: William Crockley Sampson Clapham (fl. 1866-1922), worked at Guy's Hospital borough, London.

- First Edition? A similar edition was published on the same date by the same publisher, but in a slightly larger format, with a different snack, a flagship of different title and without title page red and black. This edition may be a counterfeit. A frontispiece representing Harlequin. Uncommon. Vellum half later. Smooth spine with respect to the red pen. Arlequiniana, which remains a literary curiosity, belongs to a prominent genre of French literature, born in the late seventeenth and flourishing in the first half of the eighteenth it comes to these collections of jokes or stories pleasant or Ana which can be entered with the birth in 1693 Menagiana This kind has the distinction of staging his own author and dialogue with the reader, it seems to have no other purpose than to entertain as it seeks to educate because in this age of censorship, literature created this seemingly light but satirical critique of society and manners mode. Charles Cotolondi wrote several books in this field, including Evremonmania. Harlequin, thanks to the famous theater of the Fair in Paris became very famous and was a kind, and it is deliberately Cotolondi actually a kind of wise fool, like a Scapin for Molière. The set is a series of conversations that combines stories and jokes. A table of strong caustic materials retrieves all subjects, death, Cardinal Mazarin, caution husbands or Mr. Lully. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale ?

Paris: Jean Anisson, 1694. Second edition, folio, pp. [112], 740, [12], 100, [2]; Caseneuve's Les Origines Francoise with separately printed title-p. and prelims; full contemporary calf, gilt spine; joints starting, top and bottom of spine chipped, internally clean, binding sound. First published in 1650 in 4to, and enlarged to folio in 1694. Menage (1613-1692), "a man of vast erudition and keen intuition," was one of the few in his day who had first hand knowledge of Old French and the early stages of other Romance languages (which he had gleaned from his studies of law and early legal documents) and was uniquely qualified to carry out such an etymological undertaking. But his sarcasm lead to his expulsion from the French Academy; he had many enemies and "suffered under the satire of Moliere and Boileau" (see Holmes, History of the French Language, 1938, p. 90; and Ency. Brit., 11th ed).
