        Ruffs in a Landscape

      - Christopher Huet (French, 1694-1759) Ruffs in a Landscape Oil on canvas Canvas size: 20 1/2” x 17 3/8” Literature: Christine E. Jackson, Bird Painting - The Eighteenth Century (Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1994), p. 76 Christopher Huet’s informal and intimate painting places male and female specimens of the species Philomachus pugnax in their natural habitat of marshy wetlands. The bird was first introduced to the English in 1586 when an anonymous writer published an attack upon the large frilly lace ruffs currently the fashion among Elizabethan men and woman. He scornfully likened these extravagant collars to the ruff worn around the neck of the male ruff bird when in breeding plummage. Huet’s charming painting was most probably designed to appeal to members of the French aristocracy among whom he found continued employment. He specialized in the depiction of natural history subjects as well the interior decoration of houses. His skills were such that his name can be found along side that of Watteau in the account books of the Prince de Conde documenting work completed at the family castle in 1741.

A Discourse Concerning Time, With Application of The Natural Day, and Lunar Month, and Solar Year, as Natural; And of such as are derived from them, As Artificial Parts of Time, for Measures in Civil and Common Use: For the better understanding of The Julian Year and Calendar. The First Column also in our Church-Calendar explained. With other Incidental Remarks.

London Printed by J. Heptinstall for L. Meredith. 1694 - FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 171 x 104 mms., pp. [viii], 120, contemporary panelled calf. A fine copy, with the calligraphic autograph, probably contemporary, "Henry Wigley" on the top margin of the front paste-down end-paper, and "Berd. Whalley" on the top margin of the title-page. Wigley is probably the Reverend Henry Wigley of Pensham House, Worcestershire. Wigley was the grandfather, through his daughter, of Ambrose St. John (1815 - 1875), the Roman Catholic priest and headmaster, who was born in Islington, and this perhaps suggests an Islingtonian provenance for this book. In yet another hand, probably contemporary or early 18th century, are two salutary bromides: "It is very Rare, yt [that] either ye joy, or ye Benefit of an Estate infamously gotten, continues long." And: "To sleep, to eat, to drink, at o ther Peoples Hours [?House], to walk thier Pace & to Love & Hate as they do, is ye vilest of Servitudes." Holder (1615/16 - 1698) is also the author of Principles of Harmony, also published in 1694. Robert Poole in his ODNB article on Holder notes, " Holder's subsequent Discourse Concerning Time (1694), written to explain the issue of calendar reform and reissued in 1701 after the renewed English rejection of the Gregorian calendar, was an elegant exposition of the concept of harmony on a cosmic scale. In it he developed the idea that rational human perception was required to give meaning to creation, for 'Time is always Transient, in a continual Flux, neither to be seen, nor felt, nor reserved; but only measured by an Act of the Mind.'" Wing H2385. Macclesfield 1044. Further editions were published in 1701 an 1712. [Attributes: First Edition]

In this edition, issued after his death in 1691, his son James added a portrait of his father and a dedication to Sir Christopher Wren. "For almost half a century Moxon's pocket Vignola had served as a practical manual for 'any that can but read and understand English'" (op. cit.)

DE RE POETICA: or, Remarks upon Poetry. With characters and Censures of the most considerable poets, whether ancient or modern extracted out of the best and choicest criticks.

Ric Everingham for R. Bently,, London: 1694 - 4to, pp. [xii], 129, blank, [2], 248. Bound in contemporary calf (some wear to the foredges), with later rebacking. Front blank loose, hinge tender, little foxing to the title-page, little soiling and small hole to the upper margin of B1, effecting a little of the running title, a very good copy. STC B3347; Jaggard p. 25; Wing B3347; not in CBEL. Blount (1649-1697) was a politician and author who acquired a high reputation for the extent and variety of his learning. He is most renowned for his Censura celebriorum Authorum, sive Tractatus in quo varia . (1690). This was a bibliographical dictionary, a kind of record of the opinions of the greatest writers of all ages on one another. The DNB, in writing about that book notes that of great interest is not just whom Blount quotes, but whom he left out. Those who were slighted included many of the great poets of the day. The present work somewhat makes up for the slight, in that Blount first treats poetry in general and the different kinds of poetry and the relationship between the poetry of different European countries and the languages of each. The second part contains critical notices of sixty-seven poets of various ages and countries. Some of those omitted from the Censura . are included here. This is one of the earliest critical notices of Shakespeare that had appeared in a book. [Attributes: First Edition]

An Account of Several Late Voyages and Discoveries to the South and North. Towards the Streights of Magellan, the South Seas, the vast tracts of land bewond Hollandia Nova, &c. Also, towards Nova Zembla, Greenland or Spitsberg, Groynland or Engroundland, &c

London: Samuel Smith and Benjamin Walford, 1694. Octavo, with one folding table, two folding maps and 19 engraved views; a very good copy in contemporary speckled calf, spine with raised bands and old paper spine label lettered by hand, short split to upper rear joint, some light repair and restoration to first map. One of very few contemporary printed records of Tasman's voyage. First edition and scarce: 'The editor of this work is believed to be Sir Tancred Robinson. In his lengthy Introduction, he speaks of explorations towards the South Terra Incognita, suggests that the Dutch had made great discoveries there which they had never divulged, and also speaks of Ferdinand Magellan, Pedro Fernándes de Quirós, Sir Francis Drake, and others who had sailed the South Seas' (Hill). The editor laments 'that the English nation have not sent with their Navigators, some skilful Painters, Naturalists, and Merchanists, under publick Stipends and Encouragement as the Dutch and French have done…'. Of Tasman's voyage he exclaims: '… 'tis the Discovery of a new World, not yet known to the English. 'Tis probable by Abel Jansen Tasman's Navigation, that New Guinea, New Carpentaria, and New Holland, are a vast prodigious Island, which he seems to have encompass'd in his Voyage…'. This is thus one of very few contemporary printed records of Tasman's voyage. It is 'of the greatest importance to an Australian collection, as it contains one of the earliest accounts of Abel Janszoon Tasman's famous voyage of 1642 from Batavia, in which he discovered Tasmania and New Zealand and visited Tonga and Fiji' (Hill). This short account is based upon that published in Amsterdam, 1674 by Dirk Rembrantse (Dirk Rembrantse van Nierop). Also of great significance is the account of Narborough's voyage in the {i Batchelour }through the Strait of Magellan and into the Pacific, which was widely read by later navigators including the survivors of the {i Wager }(part of Anson's fleet), who used this account for their own navigation through the passage. Other works contained in the book include the narrative of captains John Wood and William Flawes who, in the {i Speedwell} and {i Prosperous}, explored the Northeast Passage and visited Novaya Zemlya. They concluded the East could not be reached by this route. The narrative of Friedrich Martens' whaling voyage, here first translated into English, was the first book on a voyage to Spitsbergen and Greenland.

An Entire Body of Philosophy, According to the Principles Of the Famous Renate Des Cartes In Three Books: I. The Institution.II. The History of Nature.III. A Dissertation of the Want of Sense and Knowledge in Brute Animals.Written Originally in Lati

London: Printed by Samuel Roycroft. and Sold by the Undertaker Richard Blome, 1694., 1694. folio. pp. 15 p.l., 403, [3], 224, [2], 225-263. ruled in red throughout. 101 engraved plates & full-page engravings (incl. frontis.) by John Kip & M. Van der Gucht after G.Freman, &c. (1 folding, 7 with paste-over cancel captions). contemporary full morocco, paneled in gilt, gilt-tooled spine, all edges gilt (joints partly cracked, corners bumped, outer margin of frontis. bit ragged). armorial bookplate of Baron Blantyre. printed book label of Major J.R.Abbey. First Edition of the English Translation by Richard Blome of three works on Cartesian philosophy by Antoine Le Grand, a native of Douai, who was attached at an early age to the English community of St. Bonaventure's convent in that city. There he became a Franciscan Recollet friar, and taught philosophy and theology. A disciple of Descartes, he was the first to attempt to reduce Cartesian philosophy to the scholastic method. "The reception of Cartesianism into England is a complex story. Much of the initial reaction, for example by the Cambridge Platonists More and Cudworth, was quite favourable, emphasizing Descartes's dualism and his insistence on the reality of immaterial substance, and thus seeing his metaphysics as erecting a line of defence against Hobbes's materialism. After a while, however, the tide began to turn against Descartes, and various aspects of his philosophy came in for severe criticism. Le Grand became involved in defending Cartesianism on three different frontis against three very different types of objection." (Andrew Pyle in Dictionary of Seventeenth-Century British Philosophers) The work is handsomely printed and embellished with engravings by John Kip and Michael Van Der Gucht after drawings by G.Freman and others. Many of the plates have dedication captions by Richard Blome to Princess Anne of Denmark and various notable Englishmen and members of the British aristocracy, benefactors of the work whose names and coats of arms appear on four of the plates near the beginning. This copy would appear to have been intended for one of these patrons, being elegantly ruled in red throughout and attractively bound in full gilt-stamped morocco. Wing L950A.

ORIGO LEGUM: Or A Treatise on the Origin of Laws, and Their Obliging Power: as Also of Their Great Variety and Why Some Laws are Immutable, and Some not; but May Suffer Change, or Cease to be, or be Suspended, or Abrogated. In Seven Books.

Printed for Richard Chiswell,, London: 1694 - Per the DNB, Dawson "an English jurist, educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1658-9, M.A. in 1662, and was presented by his college to the vicarage of Sunninghill, Berkshire, where he died in 1700, aged 63." This his only known published work. Termed by some as 'ambitious, it have been described as "one of the most interesting, but now completely forgotten, treatises on natural law to be printed in late-seventeenth-century England. Despite its many qualities, the treatise was published, albeit very handsomely by Richard Chiswell, in a very limited edition. and it simply failed to reach the relevant audience", a circumstance which, no doubt, accounts for its scarcity in the modern antiquarian law market. Stain to text-block lower corner gradually diminishing, with minor worming, primarily in the stained portion, affecting margins only. Lower outer margins of first few leaves neatly restored. Some other odd soiling, nothing obtrusive. A solid VG copy of an uncommon title. Early full brown calf, with a modern respining to style. Dark maroon gilt-lettered leather title label to spine second compartment. Folio. ^4 a - b^4 c^2 A - X^4; 2^A - 2D^4 2E^2. 32.5 cm x 20.5 cm. 1st edition (Lowndes, p. 604; Marvin, p. 257; Wing D-459). [28], 168, T.p. printed in red & black. Printed glosses. "Chap.         America Septentrionalis

Valk and Schenk, Amsterdam 1694 - Rare issue of Hondius' important map of North America, here with full period hand colouring. "Henricus Hondius' beautifully engraved map of North America had greater influence than any other to date in perpetuating the theory of California as an island . Cartographically, this map is a careful composition of many different sources and illustrates well the current state of knowledge" (Burden). Henricus Hondius was the son of the engraver and mapmaker Jodocus Hondius. Henricus continued the family's cartographical business in partnership with Jan Jansson, his brother-in-law. Mapmaking was more often than not a family enterprise in Amsterdam and in Paris in the 17th century. The firm was active under one family member or another for nearly the entire 17th century. This was the period of Dutch supremacy at sea, when, having supplanted the Portuguese in India, central Africa and northeastern Brazil, the Dutch were the prime carriers of spices, silks, furs, tobacco, sugar and slaves. It was not in the nature of things that this predominance could last very long, if only because the Netherlands is a very small country. But until the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 1660s and 70s, the Dutch were supreme, and the making of maps was a form of nationalistic journalism. First issued in 1636, the map appeared unchanged in various editions of the Hondius/Jansson atlas throughout much of the century. In 1694, "Petrus Schenk acquired all of the Atlas Major plates at public auction . and began issuing the map with his own imprint. This last state is uncommon" (Burden). Beyond the change in imprint, this last issue is notable for the addition of hachured lines dividing the claims of France, Spain and England and with the hand-colouring reflecting those boundaries, which were quite changed from the preceding issues.       Manuel Ruiz de Murga,, Madrid: 1694 - 12 hojas, 276 páginas, 4 hojas. Encuadernación original en pergamino con el título rotulado en el lomocon algún mínimo defecto. Alguna manchita muy ocasional. Buen ejemplar. Palau 224284. Simón Díaz VII, 7366. Fernández de Navarrete II, 540-1; I, 505). Backer-Sommervogel VI, 631. THE MALADIES OF THE ARMY OF KING LOUIS XIV FROM THE SOON TO BE FAMOUS HERO OF THE SIEGE OF ENTREVAUX

ENTREVAUX FRANCE 1694 - On offer is a superb manuscript letter dated 29th of September Entrevaux handwritten by the noted Captain de la Contardiere interesting letter on a variety of military subjects: the King's ordnances being stolen, a Council of War, a large number of maladies besetting the King's army, issues with a particular Lieutenant Colonel in the Regiment etc. De la Contardiere is famous for his defense of Entrevaux in 1704. The historical background is fascinating: King Louis XIV of France having accepted the throne of Spain for his grandson, Philippe of Anjou, found himself in war against Austria, England, Holland and the Duchy of Savoy. These events are known as "The War of the Spanish Succession: 1701 to 1713". The army of the Duke of Savoy, Victor-Amedee was mobilized to invade Provence. The garrisons of the forts of Entraunes and Rabbets, in its possession, were reinforced. The English fleet under Admiral Rook blocked Antibes, preventing with the French reinforcements of the Le chevalier de Damas from returning to Entrevaux with artillery. Le chevalier de Blaignac with 1,500 Savoyard troops and two fauconneaux [small field guns] went up the valley of Estéron and placed his seige at Entrevaux, which was defended by a valorous soldier, the Captain de la Contardiere, a friend of Vauban [the great expert on fortifications]. The new fortifications, which were not completely finished, were to stand the test of fire on June 7, 1704. The artillery of the fortress was not yet in place. The bourgeois garrison and militia had ten arquebuses with hooks, in addition to the individual armament. The enemy army occupied the plateauxs of Pigière and Closes dominating Entrevaux. They did not have siege cannons, as they were too heavy to be transferred onto the bad mountain lanes. On June 14, after one week of siege, to relieve the pressure, de la Contardiere decided to carry out a night attack, which was a total success. A breach was opened in the palisade surrounding the Savoyard camp. The impetuous attack of the Entrevalais causes a rout of the enemies, who, although superior of number, flew towards Seds. 8.5" x 7", overall VG. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Por Francisco Antonio de Burgos 1694 - - Por Francisco Antonio de Burgos, En Valencia 1694, Pet. in 8 (10,5x16,3cm)), (32) 317pp. (3), relié. - Nouvelle édition après l'édition originale de 1665. Rare. (32) 317pp. (3) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

COMPENDIO DELLA FORTIFICATIONE. Al Ser mo Principe Silvestro Valier et All’Augusto Senato Veneto scritto per comando dell’Illmo & Ecc. mo Sig.r Sebastiano Mocenigo Cap. delle Galeazze.

Venice Girolamo Albrizzi 1694 - First Edition. Very fine pictorially engraved title-page to the first part (Defensive), Very finely engraved pictorial title-page to the second part (Offensive) and many very finely engraved full page plates by Albrizzi. Folio (mm. 384 x 265), bound in handsome half-vellum over marbled boards, the spine with title to lettering label, with plates on finely made paper. (8), 33; (1 blank), 1 table, 2 tables engraved in copper. A very fine, very fresh, crisp and clean copy, the plates and text in excellent condition. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT ILLUSTRATED TREATISE ON FORTIFICATIONS. Alberghetti followed in the footsteps of his father. As a young engineer and eventually superintendent, he served the Republic in Dalmatia, the Morea and in other places on the European mainland. He served in the Senate several times. He became general of artillery and ballistics and a master of science. He probably was instrumental in 1691 in introducing the use of mortars and bombs. In a handwritten letter from Venice, March 1, 1692, he sent the Doge important information on the Peloponnese, and presented posthumously the writings of his brother Horace concerning the fortification of the Isthmus, with annotations and commentary (both works are now among the MSS. Cicogna 3248, formerly 2216, nos. VI VII, at the Correr Museum in Venice). His own work on the subject is considered an invaluable compendium of the fortification. It was published in Venice in 1694, with a beautiful frontispiece and engraved plates, by Jerome Albrizzi. Quite interestingly, the work was divided into two parts, one for defensive military architecture, the other for the offensive, it is a targeted examination of the fortifications of other countries and is primarily intended to ensure the preservation of the latest achievements of the Venetian state overseas . As the superintendent of artillery he made significant presentations in writing, and his work published in Venice in 1718 provided an interesting treatise on military education and science of the weapon. Even after his appointment as superintendent (1699), Alberghetti did not cease the activity of directing the smelter and Arsenal. He was responsible for the two half cannon (1700) that are preserved in the National Museum of Artillery, with his name and other unusual iron cannons from the year 1718. He was still in the home foundry at least until 1722. He was appointed general of the artillery March 15, 1742, and held the office for twelve years, including the dangerous period of 1754 and the fortifications at Corfu. He returned to Venice where he died in 1755. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Lisbon, Officina de Miguel Manescal, Impressor do Principe Nosso Senhor, 1694. - Typographical headpieces. Woodcut initials. Woodcut tailpieces. (18 ll.), 224 pp. The two leaves of the index, bound here before the main text, are sometimes found bound at the end of the volume. 4°, contemporary limp vellum (rather worn, upper half of spine defective), remains of ties. Some waterstaining. Honest, complete, and unsophisticated, in very good condition. Occasional contemporary ink manuscript annotations in margins as well as on the front free endleaf verso and rear free endleaf recto. ---- FIRST EDITION of the FIRST SCIENTIFIC BOOK TO DESCRIBE YELLOW FEVER, BY THE FIRST EUROPEAN PHYSICIAN TO TREAT THE DISEASE, WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRST AUTOPSY OF A YELLOW FEVER VICTIM. The author received his medical training at Coimbra, and practiced for many years in Recife. There was speculation that he may have been a native of that Brazilian city, where he had the opportunity to see the first epidemics of the malady, then referred to as "o mal da bicha". If Ferreira da Rosa was truly born in Brazil, this would be the first scientific book by a Brazilian author. The book is arranged as a series of questions: What are the signs of this disease? Is it better to bleed the patient from the arm or the foot? Should one apply blisters? How should the parotid glands look? An early owner of our copy made marginal notations of certain recipes and added occasional cross-references. A substantial early note on the front flyleaf cites an article in the @Gazeta of 1716 that mentioned Vigier's @Thesouro Apollineo, calling it a very useful book and noting where it can be purchased.Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 747-8: "The book is not only of the greatest rarity but also of great scientific importance.? Ferreira da Rosa submits here the first known accurate and clear observation on yellow fever . This is obviously a precious book not only concerning the history of Brazilian medicine, so destitute in medical books of the colonial period, but also for the history of medicine in general. ? Very few copies are recorded of this extremely rare book."In the first edition of his @Bibliographia Brasiliana, Borba de Moraes says he was able to locate only three copies, in the Biblioteca Nacional of Portugal, the Biblioteca Nacional of Brazil, and the Oliveira Lima Library of the Catholic University of America, in Washington. According to Porbase, there are three copies in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal; the entry in Porbase cites only 16 preliminary leaves. Upon inspecting the three copies, we found that one was badly wormed (affecting the text) and missing the two leaves of the index. The other two copies are complete and in reasonable condition. The copy at the Biblioteca Nacional of Brazil is reportedly in poor condition. The Oliveira Lima Library copy is missing two preliminary leaves. There are also copies in the British Library, the National Library of Medicine, the New York Academy of Medicine, the library of the Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa, and that of the Escola Medico-Cirurgica do Porto (apparently incomplete). The John Carter Brown Library recently acquired a rather shabby, unappealing copy missing two preliminary leaves. The only complete copy besides the present one we have seen on the market since 1969, when we began to track such things, was sold in Paris, 24 June 1976 in the so-called "Ferreira das Neves" sale (albeit washed and rebound); it is now in the Bosch collection. We have also seen two incomplete copies in commerce, the one now in JCB that lacks two leaves, and another, in much better condition overall but missing one preliminary leaf, that was sold by us to a Spanish collector in 1974.---- Garrison, @History of Medicine, fourth edition, p. 272. Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 747-8 (citing only 14 preliminary leaves, with the two index leaves following the text); see also Borba de Moraes (1958) II, 216-7. Innocêncio III, 372-3 (without collation; obviously cited without ever having seen the book); X, 252 (correcting the [Attributes: First Edition]

The Most Delectable History of Reynard the Fox. Newly corrected and purged, from all grossness in phrase and matter. Augmented and enlarged with sundry excellent moral and expositions upon every several chapter. To which may now be added a Second Part of the said History: As also the Shifts of Reynardine the son of Reynard the Fox, together with his life and death.

London: printed by Thomas James for Edward Brewster, 1694 - Quarto (191 × 141 mm.), in 3 parts. Nineteenth-century brown morocco gilt by C. Smith, all edges gilt. Occasional light browning and a few trivial spots, neat marginal repairs to 3 leaves of the third part, early manuscript notes to old fly-leaf, a very good copy. Numerous woodcut illustrations, some repeated several times, most with the initials "E.B.", predominantly printed in black letter, with some roman apparatus. Bookplates of Charles W. G. Howard and Lawrence Strangman, clippings from booksellers' catalogues tipped to front free endpaper. A very scarce English edition of the Reynard fables, the first part of which is sometimes attributed to John Shirley (1680–1702). The Reynard tales were first printed in England by Caxton in 1481 and continued to enjoy enormous popularity in the following centuries. As the 17th century progressed they appeared in increasingly moralized form, though the woodcuts in the present edition retain a pleasingly blunt character, recalling the illustrations of the early woodcut and manuscript era. The Reynard fables were also looked to as sources of political allegory, and the present copy bears an interesting early manuscript discourse, drawn from the Dedication of Thomas Parsons's Leycester's Commonwealth (1641), describing the History of Reynard the Fox as 'an old English Book which now passes through the hands of old women and children only' and suggesting it to be 'an Enigmatical History of the Earl of Leicester and his family.' Though many editions were printed of the Reynard tales, relatively few survive perfect outside institutional collections. The present edition of three parts, treated as a single entry in Wing, is scarce in commerce. Wing S3513. [Attributes: First Edition]
