Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI
Venezia, 1693. Tavola contenente nove raffigurazioni. Incisione in rame, bella coloritura coeva, in ottimo … [Click Below for Full Description]

QUINTILIAN, Marcus Fabius
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. One of the earliest books on teaching public speaking! Marcus Fabius Quintilianus, or Quintilian, was a 1st-century Roman scholar most remembered for his theoretical textbook, 'Institutio Oratoria'. This work deals with the foundations and development of teaching orations and public speaking. Quintilian's most important point was that speeches provided the message of the speaker being a 'good man' and that there is a direct correlation between the quality of a speech and the quality of a man's character. This book was known to have significant influence on Martial, Seneca, Juvenal, and Saint Augustine, who all credited Quintilian with focusing their orations. This first edition, published in 1693, was the first to be edited with notes and supplemented by Edmund Gibson. [Attributes: First Edition]

BLOUNT, Sir Thomas Pope
Printed for R. Bentley, London, 1693. [16], 469, [3]. With three pages of terminal advertisements. Contemporary speckled calf, spine richly gilt, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Slightly rubbed, a little bumped to edges, small splits to joints at head and foot, else a crisp and fresh copy. With the bookplate of William Trumbull, Esq, to FEP. Sir Thomas Pope Blount (1649-97), politician and writer. A Natural History collects contemporary thinking on a plethora of natural topics: including volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tea, coffee, opium, tobacco (with a separate section on 'Planting and Ordering'), gold, silver, diamonds and bees. With repeated reference to the Philosophical Transactions, the information is gleaned from authors such as Acosta, Borelli, Boyle, Gilbert, Halley, Heylin, Hooke and Willis. Somewhat incongruously, the publisher's advertisements placed at the end of this largely scientific volume are entirely literary. 'A Catalogue of some Plays Printed for R. Bentley' commences with the Beaumont/Fletcher second folio and Shakespeare's fourth folio amongst other large formate works, and is followed by a list of 62 separate plays, including four further titles by the latter: 'Hamlet, Pr of Denmark, a Tragedy', 'Julius Caesar', 'King Lear' and the 'Moor of Venice'. Chronographus, Philo
Augsburg, Jakob Koppmayer for Jakob Enderlin, 1693. Folio (305 x 190 mm). 2 parts in 1 volume. (4), 31, (1), 64 pp. With 12 (instead of 16) plates containing 24 copper engravings. Modern boards. Fascinating, little-received chronographical study focusing on the history of the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, then under Ottoman rule. The anonymous late 17th-century German author hides behind the name of "Philo Chronographus" and is evidently identical with the "Philo Cosmographus" who produced the similarly themed geographical work, "Trinum Marinum", which is announced on the title page and was often issued together with this, though produced by a different publisher and catalogued separately. The first part of the work contains a general introduction which relates the 24 hours of the day to the time from Creation to the year 1800 (which is conceived of as the end of the world, leaving another mere 107 years of history to come!). The second part features a chronicle of the "Rule of the Ottoman Porte", from Sultan Osman to Suleyman II. - Numerous pages of plates (each page containing two copper engravings) depict costumes, animals and plants, maps and views of towns (Sultan Osman, the Ottoman Residence and a view of Constantinople, dolphins and cranes, Turkish ladies in their various garments, a cypress and a mastix tree, etc.). - The number of plates, and indeed even the arrangement of engravings on a single page, varies from copy to copy, but this wants 4 plates as compared to the table of plates. Well-preserved. - VD 17, 12:645730N. Weller, Pseud. 439.

LETI, Gregorio
In 1693, Gregorio Leti produced a biographical account of Elizabeth I, Queen of England. While many books were written on the life of the last Tudor monarch, Leti was the first! Leti's "Life of Elizabeth Queen of England" was the first of its kind and featured many aspects of her childhood, her romantic endeavors, as well as an account of her mother Anne Boleyn. Even though Leti was called 'inexact' by the Catholic Encyclopedia and 'inaccurate' by the Lutheran church, his historical importance and relevance is well-known and unprecedented. (Mosheim, 194). This rare first edition is illustrated throughout with 60 engraved plates consisting of portraits of important English figures including Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Mary I, Thomas Cranmer, and more! According to Vinciana, this book was written while Leti was traveling in England and was, unfortunately, not well-received in Holland or England and was especially disapproved of by the Catholic Church. "That Buel was highly regarded by his contemporaries is suggested by the frequency with which he was represented in anthologies. Krautwurst saw him as the most important Nuremberg musician between Hassler and Johann Staden, and his music, which is little known, will no doubt repay further study." Miroslaw Perz in Grove Music Online. Fennitzer was active as an engraver and mezzotintist in Nürnberg in the second half of the 17th century. Velden, M. Van
Lovani [Leuven, Louvain], AE. Denique, 1693. Broadsheet (50.0 x 34.0 cm). Folded in six, and preserved in 18th-century marbled boards.= This large pamphlet contains a treatise on Descartian philosophy by Martin van Velden, from The Hague, professor at the University of Leuven, or Louvain - the oldest and largest university in the Low Countries. It was (to be) defended at the Scholis Artium on the 27th of July, 1693. Just two years earlier, van Velden had been punished for openly defending Cartesian philosophy, which only very gradually replaced the prevailing Aristotelian philosophy at the university and in Roman Catholic countries in general. In 1681 Maarten Etienne van (de) Velden (1664-1724) enrolled at the Faucon college in Leuven, and in 1683 in the faculty of arts. From 1688, his name appeared on promotional lists as the primary philosophy teacher of that college. Subsequently, he became a professor of mathematics, a chair once occupied by the Cartesian van Gutschoven; there, he showed himself to be a 'famosus in experimentis' follower of the newer [Cartesian] ideas and in 1690 he visited the famous Dutch scientist and mathematician Christiaan Huygens. On January 15, 1691 van Velden wanted his students to defend two propositions, including an 'indubitatum est systema Copernici' etc.’ Despite mediation by [Cardinal] Giulio Piazza in Brussels, this caused major difficulties with the faculty. Although obliged to submit, he wrote a three-fold series of statements about logic, physics and metaphysics, in which he added a corollary, confirming the Copernicus system once mor … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOGHE, Romeyn de.
Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1693. Coloured. Two sheets conjoined, total 600 x 950mm. Some restoration, laid on archival paper. A superb chart of south-east England showing the Thames to London, and the sea coast round to Portland with the Isle of Wight and Aldernay, an inset detail of the Strait of Dover and prospects of Portsmouth and Rochester & Chatham. The chart appeared in one part of Mortier's 'Neptune François', titled 'Cartes Marines a l'Usage des Armées du Roy de la Grande Bretagne'. The nine charts of this section, all engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe, one of the foremost artist/etchers of the period, was described by Koeman as the 'most spectacular type of maritime cartography ever produced in 17th century Amsterdam'. Mortier's motives in the production of this atlas was to flatter the Dutch king on the British throne since the Glorious Revolution of 1688, William III, to whom it is dedicated. The unprecedented size of the atlas and the use of artists such as de Hooghe were not cheap: Again Koeman calls it the 'most expensive sea atlas' of the period, 'intended more as a show-piece than something to be used by the pilots as sea'. KOEMAN: vol 4. p. 423-4, M.Mor 5.

SAINT Lo, George
W. Miller, London, 1693. 48pp. plus engraved titlepage. Modern three-quarter mottled calf and marbled boards, maroon gilt morocco label. Minor chipping at head of spine. Bookplate on front pastedown and front free endpaper. Extra titlepage trimmed close at bottom, slight loss in last line. Internally clean. Very good. Regarding the confiscation of foreign cargo, St. Lo proposes that fully one third of the value of the prize be given to the captain and the crew. When it comes time to auction the actual goods, he recommends the bounty be broken into small lots, to allow for the greatest price per lot, thus increasing revenue. In short, St. Lo advocates a pro-reward philosophy of human resource management, at a time when stick was more popular than carrot. … [Click Below for Full Description]
